opportunities The focal areas of the Port of Turku’s business are passenger traffic and goods transports. We are constantly working to develop and enhance the operating conditions and aim at creating new services and developing the existing ones to meet the requirements of both the shipping companies and their customers.

The role of our company in the development work is to create opportunities and remove any obstacles of development. An example of the work done so far is the opening of new shipping routes serving the Finnish exports. At the same time, the fleets in both the passenger and goods transports have been renewed, thus providing more capacity and offering more versatility for the transport services. The port enterprise, together with its partners, supports the development of services e.g. by renovating the Port’s infrastructure, such as quays, terminals

and cranes, as well as investing in building of warehouses. The speed of services plays a crucial role in the competitiveness of the Port of Turku. In addition to fast ship services, it means efficient cargo handling, easy embarkation and disembarkation of passengers, as well as direct road connections to the most important cities. The speed of services is particularly important in the traffic between Finland and Sweden, as the tight schedule only allows the ship to stay in the harbour for a maximum of one hour. Today, environmental issues are particularly pronounced in the port operations. The Port of Turku has been a pioneer of environmental activities for a long time. For example, environmental port charges were introduced in 2006, and the ships calling in the port are offered the opportunity to dispose of their waste waters. At the same time, we have significantly improved the energy efficiency of the company’s own operations and reduced the environmental impacts of port operations.

As the centre for Scandinavian transports in Finland the Port of Turku plays an important role in the transport chains of both Finnish export industries and imports. The Port’s definite strengths are frequent scheduled ship routes, and good road connections to the Helsinki metropolitan area, the west coast and further hinterland. The Port of Turku is also part of the E18 development corridor that reaches all the way to St Petersburg and forms the EU’s most important route to Russia. The Port of Turku is the leading passenger harbour for Scandinavian traffic and number two in Finland measured by the total number of passengers. Passenger traffic comprises frequent ferry connections between Finland and Sweden as well as cruise traffic in the Baltic Sea. The route to Sweden is operated by two shipping companies

using modern passenger ferries, Tallink Silja and Viking Line, which are also important cargo carriers. There are four daily departures from Turku, two in the morning and two in the evening. There is a separate quay at the mouth of the River Aura reserved for cruise liners visiting Turku within a short distance from the sights and services at the heart of the city.

Passenger harbour

Linnanaukko The Linnanaukko area serves unitised cargo transports as well as lo-lo and bulk transports. With good road connections, the area also houses the biggest privately owned lorry terminals in the port.

The railway to the Port supports traffic and enables combining sea transports with rail transports. The Linnanaukko area offers the possibility for transfer loading of railway wagons.

The West Harbour is designed to serve ro-ro transports and the growing international container transports. The two container terminals and four lightweight halls in the area allow for handling of cargo whatever the weather. Turku Container Terminal (TCT) utilises state-of-theart technology and enables the loading and unloading of containers in the Portâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s facilities instead of the customerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s premises.

West Harbour

Free Zone Company and the Ovako area Turku Free Zone Company is located in the immediate vicinity of the portâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ro-ro berths. Nearly 30 hectares of guarded field areas especially serve the imports of cars and agricultural machines. The warehouses in the area offer 30,000 m2 indoor storage space, part of which is temperature-regulated and suited to storage of foods. There are also various cargo handling services available.

The Ovako area is one of the largest and most modern logistics clusters in Finland. The total floor area of the biggest distribution and warehousing terminals in the area is around 75,000 m2. The Ovako area is also the location of specialised logistics services for different branches of industry, large lorry terminals, and companies operating in the metal industry.

Designed for unitised cargo, the ro-ro harbour offers excellent premises for project loads besides the spacious facilities for cargo handling. The area has two 5,000 m2 warehouses right next to the berth and more than 140,000 m2

of asphalted field space. The large field areas make the Pansio Harbour ideally suited to car imports and exports as well as the needs of the local shipyards and other heavy industry. Logistics warehouses with a total floor area of 50,000 m2 are being planned for the area at this moment.

Strong concept The Port of Turku and its partners form a major cluster of logistics services that also extends to the surrounding areas. The services provided by the Port to vessel traffic are complemented by modern warehousing and terminal services that meet the needs of both long-term storage and fast-paced distribution operations. Extra benefit is provided by the efficient road connections, such as Suikkilantie road which speeds up the traffic to and from the Port.

Long-term storage and related distribution operations have been concentrated next to the Port where more than 100,000 square metres of new warehouse space has been built during the past decade. The majority of the premises are located in the immediate vicinity of the Port in the Ovako area where many of the biggest players are based. Large warehouse capacity can also be found in the Pansio harbour where a new hall with a floor area of 7,000 square metres was completed in late 2015. In addition to indoor premises, the Port has large field areas for the outdoor storage of e.g. vehicles and large components.

responds to the business needs The warehousing and distribution operations of fast-moving goods are located by the Turku bypass road. Due to increasing demand, the possibility to build a large distribution terminal near Turku Airport is being studied. Large capacity of premises and services have contributed to the development of logistics co-operation with heavy metal industry and shipyard industry. The industry imports various

raw materials and components through the Port for whose intermediate warehousing the Port offers excellent conditions. Similarly, the Port serves heavy industry in the exports of e.g. mining equipment and steel industry products. As a result of positive development, the vessel traffic capacity in the Port of Turku has grown and continues to do so thanks to new vessels and routes.

Co-operation

ensures the safety of maritime traffic The Port of Turku collaborates in many ways with different authorities. One of the most important of them is the Finnish Transport Agency which has concentrated the supervision of the western sea area to the Western Finland Vessel Traffic Centre, located in Auriga Business Center under the same roof with the Port of Turku. The VTS area of the Centre reaches from west of Hanko all the way to Tornio, in addition to which the traffic separation scheme of Ă&#x2026;land islands is also supervised from Turku. Furthermore, the Centre operates Turku Radio which is responsible for the communication on maritime safety. The Turku Vessel Traffic Centre controls the vessel traffic in the area and provides the vessels with services for maritime safety. The location of the centre in the same premises as the other maritime operators enables deeper co-operation between different authorities. The benefit is emphasised particularly in the management of exceptional situations when all authorities are based in the same place.

The Turku Vessel Traffic Centre has made a collaboration agreement with the ports of Turku and Naantali. Both ports have authorised the Centre to provide the VTS services in the water areas administered by them, as a result of which the VTS services continue without interruption from the state water areas to the quays. The co-operation has clarified the traffic arrangements on narrow fairways in the archipelago during the departure and arrival times of vessels. As for oil spill response, the Port of Turku co-operates with the Southwest Finland Emergency Services whose oil spill response depot has moved to Pansio district to premises leased from the Port. The depot serves as the main warehouse of equipment for demanding oil spill response cases. Furthermore, the vessels of the Emergency Services located in the Latokari area will be moved to the port area close to the new depot to speed up the oil spill response activities.

for industry shipments

The Port of Turku’s strategic decision to focus more and more on transports of processed general cargo has turned out to be successful. Alongside the traditionally strong truck transports, the flow of goods through the Port includes an increasing number of project loads of Finnish heavy industry. The positive development has been supported by new routes for goods transports and the increase of vessel capacity. Baltic Line sails from Turku via Poland, Denmark and Sweden to Norway. In spring 2015, the company introduced m/v Mini Star, a sister ship of m/v Link Star that started on this route a year earlier. The new vessel increased the cargo capacity on the route to a total of 8,000 tonnes, and Lysekil on the west coast of Sweden was added as a new port on the route. Both vessels operate according to a regular

weekly schedule on the route Turku–Swinoujscie–Fredericia–Lysekil–Norwegian ports. The ports in southern Norway include Bergen from where the cargo can be shipped on Nor Lines’ coastal service as far as Hammerfest. The ships depart from Turku on Wednesdays. Both of Baltic Line’s vessels are equipped with stern and side gates and opening deck hatches. That allows for carrying a wide variety of cargo, such as products of heavy engineering and steel industries which require demanding load handling. In addition to those, the ships carry plenty of forest industry products, chemicals and animal feeds, and as deck cargo containers, boats and project shipments. The ro-ro ramps of the vessels also allow Baltic Line to fulfil the transport needs for machines and equipment mounted on wheels or crawler.

Cost-efficient connections

A fast connection from Turku to The Port of Turku provides precise and cost-efficient services to the export transportation needs of the Finnish engineering and technology industries and other businesses also to transoceanic destinations.

contracted vessel Stena Foreteller sails weekly on the route Turku–Bremerhaven–Harwich– Cuxhaven–Paldiski–Turku. The ship departs from Turku on Fridays and arrives in Bremerhaven on Sundays.

The Port offers a fast weekly connection to Bremerhaven which is Germany’s second biggest sea port and an important link to the transoceanic ports e.g. in Asia and South America. The feeder traffic between Turku and Bremerhaven is operated by Mann Lines whose

transoceanic lines Mann Lines also opened a fast sea route to the port of Rotterdam. In practice, the speed equals a direct route, but is at the same time cost-efficient and environmentally sound. Based in Kaarina, Vema Lift Oy uses Mann Lines’ scheduled traffic in the exports of its products. Part of Kiitokori Group, the company designs, manufactures and markets hydraulic aerial platforms primarily for the fire-fighting and rescue services. More than 90% of Vema Lift’s production is exported to destinations

including, for instance, China, Russia, India, Vietnam, Jordan, Columbia, and Turkmenistan. The scheduled traffic operated by Mann Lines fulfils Vema Lift’s logistics needs, and the services are flexible. A sea connection is available via Bremerhaven even to distant export destinations, and the weekly departures make it easier to schedule the shipments and arrange further connections.

INFORMATION Fast and uncongested connections are an important part of the overall service of the Port of Turku. The road connections in particular have developed rapidly in recent years, as the key routes to the Port have been improved and modernised with funding from the state and the EU. In addition to smoother flow of traffic, the goals include improving safety and reducing the cost of transports and emissions caused by traffic. The most recent project is the renovation of Highway 8 that started in 2014. During phase one, the road between Raisio, Masku and Nousiainen will be converted into motorway. The motorway section is expected to be completed by the end of 2016. Traffic from the Port is directed to Highway 8 along the widened 4-lane Suikkilantie road which also provides heavy vehicles with access to other Finnish trunk roads via Turku bypass road. The completion of the E18 motorway from Turku to Helsinki metropolitan area has generated definite advantages for cargo transports

as well as other road users. The motorway forms a key part of the Scandinavian - Mediterranean corridor which is included in the European Unionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s TEN-T core network and continues from Turku via Helsinki all the way to the Russian border. The safety, smooth flow and ecological aspects of the traffic on E18 are of top quality thanks to advanced technology. Modern telematics solutions provide changing traffic guidance as well as various traffic information, restrictions and warnings to drivers through signs using LED technology. The construction of the last stretch of the E18 motorway in Finland from Hamina to Vaalimaa commenced in June 2015. The waiting area for heavy vehicles in Vaalimaa will be taken into use in spring 2017, and the motorway will be opened for traffic in spring 2018. After the completion of the road the Port of Turku can offer a competitive route for traffic between Northern Europe and Russia.

Comprehensive warehousing Warehousing and terminal services form an important part of the service concept of the Port of Turku. One of the players tightly committed to the Port is DB Schenker, a leading company in the logistics branch. Turku acts as a gateway for DB Schenkerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s transports between Scandinavia and Finland, so the Port of Turku is also an optimal location for warehousing. DB Schenker has over 60,000 square metres of warehouse space in Turku, of which around 48,000 square metres have been built during the past ten years. The modern logistics

centres are located in the immediate vicinity of the Port in the Ovako area and Pansio. The latest investment is a 7,000 square metre hall completed in Pansio in late 2015. In warehousing DB Schenker offers a full range of services for both short and long-term storage needs. The extent of the services varies according to the customersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; needs from overall logistics solutions to short-term warehousing orders. The main focus lies in industry and consumer products logistics. The warehouses handle,

services are increasing for example, household appliances, tyres and oil products, as well as classified products. There is space available to meet the needs of the products, ranging from cold storage to temperature-regulated and humidity-regulated conditions. DB Schenkerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s range of services also includes a wide variety of added value services, such

as labelling, re-packing, compiling of assortments, and different services to facilitate the retail trade. For example, the services for white goods, or household appliances, include transport, installation and the removal of the old appliance. The customer makes the purchase in a shop or online, and the seller informs DB Schenkerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s warehouse which then completes the order reliably.

Towards cleaner The goal of the Sulphur Directive that entered into force in the Baltic Sea region at the beginning of 2015 is to improve the air quality and the state of the marine environment in the region as well as reducing the health hazards caused to people by the sulphur oxides. The impacts of the Directive will be assessed in 2020, but already now the dispersion models prepared for the Port of Turku by the Finnish Meteorological Institute suggest that the yearly average of the sulphur dioxide content caused

by vessel traffic emissions will decrease considerably. In the Turku region, the emissions are expected to decrease by around 80% from 2007â&#x20AC;&#x201C;2016.* The maximum permitted sulphur content of fuel in vessels sailing in the Baltic Sea is now 0.1 per cent while previously it was 1 per cent. Reaching that level requires either switching to fuel with lower sulphur content, installing scrubbers in the vessels or using alternative fuels, such as LNG.

seafaring The technology brought on by the new regulations presents new challenges to ports, too. Of the vessels that operate regularly in the Port of Turku, M/S Viking Grace uses LNG as fuel and Meyerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Turku shipyard has just started the construction of the second LNG-driven passenger ship for the Baltic Sea. In anticipation of more common use of LNG, the Port of Turku and its partners are prepared to initiate the building of an LNG terminal in Pansio very quickly if the demand increases.

The reception of waste water in the Port of Turku is being developed further. Two new waste water reception points are in planning for passenger as well as ro-ro ships visiting the Port. to enjoy the archipelago The Port of Turku has further strengthened its position as the main harbour for passenger traffic between Finland and Sweden. The route through the archipelago from Turku to Stockholm continues to attract people and the number of passengers has increased even at economically unstable times. The service supply on the route has been increased a great deal by both ports and the shipping companies operating the route, and the work continues. The new vessels of both Viking Line and Tallink Silja have also made the traffic environmentally sounder. The Port of Turku is the only passenger harbour in Finland with its own railway station. It allows the passengers to arrive by train right next to the quays. Travelling is safe in any weather, and it is quick and easy to transfer with luggage from the train to the terminal.

Rail and Ship trains arrive in Turku from both Helsinki and Tampere, and the schedules have been arranged to fit those of the ferries. There is also a rail connection to St. Petersburg via the Port; the passengers then need to change for Allegro high-speed train in Helsinki. Bus traffic in the Port of Turku is also lively. Bus stops for long-distance coaches and local buses as well as different tour operatorsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; charter coaches can be found in the immediate vicinity of the passenger terminal. There are over 900 parking spots for those coming in their own car. The parking fee can be paid with coins, card or mobile app. Terminals and traffic arrangements also aim at smooth flow of passenger traffic, which makes moving in the port safe and easy. Thanks to good arrangements and efficient terminal services, departing and arrival is fast and carefree.

CARGO PORT OPEN The Cargo Port Open event was arranged on Turku Day on 20 September. Visitors could see how a modern cargo port operates by taking part in guided coach tours. Also, representatives from companies operating in the port area were present in a marquee, as well as some port working machines.
