THE MAYOR’S MESSAGE Lauren Sheprow La en Sheprow THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE INCORPORATED VILLAGE OF PORT JEFFERSON THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE INCORPORATED VILLAGE OF PORT JEFFERSON JULY 2023, EDITION 43 JULY 2023, EDITION 43 The MAYOR

HAPPY JULY PORT JEFFERSON!

It was an absolute joy to see so many of you waving flags and celebrating this community and country at the Village's Fourth of July Parade- despite the weather! It is an honor to serve this incredible community as the Village's Deputy Mayor, continuing to invigorate all that makes Port Jefferson Village the place we love to call home. In addition to enjoying Port Jeff's summer bestshopping at the farmers market, swimming at our local beaches, concerts on the harbor, ice cream at sunset- I've been hard at work to introduce new concepts, dialogue with residents, and keep long-term projects on track.

I am gladly assisting grant writers with documentation to support an application for NYS Parks EPF funds. The Six Acre Park Commi ee is organizing the documents created and referred to during their planning process. Additionally, we have called upon dozens of our brilliant community partners for le ers of support for this parkland project. We hope to report good news regarding the application later this year.

Conversations continue regarding the feasibility of storm water capture and/or effluent reuse for the greens at the Port Jefferson Country Club. These large infrastructure projects tie in entities from all levels of governmentvillage to federal- as well as many agencies and nonprofit organizations. Port Jefferson Village is proud to be on the forefront of these discussions, seeking a fiscally and environmentally responsible solution to best serve our community and serve as a model for others to follow.

At the request of the Conservation Advisory Council, as well as other residents and local community groups, I have introduced a discussion regarding the regulation of gas powered leaf blowers to the Board of Trustees. Over the coming months, the CAC will lead public education, resident surveying, and precedent seeking efforts with the goal of proposing a balanced code dra for consideration.

In the coming weeks, the administration aims to roll out an online form for residents interested in volunteering for Village Boards, Commi ees, and/or Village events. This form will complement the introduction of several new Boards and Commi ees open to residents for participation. Whether you've been a resident for 48 hours or 48 years, the Village welcomes your contribution of expertise, time, and passion.

As always, reach out any time with thoughts or questions!

THANK YOU PORT JEFFERSON!

Thank you for the trust you have placed in me by electing me Trustee to the Village we all love! I am humbled by your support and encouragement. Your vote demonstrates that you trust me to be your voice, and I cannot thank you enough for that trust. I would be remiss if I didn't thank Trustee Snaden for her hard work and dedication to Port Jefferson, she will be missed! I look forward to working with Mayor Sheprow the Board of Trustees and with all the residents of our village for a be er Port Jefferson. I am but a cog in a wheel, I will not be able to accomplish anything alone, but if we all work together, I know we will be able to accomplish greatness!

Since I was installed on July 4th , I have hit the ground running on some various projects. I was appointed Liaison to the Department of Public Works, Parks, Port Jefferson Harbor Education & Arts Conservancy (aka The Conservancy) and the newly established Liaison to Tax and Assessment Departments.

I have given our new Village A orney a proposed Code Change that will hold the Village harmless of for any loss of Village property tax revenue in the event an applicant obtains tax relief from the IDA or any other agency that has tax relief authority.

In late Winter the previous administration passed a code change allowing traffic to make a le turn on to Perry Street when approaching from the north, unfortunately a sign prohibiting that turn was not removed. DPW has removed that sign and pole.

As I promised, I will be establishing time to informally meet with residents to discuss concerns or difficulties that may be having with the Village. These “Saturday Sit-Downs with Bob” will take place every month at the Village Center Living Room on the Second Floor from 9:30 to 11:00. The first one is scheduled for September 9. Please feel free to visit and discuss any item you may

have. I may not have an answer for you, but I promise to get back to you as soon as I can.

I have reached out to establish a “Village Volunteer Portal” on the Village Website that will enable residents the ability to see what volunteer options are available; sign up to volunteer for a specific commi ee and/or post their qualifications for future opportunities.

When I was walking in different neighborhoods the residents of Laurita Gates complained about the sight issue when exiting on to North Country Road. DPW has removed some of the sight obstacles and will keep an “eye” on it to correct any issues in the future.

The conservancy had a very successful Port Paws Dog Festival July 15 & 16. Unfortunately, the 16th was rained out. But July 15 was very successful – we had over 120 dogs participate and had a record turnout of people passing through the gate.

UPCOMING EVENTS TO KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR:

PORT PALOOZA – JULY 29

VILLAGE GOLF OUTING – AUGUST 17

MUSTANG SHOW – SEPTEMBER 17

PORT JEFFERSON HILL CLIMB – SEPTEMBER 23

Make sure to check out the Village Website, for the Summer Concert Schedule, Art Exhibits and Summer Farmers Market at the Village Center.

I look forward to seeing everyone enjoying the beautiful summer weather walking, shopping and dining in our lovely and charming Village.

PORT PAWS A SUCCESS DESPITE THE RAIN CANCELING 2 ND DAY!

Despite the 2nd day of the 2nd annual Port Paws Dog Festival being completely cancelled -The Friday night "TRY IT" period and Saturday's record a endance put a bright spot on this dog loving event presented by key sponsor, KING O"ROURKE AUTO GROUP of Smithtown.

Highlights included 160 plus registered canine competitors from over 10 North East states, a 30,000 gallon pool was the centerpiece to a wonderful array of vendors offering everything from dog bandannas to dog grooming and even some rescue organizations.

The Port Jefferson Harbor Education and Arts Conservancy was once again directly benefited from the net proceeds of the event. Last year the conservancy was abe to install a $8,000 water fountain right at the location of the festival.

New to the festival were both the Suffolk County Sheriff and the SCPD canine units. The Sheriff was providing free dog ID's and officer Krause of the SCPD was demonstrating real time training on the green slopes of Joe Erland field.

Sunday brought the rain - so much so that the entire day had to be cancelled. "We had to keep the safety of vendors and visitors top of mind, while it was sad to not duplicate the wonderful day we had Saturday - it was the right decision", said Kevin Wood - the event's founder and chair.

The Mayor, Lauren Sheprow would like to thank all those that participated and especially recognize the help of the volunteers, our parks, code and DPW departments who help to make this event a success.
