Bowls for Boobs Benefits Locals

ur recent Bowls for Boobs to raise awareness and funds for Breast Cancer saw a total of $4741.90 raised across the 24 hour period. One of the major beneficieries of this event was the Hastings Cancer Trust. Have you ever wondered whether donations to cancer charities are used to treat patients within our local community? What about providing assistance for carers of local cancer patients ? Well the Hastings Cancer Trust is a local, registered, not for profit charity that has been established to link the generosity of the Hastings/Macleay communities specifically with the needs of cancer patients and their carers in our local region. Cancer remains a leading cause of death in Australia. Did you know that 1 in 3 Men and 1 in 4 Women will be diagnosed with cancer by the age of 75. As our local population continues to grow, we want to achieve nationally

recognised best practice standards of cancer treatment, facilities and research all to be delivered locally, without patients needing to travel to Newcastle or Sydney to receive their treatments. Since 2005 donations and fundraising have allowed the Trust to grant over $1,000,000 to worthy local recipients through our annual grants program. Importantly these grants have provided supplementary funding for projects and needs which are beyond the scope of ongoing Government funding.  Government funding only goes so far. The local grants program of the HCT helps to bridge this funding gap. Operated entirely by enthusiastic volunteers, every dollar raised for the Trust is put towards helping our local community.  If you would like to find out more information about the Trust and it’s activities, perhaps enquire about being a volunteer or simply to make a donation then please visit

What do you love about the Club?

You’ve recently started your Chef apprenticeship, what inspired you to undertake this?

A I have to say I really like the diversity of patronage and having the opportunity to work in more than one area, I love getting to know our members and having a joke with them. Also I have an appreciation for the family friendly atmosphere the Club has, I have a young daughter myself and trying to find somewhere to take the family out isn’t always easy so I enjoy bringing everyone here. Tell us all something we don’t know about you?

What cuisine do you like to cook?

A Most people don’t know I’m Tri-lingual, I speak Romanian, Dutch and English. I used to also speak French and German however I’ve forgotten it over time.

A I love to cook with salmon and different seafood’s, but im still young and have much to learn about in the field of different styles of cooking.

What did you do for work prior to Port City?

Who has impressed you most with what they’ve accomplished?

A I worked at a YMCA Children’s retreat in America which ran for 4 months and included about 20 programs. The retreat was on 5000 acres of land and we did things such as archery, paintball, geology walks & cave tours. It was heaps of fun, the kids used to call me Mr Bubbles which was a nickname I created as a joke however the kids loved it so the name stuck.

A I had been inspired to undertake an apprenticeship through my passion for food. All through my life Ive loved food especially as a kid, the smell the taste and the texture. I started my passion for food in year 10 in High School and continued my study for cooking through the rest of my High School life.

A I would have to say Gordan Ramsey. He was taught by the best in the industry (Marco Pierre White) and shortly after his training he took a 200,000 pound loan from the bank and within 3 years paid it back and created his own fully functioning restaurant with a great reputation.

If you could turn any activity into an Olympic sport, what would you have a good chance at winning medal for?

What would be your first question after waking up from being cryogenically frozen for 100 years?

A I think I would win an Olympic Medal in Yoga, many people under estimate yoga and its intensity.

A I would wake up and ask “What is there to eat?”
