Dear Friends,
Surrounded by loved ones, family and friends, we celebrated the graduates of the Class of 2022 at our June Commencement exercises. With parents beaming and pomp and circumstance abound, student speakers addressed their peers, offering poignant and fun reflections of the past four years along with words of wisdom for the years ahead. I am confident that this culmination of hard work has prepared our graduates to be leaders in service to their colleges and communities.
This fall, we welcomed 122 new students into the Pope Francis Preparatory School community. Immediately, our faculty and staff, and all students—new and returning—have been engaged in exhilarating lessons in the classrooms as they settle into their back-to-school routines.
Although this is my sixth year at Pope Francis Preparatory School, each school year feels brand new. As we welcome our latest group of eager and ambitious students back to campus, we are reminded of the important work we do at Pope—forming and inspiring young women and men to make a difference in the world. The memorable experiences of our students, alumni, and their families has allowed us to build a reputation for attracting intelligent, motivated, and diverse minds. I am honored to be a part of this tradition and feel privileged to know we have such engaged and committed parents, alumni, and friends who support our mission.
Since joining the Cardinal family, I have learned that when our community joins together to support a common purpose, we can achieve remarkable things. Today, our student body hails from 40 communities, representing 80
schools. Enrollment has increased by 28%. There are 108 students in the freshmen class. Pope Francis Prep hosts a Summer STEAM program for middle school students which enrolled 114 students over three weeks this summer. The Cardinal Fund has experienced 25% growth year-over-year and 168% growth over the past five years. The number of donors has increased by 29% year-overyear and gifts have increased by 31% year-over-year.
In just the past few years, several new courses have been added to the curriculum. These courses include AP Environmental Science, AP Spanish Language and Culture, AP Computer Science Principles, AP Statistics, AP Art and Design, BIPOC Studies, Cultivating Wisdom and Self-Awareness, and Community and Civic Engagement. In addition to enhancing the curriculum, many new clubs, activities, and programs have been offered to students. These new opportunities include the Cardinal Coders robotics team, preparation for the sacrament of Confirmation, and a girls hockey program and volleyball team.
Pope Francis Prep continues to develop and grow. To ensure the school remains competitive, focused on its
future, and able to maintain small class sizes and a low student-to-teacher ratio, a classroom expansion will occur this fall and winter.
Our campus is a flurry of activity year-round. Whether you were on campus today, last month, or it has been a while, I invite you to come and see us soon. Know that we keep our Pope families and friends in our prayers and I ask that you keep all of us in your prayers.
Kindly, Dr. Paul Harrington Head of SchoolPOPE FRANCIS PREPARATORY SCHOOL first opened its doors on August 27, 2018. That fall we welcomed the Class of 2022 as the first class to join PFPS as ninth graders. These newest Cardinals took a chance, enrolling in the spring of their eighth grade year, at a time when the school was under new leadership and under construction. Families used their imaginations—while wearing hardhats—to tour the construction zone. They trusted that our new school was the right choice for their child and together we embarked on a new journey.
We asked Lily Turmel ’22 to reflect on what it was like to be a freshman in 2018. Lily shared, “When transitioning from the public school system to PFPS, I knew almost no one. While it may seem a new campus would have added stress, surprisingly it brought me ease knowing not only was Pope new to the freshmen but also new to the upperclassmen. Everybody was going through a new transition together which was comforting and something we experienced as a
community. I am extremely grateful to have been in the first freshman class to navigate the halls of the new PFPS. The state of the art facilities and athletic complex made my high school experience both challenging and rewarding.”
This spring we celebrated another “first” with the Class of 2022. These graduates were the first class to spend all four years at PFPS. We beam with pride as we reflect on this class and their tremendous growth as leaders within our
community. We could not be more proud of this group of young women and men. The Class of 2022 represents our mission beautifully. The hard work and sacrifice that went into the formation of PFPS proved to be a bountiful blessing. These young adults are faith-filled leaders and problem-solvers who do their very best to better the world around them. We know they will achieve amazing things.
Today, the Class of 2022 has left the nest and our newest Cardinals have arrived. Lily is attending the University of Hartford this fall. Although she has matriculated to college, three of her younger siblings (Jack ’23, Owen ’25, and Maeve ’26) remain at Pope. Lily shared some advice for her siblings and our newest Cardinals: “Change is a part of life. Change can be hard. High school will bring change. My best advice is to embrace change and trust that God has a plan for you. I hope all current and future Cardinals know that with hard work, PFPS will set you up for success and will help you find your place in the world. The unfamiliarity and uneasiness of high school are just bumps in the road that guide you to finding yourself and your path to success.”
I HAVE SO MANY FOND MEMORIES from my time at Pope, but some of my favorites were made working behind the scenes in theater. I was involved in theater since my freshman year, and I loved the opportunity to work alongside such talented students to put on some really fun plays and musicals. Seeing what my classmates were able to do with their roles gave me a unique glimpse into their talents that I never would have appreciated had I not had the opportunity to see them build an elaborate set out of wooden boards or whip up a tin man costume from scratch. In my senior year, I served as stage manager and loved every moment I spent working with the actors, sound and light crew, hair and makeup artists, costume crew, and set designers to coordinate our productions, and I plan to continue doing this in college!
I am currently studying neuroscience at Northeastern University and I am planning on minoring in either Spanish or German. After graduating, I plan to attend medical school and work as an oncologist in the future.
MY FAVORITE MEMORY FROM PFPS would have to be my time with the Pope Francis Hockey team over the course of my high school career. Looking back, winning a National Hockey Championship in Omaha, Nebraska and the two Super 8 Championships alongside my teammates were unparalleled to any other experience. Personally, it was the morning workouts, late night bus rides and the pregame speeches—moments before we would hit the ice—that will stick with me for the rest of my life. I credit my teachers and coaches at PFPS for pushing me to reach my maximum potential in the classroom, on the rink and on the diamond. I would not be where I am today as a student-athlete without the support system and the relationships made within the PFPS community over my last 4 years.
I am a first year student at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, New York. I plan to major in economics and minor in data analytics in addition to being a member of the baseball team. Upon graduation, I plan to pursue my passion for economics and begin a career in finance.
ONE OF MY FAVORITE MEMORIES at Pope Francis was being on the girls softball team. I met so many of my friends on the softball team that I know I will always keep in touch with. It was amazing watching the team improve from my freshman year to senior year. I especially loved playing in the state tournament during my senior year because it was so fun to travel across the state with my teammates and compete against great teams!
Currently, I am at Assumption University and I am majoring in marketing with a concentration in digital marketing. I am also considering minoring in graphic design. My goal is to ultimately work with small businesses and help them grow their online presence through digital marketing. I am so excited to see what the future holds, and I am so grateful for the foundation that Pope Francis Prep has given me!
WHEN I LOOK BACK at some of my favorite times at Pope, I can’t help but be drawn to the outdoor movie night we had my senior year. It was such a fun experience to be able to get with a really big group of friends outside of class while still being able to participate at an event within the school community.
I am currently a freshman at Dartmouth College where I am majoring in government and economics. After undergrad, I am hoping to attend graduate school to either pursue a JD or an MBA. I would love to work in economic/political consulting once I have finished my educational pursuits.
ONE OF MY FAVORITE MEMORIES from attending Pope Francis Prep was meeting with my friends in-between classes. This may sound like such a simple thing but in those short 6 minute periods, friendships formed and grew and a sense of community was continuously being built. After every class, we all would find our friends and talk about our day. One person could be stressed about their math quiz, while another is already thinking about lunch, and another is focused on a big game. We were all chatting with different people but at the same time we were all in the same position. There are so many amazing memories I had at Pope Francis but those small moments spent with friends were my favorite.
Currently, I am attending Stonehill College as a finance major and I am on the golf team. I would love to work at a major golf company like Callaway or Titleist, in their financial department. This would keep me close to the game of golf while creating a successful future in my career. I plan on working my way up as high as I can into a company while also working with juniors in golf to keep the game going and contribute back what it has given to me.
The Cardinal Coders will compete in an energy-driven game that will test the limits of performance, efficiency, and endurance as they power their innovative thinking on the competition floor in early 2023.
POPE IS THRILLED TO ANNOUNCE THAT CARDINAL CODERS is entering their first competitive season under the direction of Mrs. Slawiak, technology and computer science teacher, and Mr. Salloum math and engineering teacher. FIRST® is an international not-for-profit company that has been sponsoring STEM team challenges worldwide since 1989. The mission of FIRST® is to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders and innovators, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering, math, and technology skills, while inspiring innovative thinking, self-confidence, communication skills, and leadership skills.
CARDINAL CODERS with Mrs. Slawiak, technology and computer science teacher, Dr. Tran, team mentor, and Mr. Salloum, math and engineering teacher.
In order to prepare for their Tech Challenge season, our Cardinal Coders dedicate themselves by meeting after school where they learn to apply the engineering design process. The willingness to develop technical skills is not the only requirement to join the team. Team success depends on being dedicated and focused to the challenge and employing team skills like collaboration, communication, problem solving, creativity, and leadership skills, all necessary to achieve a student-driven experiential project-based learning environment. It is very important that the team can work together to design, build, and program a robot by exploring advanced engineering concepts, brainstorming innovative ideas, applying math, utilizing physics all while developing career-ready skills and knowledge.
On September 10, the Cardinal Coders traveled to the state’s reveal meeting in Needham, MA to learn what the challenge is for the year. FIRST® reveals the challenge at the same time on a worldwide basis to make sure everyone is treated fairly. Our rookie
team attended workshops taught by students their own ages but who have more experience.
“I’m so happy that our Cardinals had the opportunity to meet other MA high school students who have acquired the necessary skills to compete. That makes this program believable in the hearts and minds of our students, ” said Mrs. Slawiak. “In a year we will see our students leading workshops,” added Mr. Salloum.
The FIRST® Tech Challenge (FTC) robotics program allows students to explore global challenges and encourages them to be problem solvers and critical thinkers. For example, this year’s challenge is energy inspired and the challenge that
FIRST® formally revealed worldwide is aligned to the UN’s Sustainable & Development Goal 7, defined by “ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all.” This means that our Cardinal Coders will compete in an energy-driven game that will test the limits of performance, efficiency, and endurance as they power their innovative thinking on the competition floor in early 2023. According to the World Economic Forum, “The transition to clean energy is expected to generate 10.3 million net new jobs globally by 2030. Most of the anticipated job gains are likely to be in electrical efficiency, power generation and the automotive sector.”
In the early months of 2023, the Cardinal Coders will enter into events called qualifiers that are statewide. They plan to attend qualifiers that are local to Western Massachusetts. The World level competitions are hosted in April at Houston, Texas and this past year the Worlds hosted 160 FTC teams and Massachusetts had three teams that qualified to enter.
We wish our Cardinal Coders much success as they embark on this journey.

They truly exceeded our expectations on this project. We are truly grateful!” Connor’s Kindness Project delivers Kindness Kits to children, local hospitals and shelters throughout Massachusetts and is an accredited 501c3 non-profit.

PROM 2022 was held at GreatHorse in Hampden. It was a beautiful night that our Cardinals won’t soon forget!
SENIOR AWARDS AND PARENT APPRECIATION NIGHT. On the evening of May 24, the Class of 2022 and their parents were celebrated. This was an evening for the seniors to say thank you to their parents for supporting them during their time at Pope Francis Prep as well as an opportunity to celebrate the many accomplishments of the senior class.
NHS members met with Michelle Graci, Events Coordinator for Baystate Health Foundation, to present her with a check for $3,116 (a new PFPS record!). Our students participate annually in the RAYS OF HOPE WALK & RUN. However, that was not possible in 2021. Instead, an event was coordinated by NHS members Lily Turmel ’22 and Samantha Culver ’22. Participants wore pink shirts and walked or ran individually to raise funds for Rays of Hope. Congratulations to all who participated and contributed to this worthy cause!

After STUDENT SERVICE HOURS are completed, each student participates in comprehensive assessments. Freshmen and sophomores have professional interviews with their theology teachers or create video presentations about their service projects. Juniors and seniors write reflection papers. Approximately 8,000 hours of service were performed by Pope Francis students in the 2021-2022 school year!
At Pope Francis Prep we are proud to be a TIGHT-KNIT COMMUNITY. To celebrate the last day of classes for the Class of 2022, we surprised them with a fun allschool send off to end their day. It was a special opportunity to wish them well as they embark on their next adventure and to also remind them that they always have a home at Pope Francis Prep!
We are grateful for the POPE PREP PRODUCTIONS team for all that they do to keep our community informed and up-todate with all that is happening at our school. Each morning at 7:50 a.m. the team goes live on the Pope Prep YouTube channel to share the morning announcements with our community.
We were blessed to be able to celebrate our seniors at BACCALAUREATE MASS on June 1st at St. Michael’s Cathedral. Thank you to Mr. Anziano, our Christian Leadership team, Father Stan, Father Mark, Father Jon, Father David, our faculty, staff, and the choir for a beautiful Mass for our seniors and their families.

During EARTH WEEK, all Religion classes gathered by our St. Francis statue for a Prayer Service.
During HOLY WEEK the entire Pope Francis Prep community gathered for a prayerful reenactment of the Stations of the Cross. The stations included prayers and reflections. Our Christian Leadership team served as actors for the stations and provided thoughtful modern scenes to depict the lessons found in each station. Music and beautiful lighting effects helped set the tone for this prayerful service.
We were blessed to begin the 2022-2023 year with a SPECIAL PRAYER SERVICE in our theatre. This was the first time we gathered as a school community and it was wonderful to see our theatre bursting at the seams with new and returning Cardinals.
The CATHOLIC SCHOOL CORD was given to 32 members of the Class of 2022 who attended Catholic Schools from grades K-12. The schools represented included 9 local Catholic schools: Blessed Sacrament, Mater Dolorosa, St. Joan of Arc, St. John the Baptist, St. Martha, St. Michael’s Academy, St. Mary’s Academy, St. Stanislaus and St. Thomas the Apostle. > >
All Latin classes entered into the joy of the Easter season at a Latin Mass. Father Stan was the celebrant and preacher. The school’s music students offered a lovely and moving rendition of César Franck’s Panis angelicus Over the previous months, Latin students had been practicing Mass chants and Fr. Stan beautifully chanted all the celebrant’s prayers.
Congratulations to the five Cardinals who earned ALL-WESTERN MASS for all three seasons. This is quite an accomplishment for our Cardinals! To put things in perspective for the 2021-2022 school year, MassLive named more than 2,100 athletes to its All-Western Mass teams, but only 304 earned All-Western Mass twice, and just 45 athletes earned the honor for fall, winter, and spring. Pope Francis Prep led the way with five Cardinals earning All-Western Mass honors for all three seasons!

ROOTED IN MISSION. Pope Francis Preparatory School is a Catholic, college preparatory community welcoming students of all faiths and promoting Christian values of justice, peace, service, and mercy. Students thrive under the guidance of inspiring teachers, the strength of curriculum and instruction, highly selective college acceptances, modern technology, state-of-the-art facilities, competitive athletics, a robust fine and performing arts program, and supportive families, alumni, and friends.
The COVID-19 pandemic taught us new things and forced us to think outside of the box, get creative, become more innovative, reconceptualize operations and how we utilize space. We learned to expect the unexpected.
Pope Francis Preparatory School has experienced enrollment growth of 28% (an increase of about 95 students) over the past five years. We have become bigger and stronger each year. This exciting growth necessitates the addition of four full size classrooms and will allow Pope Francis Prep to remain flexible, ahead of the curve, accommodating to our enrollment growth, and prepared to offer in-person instruction with adequate space at all times. PFPS has been the fortunate recipient of EANS (Emergency Assistance to Non-Public Schools) grant funding as a result of the
pandemic. A portion of this funding may be used to help offset the cost to add the additional classrooms. Provided the installation of this project remains on track, this addition will be completed by the end of this calendar year and
ready for occupancy in January. Further, the project will not interrupt the daily operations and experiences of the school. These new classrooms will be located on the backside of campus and will be accessible from the hallway on the first floor of the existing building. The new classrooms will be furnished with the advanced technology and the same desks and equipment found in all current classrooms. With full enrollment in the range of 420-440 students, this addition of four classrooms will allow Pope Francis Prep to maximize instructional space and continue to thrive.
There are currently 103 PFPS students who have parents who are alumni of one of our legacy schools!

Over a year’s term, Ambassadors develop the confidence, capabilities,
and community of allies to lead positive change. High school Alumni serve as near-peer mentors, inspiring Ambassadors with their Three Words to Change the World—hopeful aspirations for their generation and our global community.” Sophia was selected as Westfield’s 2018 Project 351 representative and was honored to continue her service throughout high school in the Alumni Leadership Council. She attends the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, in the Isenberg School of Management and the Commonwealth Honors College.
Thank you for your support of Pope Francis Preparatory School, which continues to have a significant impact on the students of today and tomorrow.
This year, Pope Francis Prep was able to make considerable strides. We set records with over $440,000 raised for the Cardinal Fund and a phenomenal $2,936,117 raised in total giving. We were fortunate enough to have increased Cardinal Fund giving efforts by 25% and partnered with over 1,100 benefactors to support our mission. In addition to our annual success, our endowment portfolio increased to over $16,000,000, providing our school community with over $600,000 in annual operational support and scholarships. Your annual generosity, combined with an incredible investment portfolio, provides us with a foundation to make decisions that benefit our outstanding students today and into the future.
Pope Francis Prep continues in its strengths because of the support and leadership of many. Dr. Paul Harrington and the Board of Directors continue to provide a clear vision to ensure that Pope Francis Prep remains a top-notch, premier Catholic school for years to come. This clear vision is accompanied by an exceptional administrative team, talented faculty and staff, dedicated parents, inspiring students, and supportive alumni. This collective community provides a level of trust for our most generous benefactors to make meaningful and significant investments in our most deserving students.
As a proud alum entering my fifth year leading the school’s fundraising efforts, I continue to be inspired by our steady growth. I look forward to working with each of you to ensure Pope Francis Prep continues to prosper as we keep building on the successes of our legacy schools. Thank you to our amazing alumni, parents, grandparents, faculty, staff, board, and friends for supporting our mission and the young women and men of Pope Francis Prep today, tomorrow, and in the future.
Sincerely, Daniel Fenton, CHS ’09 Director of Development
