September 14, 2023 Bradley Lembcke, MD, Interim Chief Executive Officer CHI St. Luke’s Health – Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center 6720 Bertner Avenue Houston, Texas 77030 Dear Dr. Lembcke: On March 23, 2024, the organization, PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE (POP) will celebrate Fifty Years – a great milestone! The celebration, “On Eagles Wings,” will include presentation of the prestigious Anne and Judge Edward “Ted” Patton Award. With this milestone, we feel called to remember from whence we came and honor with whom -- the first 5 hospitals where POP began visiting the sick in 1974, their progressive expansions, and additional surrounding hospital systems. Dr. Lembcke, as Interim Chief Executive Officer of Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center, you are most aptly named to receive the PATTON AWARD on behalf of Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center and the Hospital’s intentional and robust inclusion of Volunteer Spiritual Care over the years. Prior to the event, the Patton Family are hosting a special dinner at the Houston Country Club and we are hoping to hear a few words from each Healthcare System CEO! The Patton Family Dinner will be held on one of the following date: February 8, 2024 As the Hospitals are being recognized, a faculty member from each of these hospitals will also be honored with The Dr. Anastácio de Queiroz Sousa Spirituality in Healthcare Award. We are thrilled to share, Ilyas Colombowala, MD, was nominated and chosen for this Award! Fifty Years! Prior to the formalization of Spiritual Care Departments within hospitals, many of our POP pastors and Lay Chaplains served the patients and families at St. Luke’s by providing Spiritual Care consults each week and on an as needed basis. Reverend Steve Spidell, David Way, Bill Owen, Dot Uthlaut, Don McLeod to name a few. This continues through our Lay Chaplains and on a referral basis and it is our great joy and hopeful legacy to be with the most vulnerable populations when sick, navigating spiritual crises toward faith when doubt reigns, hope when fear prevails, and love when purpose for living needs restored. Often, our Spiritual Care Volunteers complement the Staff Chaplains ongoing spiritual care who have multiple demands upon their time. We sincerely hope to have you and your spouse, or representatives from your Administrative and Medical leadership among us as we celebrate the collaborative history of Volunteer Spiritual Care in the Texas Medical Center which greatly affects the wellness of our vulnerable and beloved communities! On behalf of the Board and Staff, we extend our prayers. Sincerely, President & Executive Director
