WELCOME TO OUR NEW FORMAT!

Starting August 2023 the communications department at the Village of Port Jefferson is proud to present a new easier (and fun) to read more 'magazine like' format for the eReport. Many people told us they never even realized that content existed below the first page of the old constant contact format. The village has followed the lead of many national newspapers and magazines in adopting this easy to read format and we hope you like it. We would like to credit the talent of our graphic artist for much of the design incorporated in the newly forma ed eReport. If you like the way it looks and feels - let us know! Send an email to: editor@portjeff.com We will be placing downloadable archives for you to reference as well at h ps://portjeff.com/theportereport/

BUILDING Updates

DEVELOPING & MAINTAINING OUR VILLAGE

Building Department almost LIVE with new software

Municity 5 so ware will bring the Building & Planning Department process into a more modern environment and increase efficiency with advanced GIS capabilities and a map interface.

Building department to start employing Laserfiche

Laserfiche is the electronic virtual file cabinet for all of the historical documents previously stored in the Building Department that have been scanned off site and uploaded into a shared platform through Brookhaven Town.

Building department taking action on vacant properties

Our Village Investigator is actively patrolling our residential and commercial districts to identify vacant lots and buildings in need of property maintenance, advising absentee owners of their obligations under the Village Code to keep their properties clean and in good repair. This practice benefits all neighbors and owners by preventing garbage accumulation, overgrowth, invasion by wild animals and insects, squa ers, and thereby maintaining everyone’s property values. If you see a property in need of some TLC, give us a call at 631-473-4744, and we will make sure it is addressed. All calls will be kept anonymous.

BRIDGEPORT & PORT JEFFERSON FERRY COMPANY

To start construction of new offices near Village hall

The Bridgeport & Port Jefferson Ferry has successfully navigated the Village Planning Department process and is ready to start building their new office facility just opposite the Village Hall on West Barnum. Fred Hall, the Vice President and General Manager of the ferry company, confirms that the project is set to kick off the week of August 14th, with an expected construction timeline of 12 to 18 months. This expansion underlines the company's ongoing growth and unwavering dedication to the local community.

DPWUpdates

The Department of Public Work Superintendent, Steve Gallagher

The DPW has been busy maintaining our extensive roadways. Here is a small example of the projects that have been completed or are actively being worked on. Woodside Ave Road Repair - The roadway at the curb was repaired on Woodside Ave due to curbline erosion. DPW sawcut and milled the damaged asphalt, strip patched, and sealed the road.

We met with Bridgeport - Port Jefferson Ferry Co. to discuss safety options regarding East Broadway traffic. We provided traffic safety support for the recycling event on August 5th.

NEW LIGHT INSTALLED AT MATHER

Statement from Mather Hospital about the new stoplight on North Country Road:

In 2022, the Village Planning Board required that Mather Hospital install sidewalks, make roadway improvements (ie turning lanes) and add a traffic light at its North Country Road entrance to improve the traffic flow. This was required by the Village in order for Mather to receive approval of our new Emergency Department building plan. Construction on the light started in June 2023. We are awaiting the arrival of a controller that will work in conjunction with the light at North Country Road and Belle Terre Road. Once we have this equipment and it is installed, there will be a period where the light will blink for several days. A er which the light will be put into full operation. The earliest this will happen is mid-August. We will keep the Village informed of our progress.

VILLAGE CODE

From Code Department Chief, Andy Owen:

TRAFFIC:

The traffic survey of Brook Rd is complete. The data from the speed trailer showed us that 192 vehicles traveled on Brook Road between July 24th to August 7th. Our next traffic survey will be on Scraggy Hill Rd. This survey will also be for a two-week period.

Bike patrols and foot patrols have commenced in the downtown area with positive feedback from both the public and our officers.

Recent village events, Port Paws and Port Palooza, were successful, with no major incidents to report.

PARKING IN TOWNUpdates

CVS Parking Lot

We are in the heart of the summer, and the parking scene in Port Jeff is alive as ever. In addition to our residents parking in our lots, we see visitors parking at a rate of well over 1,000 cars daily. The addition of the spaces at the CVS lot for public use has helped immensely with businesses and events taking place in the south part of the C1 district.

PassPort

The parking department manages our micro-mobility service,"PASSPort." I presented information on the program at the 8-7-23 board of trustees meetingciting excellent service results but lower than anticipated usage. The program will be re-considered for continuance a er August 2023.

Approximately 80.5% of our paid-parking session transactions are paid by QR code. One advantage is that the PAY BY CELL option remembers your plate number for the next time you park and reminds you of your parking session expiring. The Barnum parking lot continues to be a free alternative and is heavily utilized by C1 district employees. Parking questions and comments are welcome at portjeff.com/parking

PORT PAWS A SUCCESS

Despite the rain canceling 2nd day!

The 2023 Port Paws Dog Festival event took place from July 14th through 16th, and both Friday and Saturday were exceptional days. Unfortunately, Sunday's events were canceled due to the dangerous rainfall. In prioritizing the safety of everyone involved, the Village made the tough call to halt the event.

More than 70 canines took part in Friday evening's 'TRY IT' segment. Saturday's event drew a crowd of over 800 a endees and had nearly 30 exhibitors, including SCPD and Suffolk County Sheriff canine units.

We are thankful to our presenting sponsor, King O'Rourke, as well as our volunteers, parks, DPW, and code departments.

The event once again will benefit to the Port Jefferson Harbor Education and Arts Conservancy 501 (c)3.

PORT PALOOZA

A Hot day in so many ways!

The live mini music festival took place July 29th, noon to dusk - on two stages with a total of 10 LIVE musical acts ranging from middle schoolers playing live for the first time - to Port Jeff's own Cole Fortier Band - to a new addition to the lineup South Bay Soul (Pictured). The day was filled with relaxation and musical bliss accented with Kilwin's ice cream in the park!

The new stage added this year at the Eagle statue (25a and main) featured four talented musical acts, including "Allie Sandt" (Pictured), which received rave reviews. The band features a Port Jeff resident on bass, and many members are music industry majors at the State University of Oneonta.

The weather held out perfectly until around 7:53 pm when the Keenan Zach Sunset Jazz Trio was cut slightly short by the event chair, Kevin Wood, who helped safely get everyone out of the area.

We thank all the sponsors listed at www.portpalooza.com as well as the support of the Port Jefferson Harbor Education

WE NEED SAILORS!

Port Jefferson, NY – The 14th annual Village Cup Rega a, a friendly competition between Mather Hospital and the Village of Port Jefferson, will sail on Saturday, September 9, 2023.

Presented by the Port Jefferson Yacht Club, the Rega a raises funds for Mather’s Palliative Medicine Program and the Lustgarten Foundation, which funds pancreatic cancer research. Last year’s Rega a raised more than $109,000 – a record sum - which was divided between Mather Hospital and the Lustgarten Foundation. The event has raised almost $860,000 over the past 13 years.

The Rega a consists of Yacht Club-skippered sailboats divided into two teams representing Mather Hospital and the Village of Port Jefferson. Employees from the Hospital and Village help crew the boats, which race in one of three classes based on boat size. The festivities begin in Harborfront Park in Port Jefferson Village at 10 am, where you can purchase shirts, , commemorative hats, nautical bags and mugs. The Memorial Parade of Boats begins at 11 am at the Port Jefferson Village dock. All sailboats participating in the Rega a will pass by the park dressed in banners and nautical flags on their way out to the racecourse on Long Island Sound.

Following the Rega a, a celebratory Skipper’s Reception and presentation of the Village Cup will take place in a restored 1917 shipyard building that today serves as the Port Jefferson Village Center.

To sign up as a crew member for the Port Jefferson Village team, contact Sylvia at 631-473-4724 Ext. 219 or email clerk@portjeff.com.

Businesses, organizations and individuals can support the Rega a and the programs it funds by making a donation or purchasing tickets to a end the Skipper’s Reception or view the Rega a on a spectator boat. For more information and to purchase tickets please visit h p://portjeffersonyachtclub.com/community/village-cup/ or www.facebook.com/villagecuprega a. Sponsorships also are available.

The Yacht Club initiated the Rega a primarily to call a ention to and to support efforts to combat pancreatic cancer, which had claimed the lives of two of its members. The event also promotes a closer relationship between the Club and the Village in the wonderful maritime se ing we share.
