“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted”
Matthew 5:4
Rev Jackie
At my last parish, on the lectern was a notebook, it had two columns: one for those who were sick, and the other column was ‘Year’s Mind’. It was to be used by those reading the intercessions to pray for those who needed pray and to remember the anniversary of those who had died. During the pulpit swap, I came across something very similar. The Church of England is very good at having ‘big arguments’ about all sorts of things and ‘year’s mind’ has been included – and like most things of contention it originates from the split with Rome and the Reformation. Before the Reformation, ‘year’s mind’ would have included prayers for the dead and an anniversary mass and other rituals. The church up to the Reformation was clear that there was no end date on the need to keep the dead, by name and intention in our prayers. For me, ‘year’s mind’ is not about praying for souls but about remembering. The phrase originates from old English geargemynd… meaning year memory. The reference to mind means to remember. Year’s mind is when we remember those who have died and this is such an important part of grief, death, loving and living.
November is for us the month of remembrance. On Remembrance Sunday, we remember those who died, who sacrificed their lives for our peace. Often, we did not know them personally, but we do remember them, for some we are remembering our ancestors – my great grandfather died at Ypres in the first world war. As we remember the past wars, please could I ask you to think of the present wars still going on in our world and to pray for those who today will be alive but tomorrow will be no more. In November, we also have our ‘All Souls services of Thanksgiving and Remembering’, an opportunity to light a candle and to reflect. Do join us for a reflective time full of light and remembrance as we remember those we love but see no more. There is no end date to love, to cherished memories and to remembering. All Welcome.
With Love, Rev Jackie

A time of quiet reflection.
ALL WELCOME.
The September meeting was a fascinating one. The speaker was Stamford Bridge resident Malcolm Brooke who spoke about ‘Yorkshire’s vanishing coastline’. Illustrated with a top-quality PowerPoint presentation, his concentration was on the Holderness coast which extends 38 miles from Flamborough in the north to Spurn Point in the south.
This stretch of coastline is one of the fastest eroding in Europe at an average annual rate of around two metres. Approximately three miles of land have been lost since Roman times including the loss of many properties, roads and, indeed, whole settlements.
Expensive defences have, of course, endeavoured to arrest the cliff movement but, inevitably has had negative impacts elsewhere. The fundamental problem is that the cliffs are made of soft boulder clay which erodes when saturated. The prevailing winds are also a significant factor.
We were familiarised with the use of groynes, rock revetments, granite blocks, sloping of the cliff face all with varying results, and terminology such as longshore drift and slumping (downslope movement of the clay/gravel). A lively question and answer session followed; a good number of members having walked stretches of this appealing coastline.
The subjects for the next two meetings are ‘The twothousand-year history of York’ (30 October) and ‘The rise and fall of the Selby coalfield’ (27 November).
Have you thought about joining the Group? Probus is part of a global organisation with some forty clubs in Yorkshire alone. St Matthew’s Church Coffee Morning
Thank you to everyone who came to or helped out at the coffee morning on Saturday 28th September. It was a sunny but cool day outside, but a warm welcome was in store inside as we celebrated 25 years since the church was reopened. It was lovely to see people from Naburn and our surrounding villages dropping in. We didn’t sell everything by closing time at noon, so a table was put up outside Jean Dale’s house where the remaining produce was sold before nightfall. Overall, we had a really good time and raised £323.50 for church funds.
Everyone is very warmly invited to our services at St Matthew’s Church. Please note that there are some special services coming up. Please do come along and join us:
Remembrance Sunday – 10th November
Our Remembrance Sunday service will be held on 10th November at 10.30am, a bit later than our normal Sunday services. It will include wreath laying at the village war memorial in the churchyard and observing two minutes of silence.
Advent Sunday – 1st December
This will be a ‘United 8’ service of Holy Communion at 10.30am. All the churches in the Rivers Partnership will be joining together to give thanks to God for the 25th anniversary of the reopening of St Matthew’s Church in Naburn. Archbishop Stephen Cottrell will be joining us.
Every time we see a rainbow in the sky, we can remember that God loves us and will always look after us.
We were delighted to have welcomed Luke Charters MP (Outer York) to our open
evening and tour of Naburn Primary School. We had a lovely time showing off our new and improved premises and talking to new and familiar faces about our new, broad and exciting curriculum, enrichment offers and clubs, and the educational visits we have lined up! The children have been demonstrating our school values well by using the new areas sensibly and respectfully. It has been brilliant to see our children enjoying the climbing frame and library area so much.
“I love playing on this. Some of it is a bit tricky but I’m not giving up until I’ve conquered the monkey bars!” Year 4.
Our brand-new library was opened by Luke Charters MP for Outer York. Luke spent time getting to know us all at Naburn and is very supportive of our wonderful school and family ethos. He even got stuck in at boomwhacker club!
‘A privilege to be asked to officially open Naburn Primary School’s new library yesterday. They have a lovely community and village school ethos, with wonderful staff who are a true asset to the school.’
As we start a new half term in November, we also start new topics in our learning!
Acorn Class is a mixed EYFS/KS1 and this half-term their topic is ‘If I could turn back time’. During this, they will be learning about toys from the past and properties of the materials they are made from. We will continue learning about our value of Community and the importance of remembrance and also investigating the big question of ‘Why does Christmas matter to Christians?’
For Willow class and Sycamore Class, the topic in KS 2 is ‘It’ll be over by Christmas’. We are focussing on World War One and in particular the meaning and importance of remembering those who fall in war. We will continue to investigate our value of Community with big questions such as: Why are festivals important to religious communities? Is it better to express your beliefs in arts and architecture or in charity and generosity?
We held election hustings of the House Captains early in October. We had a whopping 13 children standing who all wrote and delivered their campaign speeches with confidence and clarity. Our new House Captains will attend a
summit meeting at South Hunsley to lead on a community project alongside other TEAL schools.
Working together with our school community, we are proud to have developed our own behaviour curriculum called the Naburn Way, to reflect our values of Aspiration, Respect and Community. We think these will help us to make the right choices and remind us that we can be the change we want to see.
We are thrilled to announce that we have been awarded the Music Mark Award in recognition of our commitment to providing a high-quality music education for all children and young people.
We are already busy learning new songs for the Young Voices Concert to be held in Sheffield at the Utilita Sheffield Arena on Friday 10th January. More information about this truly special event can be found on their website. We are very excited to be taking part!
Reflection Corner
"37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself."
22nd October - Harvest Festival at St Mathew’s Church at 2pm – all welcome! All food donations go to breakfast clubs and to the homeless charity, Arc Light. Thank you.
24th October – Year 5/6 pupil summit on the theme of ‘leadership and community’ at South Hunsley School. This is an exciting opportunity as part of Team TEAL, to come together to look at overcoming barriers to community leadership and the role of pupil leadership in school enrichment offers, as well as exploring different types of community outside of school, and the roles that schools can have in contributing, focusing on the concept of legacy.
12th November – STEM day – protecting our planet.
15th November – The Archbishop of York – Steven Cottrell will be visiting our school and having a lovely school lunch with us too!
7th December 2024 Christmas Bazaar, Santa will be dropping in!

This year is now in its last quarter and seems to be rushing along at high speed. The shops are already stocking Christmas cards, gifts and goods and it is not even half term at school yet!
November brings Remembrance Sunday when we remember those who died in the conflicts from the First World War to now, in particular the men of Kelfield and Stillingfleet who lost their lives in the two World Wars of the Twentieth Century.
Whilst that may seem a long time ago at Stillingfleet WI at the beginning of October we had an inspiring speaker, Roz Clark who reminded us,through a history of her father, of the intense suffering of that time. Her father served as an officer in the Royal Navy but was captured after the fall of Singapore and held a prisoner in a Japanese Prisoner of War Camp. Barely surviving that experience he went on to live the most remarkable life spending time as a missionary on an Island in the Pacific Ocean and later teaching youngsters from very troubled backgrounds in the UK to sail and build their lives anew. By giving of himself to those very different communities in turn their affection and gratitude repaired in him the cruel damage of those war years. It was incredibly moving and still flashes a warning in the current conflicts of the modern world. Lest we forget. At the end of the month on the 24th November this year comes the Sunday next before Advent, often known as “Stir Up Sunday” because of the prayer said at that service asking for us to be “stirred up in service to God with the fruits of such labour our reward”.
At some point in history, it became a tradition to prepare the Christmas Puddings on that date introducing somewhat different stirring and fruits! Many of us like to make our Christmas cakes at this time and my children when young always helped give the cake a stir and made a wish as I am sure many others did too.
Our Remembrance Service at Stillingfleet Church takes place at 10.30am on Sunday 10th November do join us as we remember that sacrifice as well as seeking peace for our own time.
Whilst it may seem a little early to mention our Christmas services this year at Stillingfleet Church, there will be the Carol and Crib Service on Sunday 22nd December at 4pm and a Holy Communion Service on Christmas Day at 9am.

Community Speed Watch have carried out more sessions on Cawood Road, in the 40 mph zone and we are happy to share the news that we are now authorised to carry out speed checks through the village. Following an ongoing dialogue with the North Yorks police traffic bureau, we now have two new approved Speedwatch sites:
1. On Church Hill – south towards the pub and north towards the church
2. On the B1222 – south towards the village hall and north towards Naburn
A big thanks to Councillor Foy for his persistence and determination with this!
So far, out of over 3000 vehicles checked, we have recorded 112 above the agreed speed limit. We send the details of anyone recorded to be speeding (35mph or more in a 30mph zone or 46mph or more in a 40mph zone) to North Yorkshire Police, who then follow this up with their own processes.
Community Speed Watch is about drawing drivers' attention to speed limits in areas where communities say it is affecting their quality of life. It also educates drivers about the effects that anti-social road use can have on local people. On behalf of the Parish Council, a special thanks to all of those involved with the initiative
The Charity Committee are in negotiations with a potential new tenant who has expressed interest in the Farm Business Tenancy (FBT) over the ByeLaw Field. The committee will share their recommendations with the full council when they have more information.
The annual safety inspection of the Play Area took place in October and a Play Area Committee meeting will be called to consider the findings of the inspection and any recommendations for action will be brought back to full council at its meeting in December.
Please note that several residents have raised concerns about dogs on the Play Area. Dogs are not allowed in the play area, guide dogs being the exception. We continue to manage and maintain The Green.
o Work to be carried out on the Chapel car park to better delineate the boundary edges. This will make it easier for residents and Art Studio users to use the parking spaces.
o The current parking scheme had helped ensure the car park was available when needed for weddings and funerals, etc.
o The existing parking notice needed to be re-sited to the opposite side of the road to increase visibility.
o The existing parking permit holders to be advised that the scheme is to be renewed under the existing terms for 12 months but that no new permit hangers will be issued.
o The existing parking permit holders to be advised that on a specified date/time they need to park elsewhere to allow access for the edge of the car park to be strimmed to better delineate the boundary.
o Thank you to the owner of the new Art Studio for sharing their projections re usage of the Chapel car park. The Council will keep its operation under review as the business matures.
A number of activities around our Village Infrastructure will soon be taking place.
o We will shortly be replacing the Parish Council & Village Institute noticeboard and are considering replacement of the free-standing public noticeboard by the bridge.
o The council has now received the payment from the sale of the telephone box, though it hasn’t been removed yet.
o The Network Access Agreement with Quickline Communications has been signed and accepted. The Parish Council have received an easement of £5,000 and Quickline have recently started their communication re the planned date for installation.
o The council have agreed to fund a remembrance wreath for the November ceremony and will be putting up "Tommy" signs to commemorate the event.
Resident’s concerns such as tree pruning, road visibility, and a possible footpath/cyclepath were discussed at the October Parish Council meeting, with various steps being taken to address them.
As we continue to improve how we engage and communicate with our community, the council has decided to change our current website to a gov.uk domain name and will change to stillingfleetparishcouncil.gov.uk. A gov.uk website address is more secure, professional, has better controls with improved legal protection.
A Community Emergency Resilience plan was discussed at the October meeting and a resident shared their experience of the Ready for Anything emergency volunteering scheme. One of our councillors also shared information of the actions taken by the Riccall Emergency Resilience Group. Our Council has decided to form a working party with a view to drafting a proposal for how Stillingfleet might develop an Emergency Response Plan to cope with any future severe flooding or wide-ranging electrical outage impacting the whole village.
If you are interested in getting involved with any of the initiatives, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. If you don’t have enough time to be actively involved, we still want to hear your views!
Minutes of all Council meetings are placed on the Parish Council website, Parish Council notice board and on our Community Chat page.
The next meeting of the Parish Council will take place in the Village Hall on Thursday 12th December 2024 at 7.00 pm.
Community Drop-in Session will start before this meeting at 6.30 pm and last 30 minutes.
In the meantime, we are looking forward to continuing to support our community! If there is anything you would like added to this Parish Council monthly update, please get in touch with us.

We had a lovely meeting in October. Although there were a few of our regular members absent, we had one visitor and two new sign ups.
Following our usual pattern of running through WI business first, our speaker for the evening was Ros who had never given a talk before, on the subject of her father, Commander Victor Clark. His experience during the war with the Royal Navy was fascinating and heroic, as was his later life sailing around the world in his yacht "Solace" and ending up in the Cook Islands in the Pacific. Ros was very entertaining and also shared her own experiences of following in her father's way, visiting the Cook Islands where she buried his ashes and following the call of God to spend time working alongside the islanders. Many of our members commented that this was one of the best talks we have ever had.
If any women in the village would like to come to one of our meetings, we are in the village hall from 7pm on the first Wed of the month. We are now busy putting together our planned speakers for 2025.

Former Abattoir site in the village: The owner of this site has eventually been granted permission to convert the land into a small housing development, this is a plan the Parish Council have supported. This will involve conversion of some existing brick buildings into four properties of two bedrooms each, the building of one new three-bedroom house and the building of three houses each with four bedrooms. The site will also include garages for the new houses, parking and an improved access to the development via Main Street.
Hedges/vegetation growth outside property boundaries: As stated in the previous three magazine articles, can we ask all residents to examine their garden boundary and cut back any overgrowth that is infringing onto pathways in the village. There are a number of areas that have been brought to our attention and the co-operation of residents in keeping their boundary hedges cut so as not to

hinder pedestrians would be much appreciated. Councillors have now revisited this issue and given a number of locations remain either hindering pedestrians or inhibiting the view of drivers, we are working with NYC highways to approach the properties concerned. Thank you to those property owners who have acted following our reminder letters so far.
Potential new Escrick Park Estate development: The Estate are proposing building housing on the land that is presently grass behind the former abattoir adjacent to Carrs Meadow. They held an open session for residents at Escrick & Deighton Club concerning this proposal on Monday 9th September and also presented their plans at the Parish Council meeting the same day. The provisional proposal is 8 plots consisting of four detached houses and four semi-detached properties, along with a small amount of off-street parking. This development is in addition to the redevelopment of the former Abattoir site, access will only be via Carrs Meadow. All residents are welcome to give their feedback to the Parish Council once the planning application is made and prior to the final decision by North Yorkshire Council (NYC) planning department.
Maintenance issues: Faulty lights on the traffic island in the village and streetlamp posts have been reported to NYC and we chase for a response each month. Both village sign plants have been cut back so as not to obscure the signs. The original war memorial bus shelter has been swept out. All grit bins have been verified as ready for the winter period. The rescue float for the pond in Gas House Woods has been reported as used & has been replaced by the Estate. The hedge on Carr Lane has had the top cut back by the Internal Drainage Board, this was necessary to enable the tractor arm attachment to reach the beck side banks for trimming back of foliage.
Volunteer support in the village: If you are reading this and feel you would like to get involved in any aspect of the upkeep of the fabric of the community, then please do not hesitate to initially contact our clerk who will put you in contact with the relevant group where you have expressed an interest. This does not have to be committee involvement; it could just be a small amount of time to assist in the upkeep of the village.
Local Plan Consultation: We provided comprehensive feedback objections during the initial consultation prior to Heronby being removed in the second consultation of the Selby District Local Plan. We are told the planning team are working through comments prior to its submission for government examination.
The NYC Local Plan, that will ultimately replace the SDC Plan, is progressing we are told with an ‘Issues and Options document’ to be available by the end of the year. The call for potential building sites is ongoing and they have commissioned a revised Housing and Ecconomic Development Needs Assessment (HEDNA) survey that will ‘assist officers to determine housing numbers and distribution’.
General Parish ongoing issues:
• Discussions are ongoing concerning future replacement of the ageing posts and chain surrounding the Fish Fountain adjacent to the A19 in the village.
• The Parish Council have applied to NYC for part-funding for a new item for the playground; we still await a response.
• More detail of general ongoing parish issues can be viewed in the minutes of the last Parish Council meeting, available online and printed on the Parish Council notice board.
New Councillors required: We presently have Parish Councillor vacancies, anyone who could spare a couple of hours once a month to join the PC and assist with local decision making would be made very welcome. You would be co-opted into the group, meaning minimal paperwork and no election required; there are no limitations with regard to experience or minimum adult age. For more information, please initially contact our Clerk, Sally Look, clerk@escrick.org
Next Parish Council Meeting: To be held at The Parsonage Hotel (Wenlock Room, adjacent to the hotel reception) Monday 4th November at 7pm. Previous meeting minutes and future meeting agendas are posted on the Parish Council notice board and available on our website www.escrick.org.
After a long and busy first half term, somewhat disrupted by our pesky flies, the children have returned to school after half term refreshed and ready to embark upon their new topics.
Reception children are working on a topic about Celebrations, which includes bonfire and firework pictures using a range of different resources. They are learning about how Hindus celebrate Diwali and have made clay diva lamps.

John Davison, professional interior decorator, is offering a high-class service in all aspects of internal painting and decorating.
The Year 1 children in Mercury and Venus classes loved their dinosaur day at the end of their mini topic. They had the chance to dress up as a dinosaur or wear anything dinosaur related, and during the day they enjoyed making dinosaur biscuits, making their own salt dough fossils, creating paper plate dinosaurs and sketching fossils. In their current history work Year 1 are learning all about castles.
The Year 2 children in Venus and Earth classes had an exciting Traction Man Day, when they created puppet shows to retell the story of the book. They have been learning about how recycling processes work and made their own recycled paper in class. Their history topic is about the story of Guy Fawkes and the origins of our Bonfire Night celebrations.
Year 3 have been working hard on their topic about the history of the railways and are now looking forward to visiting the National Railway Museum this month, where they will be able to see some of the trains they have been learning about in their history lessons in the Great Hall. Part of their day at the museum will be spent participating in the brilliant Wonderlab Showspace workshop. Year 3 are also enjoying using the new Times Tables Rockstars online games, which are really helping with their tables fluency!
Year 4 are continuing their Romans history topic, and this month will be using their D&T skills to work on a number of Roman crafts. They are really enjoying using the box of Roman artefacts loaned from Dig. They will be bringing the Romans to life in their exciting Romans Day in November, when they will open a class museum for parents who will be able to come in to find out more about their children’s work.
Year 5 are now learning about Victorians, including beginning to study A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. They have particularly enjoyed their "Extreme Earth" topic this term, from feeling confident in using atlases to having fun creating models of rivers. They have explored the key features of rivers, and we have been able to relate this to rivers locally.

Year 6 recently enjoyed a trip to York run by YoYo (York Schools and Youth Trust). The children learned about the history and faith background of York as they walked around the city on a horrible history heritage trail. They visited landmarks, including the Minster and the Shambles, meeting people from York’s history such as Emperor Constantine, John Wesley and Margaret Clitherow on the way. It was great for the children to find out more about people in the locality who showed the courage to stand up for their Christian faith.
To celebrate their learning about Ancient China this term, Year 6 will be hosting a special 'China Day' in school. In the morning, children will make Chinese style lanterns and dragon masks, find out their Chinese zodiac symbols, and taste Chinese snacks. In the afternoon, members of the York Chinese Christian Church will be visiting to share activities, such as counting to ten in Chinese and some Chinese maths. Year 6 will also be able to try their hand at traditional calligraphy using authentic Chinese brushes, some traditional paper cutting art and a chopstick challenge.
Recent events: Our Harvest Service was due to take place at the Chapel at Queen Margaret’s School. However, due to our unscheduled closure for fumigation and a deep clean to rid the school of flies, this event took place at school, with two performances to allow more parents the chance to attend. It was lovely to share our harvest event with parents, and the children enjoyed presenting their segments and singing their favourite harvest songs. The children also enjoyed a harvest assembly presented by visitors from Open The Book.
The children all had a brilliant session with a visiting expert on Fencing Day at the start of October. They learned how to use the equipment safely, learned some fencing moves, and used lots of fencing terminology – all of which was a lot of fun! Year 3 are shown below using their fencing skills.
In October, the whole school took part in fantastic space workshops delivered by a visiting teacher. They used virtual reality headsets to appreciate the wonders of our solar system and found out a great deal of facts about the planets and stars. Year 5 are shown below using the headsets.
Rights Respecting School – Silver Award: You may have seen a recent article on the York Press website about
Escrick School receiving the Silver Rights Respecting Award. This reflects the work done across the school and the awareness of the children have of their human rights and responsibilities according to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. Well done everyone, and particularly Mrs Robinson who led this initiative.
Forthcoming events: Of course, in November we start thinking about Christmas events. Miss Winfield and a choir of KS2 children are preparing for a performance of Christmas songs at the Escrick Tea Rooms at the start of December. Miss Wilde is running the Christmas decorations club, preparing for decorating Escrick School’s tree at York Minster.
Wow! What a busy first half term we have had at Pre-school. All of our new children have settled well into Pre-school, and I think it is fair to say that we have all had lots of fun and are super excited for the next half term!
For Mental Health Awareness Day, we read our story ‘The Colour Monster’. This is a great story to teach children about their own emotions and those of other people too. We had a really nice ‘pink’ week emphasising on feeling ‘loved’.
For the last week of half term, Pre-school appeared very ‘spooky’ with a full range of crafts and slimy tuff tray activities ready for Halloween. The children even managed to create some spooky witch’s potions! We had to be careful as the children tried to cast spells on us all!
We also celebrated Diwali with some lovely large scale firework paintings outside!
Next half term we will be enjoying some Bonfire Night activities and getting ready for that big word…CHRISTMAS!

The EPFA is a charity that was formed by a group of parents in Escrick for the maintenance and improvement of the playing fields. On its formation, it created the existing play area on ground kindly provided by The Escrick Park Estate for a peppercorn rent. The EPFA is run by a committee of volunteers who report to the Parish Council. The volunteers raise money, undertake safety checks, clear rubbish and carry out maintenance in order to ensure the village has, and will continue to have, an attractive, safe and stimulating play area for the children.
The committee holds five meetings a year on Tuesdays at 8pm and anyone who wishes to join us is most welcome. The main fundraising event is the Escrick 10K Race and, on average, this has raised £4-5000 per event. These funds have been used to maintain the area and to build reserves for the replacement of equipment when it reaches end of life.
In 2012, we were able to add a basket swing, in 2013 we have added a zip wire and a roundabout and in 2014 we added a table tennis table. Football nets have been put up to encourage use of the goals. The woodland area has been cleared, thinned and a new path dug. The focus is now on growing reserves for future replacements of the original equipment which will be reaching end-of-life over the coming years. (There is about £80,000 of equipment in place with a typical life expectancy of 20 years – so an average of £4000 per year to replace).
At Easter 2024, we held our first ‘Big Clean’ with over 30 volunteers from the community, including several children, doing a great job to get the park ready for the summer. We now plan to hold our first ‘Winter Sweep’ on Sunday 1st December at 10am followed by our next ‘Big Clean’ on Sunday 6th April 2025
10am-12pm. We also hope to hold our first ‘Summer Social’, provisionally scheduled for Saturday 28th June 2025 4-8pm. It would be lovely to see you at any of these events.
Escrick Playing Fields Association is a Registered Charity, Number 1091589. Paul Britton is the chair and can be contacted on playing.fields@escrick.org.
