Christmas safety tips Christmas can be a time to rest and relax but remember, criminals are still at work! It can be a particularly busy time of year for burglars, so please don’t let them enjoy Christmas at your expense. Councillor John Donne, Community Safety Portfolio Holder at Hertsmere Borough Council, said: “Don’t forget everyday crime prevention measures just because it’s Christmas. Traditionally more crime can take place during this period so please continue to be vigilant.” A few simple measures can help keep your vehicle, home and property safe and prevent you from being a victim of crime. These include: • When the shops are crowded, the pickpocket or ‘dipper’ will have more chance to steal from

you. Make sure you stay alert and be extra careful with your wallet or purse and don’t carry too much cash. The same applies to travelling on crowded buses and trains. • If you travel by car, make sure you park in a well- lit area, lock all doors and windows and do not leave presents in view. • Once you have got your presents home, don’t make it easy for someone to steal from your home. Keep them out of sight and if you 'hide' or store larger items such as bicycles in the shed or outbuildings, make sure they are secure. Take the frame numbers of new cycles and the serial numbers of new electrical equipment just in case. Remember, empty boxes left outside advertise that you have new goods inside, so dispose of packing carefully.

• If you go out for the evening make it look like your home is occupied by turning on lights and the radio. Be extra careful about locking doors and windows. As a fire precaution, don't leave Christmas lights on in the house whilst you are out. •If you go away for the holiday period – consider using a timer switch for lights and ask a trusted neighbour to watch your home. Don't forget to cancel newspapers and milk if you have them delivered and either redirect your mail through the Post Office or have your neighbour take mail into the house - unopened Christmas cards and mail are a sure sign that a house is empty. In addition, during the festivities don’t be encouraged to do

anything you wouldn’t normally do, such as drink-driving. Book a cab instead but make sure it is licensed. You can do this by checking the driver’s licence details, which should be on show either on a plate attached to the rear bumper or in a special disc on their windscreen and rear window. Most cab drivers should also normally wear a badge showing their licence number. Cllr Donne added: “If you hail a cab in the street, ensure it is properly licensed or pre-book one from a reputable company.” Further crime prevention tips and other useful community safety information is available online at www.hertsmere.gov. uk/csp or call 020 8207 7801.

“I have always lived in Enfield and it seamed the right location to open my first shop.” Simon told EN Magazine. “Bubble bliss is all about offering something different for people who enjoying relaxing in the bathroom.” “Before opening the shop I spent a lot of time researching the products that I wanted to offer to customers. The products had to be top quality but I also wanted to make sure that they are not tested on animals, they are environmentally friendly, and above all, are fantastic products and good value for money.” “I have chosen to stock two main ranges of products, Baylis & Harding

With this in mind I am also stocking the leading brand in fake tans Fake Bake.” “But Bubble bliss is not just aimed at women. We also stock a range of products specifically

Extra Cash For Businesses Do you own a business in Potters Bar? If so do you fancy earning some extra cash this Christmas? All you need to do is join Hertsmere Borough Council’s Community Toilet Scheme and allow members of the public to use your loos, without having to buy anything and in return you could get up to £1,000. The council is looking for shops, cafes, pubs and other premises to come forward and apply to the scheme that aims to provide an alternative to traditional public and automated toilets. These are often costly to maintain and manage. Businesses will need to be located in High Street and Darkes Lane in Potters Bar. The amount of money you get will be between £600 and £1,000 a year depending on what facilities you can offer. For instance, businesses with only one unisex toilet will get £600, while those with separate male and female toilets, disabled toilets and baby changing facilities will get the full £1,000.

Participants will be selected by the council depending on their facilities, location and opening hours. If successful, initially you will be signed up to a threemonth trial that would then be extended to a year if both parties are happy to continue. Councillor Jean Heywood, Portfolio Holder for Environment, said: “I hope businesses will jump at the chance to earn some extra money in the current financial climate. It is a great scheme and a win-win situation for both shoppers and shopkeepers. Shoppers will have clean and safe convenient facilities to use and shopkeepers will get an annual fee as well as increased footfall which can boost sales.” Participating businesses will be identified by special window stickers and in time, a map will be produced to show their locations. Toilets will be inspected regularly to ensure they are of a good standard. For more information and to apply, call 020 8207 7435, email environmental.health@ hertsmere.gov.uk or visit www. hertsmere.gov.uk/cts

Community Help Points

Mostons Dec.indd 1

Launched in January 2008, the Community Help Points (CHPs) scheme provides safe havens for young people who feel threatened or need help in any way. The unique scheme involves a number of locations including businesses, police stations, shops and libraries that help children and young people who may have a momentary fear while travelling in and around Enfield. A resent drive to encourage more businesses to take part in the CHPs Scheme proved a success, with 70 more businesses expressing their interest at joining the 40 companies already involved. Led by Sergeant Neil Standring of the Youth & Partnership Team, a number of partners joined together in to explain the scheme to local business and organisations to encourage more to join and help support our young people. Sergeant Neil Standring, said,“I am grateful to all partners

who took part in the drive to encourage more premises to join our scheme. There is a very real commitment by all to make a difference.” Staff working at businesses in the CHPs scheme, have received full training, and checks have also been made with the Criminal Records Bureau to ensure that they are responsible people who can be trusted. Representatives attending the resent drive were from Enfield Police, Volunteer Police Cadets, Chace Community School ,Youth Engagement Panel, LBE Parent support Service, Enfield Children Young Persons Service, LBE - Children’s Trust Commissioning.

Waste and recycling collections in Potters Bar Kerbside waste and recycling collections in Potters Bar will change over the Christmas holiday period, and also next year due to the volume of items now being collected in brown bins. The roll out of bins for collecting glass, cartons, plastics and cans started in Potters Bar in October and has gone well with residents recycling lots more of their waste. Recent figures have shown a recycling rate of around 50% up from 40% a few months ago. Councillor Jean Heywood,

Environment Portfolio Holder, said: “We are recycling more than ever before, which is absolutely fantastic! We have been overwhelmed by the positive response from residents who have really embraced the new scheme, so a big thank you goes to them.”

Cllr Heywood explained: “Currently the new brown bins are being picked up on the same week as black bins. These two bins are the biggest loads so we need to collect them on different weeks to balance out our resources and keep the service cost-effective.”

Because so much more is being recycled in the brown bins, the council needs to swap the week it is collected. This means that from January, black bins and blue boxes will be picked up in Week 1 and green bins and brown bins/black boxes will be picked up in Week 2.

The main change during the Christmas period is that the council can only pick up black bins in the week between Christmas and New Year because of the way the bank holidays fall. So please hang on to your recycling until your next scheduled collection or

take it to a local recycling bank or the Household Waste Recycling Centre at Cranborne Road, Potters Bar. It is open every day except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. In the New Years you can recycle your real Christmas tree. Get it shredded for free at Oakmere car park in Potters Bar on Thursday 6th January between 11am and 2pm. For more information please visit www.hertsmere.gov.uk or call 020 8207 7480.

TV Buyers

Buying A TV Has Never Been So Confusing! Going to buy a TV used to be a simple decision of choosing the size of the TV screen that would fit into your home and the manufactures design. But that has all changed.

the edge

Today walk into a shop to purchase a new television and you are bombarded with decisions to make. Analogue, Plasma, LED, or LCD? Digital, HD or 3D? The options and permutations are endless and that’s before you consider the size of the screen. You can now choose up to 60inch screens. Pictures are becoming sharper than ever, the audio will have you checking behind the sofa to find the source of the voices and th ere are more channels than you can shake a remote at.

in terms of contrast and overall picture quality at these sizes, and are often cheaper than an equally-sized LCD counterpart. LED televisions are generally more expensive, being newer technology, than LCD however the colours are sharper and more realistic vs an LCD TV.

There’s more to buying a television than simply being stunned into submission by sleek and stylish looks. You’ll also need to consider the size of your budget, the look you want, whether you need LCD, LED or plasma, the size of your viewing room in relation to the television and the distance you’ll be sitting from your TV.

High Definition TV – HDTV but what’s high definition? HD, or HDT, means clear, sharp television pictures. So how do you get it? Well, you’ll need an HD-ready television. These are TV’s with resolution high enough to cope with HD. You’ll also need a set-top box and to subscribe to a broadcaster offering HD programmes.

But what are the benefits and differences of TV’s? Simplifying the technology; Plasma TVs use a sheet of miniscule individual plasma cells that creates picture when an electrical charge is applied whereas LCD televisions use liquid crystal compressed between two glass plates; an image is created when electricity is applied to these crystals. LED TVs which is an extension of LCD TVs uses the liquid crystals but unlike LCD TVs they use backlight made of hundred of LEDs and not a fluorescent lamp.

But what about the newest development, 3D TV?

So which one to chosse – the best way to do this is firstly decide on the size of the TV you want and your budget For screen sizes below 42in, LCD screens are probably your best choice. If you are considering a large screen , 42in and above plasma technology could be the better option. Plasma panels do have

Many people will have remember early 3D movies, wearing flimsy coloured lenses and poor picture quality. Although you still need to wear glasses the picture quality is now out of this world. I went along to the Sony Centre in Enfield to try out the 3D TV and was totally blown away by the picture. To receive 3D TV you will need to sign up to a broadcaster that offers this. But you can already buy lots of films that have been made in 3D and also now even video games are being produced in 3D. Nathan at the Sony Centre explained, “we have had a lot of interest in 3D TV. Customers do not realise that buying a 3D TV means you are getting a

sync transmitter. The result is a real sense of depth which can be seen from a wide viewing angle without the flickering you get from some other types of 3D glasses.”

state of the art television that can be watched in 2D with fantastic picture quality but has the option to offer more, 3D. You do still need to wear glasses to watch 3D TV. The Sony glasses have liquid crystal lenses that receive a signal from the TV via the 3D

“I would highly recommend connecting a 3D Blu-ray Disc™ this allows you to play the latest 3D movies in the highest quality and enjoy superb pictures for both 3D and 2D viewing,” added Nathan. “Also you might not realise that audio is a crucial part of the full 3D experience. To really enhance the viewing and sound experience consider adding a home cinema system made up of speakers, including a subwoofer for bass sound, and a receiver, which amplifies and reproduces digitally compressed sound in full detail.”

Do you remember all the mountains of discarded wrapping paper and tape last year after the presents had been opened? Often the paper is covered in sticky tape and glitter that makes it difficult to recycle. This Christmas once again I’m changing my wrapping habits and using only what I’ve got around the house to wrap up gifts. • Reuse what you’ve got; gift boxes; gift-wrap left over from last year; brown packaging paper. Try decorating using string, dried flowers, berries pine cones or cut up cards

copying the Japanese method of furoshiki, or wrapping gifts in fabric. There’s no paper waste as this technique encourages the reuse of fabric scraps and saves decorating with ribbons and tape. The only requirements are that the fabric be beautiful and that it be square. If the fabric is large enough it can also be reused as a bandana or scarf. Decorate your gifts with items like holy or pine cones to give a festive feel, which are easy to recycle. Why not have a go yourself and spread the word to family and friends. • Reuse pages from glossy style magazines for fashion conscious friends and financial pages for bean counters. • I love sewing and have bags of interesting bits of fabric. I’m

Keep Fit and Lose Weight

Keeping in shape this Christmas to reach by Christmas, one option could be to try a diet plan such as LighterLife Total or Lite. Through the use of nutritionally balanced soups, shakes and bars, clients are able to lose weight quickly and safely, and maintain their weight loss. Weekly, single-sex group meetings are the other key feature of LighterLife. Run by your local LighterLife WeightManagement Counsellor Heather Newham, they’re designed to help clients explore some of the reasons why they put on weight. Understanding why you overeat, learning new ways to think and behave, and leaving unhelpful habits and behaviours behind you, will all lead you to live lighter in the future.

Well, I have just been out to the shops, and everywhere was completely packed. There was a sort of panicky feel in the air, and lots of people walking around too fast carrying bulging bags and looking stressed. You know what that means? OH NO it’s that time of the year again; the time of endless shopping, darker nights, financial anxiety and the certain knowledge that you will have to eat mince pies and look cheerful whilst trying to stand still so that your tummy doesn’t relax over the top of your waist band. If you have a busy party season ahead, or are going to be seeing relatives and friends you may already be worrying about losing weight or making sure your looking good in your party outfit! Research shows that the average person gains between five and ten pounds between November and January. You may ask yourself ‘what hope do we have in reaching a healthier weight before Christmas and maintaining it over the festive season?’ The answer lies in starting your weight-loss journey now and setting goals and rewards that will spur you on to your main goal - your ideal weight, and a healthier life. If you have a weight-loss goal

EN Magazines top 10 things that you need to know about losing weight: 1. Skipping breakfast or other meals will make it more difficult to lose weight. If you miss meals, your body will view the drop in calories as scarcity of food. Your metabolism will slow to conserve calories, and food that you eat may be converted to fat for use when the famine has passed.

conditioning or circuit classes where you burn calories and develop muscle tone at the same time. 5. To lose weight you must use more calories than you consume. To lose approximately a pound of body fat a week you must cut around 500 calories each day from your diet. Because this could seriously stress your system (the famine response) it is sensible to burn an extra 250 calories through exercise each day. You must exercise for about an hour each day, and cut 250 calories from your diet, through making sensible food choices e.g. swap a 200 calorie bagel at lunch for two thick rice cakes (56 calories) saving 144 calories already! 6. Weight loss is defined by the outgoing calories exceeding the incoming calories each day/ week; it makes no difference what time of the day you eat.

There is no point in ‘not eating after 6’ which may make you so hungry that you binge at nine on whatever you can get your hands on. Most sensible is to eat 5 small healthy meals a day to encourage the metabolism to run efficiently. If an evening meal makes you feel uncomfortable, have a light salad or soup. 7. I am very sorry but you are not big-boned, and your weight is not your mothers’ fault. Different body types store fat in different areas, but the tall slim people really do eat better (or less) or are more active than their rounder cousins. If your family are all large, this is usually more to do with learnt eating and activity patterns. If you have been blaming your weight gain on your genetics, then stop, because you can lose weight too. Try not to look at the reasons why you can’t lose weight, and in stead focus on

2. Healthy weight loss is around a pound of body fat a week, if you lose much more, the chances are that you will put it back on as soon as you resume normal eating. 3. Rapid weight loss on the scales due to dieting may in fact be loss of water. More disturbingly, rapid weight loss may be due to loss of muscle. A reduced muscle mass will slow your metabolism, making it easier to put on weight. 4. You cannot ‘spot reduce;’ however many sit-ups you perform, the fat will not ‘melt’ or ‘burn’ from your tummy. To lose body fat you must burn calories through exercise which gets you out of breath, and by sensibly reducing calories. You can improve the appearance of certain areas by developing muscle tone beneath the skin. An ideal way to do this would be to regularly attend body

Keep Fit and Lose Weight small changes you can make to promote weight loss. 8. If you really can’t understand why you cannot lose weight, keep a food diary; you may surprise yourself at how much/ often you actually eat. 9. If you are concerned about your weight, keep it to yourself; children copy the behaviour of their parents. To give your children a better chance of avoiding eating disorders, practice healthy eating and activity as a good example to them, rather than talking about dieting and your dissatisfaction with your weight. 10. Want to lose half a stone in the next 5 minutes? Stand tall with the posture of a ballerina (lads, you can be a soldier if you would rather), draw the tummy into the back bone, feel as if you are being drawn up to the ceiling through the crown of your head, slightly roll the shoulders back and down and maintain this tall posture throughout the day. Good posture will make you look slimmer immediately. The icing on the cake is to think positive things about yourself; if you feel confident and attractive you will look confident and attractive. However looking good and staying healthy is not all about weight loss and at this time of year rushing around buying gifts, attending parties can take its toll on our energy levels. Dr Luigi Gratton - Vice President Education for Herbalife and nutrition coach to LA Galaxy says “A healthy, active lifestyle starts
