olunteers and staff at Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice will be travelling around the area in style after taking delivery of a Kangoo Van from Renault Enfield.
The van has been branded and kitted out for Noah’s Ark with the monthly lease being paid for by an anonymous supporter of the childrens charity. The insurance costs being covered by local business, Integrated Pest Management Ltd (IPM). The charity will now use the vibrant red van for both M N its fundraising and family N Noah’s P day activities. Ark currently provides practical and emotional support to 90 life-limited children and their families living in the communities of Enfield and North London. It runs a busy programme of events to raise the money its needs to maintain and build its outreach service. The generous donation will prove to be invaluable for transporting fundraising material, play equipment, leaflets and other items. nfield’s electoral services team is reminding all residents aged over 18 that the deadline for registering to vote in the local elections is Tuesday 20th April 2010. The local council election takes place on Thursday 6th May, but people will not be able to vote if they are not on Enfield’s electoral register or they forgot to apply for a postal or proxy vote by the deadline. Elections manager, Peter Stanyon, said, “If people know that they will want a postal vote in these elections they must submit their completed application before 5pm on Tuesday 20th April.”

The 60 plus day centre at The Wyllyotts Centre in Darkes Lane will be able to purchase new kitchen equipment thanks to Councillor Peter Knell who allocated just over half of his £2,000 budget. He said: “The club provides a daily lunch for older people. This money will help replace a lot of their equipment. The centre not only provides older people with a meal at lunchtime but also a place to meet and socialise.” St Mary’s Church has benefited from a refurbished kitchen courtesy of Councillor John Donne who gave £1,000 from his allocation of money. He said: “The money has helped pay for a new wash room, kitchenette and storage cupboards in the church hall which is used by the church and also for community
gatherings.” Potters Bar Flower Club has also benefited by getting a new portable sound system for their monthly entertainment sessions. Councillor Ron Morris allocated just over £150 from his fund and said: “Many older people are members of the club and go along to the monthly sessions to socialise with other people.” Each Hertsmere borough councillor has £2,000 to spend on projects in their area but the money is running out so if you have any ideas on how the last of it can be spent, contact your local councillor now! Enfield Celebrates with a Cup of Tea
A
s part of a year long celebration of one hundred years of ‘Girl Guiding’, the Enfield Division held a Trefoil Tea Party to thank members of both local Trefoil Guilds and Ambassadors. The Trefoil Guild is a national organisation of over 20,000 members mostly made up of women who have been, and still are, connected with Guiding. Enfield is very fortunate to have two excellent and active Trefoil Guilds. In addition to their own programme of activities members are always willing to offer help whether its to individual units or at bigger events. They teach guides crafts and other skills as well as talking to girls about their days as guides. At many events Trefoil members are called on to help make the tea, so it was agreed that they should have a tea party where others would make the tea, serve them and do the washing up afterwards. Enfield also has a number of Ambassadors who promote
Girl Guiding locally and this was a special opportunity to thank them. Around 30 senior members were invited and after judging the decorated cake and biscuit competition, they were served sandwiches, cakes and tea. Over 100 Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers prepared and served tea and entertained guests with singing, dancing, poems and plays. County President and Trefoil Guild member, Doreen Hudson, said it was “Such a happy event, lots of old and new friends to chat to, good food, lots of cups of tea and delightful waitresses” Cllr Anne Marie Pearce, exBrownie and Ambassador for the Girlguides, also thanked members for the afternoon and congratulated the girls on their performances. fter qualifying in the European regional heats The Hertfordshire Showband, based in Potters Bar competed in the ‘World Showband Championships’ and were placed thirteenth. The 60 strong band performed a 12 minute arena marching display, whilst playing their award winning music, which is primarily
West End show music. songs included ‘Theme for Jesus Christ Superstar’, ‘And All that Jazz’ from Chicago, ‘Can you feel the Love Tonight’ from The Lion King, ‘Summertime’ from Porgy and Bess, plus a stunning opening using the powerful Sing, Sing, Sing swing classic. They were competing against bands from North and South America, the Far East and
Training Band Europe. Hertfordshire Showband also perform in concerts and have appeared recently at many exciting events including playing at Brands Hatch just after Lewis Hamilton had performed demonstration laps, the Regent Street Festival, the NFL game at Wembley Stadium and in the Lord Mayor’s Show in London. The band is open to all (with a prime age group between 12 to 40) and they are looking now for people to join! In the coming four years the band anticipates possible involvement in the build up to

othering Sunday is held on the fourth Sunday of Lent and dates back to the 16th Century, when the Church required people to return to their Mother Church or Cathedral for that day’s mass. Subsequently this day became known as Mothering Sunday, not through association with mothers, but because of the journey made to the Mother Church. However, this was during an era when children as young as ten left home to take up work or apprenticeships elsewhere. For many of these children it was the only day in the whole year when they

Sisters Are Doing It for Themselves I
recently visited the newly opened hair and beauty salon, Mode on Lancaster Road in Enfield. I was greeted by delightful owners and sisters Sevy and Rebecca Modestou and I received something that I almost forgot existed - good old fashioned ‘Customer Service’. I had wrongly come to accept that it was something I would have to pay extra for, but this is clearly not the ethos of Mode. The hairdressing and beauty duo prove they are a cut above the rest as they greet their clients with smiles and beverages. While they explain that anyone can treat someone for the first time, its making them feel happy and satisfied with the quality of service so they return again and again. Mode concentrates on all aspects of beauty, hairdressing and design. They are constantly updating their styles to keep up with current fashions, and whilst the girls give me an extensive list of treatments they offer, I can’t help noticing how happy
their clients are, but most importantly how passionate these two sisters are about their business and clients. Mode stands out from the crowd, because the owners care about the people walking through their door. They are happy to adapt or combine treatments to suit your personal needs…after all you are the customer! Both sisters impress upon me how much time they spend researching and testing all of their products so that they complement your skin and hair, but if you have a particular product that you just can’t live without they will do their best to locate or use that product. Mode offers an array of treatments that include treatments for scarring, pigmentations, cellulite and tanning to complete bridal packages. The bridal hair and makeup packages start from £95 and include the trial; as a soon to be bride this is by far the cheapest price I’ve come
across and no you’re not compromising on quality. Prices are very reasonable because Sevy and Rebecca are once again thinking about their customers. A visit to Mode is not going to break the bank, but it is going to make you feel happier, as I discovered first hand when I was offered a complementary treatment. Sevy gave me a mixture of their Oxygen and Dermalogica facial, which left my skin feeling smooth and silky. My skin is extremely sensitive and I’ve rarely had a facial that hasn’t brought me out in a rash. However, this did not seem to phase Sevy who calmly talked though my past problems, current skin regime and lifestyle.
As I left the tranquillity of the treatment room there was still one surprise left in store. Celebrating 100 Years of Rail Connections O
n the 4th April 1910 The Great Northern Railway extension from Grange Park to Cuffley saw the first train arrive into Cuffley and Goffs Oak station. Between 1871 and 1910 the railway line (nowadays known as The Hertford Loop) terminated at Windmill Hill in Enfield, a short distance from the station we now know as Enfield Chase. When the line was extended to Cuffley and Goffs Oak (changed to Cuffley on 18th March 1971) new stations were also opened at Grange Park, Enfield Chase, Gordon Hill and Crews Hill. Whilst there was little demand for services to and from Cuffley in the years following the opening, the station was certainly put on the map with huge crowds travelling from London to see the remains of the German Airship shot down on 3rd September

More famously Cuffley and the Hertford Loop was the location of the 1912 film ‘The Flying Scotsman’ and the 1966 advert for Castrol Oil, also featuring the locomotive the ‘Flying Scotman’. In August 1912 construction work started on a single line from Cuffley via Hertford to Langley Junction (with connection to the main line south of Stevenage). However, when the 1st World War began it meant the work ceased abruptly, but it was later resumed in 1917 and the line was successfully opened for goods traffic on 4th March 1918. In December 1920 double tracking of the line was achieved and passenger services opened on 2nd June 1924 with stations at Bayford, Hertford North, Stapleford and Watton-at-Stone. The extension of the Great Northern Railway line
from Grange Park to Cuffley is the subject of The Cuffley Industrial Heritage Society at their monthly meeting on Tuesday 13th April in Northaw Village Hall at 8pm. To commemorate this historical industrial event, an exhibition will be held in Cuffley Library from 6th to 21st April. The exhibition will be opened at 11am by Marjorie
unveiled in Cuffley Station booking office. After the Exhibition ends in Cuffley Library, an enlarged display to include details of Stations in the Enfield area will be transferred to Forty Hall. The exhibition entitled ‘Making Tracks’ runs from 28th April to 20th June and will be open Wednesdays to Sundays 11am – 4pm.

The ModCell BaleHaus system consists of prefabricated panels made of a structural timber frame infilled with straw bales or hemp and rendered with a breathable limebased system. It is the creation of White Design in Bristol and Integral Structural Design in Bath, and was used last year by Channel 4’s Grand Design’s presenter Kevin McCloud, to build an eco-friendly house in six days for the Grand Designs Live exhibition. Researchers are hoping this will lead to
these renewable materials being used more widely in the building industry for housing in the UK. Craig White, Director of ModCell, said: “It is unacceptable that 27 per cent of CO2 emissions currently come from the energy we use in our homes, it is just as unacceptable to continue to emit CO2 through the energy we use to make them. If we are completely serious about being “carbon free” we need to rethink the design of our buildings on a large scale. What to do in your garden this spring I
am writing this in late February, and we’ve finally had a few sunny days after what has been a rather long and cold winter. Despite the cold there is a great display of winter colour in the gardens at Capel, and the Winter Bed in particular has a great display of Witch Hazels, winter-flowering heathers, and winter aconites. If you potted some bulbs up in the autumn, you should have enjoyed your reticulated irises by now and it won’t be long before the crocuses and daffodils appear. It’s worth planning ahead now for some summer colour. If you like dahlias (and they are great for colour from June until the first frosts) now is the time to chose the varieties you’d like to grow this year: they are not hardy so need to be grown somewhere frost-free until midMay when they can be planted out in your garden. On to some jobs to do in your garden over the next couple of months. After the cold weather you need to check your plants to see what has survived the winter and what hasn’t, and remove what has died. Do remember the old trick of scraping the bark back to check for live green cambium tissue or its absence. There is still time to lift and divide overgrown clumps of perennials, and don’t forget to protect the tender new shoots from slug damage (we use Ferramol-based slug pellets which are organically approved and wildlife safe - unless you are a slug). It’s a good time to plant new perennials to fill the gaps in your garden as there will be time for the roots to settle in before the drier weather. We are re-introducing hardy chrysanthemums to Capel this year to extend the flowering season right up until Christmas. These give a fantastic display and a good range will be for sale in Capel’s Plant Sales area, including
“Capel Manor” which was discovered in the gardens here and has lovely softyellow flowers. Despite the cold weather many weeds seem to have kept growing so it is a good idea to tackle them now before they get out of hand: once you’ve cleared them why not try putting a mulch 5 to 10cm deep over your beds (keeping it away 5cm from the stems of your plants) to give them a feed as well as helping to keep the areas weed-free. It will also help keep moisture in the soil over the summer. At Capel Manor we use recycled green waste from EcoPark which works really well for us. Other well-rotted organic manures are available! Containers also need top dressing with fresh compost to restore the nutrient levels, and it is good to incorporate some controlled-release fertiliser too, which should feed the plants until the autumn. Hungry shrubs and roses can be fed now, as well as fruit trees and bushes: the traditional feeds such as Fish, Blood and Bone or pelleted chicken manure work well as they keep feeding the plant throughout the year. It is also time to
think about feeding your lawn with a spring top-dressing to get it to green up, and once we get into April any bare patches can be either repaired with turf or sown with grass seed. Your lawn will need its first cut in March: keep the cut height on the high side until it is growing more vigorously. It is best to do this on a dry day and remember to keep off the grass when it’s frosty to avoid damaging it. Onto the kitchen garden! There is still time to get some seed potatoes for growing in containers or on your allotment or garden. They do take up a lot of space so I tend to grow mostly

Gardening first and second earlies (these are types of potato) as they work best for organic growing as they aren’t in the soil for as long so avoid pests and diseases better. However a good bet for a main crop if you insist on growing them is any of the Sarpo group of potatoes which have good blight resistance (blight has been a real problem for most of us in recent years). We normally plant ours out in mid-March after chitting them (this is term used to encourage the growth of the shoots on seed potatoes before planting and involves placing the seed potatoes in a shallow tray or egg carton with the thicker end uppermost in a well lit, dry, frost-free position. It can take 46 weeks for the shoots to grow and be ready to plant out). Remember to protect the new shoots once they are in the ground by earthing them up regularly and covering them with a double layer of horticultural fleece.

H
ave you ever wanted to capture a view, a portrait or a moment in time for posterity? For the beginner it can be confusing. There are so many digital cameras out there, how do you choose the right one for you? Ask yourself - what is your budget and what do you want from your camera? Do you want a small pocket sized camera just to take “photos” or do you want to take up photography as a hobby and have a camera that gives you more control? Here is a brief overview and some tips on how to compose a shot using the light to your advantage and how to get the best prints. The three main categories of digital cameras are: •The compact pocket-sized camera with pre-set automatic settings. •The advanced amateur or bridge camera, usually for the more serious amateur, has auto and manual settings and in some models additional changeable lenses. •The professional camera, the SLR, which has manual settings and changeable lenses. Once you decide on a camera the accompanying manual will show you how to set the date, time, language, sleep mode and other settings. The compact and bridge cameras will have the facility for finer tuning in the Menu. If your memory card is large enough it is probably best to set Image Quality on a high setting - the higher the number of pixels, the better quality your printed photos will be. So if you are taking your camera on holiday hoping to capture some awe inspiring photo’s it is probably
worth investing in a decent size memory card. Normally, digital cameras will allow you to shoot in JPEG format which produces good quality images, whilst compressing them. However, some cameras also have a choice of RAW and TIFF formats, which produce very high quality, uncompressed images but these take up much more memory than a JPEG and tend to be used by professional photographers. If you are allowed a choice choose the JPEG format. This will save you fiddling around with photo editing programmes when you come to printing your masterpieces. Most digital cameras will have an in-built flash which will automatically flash or alert you when the lighting is too dim. Some cameras have a digital zoom, which zoom in further than the optical zoom, but you should be very careful when using this function as your image will not be as sharp as a shot taken with an optical zoom. If you’re not careful you could end up with a lot of fuzzy faces!
Sport and Indoor. There may even be a Guide mode, which is a very quick and useful tool. It scrolls through various shooting problems and suggested solutions, such as brightening the subject and reducing blur or red-eye. A camera captures an image during exposure. This is achieved by allowing light in through the aperture (lens opening) and the shutter speed. Apertures can be confusing because they are measured as f-stops, for example f-2 is a large aperture and f-8 is a small one. A large aperture that allows more light in will usually be combined with a faster shutter speed, which restricts the length of time the light is allowed in through the lens opening. A small aperture allowing less light in is usually combined with a slower shutter speed, allowing the light to enter the lens for longer time.
Don’t be put off by Dial Settings The camera dial may have various settings for easy access. Auto and Program P can be used for all shots. When your camera is in Auto mode, all settings are pre-set and cannot be overridden manually. Whilst modes P, (Digital Image Stabilisation, sometimes called anti-shake) DIS, Portrait, Landscape and Scene also have pre-set functions, some, such as white balance, zoom and panorama, may be overridden manually. The Scene mode scrolls through several more auto-settings such as

Make sure you read your manual so you can set up your camera correctly. 3. A good place to build your confidence and knowledge is through a local camera club. There are several local clubs in the area; a simple internet search will give you details of your closest meeting. 4. Digital cameras make people lazy, take your time and get the best shot first time round. Ask yourself what you want to achieve from the shot. 5. When using a bridge camera, besides the auto-settings there may be extra ones which allow you more control over the aperture and shutter speed, such as My Mode, Manual, Shutter priority and Aperture Priority. Shutter priority allows you to choose a shutter speed whilst automatically setting the aperture size for that speed. This would tend to be used when trying to capture something in motion. A short shutter-speed will freeze an action shot sharply, whereas a longer shutter-speed is more likely to blur the moving subject and convey a sense of motion. Aperture priority allows you to choose the aperture size, but the shutter speed is then set automatically. A small aperture would be used for a landscape shot where the focus on both the foreground and background will be sharp. However, a larger aperture would be used for a portrait shot so that your subject’s face is sharp, but the background is blurred. In Manual mode you have full control and can set both aperture and shutter speed. The setting My Mode saves your own favourite customised settings, saving time and effort. The beauty of digital photography is that after the initial outlay any further expense is negligible. Take full advantage of your digital camera by using the visual screen on your camera to view your
image before you take your picture, after all this is what will appear in your photo. Keep the camera as steady as possible by resting it on a wall or tripod and focus your subject within the brackets. This is particularly important when taking Macro and night-time shots. Macro shots are taken using large apertures with the camera held close to the subject, sometimes in awkward positions which may cause your hands to shake. Night-time shots usually require a longer exposure time otherwise the image will become dark with dots of light. To increase the exposure time a slower shutter speed is used, the camera must be kept still during this period otherwise the image will become blurred. There are three important things to consider when taking photographs; composition, lighting and the rule of thirds. Composition and lighting are very important when producing photos and should never be under estimated. If you have good natural light your image will be clear and crisp. Using the rule of thirds helps produce nicely balanced, easy on the eye pictures. The rule of thirds is where you mentally divide the shot into thirds both horizontally and vertically, and place your subject where any of the lines intersect. Also, as you have to position things relative to the edges of
the frame it helps get rid of tiny subjects surrounded by vast empty space.

When you’re in landscape mode, keeping both the foreground and background sharp, focus on a point of interest - perhaps a barn or a boat as this will keep the eye from searching aimlessly for a focal point. Another useful tip for Landscape shots is to use the natural line of the landscape, river, or wall, to lead the eye into the distance. Frame landscape or even portrait shots with overhanging trees or through a window or doorway. Early morning and evening light create the best landscape shots.

When taking photographs in portrait mode zoom in on your subject and make it as large as possible against the background. It is best to take portrait shots with your subject in the shade, in diffused or side lighting. Harsh direct light can create shadows around the eyes or even make the subject look washed out. Once you have a collection of photographs that you want to display you can either take your memory card into a photo processing shop or upload your pictures to one of the many online photo services that will print your pictures for you. Alternatively if you have one of the many photo editing software packages available, you can edit your images removing any blemishes, adjust
