Club Daily 9am until late

Courtesy Bus (see pages 10-11 for timetables) The club is approaching its first birthday of the renovations. Our Club suggestion and feedback forms have shown overwhelmingly the appreciation that members and guests have had for Drift, the new foyer and entry and gaming facilities and the great staff we have here at Port City Bowling Club. Not only that but the club membership set a new record with over 14,200 members joining as at the 31st May up from 12,000 in previous years. Management are still looking to improve our facilities and over the next few months will artificially grass the outdoor kid’s area and look to place some additional play equipment in the area. The club has been up-grading its air conditioning systems with 3 new units installed and another to go in before summer to cope with the temperatures that Port Macquarie endured last summer. Drift Café-Restaurant-Bar has a new special with its Rib Fest promotion. Every Thursday until September 21st you can purchase a succulent rack of pork ribs marinated in a BBQ bourbon sauce and get your favourite schooner of beer all for $20. If you want to try one of new craft beers just add $2. And don’t forget our popular Sunday Steak and Schooner promotion. Starting on the 1st August will be our fantastic Melbourne Cup promotion. The winners will enjoy a P& O cruise to Melbourne and stay aboard for 6 days. They will be transported to and return from Flemington by helicopter and enjoy pre booked tickets to the Skyline Restaurant including undercover tickets to the Hill Stand which is on the finish line. Limo transfers are included to the helicopter with complimentary champagne. What an experience! The Directors and Management would also like to congratulate Claudia Buckby who recently completed her “Kilimanjaro Challenge” trekking the mountain and raising $10,580 for the Leukaemia Foundation. What a great once in a life time experience and achievement. Hope to see you at the club.

Claudia’s Trek of a Lifetime

On 1st June 2017 I embarked on the journey of a life time, trekking to the roof of Africa to attempt summiting Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania Africa. What started as a (not so simple) fundraising challenge for the Leukaemia Foundation has ended in a much more personal endeavor made possible by so many supporters, family and friends! Our team of 18 strangers from all over Australia began our trek from the rain forests of Rongai Gate on the lower grounds on Mount Kilimanjaro National Park. 1 Head Guide, 8 guides and 62 porters all from African Scenic Safaris would be our life line – taking care of all our needs (including toilets for camp Yay)! Our first day of very slow paced walking ended at Simba Camp, elevation 2,615m asl. Our first meal and very meal after was amazing, served in a mess tent and usually consisted of a soup, followed by a hot main meal. Our first camping dinner – cucumber soup, bread, fried potatoes, fried fish and avocado salad. It did however become harder to eat as we gained altitude. It’s already so cold! So much colder than I had ever anticipated! I have no choice now 4

though but to deal with all adversities! We started walking at 8.30am the next day, pace is so slow but ok, with a great view of mountain. Arrived for lunch at Second Cave 3,450m asl - the porters set up entire tent up for lunch. A few people are already sick from altitude; I have had a headache but am controlling it with pain killers! Second half of the day has amazing landscapes – reminds me a bit of the deserts you see in America. Always walking with different team members and guides always having lots of laughs! We arrived to Kikelelwa camp at sunset 3,600m asl. It’s been a big day! Next day trekking is short but steep, arriving at Mawenzi Tarn Hut camp 4,315m asl. We stay here for 2 nights to help acclimatize, doing small treks around the site and lots of rest. Walking the saddle between Mawenzi Tarn and Uhuru Peak to base camp is like walking on the moon. There is no vegetation, the winds don’t stop and there is what seems like an untouchable peak rising up in front of us. Arriving at base camp- Kibo Hut 4720m asl. Signed in, had late lunch and sent to bed for a rest before big DDay!

SUMMIT MISSION: 10.00pm 6th June 2017 Woken up to get ready to start summit attempt 11.15pm 6th June 2017 Challenge team, 8 guides and 4 extra summit porters set out 6.30am 7th June 2017 Team stop to view sunrise, approx. 150m from Gilman’s Point 7.30am 7th June 2017 Reach Gilman’s Point, 5,685m asl 8.30am 7th June 2017 Reach Steela Point, 5,756m asl 10.15am 7th June 2017 Entire Team Reach Uhuru Peak, Africa’s Highest Point, 5,895m asl

11 hours from start of attempt, all 17 of our team Summit one of the World’s Tallest Freestanding Mountains in the World. And we still had to find reserves to trek out and to the next camp! Words cannot capture how we are all feeling and how hard this was – one of the hardest but most amazing things I have ever done, some even made it comparable to childbirth! Raising over $165,000.00 for the Leukaemia Foundation and pushing ourselves way beyond any limits we thought we had – what an amazing team! Thank you to all my supporters, family and friends. Port City Bowling Club, Patrons and its Sub-Clubs have been so generous in their time and donations and have been instrumental in getting me to the top! THANK YOU.

Our fundraising will be available until August 2017. If you would like to donate, please go to: www.my.leukaemiafoundation.org.au/ Claudiabuckby 5

What started as an entertained idea for a money fight all became a quick reality for Irish UFC fighter Conor McGregor as Floyd Mayweather called for him to step up and sign the paper for the 180 million dollar dance on March 7. McGregor 28 will debut his professional boxing career against retired undefeated boxer Mayweather on Sunday August 27 in Las Vegas. The focused UFC lightweight champion, McGregor says that he will KO in the fourth round but what are the odds you ask? Bookies have immediately backed Mayweather for the win with William Hill putting the veteran fighter at 1/11 favourite.

Don’t miss the most anticipated fight of the year with Port City showing the match live on August 27. Time will soon be confirmed once match is announced on Main Event, keep up to date using Port City’s Facebook page or website. 15

Interview with Phil Baker The game of lawn bowls is slowly starting to shift, what do you see as the future of lawn bowls in 10 years? A: Within the next few years we will see the game turn into a much faster and more exciting game following the 20/20 version of cricket, bowls is quickly moving into a more commercialised and spectator sport now being showcased regularly on Fox Sports. We look forward to the younger generation being involved at all levels of our sport. You have been pretty successful in the game of bowls yourself, how long have you been playing and tell us about some of your accolades. A: WOW – How much time have we got! LOL – I have been playing bowls for 25yrs after been introduced to it by my Mother Betty Baker who was the club ladies single champion here at Port City. Winning Premier League in 2005 was something I will never forget. Winning Back to Back club singles championships here at Port City was very special as well as approx. 15 district and Zone Titles over my career.

The 2017 Bowls NSW Inter-zone side championships is soon approaching. What can we expect to look forward to at this event? A: This event is the second biggest event on the NSW Bowls calendar, we will have 16 selected teams across the state taking part here at Port city to win the NSW inter zone sides championships early September. Several of our Jackaroos will be on display including Aron Sherriff. All our existing NSW Keno Blues will also be competing along with several of our own local talent. If our social members would like to join how much is it and what is available to new members? A: We now have introduced an associate 1yr men’s bowling club membership fee for $15.00. This membership is to encourage our existing social members, barefoot bowlers and our Corporate Jack Attack bowlers to come along and play social bowls as well as free coaching. We are very excited about this new membership going forward.
