School Year 2010-2011

Dear Students and Parents, Welcome to a new school year. For over 140 years, students, parents, and teachers have worked together here at Porter-Gaud to develop young scholars who possess strength of character, an understanding of integrity, and a sense of personal responsibility. We are first and foremost a learning community and, as such, we expect to find joy in asking why, in seeking answers that are bigger than our experience, in contemplating new ideas, and in stretching ourselves beyond our demonstrated abilities. Effective learning such as this occurs within a framework of genuine concern and respect for others and a desire to discipline oneself in the pursuit of long term goals. This handbook is intended to be an informative reference for understanding the structure, expectations, and procedures which aid in that process. I urge you to become well informed about the guidelines that we have established for all of our students. Parents, I also encourage you to get to know the persons who are most immediately involved in your child’s School life. His or her advisor, teachers, and coaches are a great first resource who may direct you to our Dean of Students, Chaplains, Counselors, or College Counselor for more specific help. If you have questions about anything in the handbook or about day-to-day life here at Porter-Gaud, please contact us. You will find us ready to offer assistance. Go Cyclones! Sarah L. Cuccio Upper School Principal
