ACKNOWLEDGING OUR HISTORY
We acknowledge that the city of Chico is located on the traditional lands of its first people, the Mechoopda, who originally settled here. We celebrate their spiritual relationship to the land and the lasting benefits of that relationship. The wildlife, agriculture, water, and mountains we are lucky enough to enjoy today are the direct legacy of the Mechoopda people and their stewardship.
We are humbled and grateful to share in the natural bounty of these sacred lands, places that have long given shelter, sustenance, and power to the Mechoopda people. These lands are their home, now and always.

FIND YOURSELF IN CHICO
You’re Welcome Here
Chico is the perfect place to unplug, relax, and explore.
There’s something beautiful and at times indefinable about Chico that’s nonetheless known by everyone who calls it home. You can find it as readily in a drive down the Esplanade as you can on a leisurely stroll through a farmers market. It’s in the culture and community, in the way friends run into each other on the street or at their favorite coffee shop. Chico is many things to many people, but perhaps more than anything else, it’s one of the easiest cities to fall in love with.
More so than almost anywhere you’re likely to visit, Chico makes it effortless to fall into something new and exciting, no matter where in the city you happen to end up. It’s a college town big enough to be home to a rich array of art, culture, and opportunity, but still small enough that strangers smile at one another on the
street, and you’re all but guaranteed to catch sight of someone you know around town. It’s the kind of laidback place where casual dress will get you everywhere, where anything you want to do is only a short walk or drive away, and a little bit of money goes a long way.
Exploration in Chico happens every time you walk out the door. If you’re an art lover, the city is loaded with it, from cafes and coffee shops with their own galleries (such as Naked Lounge, one of Downtown Chico’s venerated cafe spaces), to public art all over downtown and the CSU Chico campus. Museums are plentiful and cheap too, whether you stroll through the Chico History Museum, get inspired at the Museum of Northern California Art (monca), or attend the annual ice cream social at the history-rich Stansbury Home.
While you’re exploring the city, don’t be surprised if you end up making friends with people you’ve just met. Chico is a place where neighbors greet each other and it’s easy to strike up a conversation almost anywhere. It has a robust and social coffee culture that can stand up to cities three times its size, and a patio life born out of California’s beautiful weather, making its social scene accessible to everyone. And with so many dog-friendly restaurants, bars, and cafes—to say nothing of the city’s wealth of public park spaces—you and your companions, canine or otherwise, will never have to work hard to make new friends.
If you’re looking for outdoor adventure in and around Chico, you’ll stumble upon it almost anywhere you look. Easy walks are available all over Lower Bidwell Park, and Upper Bidwell Park is full of both relaxed and challenging hikes that serve up spectacular views but don’t require any investment in outdoor gear to enjoy. And you won’t need a boat to get on the water on a hot summer day, with no less than seven swimming areas to dive into. Whether you prefer a dunk in Big Chico Creek at Sycamore Pool, just a short walk from downtown, or a more secluded plunge in one of Upper Bidwell Park’s natural pools like Bear Hole or Salmon Hole, Chico will help you cool off and chill out.
All this just a stone’s throw from wherever you’re staying. If you don’t have your own transportation, public transit is available, and Chico is a wonderfully walkable city, whether you’re checking out downtown or heading into its wild spaces. With so many opportunities for exploration, you’re sure to find where you were meant to go, even if you started out with no idea where you were headed.

Exploring Chico by bicycle is fun and easy, with 11 paved, multi-use bike paths throughout the city. Most establishments in Chico are bicyclefriendly, which means there is usually well-lit and secure bike parking nearby. You’ll also find many ways to ride to popular creeksides, swimming holes, or even the Sacramento River for more outdoor fun.
On average, there are over 300 sunny days a year in Chico, which means cycling is a year-round activity. Throughout the spring and summer, there are regular group rides that vary in distance, speed, and style. Community members will often call out opportunities to join for a “decide and ride,” with descriptions of the type of ride they are expecting:
Road rides usually are between 20-50 miles and have minimal climbing.
Gravel rides can be flat, like on the levees or in Lower Bidwell Park.
Mountain bike rides in Upper Bidwell Park are beginner-friendly near Horseshoe Lake, and increase sharply in skill level as the trails leave flat ground. Know before you go!
Find these rides by exploring social media or calling one of the bike shops and asking them for a current menu of weekly group rides. Good apps for local cycling are Ride with GPS, Trailforks, and Strava.
From the Sierra Nevada foothills to the Sacramento River, everything in Chico is a bike ride waiting to happen!

Almost every bikeway in Chico is multi-use, with the exception of Upper Bidwell Park, where some trails are pedestrian-only. This means that knowing the rules of the road, trail etiquette, and having the right gear is important wherever you ride!
Road Rules: Follow traffic laws, wear a helmet, and ride at safe speeds for your ability and conditions. We recommend using the bike routes that connect the city!
Trail Etiquette: Yield to pedestrians, equestrians, and uphill riders. Please do not modify trails. Stay on the right side of the pathways in Upper and Lower Bidwell Park.

HIKE CHICO
Ready for fun hiking adventures? Bring your hiking shoes to Chico and discover jaw-dropping trails without ever leaving the city limits. Whether you’re just looking for a short walk or a wild experience, here’s what you need to know about hiking in Chico.
Hit the Trails
Most hiking opportunities in Chico are found in Bidwell Park, which is divided into lower and upper parts. Lower Bidwell Park is mostly flat, making it perfect for gentle walks or trail running as it follows Big Chico Creek from Downtown Chico all the way to the foothills. There are many access points into Lower Park, but One Mile Recreation Area and Cedar Grove area offer the most parking.
For bigger adventures, head to Upper Bidwell Park, which features more than 40 miles of trails. Upper Park is centered on Big Chico Creek Canyon, with
trails climbing up both the south and north rims of the canyon. Each rim has outstanding views, especially from popular viewpoints like Monkey Face and Peregrine Point, though you’ll find easier trails that are close to the scenic Big Chico Creek at the bottom of the canyon. Park at one of several parking lots near Horseshoe Lake, where many Upper Park hikes start. There are also trailheads further into the canyon past the lake along Upper Park Road, which is closed to vehicles on Sundays and Mondays as well as during wet weather. You’ll also find other trailheads for South Rim hikes along Highway 32.

Every season brings new hiking experiences to Chico.
SPRING
Springtime is a great time of year to plan out longer hikes, with milder temperatures, longer days, and carpets of wildflowers.
SUMMER
The heat is on, but Lower Park keeps it cool with a huge canopy of trees. Upper Park’s Yahi Trail has a lot of shade on its way to refreshing swimming holes. Early morning hikes and sunset strolls are the best times to enjoy.

First time hiking in Chico? Here are several popular introductions to the local hiking scene:
MONKEY FACE
Take in views of Chico, the Sacramento Valley, and beyond from this iconic rock formation in Upper Bidwell Park.
YAHI TRAIL
This shady, pedestrian-only trail in Upper Bidwell Park follows along Big Chico Creek and features great spots to stop for a picnic or a dip in natural swimming holes.
CHICO SEED ORCHARD
Enjoy an easy, scenic stroll in this under-the-radar botanical gem, filled with hundreds of different plant species.
BIG CHICO CREEK ECOLOGICAL RESERVE
Explore a wilder side of Big Chico Creek Canyon in a quieter, less-visited space.
FALL
The fall colors in Chico are some of the best in Northern California. Enjoy the show all throughout Lower Park as well as along forested trails in Upper Park like the Yahi Trail, Annie Bidwell Trail, and 10-Mile House Road.
WINTER
Take in the emerald-green landscape of Upper Park. Trails in the shade become lush with moss and ferns, and seasonal waterfalls come to life after rainstorms.
Hiking Tips
Hiking in Chico is always a fun experience, so make sure you get the most out of your adventure with these tips:
Bring plenty of water, especially for longer or warm weather hikes.
Some trails in Upper Park are rocky with uneven terrain, so make sure your shoes are up to the task.
Bidwell Park is also popular with mountain bikers and equestrians, so keep an eye out for other trail users.
Ticks, snakes, and poison oak are potential hazards on any trail in Northern California. The best way to avoid issues is to stay on-trail and be aware of your surroundings.

FLOAT CHICO
You don’t have to go far to chill out in Chico. Whether you’re jumping into Big Chico Creek at Bear Hole or laying out at the Washout with your toes in the Sacramento River, you’ll be ready to cool off in the summer heat.
Big Chico Creek
Featuring half a dozen urban swimming holes, Big Chico Creek is perhaps the most popular water feature in Chico!
In Lower Bidwell Park, One Mile Recreation Area’s Sycamore Pool is a unique concrete basin filled with the naturally flowing water of the creek. This urban swimming pool has been around for generations and has become a truly iconic Chico experience. It’s also easy to get to, at only a mile upstream from downtown and CSU Chico, and perfect for families. The Five Mile Recreation Area is another fun, family-friendly stop for those wanting to splash around while picnicking under a canopy of trees. The rest of Big Chico Creek in Lower Bidwell Park is usually pretty shallow during the warm season and lined with dozens of cozy picnic sites.
Once you’re in Upper Bidwell Park, the swimming holes along Big Chico Creek get wilder! The tamest swimming holes in this part of the park are Alligator Hole and Day Camp. Featuring small sand and gravel beaches for lounging, mellow and shallow waters in the summer, and easy access from the Yahi Trail, these two swimming holes are popular with families bringing young children. The cool waters of the creek are especially refreshing after a long hike!
For a splashier adventure, head to Bear Hole and Diversion Dam. Jump in (feet first!) to the deeper waters, or catch some rays on the prominent basalt rocks here. You can park at Bear Hole Tuesday through Saturday, but it’s less than two miles away from Horseshoe Lake if you want to walk in. You’ll be hiking for sure if you want to make it to super-scenic Salmon Hole or remote Brown’s Hole, but the pristine and remote settings will make the hike worth it.
Sacramento River
Just west of Chico, the Sacramento River is another classic location for water recreation, from tubing and boating to shoreline fishing and sunbathing.
There’s perhaps no more quintessentially Chico way to experience the Sacramento River than with an inner tube float, a popular tradition for college students and locals alike, especially around holiday weekends like Labor Day. The classic river float starts at Irvine Finch Boat Launch and takes you downstream to Pine Creek or the Washout. Plan on the float from Irvine Finch to Pine Creek Access (or Pine Creek to Washout) to take about an hour and half to two hours, depending on the flow. Give yourself extra time to find a gravel bar to relax at along the way!
Irvine Finch Boat Launch, Pine Creek Access, the Washout, and an additional small boat launch near the mouth of Big Chico Creek are all part of Bidwell-Sacramento River State Park. These are all great places to start a kayak adventure, a fishing trip, or a cruise on your stand-up paddleboard. Even if you don’t have a boat, gravel bars and beaches along the river remain stunning options for chilling out in Chico.
WATER RECREATION TIPS
Waters can run cold and swift early in the season.
A day-use fee is required to park at Irvine Finch Boat Launch. Bidwell Park is also popular with mountain bikers and equestrians, so keep an eye out for other trail users.
Be aware of other boats and obstacles in the water while floating downstream in the Sacramento River.
Make sure to wear water shoes while in Big Chico Creek.
Remember to bring plenty of water and sun protection!
CHICO THROUGH THE SEASONS
CHICO: NO BETTER TIME THAN NOW
There are two ways to think about timing a visit to Chico: that there’s never a bad time to visit, and that every time is the perfect time. With a busy calendar of events, outdoor activities for every season, and streets that transform themselves each quarter, Chico is a year-round destination that will never leave you hunting for things to do.
Few places manage to be both so seasonally varied and consistently worth a visit all year as Chico. So whenever you feel the need to get away, there’s never a better time than now to pay us a visit.

Chico’s hiking game is second to none, and while any time of year will serve outdoor enthusiasts here, the spring provides practically perfect scenery anywhere you look, be it in one of Chico’s beautiful public parks or on the outskirts of the city. Head to Upper Bidwell Park for waterfalls refreshed by late winter precipitation, including the landmark Lovejoy Falls, and enjoy the wildflowers that follow them. The blooms happen all across town, and it’s a great time to take a walk through CSU Chico’s public campus. It’s loaded with trees and greenery along Big Chico Creek, which runs straight through the grounds, and the renowned George Peterson Rose Garden also begins to bloom in spring.
SUMMER
Chico’s water culture makes it a great place to spend a hot Norcal summer. Popular swimming holes range in location, from close to downtown to the further reaches of Upper Bidwell Park, giving everyone just the right space to cool off. Big Chico Creek itself also has any number of easy spots to swim or kayak. For those who’d prefer to stay dry, there are also shaded hikes in both Lower and Upper Bidwell Park, and it’s a perfect time to walk through the beautiful Chico Seed Orchard. There are plenty of bars and restaurants with shaded patios, and the rose garden at Chico State kicks into high gear in summer. Farmers markets offer another great way to enjoy the (literal) fruits of summer, especially at Downtown Chico’s Thursday Night Market, where you can avoid the heat of the day, find something cool to drink, and browse CDFA-certified produce, local art, and a whole lot more.
FALL
There’s nowhere in Chico that doesn’t boast jaw-dropping fall colors! If you’re up for a walk or hike, you’ll have great options from the Seed Orchard to Bidwell Park. Downtown Chico also has plenty to see, with the colorful Esplanade and Bidwell Mansion’s historic (and absolutely stunning) ginkgo tree, which explodes into a display of vibrant yellows. Disc golf at the beautiful Peregrine Point, or any of Chico’s other courses, becomes increasingly tempting as temperatures drop, and the fall vibes hit their height around Halloween with Treat Street, where downtown closes to traffic and businesses offer candy to kids of all ages. And don’t miss the annual Pumpkin Drop in CSU Chico’s Trinity Commons!
WINTER
California is known for its mild winters, and Chico is no exception, which makes it a wonderfully cozy winter vacation destination. As Christmas approaches, the cozy vibes multiply exponentially, and Chico’s Christmas Preview, a local tradition since 1978, brings lights, carolers, and even Santa himself downtown for the season. There’s also an outdoor ice skating rink for the whole family right in the middle of Chico City Plaza! Fans of the outdoors won’t be neglected either, with waterfalls resurrected by winter rains in Upper Bidwell Park, almond blossoms in nearby agricultural communities, and green hills stretching to the horizon.

CHILD’S PLAY: KID-FRIENDLY CHICO
BY
Chico offers a wide variety of activities that are perfect for children of all ages. No matter the weather and no matter the season, there’s always something fun to explore. Here are a few of our family’s favorite activities, but there are many other adventures to be had. Come visit and see for yourself!
TAKING OFF AT THE CHICO AIR MUSEUM
This museum is a hidden gem of Chico! Located at the Chico Airport, it has a WWII Army Air Corps hangar full of amazing old airplanes, helicopters, and aviation-related artifacts. The museum hosts several large events throughout the year (like a Santa Claus fly-in at Christmas time!), but is also a place to learn and explore during their regular business hours. Lastly, there are a few large planes outside of the hangar along with some kid-sized toy airplanes that your kids can “drive” around! We think this place is definitely worth a visit while you’re in Chico.
VISITING PARKS
Chico has many fantastic parks to pick from, but our favorites include Chapman Park, Caper Acres, and Wildwood Park. Your water babies will love Chapman Park, which features the only splash pad in Chico. Caper Acres is a local staple, with an inclusive play structure, a sand play area, swings, and the iconic “cheese wedge”. Nestled at the base of Upper Bidwell Park, Wildwood Park features a bike pump track for kids and adults, baseball fields, a half mile walking path, multiple play structures, and soccer fields.

PLAYING AT THE CHICO CHILDREN’S MUSEUM
When the weather is too hot or too wet, the Chico Children’s Museum is top on our list for inside play because it’s a place where your child’s imagination can go wild! There is a small entrance fee, but it’s worth it for all the fun you will have while visiting. Located in Downtown Chico, it’s perfectly located for checking out all that our vibrant downtown has to offer.
GETTING HANDS-ON AT THE GATEWAY SCIENCE MUSEUM
Tucked away on the edge of Chico State’s campus, the Gateway Science Museum is a great place to wander and discover with your family. There are many constantly changing exhibits to check out, so it’s a fun place to visit multiple times throughout the year! They also offer hands-on science experiments and projects on various weekends throughout the year. Gateway Science Museum is also surrounded by several beautiful gardens, perfect for learning more or just wandering about.
HIKING IN UPPER BIDWELL PARK
Upper Bidwell Park is an adventure waiting to happen, with two trails in particular that are great for introducing hiking to your kids. The first is Monkey Face, a short (about 1-1.5 miles) out-and-back hike that peaks at the top of a rock that, yes, looks like the face of a monkey and features stunning views of the entire city below. While this trail is steep, it’s short and manageable for the whole family! The second is Yahi Trail, another outand-back hike that’s significantly less technical than Monkey Face. The heavily shaded trail meanders along Big Chico Creek, and within two miles of the Horseshoe Lake parking lot, you’ll find three swimming holes that are perfect for taking a well-earned rest!
LEARNING AT THE CHICO CREEK NATURE CENTER
The Chico Creek Nature Center is next on our list for an indoor excursion. The center is wonderful for learning more about animals and nature in the area, and you can enjoy weekly and monthly events all year round!

CHICO AFTER DARK
BY DAVID SELKIRK
As the sun goes down, step into the exciting and entertainmentfilled night life of Chico.
DOING IT LIVE
With venues spread throughout town, you’ll encounter everything from acoustic bluegrass bands playing under the moonlight at the Meriam Park Barn to high-energy jam bands playing on stage at Winchester Goose. Chico’s music scene is diverse, and full of creative locals, touring bands, and headlining acts. The hardest part is choosing which tickets to purchase!
You can’t go wrong with the major stages, each with wildly different vibes. Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.’s Big Room has world-class live music events right in the middle of its brewing operation, and both the El Rey Theater and Senator Theatre bring a touch of the classic to downtown with their distinctive decorative touches. A variety of acts come regularly to all three venues, from comedy to big bands and DJs.
Then there are medium-sized venues like the iconic Lost on Main, hosting a variety of unique performers, from metal and funk to reggae and rock, and everything in between. If you’re in the mood for something more chill, pour your own beer and check out the newly updated outdoor venue at The Commons Social Empourium.

DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY
Bring a partner and get ready to move! Chico is the place where you can hit up the honky-tonk line dancing at Crazy Horse Saloon or turn up the floor at Duffy’s Tavern Dance Night all in the same evening—and that’s just on a Wednesday night. The weekends bring DJs and electronic beats to get your toes tapping. Enjoy DJ nights at Argus Bar + Patio, The Beach, and Parkside Tap House. Chico’s many dance nights are notorious for big laughs, good drinks, and music that makes your heart pump.
THE MORE THE MERRIER
It could be a celebration, bachelor party, or girls night out; whatever you’re doing, it’s always more fun with friends, so spice up the night with more than just good cocktails. Rent a private room filled with colorful lights, strobing effects, and your favorite jams at Karaoke Television, where you can sing your heart out. Perform as loud as you want—we promise the other rooms can’t hear you.
Have some intellectuals in your group? Come up with a team name, because the sign-up sheet for trivia night at Discovery Bar is waiting for you. If your combined smarts put you on top, you can win some prizes from local Chico companies, but be prepared—competition can get heated. You can also indulge your competitive spirit, either alone or up against your friends, at Madison Bear Garden’s unforgettably ridiculous trike races—which are hysterical to watch, but should definitely be participated in for the full experience. Their classic Bear-e-oke nights, where everyone can fuel up and spend a night feeling like a rock star, are also not to be missed.
DIVE RIGHT IN
Few things are better than the rustic charm of an old fashioned dive bar, and Chico has an abundance, perfect for classic drinks and playing a few games of pool. Established in 1961, the Oasis Bar and Grill is the oldest bar in town. The Chico State alumni staple is famous for its pool tables, burgers, Bloody Marys, and pictures of old Chico hung all over the walls. Another favorite is The Banshee. Once featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, it’s always packed with people enjoying delicious pub food and cold draft beer. A good Chico dive is the perfect spot to start the evening and end the night, all the way to last call.

CHICO STATE
A CAMPUS PARK FOR EVERYONE
BY CLAYTON TRUSCOTT
Steps away from restaurants and boutiques, yet enchanted and tranquil, Chico State is its own historic neighborhood in the city’s downtown core. Since 1887, it has been a cornerstone of local arts and culture as well as a captivating educational backdrop for generations of Wildcats, with memories and school pride reflected in every inch of the well-loved and cared-for grounds.
A visit to campus holds something special for everyone, and the best way to get acquainted with the iconic Chico gem is on foot, the way scores of Chicoans do every day.
STROLL THE CAMPUS ARBORETUM
Officially a dedicated arboretum spanning 132 acres, the Chico State campus is a living, breathing collection of native and rare trees and plants, which mark time by showing off their deep and mesmerizing colors each season.
Accessible to all levels of mobility, a network of pathways and trails allows visitors to follow their curiosity. No matter where you go, you’ll want to stop often to fully appreciate the more than 1,000 species of plants and trees, wildlife skittering and fluttering around, and the constant song of Big Chico Creek flowing through campus. If you’re lucky, you might even see one of the fabled otters frolicking in its waters.

FEEL THE WILDCAT SPIRIT
The best way to experience the Wildcat spirit up close is at a home game supporting one of Chico State’s Division II athletics programs. The dedicated athletes embody the Do and Dare spirit of the University every time they play their hearts out. Whether it’s cheering courtside, in the bleachers, or at the stadium, you’ll be a lifelong fan by the final whistle.
BE A PATRON OF THE ARTS
Both story and art are embedded into the campus landscape and architecture. There are sculptures and frescoes by alumni and noteworthy creatives, including the Three Sisters facing the rose garden and the wildspirited Monoliths outside of Ayres Hall. At the corner of the Arts & Humanities Building (ARTS) is a rotating student mural space. While at ARTS, visit the interior courtyard on weekdays for a chance to catch ceramics and glassblowing students creating their crafts on full display.
Chico State also brings a wide range of new and returning performers and shows to Chico every year, most of which are open to the public. Laxson Auditorium, the university’s premier venue, hosts more than 100 performances annually. And musicals from the School of the Arts are not to be missed, as talented students from an array of majors put on shows that rival big-city stages.
SNAP A SELFIE AT THE ROSES
No trip to Chico State is complete without a stop at the George Petersen Rose Garden. Originally planted in 1957, it holds roughly 400 bushes today and creates a calming detour for meandering students and visitors. In addition to beautifying the campus, it also contributes to the University’s status as a Certified Butterfly Garden by the National Butterfly Association (among other accolades).
The Chico State experience goes well beyond the boundaries of campus. It’s something you feel, share, and recognize in other people who understand it. Chico State is proud to be a welcoming campus that promotes its culture of belonging by making every visitor feel like a Wildcat— so come and experience this for yourself.
TAKE A CREEK-SIDE BREAK
The creek has several spots that are prime places to unwind. A popular one is the Mary Lemcke Camellia Garden, with its canopy of trees and view of the water. From there, it’s a short stroll over the Gus Manolis Bridge—one of nine walking bridges at Chico State—to the heart of campus.

DINE & DELIGHT
and @trevclave
With some of the best food and drink in the North State, Chico’s culinary community is welcoming to everyone, whether they’re a true gourmet or a more casual diner. Nobody will blame you for having trouble choosing from such a huge array of options, so here are some suggestions to help you pick the right place for the right occasion.
FIRST DATES LEAVE AN IMPRESSION
For a picture-perfect first date, Chico has a bevy of great locations to grab a bite, a cocktail, or both. For a taste of Southern Italy, the Sicilian Cafe offers traditional Italian dishes sure to please any palate. Burban Kitchen provides some of Meriam Park’s finest dining, with a wide variety of small plates and flatbreads complimenting a rich selection of entrees, wines, and spirits—and cocktails for two! For those whose tastes carry them eastward, Aonami’s menu of sustainable sushi creations (including some excellent vegan rolls) compliments an upscale-yet-relaxed atmosphere. Momona’s east-meets-west menu of ramen and bao fit perfectly into its modern aesthetic, and if your date runs long, they offer a late-night streetside bao window on Friday and Saturday nights.
When you need to take things up a notch, Chico also has plenty of upscale dining available, from Nama Sake Sushi & Restaurant, Meriam Park’s premiere sushi spot, to 5th Street Steakhouse, which has long been one of Downtown Chico’s go-to dining destinations for a fancy night on the town. Basque Norte features a Basque-style fine dining menu with a selection of steaks, seafood, and tapas. You can enjoy a great drink at any of these establishments, but try Red Tavern for one of the most robust wine lists in the county alongside its sumptuous dinner offerings.

INTERNATIONAL TASTES
Chico boasts a surprisingly robust slate of international dining. Priya Indian Cuisine offers an unbeatable array of Indian dishes (including an unrivaled lunch buffet), and Sofi’z Kitchen and Bar ups the ante with incredible, authentic Pakistani food served in one of the most personable and colorful establishments in the city. Meze Moon has Mediterranean food to die for, from baba ghanoush to moussaka and everything in between, while Cocodine Thai Cuisine has bright, spicy curries and soups in addition to your favorite Thai comfort foods—plus amazing desserts to boot.
DOG FRIENDLY
Chico is a dog-lover’s paradise, and its restaurants reflect this. You can bring your canine companions to many of the city’s establishments, including B Street Public House and its covered patio, where you can grab fresh beignets every day to have with brunch or breakfast, salads, sandwiches, and more. The outdoor seating at Downtown Chico favorite Burgers and Brew also allows dogs, who will be more than happy to share a bite of your burger or fries, and the lovely patio at The Rawbar Restaurant and Sushi is a perfect seat for your fluffy friend to park while you enjoy sushi, poke, and cocktails under Chico’s sunny skies. Both Parkside Taphouse and Farmers Brewing Restaurant & Taproom also make great places to take your dogs, with great American cuisine and plenty of gorgeous brews.
SWEET TREATS
Chico’s legendary sweet tooth has produced equally epic shops to cater to it. Savor Ice Cream has become a local favorite, with handcrafted, seasonal flavors you’ll never find anywhere else, including a selection of decadent vegan options. Sweet Chico Confections is a Chico classic for a reason, with an astounding stock of your favorite candies and dozens of flavors of gelato and sorbetto. Tin Roof Bakery & Cafe is a perfect place for lunch, but its assortment of baked goods is so sinfully delicious, you may just have to go back for seconds.

The Allies Pub serves up classic American-style ales and IPAs in addition to a range of British classics, including stouts, porters, and both English and Scottish ales, some from their own British Bulldog Brewery label. You can sample some of Northern California’s best wines at any of Chico’s local wineries and tasting rooms. DISTILLING
Chico gets into the spirits game with Golden Beaver Distillery. You can sample local moonshine made from the region’s storied Calrose rice and rice malt, a California-styled rice soju, bourbons and rye whiskies, vodka, gin, and even grappa at both the main distillery and its Park Avenue Still House.
Sierra Nevada Brewery

CHICO: WHERE AG GOES URBAN
Chico is widely known for the many things it grows, from Chico State’s active agricultural sector to the produce of the city’s many local growers. But Chico is unique in the way it’s perfectly settled amid the green pastures of Butte County, giving it both a rich farm and garden scene and a surprisingly urban ag experience you can see up close.
Take It Home
Chico State’s 800-acre University Farm is one of the best-known agricultural icons of the area, serving students since it was founded in 1960. It also serves the local community through the student-led sale of its products at the university Meats Lab, the Organic Vegetable Project’s popular CSA membership, and the annual Peach Pick, which allows anyone to come and pick their own fresh peaches straight from the trees at the farm.
But agricultural education is far from the only way that you can experience local food in Chico. CSA memberships abound, from the innovative, no-till Burns Blossom Farm and its organic produce to the certified organic Comanche Creek Farms, just a few miles from downtown. You can purchase a variety of vegetables from many farms at Chico’s ubiquitous farmers markets, or pick up their produce from local shops such as the Chico Natural Foods CoOp, S&S Market, and New Earth Market. Chico also has farms like Massa Organics and Chico Rice that provide fantastic Northern California rice in a region already famous for it. Anywhere you are in the city, you’re never far from something home-grown.

EAT IN SEASON
Restaurants in Chico are often unlike what you’ll find elsewhere because they take advantage of this same farmto-table mentality. It’s hard to walk a block downtown without stumbling on an eatery serving up something grown nearby, and there are any number of places that focus on local cuisine.
Farm Star Pizza is a prime example, with both family-friendly pies and unique, elevated creations all loaded with 100% organic, in-season, locally produced ingredients (including vegan and vegetarian items). Not to be outshined, Drunken Dumpling also works to provide local, hand-made slow food in its menu of Asian-fusion dishes, and you might even spy the owners at a local farmers market. Downtown favorite Grana focuses on locally oriented menus that change with the season, going so far as to include blood oranges from its own yard in some of its offerings. And the Sierra Nevada Brewery Co. Taproom restaurant has a hyper-local focus, with both an estate garden and a certified organic kitchen garden on brewery grounds, both of which use compost produced on site.
GROW YOUR OWN
If you’ve got a green thumb or aspire to create your own home garden designs, Chico is home to first-rate nurseries, garden shops, feed-and-seed supply stores, and more. If you plan to take home local produce, make a little extra room for something green from The Plant Barn & Gifts, which offers starter vegetables, berry plants, leafy greens, and all manner of herbs. You can stock up on seeds and seedlings from supply companies like Northern Star Mills, or even pick up heirloom vegetable starters at Fair Earth Nursery, perfect for making your own urban garden.
Chico’s agricultural obsession is in evidence everywhere you look, and there’s no better place to get close to the things you love to eat. Few places have such a rich, urban culture paired with a love of all things that grow, so whatever community you come from, Chico will find a way to make you feel more in touch with your food than you’ve ever been before.
