Insights With POOLCORP WITH VP OF MARKETING KENDALL LARGE
BY JOE TRUSTY
POOLCORP, the world’s largest wholesale distributor of swimming pool supplies and equipment, is celebrating several major milestones in 2025— including its 30th anniversary as a publicly traded company. But despite decades of success, the company shows no signs of slowing down.
To learn more about how POOLCORP is continuing to evolve while supporting both its customers and the broader industry, we spoke with Kendall Large, Vice President of Strategic Marketing.
A Year of Milestones for POOLCORP
For POOLCORP, 2025 isn’t just another year—it marks a series of significant anniversaries. “It’s our 44th year in business and our 30th anniversary as a public company,” said Large. “When I sit back and think about all we’ve accomplished since our humble beginnings in 1981 as South Central Pool Supply, it’s really astounding.”
POOLCORP has grown from a regional operation into a global distribution giant, with nearly 450 locations across the U.S., Mexico, Canada, Europe, and Australia. Large attributes this growth to
a customer-first strategy and a willingness to invest in people and infrastructure. “We’ve always aimed to be in the right market at the right time with the right product. And most importantly, it’s our people—over 6,000 employees, including the largest sales force in the industry—who make it happen.”
POOLCORP’s recent acquisition of Pinch A Penny, the country’s largest collection of independently owned pool and spa retail stores, is one of the company’s most impactful strategic moves. While some eyebrows were raised at the move, Large said it was a natural fit.
The Pinch A Penny Acquisition: Strategic Synergy
“Pinch A Penny is made up of independent franchise owners—retailers who can buy from anyone,” she explained. “The way our distribution brands SEP and Superior serve Pinch A Penny is exactly how we serve our independent pool customers: builders, service pros, and subcontractors. There was a lot of synergy already.”
POOLCORP not only gained a significant retail footprint with the acquisition but also inherited a proven model for consumer engagement and technology-driven retail operations. “What Pinch A Penny has perfected is the customer experience for the DIY pool owner. They’re celebrating their 50th anniversary this year, and they’ve built a strong playbook we can now help scale and share.”
Investing in Independent Retailers
That retail expertise has already made its way into POOLCORP’s broader efforts to support independent pool professionals. One major initiative is the company’s annual Retail Summit, which Large described as one of the most successful events POOLCORP has ever hosted.
“We brought together the best independent retailers, the top vendors, and our internal teams for three days of education, training, and innovation,” she said. “It’s all about creating an environment where retailers can learn, grow, and maximize their success heading into the season.”
The summit featured access to new products, special promotions, and hands-on training, all designed to give independent businesses a competitive edge. “This event is something I’m especially proud of,” said Large. “It’s how we help retailers thrive.”
Post-Pandemic Adaptation
Like every company in the pool industry, POOLCORP had to adjust during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I entered the industry in 2021, just as things were starting to stabilize,” said Large. “And to be honest, I had no idea what I was walking into. During the pandemic, it was all about moving product. Customer experience and education took a back seat.”
As demand normalized, however, the focus shifted back to service. “Now, the conversation isn’t just about getting any product—it’s about getting the right product. And our team’s experience plays a huge role in helping customers make the best choices,” she said.
SWIMPACT: A Broader Mission
Perhaps one of POOLCORP’s most inspiring initiatives is its philanthropic arm, SWIMPACT. Initially focused on swim safety and education, the program has evolved into a broader community relief platform.
When fires devastated parts of Southern California, POOLCORP donated $25,000 to the PHTA’s Step Into Swim Fire Relief Fund. “These types of disasters will unfortunately continue to happen, but we’re in a position to help—and we feel a responsibility to do so,” Large said.
Eyes on the Future
With momentum strong heading into 2025, POOLCORP is looking ahead with optimism and energy. One highlight on the horizon: ringing the bell at the NASDAQ in October to celebrate 30 years as a public company.
“We’re bringing the sales leaders who helped make it happen,” said Large. “They’re the ones who’ve led the teams, opened new locations, and driven growth.”
POOLCORP is also doubling down on education and empowerment through its Management in Training (MIT) program and continuing to develop marketing resources through its EDGE program. “Whether it’s national brands, tools to improve efficiency, or marketing support— everything we’re doing is centered on helping our customers succeed,” she said.
As They Approach a Platinum Milestone, LATHAM CONTINUES DRIVING INNOVATION
BY JOE TRUSTY
As Latham Pools prepares to celebrate its 70th anniversary next year, the company shows no signs of slowing down. On the contrary, CEO Scott Rajeski says the company is leaning harder than ever into what made them a leader in the first place — innovation, execution, and an unwavering focus on the customer experience.
Reflecting after connecting at this year’s Pool & Spa Show in Atlantic City, Rajeski observed a noticeable resurgence of energy in the pool sector. “The excitement, the enthusiasm at the show — it was probably one of the better shows in many years,” he shared. “Traffic was great, attendance was up, and, you know, a lot of buzz back in
the industry, which is great for all of us.”
Meeting the Moment: The Rise of Plunge Pools
One of Latham’s most talkedabout recent developments is their expanded plunge pool collection — a timely response to changing consumer demands as lot sizes continue to shrink across North America.
“The response has been phenomenal,” Rajeski said. “People are using their pool in the backyard as an entertainment feature these days. You know, the Milan has really resonated, and we’ve just launched the vinyl liner package pool Calypso series in four configurations. Starting with a very simple pool, but then one that becomes more and
more feature-rich over time, with benches and ledges that are in there.”
Latham’s plunge pools are designed not just for smaller spaces, but for faster, easier installation — a major advantage in today’s tight labor market. Their new Calypso series was recognized at the International Pool | Spa | Patio Expo for its innovation in installation time, energy efficiency, and ease of maintenance.
“It’s a very simple design. It’s a really easy install for a pool builder,” Rajeski explained. “More importantly, it’s a much faster install, so the consumer is able to get into their backyard and get into their pool and enjoy it much quicker.”
Turning Challenges Into Opportunity
Amid recent reports of widespread issues with concrete pool deterioration — sometimes called “concrete cancer” (ASR) — Latham sees an opportunity to educate consumers about alternatives like fiberglass.
“It’s unfortunate for all the homeowners who bought one of those pools and are experiencing going through these issues and concerns,” Rajeski said. But the shift in consumer awareness aligns perfectly with Latham’s long-standing messaging.
“We’ve been trying to market the benefits of fiberglass against concrete pools. I do think this gives us another opening in terms of educating consumers and builders about fiberglass. There is a lot of opportunity; whether it’s the faster install, the low-cost maintenance, or the fact that you’re getting a shell built in one of our factories. Plus we’re delivering it right to the backyard, setting that vessel in the ground, and the homeowner never has to worry about anything again.”
Timing has worked in Latham’s favor. Their “Sand State Strategy” — a focused and concerted effort to expand its market penetration, launched just as headlines about concrete pool issues became more prominent.
“We’re advertising and marketing all of the benefits of fiberglass pools — the ownership, the faster install, the customization, the cost benefits versus a concrete pool. We’ll continue to drive the awareness of fiberglass ownership.”
Leading The Digital Revolution in Pool Buying
Latham’s innovation isn’t limited to product design — it extends into technology platforms designed to transform the pool-buying experience.
Tools like the Latham Pool Visualizer, which allows consumers to see how a pool would look in their backyard via augmented reality, were born out of real-world frustrations.
“You’re out there spray painting your backyard, moving templates around, trying to get a feel of what it’s going to look like,” Rajeski recalled. “I remember I said, you know, imagine if you could come up with a tool — just like in Christmas Vacation with Clark Griswold when he imagines the pool in his backyard and he can visually see what it’s going to look like.”
Visualizers not only enhances the consumer experience but also accelerate the sales cycle, said Rajeski. “It was all about enabling the pool buying decision for the homeowner, but also generating a lead direct to the dealer to hook the consumer and build their opportunity to close the sale.”
Latham’s tech ecosystem also includes Measure by Latham Pools — an AI-powered device that uses LIDAR and HD cameras to create precise measurements for safety covers and vinyl liners in minutes.
“It all started with a conversation about the disruption caused by measuring a liner in the backyard... very time-consuming, completely manual, and lots of opportunities for mistakes,” Rajeski explained.
Instead of requiring a two- or three-week process with multiple site visits, Measure by Latham Pools can map a pool with one technician in under 30 minutes. “It designs and quotes the liner or cover immediately and sends that quote right back where you can hit the button, create the purchase order, and send all of that design and cut sheets right back to our manufacturing facilities to produce that liner.”
Importantly, the system’s built-in AI continuously improves with use. “The more measurements we collect, the smarter the device gets — cutting that design time down, hopefully eventually to 10 or 15 minutes.”
It’s a major efficiency boost for both dealers and homeowners. “Now they’re measuring four or five times more liners in a particular day... It’s a huge profitability play for the builder.”

Making Waves: The Rise of Swim In Place POOLS & DYNAMIC WATER ENVIRONMENTS
BY MARCUS PACKER
PHOTOS: CURRENT SYSTEMS
Swim-in-place systems are making a major splash in the pool industry as homeowners increasingly prioritize fitness, therapy, and dynamic play. Over the last two decades, swimming pools have evolved from tranquil backyard retreats into multifunctional spaces designed for movement and wellness. At the forefront of this evolution is Current Systems, the manufacturer of the Riverflow pump—a powerful, low-head, highvolume current system designed to bring water to life. swim-inplace systems are making a major splash in the pool industry as homeowners increasingly prioritize fitness, therapy, and dynamic play.
“Ten to twenty years ago, people looked at a swimming pool as a
place of tranquility and a place for family to gather,” says Phil De Tournillon, co-founder of Current Systems. “Now there’s this interactive opportunity for them to get wet.” The shift from passive pool lounging to active aquatic experiences is fueling a surge in interest for swim-in-place systems, lazy rivers, and dynamic water environments that enhance both health and enjoyment. The Rise of
Swim In Place Pools
A growing number of homeowners are embracing fitness-focused design. Swim-in-place systems, like the Riverflow pump, provide continuous water resistance that transforms even compact pools into endless lap lanes. But according to De Tournillon, it goes
beyond swimming. “You don’t need to be a swimmer to get the benefit of current,” he explains. “There’s a sense of movement that the body feels—a therapeutic push and pull that provides pleasure and health benefits.”
This sensation, he says, replicates the natural feeling of being in the ocean or a river. For homeowners, that means a more immersive experience, whether they use their pool for exercise, hydrotherapy, or simply floating in gently moving water.
The powerful Riverflow ® Pump by Current Systems powers many of today’s lazy rivers, swim-in-place pools, and adventure pools.
Small Pools, Big Function
One of the biggest drivers behind this trend is space. Not every backyard has room for a 60-foot lap pool, but that doesn’t mean homeowners need to sacrifice functionality. “People are restricted on the size of their spaces,” says De Tournillon. “But they’re really looking to immerse themselves in the water, not just sit beside it.”
Thanks to powerful, adjustable systems like Riverflow, even modest plunge pools can now offer robust fitness and therapeutic capabilities. That flexibility is helping usher in a new category of “performance pools” tailored to compact, urban environments.
The Smart Pool Era
With the rise of pool automation and smart homes, the ability to control a swim current has become just another tap on the app. Riverflow integrates seamlessly with platforms from Pentair, Hayward, Jandy, and Poolside Tech’s “The Attendant.”
“These systems give the client a single source to control lights, jets, and the current system,” explains De Tournillon. Variable speed controls allow users to customize their experience based on the activity—slow for relaxation or light therapy, and faster for exercise or play.
“The Attendant by Poolside Tech has taken it even further,” he says. “They’ve developed a way to add variable speed control, giving the client even more versatility to fine-tune their experience. It’s quite exciting.”
Enter the Adventure Pool
Dynamic water environments aren’t just for workouts. They’re also driving the rise of the “adventure pool,” a trend where features like lazy rivers, slides, and waterfalls create a resort-style experience right at home. Riverflow plays a key role here too.
“We’ve done designs where jets actually propel swimmers coming out of a slide chute,” says De Tournillon. “It keeps the energy going after the initial splash.”
He notes that many homeowners return from vacations wanting to replicate that high-energy resort feel in their own backyard. Whether it’s a current loop that powers a lazy river or directional jets that enhance a waterslide experience, the goal is to make every moment in the pool more engaging.
Hybrid Pools: Where Tranquility Meets Motion
Despite the uptick in motion-centric pool designs, De Tournillon doesn’t believe the rise of active pools spells the end of traditional aesthetics. In fact, many clients want both. “You can have this beautiful mirror-glass surface and, at the flip of a switch, bring it alive with movement,” he says.
This hybrid model is becoming increasingly popular—one moment it’s an elegant infinity-edge pool perfect for entertaining, the next it’s transformed into an aquatic playground or a resistance training lane. The versatility allows for broader enjoyment across age groups and lifestyles.
Pools That Adapt to People
Customization and control are key. “If you’ve got fiveand six-year-olds using the river, you’re going to want to slow it down,” says De Tournillon. “If teenagers show up, you can ramp it up.” The ability to fine-tune performance based on user preferences and safety is making these systems especially attractive for multigenerational households.
And when the current’s off? A lazy river can become a tranquil walking lane. It’s this kind of adaptability that underscores how far pool design has come.

The Art of Custom Waterfalls WITH ROCKSCAPES CANADA
BY MARIANNE TRUSTY | PHOTO CREDITS: ROCKSCAPES CANADA
Few elements have the ability to transform an outdoor space like a custom waterfall. Whether it’s the sound of cascading water, the sculptural beauty of rock formations, or the immersive ambiance they create, custom waterfalls bring a new level of artistry and sensory experience to backyards. One company that’s made this form of outdoor design its signature is Rockscapes Canada. Led by Sean Mangan and his brother Padraic, the second-generation artisans have spent decades refining the craft of artificial rockwork and waterfall design.
This year marks the 40th anniversary of Rockscapes Canada, a company started by Sean’s parents in 1984. Originally rooted in theme park
installations, their first project was Ontario Place’s now-iconic Wilderness Ride. Since then, the firm has brought their expertise in artificial rock to zoos, aquariums, casinos, and increasingly, luxury backyards. “We’re second-generation rockscapers,” said Mangan. “We’ve done it for zoos, aquariums, and now we’ve brought it into some pretty special backyards.”
A Personal Passion for Custom Waterfalls
For Mangan, the creative spark to focus on waterfalls didn’t arrive overnight. It evolved from years of hands-on experience. “I was surrounded by a pretty great group of guys when I was coming up in the industry,” he recalled. “They really taught me a lot of
things. And a couple years ago, it became clear—I wanted to do this my way, with my stamp on it.”
That stamp reflects a commitment to blending art and engineering in ways that feel both natural and intentional. “Anywhere that we do a project, we want it to look like this rock was here first—and then someone built a house or a pool around it,” said Mangan. That philosophy drives everything from material selection to placement and how a waterfall interacts with its surroundings.
Design That Disappears Into the Landscape
One of the guiding principles of Rockscapes Canada’s approach is ensuring their work integrates seamlessly into the landscape.
We try to blend it so the feature doesn’t look like a bolt-on,” said Mangan. “The hardscaping and pool elements should abut the rock in a way that feels like it was always there.”
This can involve integrating wood decks, planters, and water features into a single flowing structure that feels cohesive. The attention to detail extends to everything from the texture of the rock to how water is routed through different channels and ledges.
“Little things make a difference,” said Mangan. “Putting the pool coping up against the artificial rock so it looks recessed, making sure planting pockets are included to soften the edges—all of it helps sell the illusion that the rock belongs.”
The Advantage of Artificial Rock
While the end result mimics natural stone, Mangan emphasizes that artificial rock is a deliberate design choice—and a smart one when creating custom waterfalls. “Weight is a real factor,” he explained. “We’ve seen pool decks crack under the weight of natural boulders. It’s why we stay in our lane with artificial rock.”
This approach also allows Rockscapes to create hollow structures, providing an opportunity for hidden equipment or internal access for maintenance. It also aids in waterproofing. “We can go underneath the feature to inspect and test the water systems before we even apply finishing textures,” said Mangan.
Multi-Functional Features
Today’s backyard waterfalls are increasingly more interactive. “The swimming grotto has become huge,” said Mangan. “People want more than just a feature to look at. They want to swim into it, climb it, hide under it, or even build a bar inside of it.”
Featured Projects That Tell the Story
Asked about a standout build, Mangan recalls a particularly intricate 35-foot tall artificial rock slide for a hotel in London, Ontario. “It had this winding slide that flowed through a full cave system. I was only 19 when I did that one. I still look at it and think, did I peak too early?”
More recently, he completed a
massive backyard project that included a three-story water slide and an elaborate grotto. “It had all the bells and whistles. I even got to test the slide myself—which was memorable for sure.”
Common Pitfalls to Avoid
According to Mangan, one of the biggest mistakes he sees is overloading a pool structure with too much real rock. “We’ve been called in to look at waterfalls that started to shift over time, where water was flowing out the back instead of over the face,” he said. “The weight issues are real, and they don’t show up until years later.”
As more homeowners and designers look to integrate naturalistic features like custom waterfalls into backyard spaces, Mangan offers this advice: “Size isn’t everything. A lot of people blow the budget trying to go massive, but you can get an incredible effect by layering textures, adding lighting, and using creative placement.”

A Layered Approach That Saves Lives: THE PYRAMID OF POOL SAFETY
BY JOE TRUSTY
Drowning remains the leading cause of accidental death for children ages one to four in the United States—a tragic reality that is often preventable. As May marks National Water Safety Month, there’s no better time to spotlight the steps parents, guardians, and pool owners can take to protect children during swim season. Dr. Adam Katchmarchi, a nationally recognized expert in drowning prevention and water safety, joined Pool Magazine Podcast to offer practical, potentially life-saving advice.
Understanding When and Where Drowning Happens
One of the most alarming statistics Katchmarchi shared is that 70% of toddler drownings happen during non-swim times. “We tend to
think drowning only occurs when kids are in the water with us,” he explained. “But for young children, it often happens when they wander off and find a water feature unsupervised.”
Whether it’s a backyard pool, decorative pond, or even a creek nearby, unsupervised access to water is a major hazard. That’s why having proper barriers and safety fencing is so critical. “Any water feature is attractive to a curious child. Without barriers, it becomes an invitation to tragedy.”
The Risk of Overconfidence
Even parents of older children need to be cautious. According to Katchmarchi, many parents overestimate their child’s swimming ability. “Research shows parents are not always the best judges of how skilled their child is
in the water. That’s why revisiting swim lessons periodically is so important.”
He also cautioned against assuming that swimming skills learned in a backyard pool automatically transfer to natural bodies of water like lakes or rivers. “Currents, cold temperatures, and the absence of quick help in those environments introduce new risks,” he said. “The pool is the best place to build foundational water competency.”
Drowning Can Happen Fast— and Silently
“Most parents expect that their child would call out for help if they were in trouble, but that’s not always the case,” said Katchmarchi. “Drowning is often silent. Children can slip under the water in seconds.”
He emphasized the need for active, focused supervision and debunked the idea that a gathering of adults inherently means someone is watching the pool. “When everyone is watching, no one is watching. That’s why designating a Water Watcher is so effective.”
Protecting Those Most at Risk
Children between ages one and four are at the highest risk of drowning, but Katchmarchi also flagged a sobering reality for children with autism. “Kids with autism are 160 times more likely to drown than their neurotypical peers. Many are drawn to water and prone to elopement.”
“Knowing how to swim is one critical layer of protection, but it doesn’t eliminate risk,” said Katchmarchi. He recommends a multi-layered approach that includes supervision, barriers, alarms, water competency, and emergency preparedness.
“We need to think in terms of layers, because supervision can lapse. Even skilled swimmers can panic or become fatigued. It takes a combination of safeguards to create the safest environment possible.”
Safety Starts at Home
The rise of pool-sharing platforms means more homeowners are renting out their pools to neighbors and guests. Even if you don’t have children yourself, you still have a responsibility to keep others safe.
“We created a rental safety checklist that applies whether you’re listing on Airbnb or just hosting friends,” said Katchmarchi. “Post your address by the pool, identify your safety equipment, and make sure guests understand your rules.”
Katchmarchi praised Pool Magazine’s Pyramid of Pool Safety infographic, which outlines layers of protection in a clear and accessible way. “We talk about layers in all types of accident prevention because we can’t rely on just one thing to work every time.”

Beatbot AquaSense 2 Ultra Sets New Standard For
AI-POWERED POOL CLEANING
BY ALISE EVERTON | PHOTOS: BEATBOT
In the rapidly evolving world of pool maintenance, Beatbot has emerged as one of the most exciting companies pushing the boundaries of what robotic cleaners can do.
Their newest innovation—the AquaSense 2 Ultra—isn’t just another robotic pool cleaner. It’s the world’s first AI-powered, five-in-one cleaning system, designed to clean every inch of your pool with cuttingedge intelligence and unmatched efficiency.
After just a few short years on the market, Beatbot is establishing itself as a technology-first disruptor in the industry. “Our founder has over 10 years of experience in the home robotics industry,” explained Patrick Jennings of Beatbot. “With that, we’ve been able to grow rapidly, and our R&D team makes up more than 70% of our workforce. We’re really focused on making the best product and making it work for the consumer.”
What Makes The Beatbot AquaSense Ultra 2 Different?
Unlike traditional robotic pool cleaners that follow blind, repetitive patterns, the AquaSense 2 Ultra uses HybridSense AI Pool Mapping, a fusion of artificial intelligence, ultrasonic sensors, infrared, and an onboard AI camera to intelligently scan, map, and adapt to any pool layout. “It gives the robot a true understanding of its environment,” said Jennings. “It can adapt in realtime to different shapes, slopes, and obstacles, making sure every inch is covered.”
This data is processed on a quadcore Cortex-A7 1.8 GHz CPU, giving the AquaSense 2 Ultra more computing power than many desktop computers had just a few years ago. That advanced processing allows the robot to react dynamically as it cleans, optimizing every movement based on the realtime conditions of the pool. What really makes the Beatbot
AquaSense 2 Ultra stand out is that it’s the only robotic cleaner on the market tackling five key functions:
1. Pool Floor Cleaning
2. Wall Scrubbing
3. Waterline Cleaning
4. Surface Skimming
5. Water Clarification
“We’re trying to make pool ownership more fun,” said Jennings. “This one device eliminates the need for multiple pieces of equipment.”
At the heart of its movement capabilities is an industry-first propulsion system, allowing the robot to transition smoothly between zones—whether it’s gliding across the floor, scaling the walls, or skimming debris from the surface. Once those tasks are complete, it activates the ClearWater Clarification System, a natural water clarifier cartridge that enhances water quality and clarity.
Smarter Navigation With CleverNav
One of the biggest frustrations pool owners have with traditional robotic cleaners is their lack of efficiency. Many randomly roam the pool, repeatedly covering the same areas or missing critical spots. Beatbot solves that with CleverNav, its proprietary AI navigation system.
“CleverNav works like GPS for your pool,” explained Jennings. “It plans the most efficient cleaning path. On the floor and surface, it follows an S-shaped pattern. On the waterline and walls, it switches to an N-pattern. And after each cleaning, you can see a full pool map and cleaning history in the app.”
The result? Maximum coverage, minimal overlap, and complete transparency for the user.
Cleaning That Targets Debris— Even in the Corners
One of the standout features of the AquaSense 2 Ultra is its ability to
detect and collect debris, rather than just pushing it around like many cleaners do. The key is its dual side brush system, working in tandem with a main roller brush and a powerful water flow that pulls debris inward for collection.
“We designed this robot with an industry-first dual side brush system that gets into hard-to-reach corners,” said Jennings. “That water flow creates suction that ensures debris isn’t just moved—it’s picked up.”
Additionally, the AI camera gives the robot the ability to recognize leaves, sticks, dirt, and other pool debris, optimizing its route and cleaning pattern to hit the areas that need the most attention.
Pool Owners Have Real-Time Control With the Beatbot App
The AquaSense 2 Ultra isn’t just autonomous—it’s interactive. With the Beatbot app, pool owners can steer the cleaner manually when it’s on the surface, adjusting direction and speed as needed.
“Imagine you see a leaf and want to go get it—you can,” said Jennings. “And when you’re done, just tap the ‘return to edge’ button in the app, and it guides itself back to the pool wall for easy pickup.”
Voice Alerts Keep You Informed
Unlike most robotic cleaners that silently operate in the background, the AquaSense 2 Ultra offers realtime voice alerts to inform users of its progress, system status, and battery life while it’s on the surface.
“It’s not going to have a full-on conversation with you,” said Jennings, “but it does provide audible updates so you don’t have to keep checking the app.”
That combination of automation and instant feedback is yet another way Beatbot is streamlining the pool ownership experience.
“We’re not just trying to be another pool cleaner,” Jennings emphasized. “We’re building something that makes pool care truly effortless.”

It’s that mission — to enrich lives daily — that serves as a guiding principle across departments, from R&D to marketing to support. Every new product must pass a simple but critical test: will this make pool and spa ownership easier, safer, and more enjoyable?
Enter: King Technology’s Frog® Algae Blocker 4Pro
King Technology’s latest answer to that question is the Frog® Algae Blocker 4Pro, a
revolutionary algae prevention product designed specifically for the service professional. Released in 2024, this EPAregistered product simplifies algae control with a powerful formula delivered in a premeasured, drop-and-go fabric pod — no measuring, no mess, and no guessing.
“This product is about giving pool pros what they’ve been asking for: simplicity, effectiveness, and peace of mind,” said Granlund. “With Frog Algae Blocker 4Pro, one pod treats 10,000 gallons and protects against algae for six months. That means for a 30,000-gallon pool, just drop in three pods and you’re done.”
Each pod is loaded with copper sulfate pentahydrate — 52% active ingredient — and bolstered by a proprietary blend of four stain-preventing chelant
that help the copper stay in solution without bonding to surfaces. “Staining is the number one fear for service pros when it comes to copper-based products,” Granlund said. “So we were incredibly intentional with our formula. We actually include 25% more stain inhibitors than other leading brands.”
A Delivery System Unlike Any Other
While the active ingredients are powerful, the true innovation lies in the delivery system. The product uses a specialized fabric pod that gradually releases the algaecide into the water over a few hours — fast enough to work quickly, but slow enough to prevent any issues with pumps, filters, or salt chlorine generators. There’s no need to shut off equipment during application, and no risk of damage to pool systems.
Once the ingredients are released, the pod floats horizontally to indicate it’s empty and can be discarded — making it easy for pool professionals to spot and remove during their next service visit.
“The fact that it’s seven times lighter than a standard quart of liquid algaecide and completely pre-dosed means there’s less weight to carry, less risk of spills, and less time wasted,” said Granlund. “It’s just a cleaner, faster, more professional way to do water care.”
Designed With Pool Pros In Mind
What sets King apart is how deeply they engage with the pool service community. Granlund explained that the Algae Blocker 4Pro wasn’t developed in a vacuum — it’s the result of seven years of research, including ride-alongs with service pros, focus groups, and ongoing field testing.
“We spent time on the job with techs to understand the reality of their day-to-day — the challenges they face, the equipment they haul, and how unpredictable each backyard can be,” said Granlund. “Every detail of this product, from its chemistry to its packaging, was designed around what we heard.
A Sustainable Solution for the Industry
Beyond ease of use, King Technology is also pushing the envelope on sustainability — a growing concern in the pool and spa industry. According to Strategic Market Research, the pool and spa chemicals market is projected to grow by $3.9 billion over the next few years, with eco-friendly solutions identified as a key driver.
The Algae Blocker 4Pro fits squarely into that future. Its lightweight fabric pod takes up virtually no space in landfills, especially compared to bulky plastic bottles. “Only about 8–12% of plastic is actually recycled, even when it’s labeled recyclable,” said Granlund. “So we worked with sustainability experts and discovered that minimizing plastic volume is the next best thing.”
The long-lasting six-month dose further reduces waste, eliminating the need for frequent chemical top-ups and plastic packaging. The supply chain also benefits: “We’re not shipping heavy bottles full of liquid anymore. We’re shipping concentrated pods — it’s greener, more efficient, and just makes sense.”

Pentair Pool: Level Up YOUR OPERATION WITH AUTOMATION
BY MARIANNE TRUSTY PHOTOS: PENTAIR POOL
In today’s connected world, consumers expect convenience at their fingertips. For the pool industry, that means automation isn’t just a luxury anymore—it’s a necessity. On a recent episode of the Pool Magazine Podcast, we sat down with Israel Saari, Digital Solutions Category Manager at Pentair Pool, to explore how Pentair automation tools are reshaping the industry for both homeowners and pool professionals.
Meeting the Modern Customer Where They Are
“Homeowners expect a convenient and connected experience, including for their swimming pool,” said Saari. With over 25 years in the technology
space, he’s seen firsthand how digital expectations have shifted. From smart fridges to connected doorbells, tech-savvy homeowners want their pools to be just as intelligent—and easy to control from their phones.
“The pool is one of the biggest investments many homeowners make,” he explained. “They want connected experiences that save them money, that create ease of life, so they can focus on other things that are more important to them.”
At Pentair, automation begins with a centralized system that controls the entire pool pad— everything from pumps to lighting—via the Pentair Pool app. This interface makes pool care simpler and less intimidating
for homeowners while providing full access and control no matter where they are in the world.
Pentair Automation: Smart Solutions for Every Pool
Saari highlighted several key products in the Pentair automation lineup, starting with the IntelliFlo3 Variable Speed Pump. “It’s a great entry point into automation,” he said. “You’re getting a premium pump, but also the benefit of built-in WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity, plus a couple of relays to control other components like a heater, lights, or a booster pump.”
For those managing more complex pool systems—think dual bodies of water, pool/spa combos, and multiple pumps
Pentair’s IntelliCenter is the flagship solution. It offers robust capabilities, including integrated scheduling, user permissions, and control of every feature through the app.
And for homeowners with existing EasyTouch or IntelliTouch systems, Pentair hasn’t left them behind. “We offer an upgrade kit,” Saari said. “You just swap out the panel—it takes an hour or less—and now you’ve got access to the new Pentair Pool app experience.”
For budget-conscious upgrades, there’s also IntelliCenter Lite, ideal for clients with existing breaker panels who want to add intelligent control without fully replacing infrastructure.
The Power of Remote Monitoring
As automation becomes standard, the real value-add is remote monitoring. “When our customers install IntelliCenter, they can walk the homeowner through app setup—but also add themselves as managed users,” explained Saari.
This dual-access setup opens
the door to Pentair’s Remote Monitoring Dashboard, a browserbased platform that gives pool professionals a bird’s-eye view of every system they maintain.
Rather than logging into individual apps, techs can monitor hundreds of IntelliCenter systems from a single interface. “It shows connection status, system information, air and water temps, heater performance, chlorinator output, lighting, pump performance, even chemical levels if the pool is equipped with IntelliChem or IntelliChlor,” said Saari.
And it’s not just for viewing—techs can sort systems by alarms and even connect directly to make changes remotely. “It’s extremely valuable both to the homeowner and to our customers,” he emphasized.
Why It Matters for Pool Pros
Whether you’re a builder or a service technician, the benefits of remote automation are substantial.
“For builders, you want that eye in the sky,” said Saari. “Even if you’re not servicing the pool, you can
make sure everything is functioning correctly after the build. If the customer is fiddling with settings or something isn’t right, you have instant access.”
For service professionals, the platform offers something even more powerful: proactive maintenance and fewer truck rolls. “They know what the pump should sound like, how it should flow, what kind of power draw is normal,” he explained. “When something’s off, they can see it before the customer even knows there’s a problem.”
This translates to better service, faster diagnosis, and reduced travel. “It could be a simple fix—like adjusting a schedule or pump flow— and you can do that without ever leaving the shop,” he added.
Pentair offers hands-on training through Pentair University. “If you’re new to automation, our trainers and field reps won’t let you fail,” Saari said. “They’ll walk you through everything and make sure you’re confident using these tools.”

Exploring AI Inverter Pump Technology With
MOOV
POOL PRODUCTS
BY MARCUS
PACKER | PHOTOS: MOOV POOL PRODUCTS
In an industry where legacy brands dominate, Moov Pool Products is making waves— quite literally—by introducing cutting-edge technology that promises to reshape the future of pool equipment. At the heart of this innovation is the Moov AI Inverter Pump, a self-learning, adaptive, and cloud-connected piece of equipment that’s redefining what pool professionals and homeowners can expect from their pump.
Founded as a joint venture with global manufacturer Fairland, Moov is relatively new to the North American market. But behind its youthful brand is serious firepower. Fairland, best known globally for their heat pump technology, manufactures hundreds of thousands of pumps, salt systems, and cleaners each year. In markets like Europe, Australia, and Latin America, they’ve become leaders. Moov now acts as Fairland’s North
American face—delivering nextgen equipment optimized for this market’s unique challenges and preferences.
To learn more about how this revolutionary pump works—and what sets it apart from traditional variable-speed models—we spoke with Fred Lachance, Director of Sales & Marketing at Moov Pool Products. During our conversation, Lachance provided insight into the technology behind the pump, how it integrates with existing systems, and why Moov believes inverterdriven products represent the future of the pool industry.
A Pump That Is Smart Enough To Think For Itself
The standout product in Moov’s lineup is the AI Inverter Pump, which Lachance described as “the first pump of its category that is an inverter pump launching in the North American market.” It’s not just variable speed—it’s intelligent.
Built with an algorithm embedded in the drive module, the pump continuously estimates flow rate based on pressure and automatically adjusts its speed to maintain optimal performance. “If the filter gets clogged or anything else on the pad causes restriction, the pump recognizes that and selfadjusts,” explained Lachance.
Rather than relying on costly flow meters to determine output, Moov’s approach uses internal diagnostics: pressure sensors, wattage readings, and multiple baseline calibration tests upon startup. “It runs at three set speeds and captures performance data to create reference points. From there, it constantly adapts to changes,” said Lachance.
This means that a clogged filter or stuck valve doesn’t compromise your pool’s performance—it prompts the pump to compensate in real-time.
One of the most impressive features of the Moov AI Inverter Pump is its built-in fail-safes. If water pressure becomes dangerously high due to a blockage or restriction, the pump stops automatically. Users are alerted via the cloud-connected Moov Pool app, which notifies either the pool owner or the technician with an error code.
“All of our equipment comes cloud-enabled out of the box,” said Lachance. “There’s no centralized automation panel needed. The brain is in the cloud.” This appbased system allows Moov’s equipment to be monitored, adjusted, and serviced remotely— whether by the pool owner, a professional, or even Moov’s own support team (with permission).
Designed for Integration, Built for the Future
Even though Moov’s pumps feature smart control through their own app, they don’t force customers into an ecosystem. The pumps communicate easily with popular automation systems from the “big three” manufacturers via standard connections, and that cable comes included in the box.
Still, Lachance is confident that the future of pool automation won’t involve central panels. “Those were created when individual components weren’t smart. But now, every component can be independently controlled. Why pay thousands extra for a board just to connect to your phone?”
Moov’s approach reflects a broader trend toward decentralized automation—giving pool owners more choice and better control at a lower price point.
So Quiet You Might Think It’s Off
In addition to intelligence, the Moov AI Inverter Pump boasts whisperquiet operation. “We challenge people at trade shows—this is a live unit. If you find a quieter 1.65 HP pump, I’ll give you this one for free,” said Lachance.
This silence is thanks to its inverter technology, which converts AC power to DC through a modulation system that stabilizes electrical current and minimizes fluctuations. The result is smoother, more efficient performance with less heat, less vibration, and remarkably low noise. “We’re registering 32.6 decibels at one meter,” Lachance said. “Often people don’t realize it’s on.”
The pump’s motor—a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM)—further reduces friction and heat, contributing to a longer lifespan and higher efficiency compared to traditional induction motors.
Simplified User Experience
Moov’s design philosophy centers around user experience. The pump’s large touchscreen interface is a departure from typical buttonand-dial controls. “You’ll see a big percentage display showing the speed, wattage usage at the top, and intuitive navigation that makes it easy—even for a homeowner who doesn’t know what a filter is,” said Lachance.
It may seem unorthodox to put a full display on a piece of backyard equipment, but Moov sees it as necessary. As homeowners become less familiar with the technical aspects of pool systems, simplicity becomes critical.
Overcoming the Challenges of Adoption
Despite the technology, quiet performance, and sleek interface, Moov faces challenges.
“We’re a new brand. Builders aren’t going to flip overnight,” admitted Lachance. But that’s starting to change.
“Once someone tries one of our products, they usually come back,” he said. “It’s about earning trust through performance and service.”
Education is another hurdle. “Compared to Europe or Australia, we’re five to ten years behind on technology adoption in this industry,” said Lachance. But with DOE regulations mandating variable speed pumps on most systems, the tide is beginning to turn.
A Specialized Approach
Unlike full-line manufacturers, Moov is focused on what they do best. “We don’t do gas heaters or singlespeed pumps. We focus on inverterbased technology, and we aim to be the best at it,” said Lachance.

A Series of Bad Bills Puts Florida
POOL INDUSTRY IN JEOPARDY
The Florida pool industry is under siege from a flurry of dangerous legislative proposals threatening to dismantle vital protections that contractors and consumers have relied on for decades. In a recent episode of the Pool Magazine Podcast, Dallas Thiesen, Chief Government Relations Officer for the Florida Swimming Pool Association (FSPA), gave an in-depth look at the mounting challenges facing the industry.
FSPA Successfully Defends Against SB 712
Earlier this week, Pool Magazine reported on a troubling amendment to Senate Bill 712 (SB 712), which proposed allowing general contractors and building contractors to construct the wet deck areas around swimming pools. The FSPA quickly mobilized, identifying the threat hidden deep within the amendment’s language and taking decisive action. “This was not something that was being
put forward by a group of building contractors beating down the halls in Tallahassee saying, ‘Hey, we need this, we want this,’” Thiesen explained. “This was a single constituent issue by a single representative, and there was no constituency for this. It was unwarranted, unasked for, and we could not just stand by and let this happen.”
Traditionally, wet deck construction falls strictly under the expertise of licensed pool contractors, who are trained to adhere to stringent safety standards. Expanding that scope to general and building contractors would have dramatically altered the landscape of pool construction in Florida, potentially jeopardizing public safety.
“Essentially, you’d be letting general contractors and building contractors who are not qualified to build swimming pools build a good portion of the structural components,” said Thiesen. “And
BY JOE TRUSTY
we just could not let that happen.”
Through rapid lobbying efforts and grassroots mobilization, FSPA was able to have the harmful language stripped from SB 712. Amendments were filed in both the Senate and House to remove the provision, and ultimately, the industry celebrated a hard-fought victory.
But the win was short-lived.
Right on the heels of defeating the SB 712 amendment, another, even more alarming bill emerged: House Bill 991 (HB 991).
The Bigger Threat: House Bill 991
“What this language does is not just get rid of the Construction Industry Licensing Board,” Thiesen cautioned. “It would get rid of every single licensure board under the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) in Florida.”
Bill Proposes Elimination of Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB)
The scope of HB 991 is staggering. It proposes the elimination of oversight boards for 32 different licensed professions. This not only includes pool contractors but also engineers, realtors, veterinarians, harbor pilots, and many other professions. For the pool industry specifically, the abolition of the Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB) would devastate contractor accountability and consumer protection.
“The CILB oversees the licensure of contractors in Florida and handles complaints and discipline,” Thiesen said. “If you eliminate the board, you take away that avenue for transparency and accountability. All licensing and discipline decisions would be made
by bureaucratic staff. These people are not contractors or subject matter experts.”
Currently, the CILB provides an essential layer of protection for both licensed contractors and consumers. Its members, appointed by the governor, are practicing professionals who understand the nuances of the industry. Thiesen emphasized how crucial their experience is.
“The irony of a licensing board is that they have very limited jurisdiction over those who aren’t licensed,” he noted. “When a close call comes up, the board often grants licensure to someone so that they can supervise them rather than leave them unlicensed and outside regulatory reach. Without that flexibility, you risk pushing more people into unlicensed activity.”
Contractor Continuing Education on the Firing Line
Today, contractors must complete 14 hours of continuing education every two years to stay current on crucial changes in the Florida Building Code and best practices in construction. Without CE, Thiesen warned, outdated construction methods could proliferate, putting homeowners at risk.
“Time is money in construction,” Thiesen emphasized. “If you slow down a permit by a month because of misunderstandings, that’s time the contractor isn’t working — and it costs their clients money.”

Basin Pool Designs Has The Recipe FOR CREATING SPECTACULAR LUXURY POOLS
Nick Buchholz shares his secret recipe for designing over-thetop luxury pools and outdoor living environments.
BY JOE TRUSTY PHOTOS: JIMI SMITH PHOTOGRAPHY
Nick Buchholz didn’t come into the pool industry through construction or design school—he came in through the kitchen. His early ambition was to become a world-class chef, and it’s that culinary background that now shapes his approach to custom pool building at Basin Pool Designs. Based in Tennessee, Buchholz doesn’t just build pools—he assembles immersive environments with the same precision, layering, and intention as a Michelin-starred tasting menu. “It’s quite similar,” says Bucholz, “starting with the raw ingredients and trying to turn them into something spectacular.” That mindset—equal parts obsessive and creative—has positioned Basin as one of the most design-forward firms in the country, with pools that feel more like art installations than backyard amenities.
At first glance, Buchholz’s journey from aspiring chef to luxury pool designer may seem unconventional. But look closer, and the connection between haute cuisine and high-end pool building becomes apparent. Much like designing a gourmet menu, every Basin project is layered with thoughtful detail, curated ingredients, and a deeply personal creative process.
“I think about it like I’m building a menu or creating a new dish,” said Buchholz, “the process is the same.”
From Culinary Arts to Outdoor Artistry
Raised in Tennessee, Buchholz initially pursued a career in fine dining, attending culinary school and working under top chefs. But he soon realized the restaurant life—working nights, weekends, and holidays—clashed with the lifestyle he wanted. A friend introduced him to pool and landscape design, and from there, Buchholz’s trajectory shifted.
“I honestly thought I was going to be a chef,” he says. “But I was fortunate enough to get to talk someone into letting me design some projects, and I taught myself CAD.”
As 3D modeling software became accessible, Buchholz saw an opportunity. Unable to hand-draw, he leaned heavily into the new digital tools, quickly developing a skillset that blended his creative
instincts with technical precision. He spent years designing for toptier firms in Phoenix—including California Pools—before moving back home to Tennessee to start Basin Pool Designs.
Basin Pool Designs: Beyond the Ordinary
While many builders in the region chased production work during the pandemic boom, Buchholz went the opposite direction, focusing on highly custom, boutique projects.
“I’m not interested in volume,” he explains. “I want every project to be unique. It doesn’t excite me to get up and build a 20-by-40 rectangle in every backyard.”
“One of my mottos I picked up from an incredible chef I worked for was ‘peasant food fit for a king,’” he shares. “We don’t have to use $100-a-square-foot tile to make it look excellent.”
The Process: Part Art, Part Engineering
For Buchholz, the design journey begins with immersion: understanding the client, the architecture of the home, the surrounding landscape, and the emotional experience the space should create.
“I sweat the small stuff,” he says. “Every little line matters. I want to bring the outdoor project indoors and vice versa, so it feels like one seamless environment.”
Buchholz’s attention to detail isn’t limited to visuals. Basin projects are engineered to the highest standards, with pressuretested plumbing, compaction testing, and retaining systems that rival commercial installations. That blend of artistic vision and structural rigor is what earns the trust of architects, engineers, and discerning homeowners alike.
The Art of Engineering The Art of Engineering
Since 1980, Aquamatic pool covers have focused on safety, energy savings and ease of use. With our technology, we are setting a higher standard through innovation and design. Supported by a 20 year mechanical warranty, and the most standard features of any automatic cover in the industry.

A Circle of Inspiration
Though Basin Pool Designs calls Tennessee home, the firm’s creative DNA is informed by Buchholz’s time in the Southwest and his participation in organizations like Tributary Revelation and Genesis. Influences like Kirk Bianchi, Randy Angell, and Ben Lasseter have helped shape his approach.
“I’ve been fortunate to be around so many good designers,” he says. “But I’m also inspired by people outside the pool world—architects, landscape designers, even chefs.”
In fact, one of Buchholz’s favorite projects—a striking elliptical pool set on a private runway in Lebanon, TN—was originally inspired by the nose cone of a DC-9 airplane. The design curves harmoniously with the surrounding garden walls and includes a custom wood diving board installed in the center of a Baja shelf.
“It was a risky design,” Buchholz admits. “But the ellipse was so captivating for that space. Even though the home is all straight lines,
the pool just opens everything up in a more organic way.”
“I like still water. It calms me,” he says. “I’m an intense person all day, and when I see that clean design and those earth tones reflecting in the water, it just levels me.”
It’s that feeling—restorative, peaceful, refined—that Buchholz wants to deliver for every client.
Selective by Design
The statement “We don’t build for everyone” appears boldly on Basin’s website. It’s not an attitude of elitism—it’s about alignment.
“I’m passionate and opinionated,” Buchholz says. “It’s easy to tell if a client will respond well to that. And if they understand the level of craftsmanship and experience we bring, then they’re probably a Basin Pool Designs client.”
That alignment is key, especially when the firm is asked to push boundaries. From raised spas and fire features to complex geometry and full outdoor
living compositions, Buchholz is often asked to deliver the exceptional—and thrives under those expectations.
“Every one of these builds is a different challenge,” he adds. “But that’s what keeps it exciting.”
What’s Next for Basin Pool Designs?
Looking ahead, Buchholz wants to explore designs that blend structure and softness—organic forms with refined precision.
“I’d love to do a full perimeteroverflow circular pool,” he says. “Something modern, but it feels calm. More grasses, more earth tones, less flash.”
Whatever the form, one thing is clear: Buchholz will approach it the same way he approaches every project— with a chef’s discipline, an artist’s eye, and a builder’s commitment to excellence.

A Legacy Built In Water: ROBERT GEORGE HAUK
Robert George Hauk’s influential career in the aquatic industry began through early displays of resourcefulness, creativity, and a strong entrepreneurial drive. Born in 1939, Robert demonstrated an early interest in construction and water-based projects, embarking on his first significant endeavor at the age of 13 in 1952.
This initial project involved building a swimming pool in his family’s backyard—not for profit but as a personal undertaking motivated by a keen interest in aquatic engineering. Despite his father’s skepticism regarding the utility and economic viability of swimming pools, Robert persisted with determination. Partnering with his lifelong friend, Joe Lynch, Robert embarked on a collaborative journey that would span decades and set the tone for his future professional undertakings.
Limited by resources but undeterred by challenges, Robert and Joe manually excavated the pool using shovels. Demonstrating innovative thinking, they repurposed rejected grain silos purchased from Clayton and Lambert—a company soon to patent the steel wall swimming pool in 1954.
Robert capitalized on Clayton and Lambert’s rejected inventory for his initial installations, ingeniously adapting these grain silos into pool basins whose depths were available in increments of 30 inches, typically resulting in depths ranging from 8 to 12 feet. This detail was recently confirmed by Clayton and Lambert, who noted their grain silos were originally sold in standard 30-inch heights. This early adaptive use of materials highlighted Robert’s pioneering approach to pool construction, setting a precedent for

NICK HAUK
creativity, innovation, and adaptive resourcefulness that would characterize his entire career.
Establishing Circle Pools
Robert rapidly expanded his expertise, and by 1953, at age 14, he completed a significant early project for the Schroeder family in Kirkwood, Missouri. This pool installation was especially notable not only for its superior craftsmanship but also for its indirect historical significance in motorsports. Dorsey Schroeder, who grew up swimming in the family’s Circle Pool, would later rise to fame as the 1989 Trans Am Series champion in his rookie season with Roush Racing. Schroeder further competed professionally in NASCAR events and the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona (Motorsport Magazine, n.d.), highlighting how Robert’s pools indirectly contributed to shaping a future motorsports champion.
Robert initially priced his pools at $1,995, an inclusive figure covering labor, materials, a ladder, a basic filtration system, and a pioneering Jacuzzi pump designed for effective water circulation and maintenance. This affordable price point significantly facilitated the rapid adoption of private swimming pools throughout the Midwest, making pool ownership accessible to broader socioeconomic groups and thus democratizing the recreational aquatic experience.
As Robert said, “$1,995 was a lot of money for a 14 year old kid, back then.”
Industry Impact and Innovation
Robert Hauk’s pioneering vision extended well beyond traditional recreational uses of swimming pools. Recognizing pools’ broader potential, he foresaw
their applications in athletic training, scientific research, and even aerospace exploration. This visionary perspective established Circle Pools as a leader in innovative pool construction and technological advancement.
One of Robert’s most extraordinary and initially understated contributions came from a project commissioned by NASA and McDonnell Douglas Aircraft. Without extensive guidance or knowledge of the project’s ultimate purpose, Robert constructed an indoor grain silo pool within an empty warehouse.
It was only years later that he learned the significant impact of this installation—it served as a neutral buoyancy simulator used to mimic weightless conditions encountered by astronauts during NASA’s Mercury and Gemini
missions. Robert’s pioneering work in buoyancy simulation became foundational, influencing current astronaut training practices employed in NASA’s Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory (NASA, n.d.).
Robert George Hauk passed away peacefully on Valentine’s Day, reuniting in spirit with his beloved wife. His enduring legacy is a testament to the lasting influence of visionary leadership, creative resilience, and innovative problemsolving within the aquatic industry. Robert’s story continues to inspire, exemplifying the lasting significance one individual can impart upon generations, with his innovations continually shaping the aquatic industry, one pool at a time.

EXPECT AI TO REVOLUTIONIZE POOL MAINTENANCE IN THE YEARS TO COME
Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming industries across the board, and the pool industry is no exception. While swimming pool maintenance may seem like a traditional sector, advancements in AI-driven technology are making a significant impact in areas such as routine service, predictive maintenance, pool safety and pool construction. The integration of AI into these aspects has already begun revolutionizing the efficiency, safety and precision of pool-related businesses.
To better understand how AI is shaping the future of the pool industry, I’ve been at the very forefront of discussions on this topic. Recently, at an annual leadership conference, I had the opportunity to address hundreds of pool professionals about how AI will impact the industry in the coming years. More recently, I led a seminar where I addressed many questions and concerns about AI adopting a larger role in pool service, maintenance, and construction.
The most common concern pool professionals had about AI was whether it would replace their jobs. Many in the industry are worried that automation and AI-driven diagnostics would eliminate the need for skilled technicians and builders. When you stop and consider it, it is a pretty legitimate concern.
The good news, at least for the pool and spa industry, is that in the coming decades, the impact is likely to be negligible. Point of fact, a recent article in the Financial Times suggests (paywall) that employment related to excavation, service, cleaning and repair sectors are
likely to go largely unscathed in the next decade.
I find one of the most exciting AI applications in the pool industry to be predictive maintenance. Rather than reacting to pool equipment failures, AI will soon be able to allow professionals to anticipate and prevent issues before they occur. By leveraging IoT (Internet of Things) sensors, AI can monitor pool pumps, filters, heaters and chlorinators in real time, and analyzing data to detect failures.
Future AI-driven systems will send realtime alerts to pool professionals about exactly what is happening on the pool equipment pad. Instead of simply notifying a technician that a pump has failed, AI will be able to diagnose whether it’s a clogged impeller, a failing capacitor, or a voltage issue–saving time and reducing unnecessary service calls. Leading manufacturers like Hayward, Pentair and Fluidra are already putting millions of research and development dollars into seeing how AI can interplay with their automation systems, and this technology is expected to become even more advanced in the coming years.
AI In Pool Safety: Smarter Cameras And Alarms
Safety has always been a top priority in the pool industry, and AI is playing a pivotal role in creating safer swimming environments. AI-powered camera systems like CamerEye use machine learning to detect motion patterns and identify potential drowning risks. Unlike traditional security cameras, AI-driven pool alarms can differentiate between normal swimming activity and distress situations, triggering immediate alerts to pool owners and lifeguards.
AI is also making its way into alarm systems that go beyond simple motion detection. Smart alarms will be able to analyze sound waves to detect signs of distress, such as splashing or yelling, and differentiate them from everyday pool activity. This advancement can be crucial in reducing false alarms while improving the response time in actual emergencies.
AI’s Impact On Pool Construction
AI-powered tools are improving the design, measurement and installation processes, making pool construction faster and more precise. One innovative development in this space is an AI-driven robot capable of tying rebar. In the pool construction world, rebar reinforcement is a crucial step in building durable concrete pools. Automating this process would reduce labor costs, minimize errors and speed up construction timelines.
Manufacturers are beginning to embrace AI as a point of differentiation. Latham, one of the leading manufacturers of fiberglass and vinyl liner pools, has introduced AI-powered measurement technology that uses AI to generate highly accurate measurements of a backyard, ensuring a perfect fit for the pool and eliminating inefficiencies to allow contractors to expedite the planning and installation process while improving accuracy.
Adapting To A Changing Poolscape
One of the biggest hurdles for pool service companies isn’t the technology itself— it’s getting buy-in from staff and technicians to adopt AI in their processes and procedures. Change can be difficult, and many experienced professionals may resist new AI-driven tools simply because they’re used to their existing methods. The adage “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” applies here, and overcoming this resistance will require a shift in mindset.
Focus on demonstrating how AI makes your teams’ jobs easier, rather than positioning it as a replacement for skilled labor. Remind them that AI isn’t here
to take jobs but to improve efficiency and allow technicians to focus on more skilled aspects of pool service.
For instance, AI is already optimizing pool service routes as companies leverage it to enhance scheduling, reduce fuel costs and improve response times. AI-powered dispatch systems can analyze traffic patterns, customer urgency and service history to ensure technicians are routed as efficiently as possible.
I believe the pool industry stands at the threshold of a new era—one where AI enhances efficiency, safety and precision without replacing the invaluable expertise of pool professionals. While automation may shift certain tasks, the heart of the industry remains hands-on, built on service, craftsmanship and customer relationships.
At the end of the day, AI isn’t here to take jobs—it’s here to make the industry smarter, safer and more efficient. And for those willing to adapt, the opportunities ahead are as deep as the pools they service.

Turning Up The Heat: IN-POOL FURNITURE & FIRE FEATURES
As outdoor living spaces continue to evolve into true extensions of the home, homeowners are increasingly seeking luxury, function, and style in every element of their backyard designs. This year, in-pool furniture and fire features are taking center stage as two of the most in-demand trends, transforming pool decks and sun shelves into five-star resort-style environments. To get an expert perspective, we sat down with Frank Vitori of AquaBlu Mosaics, one of the most trusted voices in poolside accessories.
Mass Adoption of Sun Shelves Sparks an In-Pool Furniture Revolution
Frank Vitori credits the meteoric rise of in-pool furniture to the widespread popularity of the sun shelf, also known as the Baja shelf. “Over 90% of modern custom inground pools are now being built with a sun shelf,” he shared. “People have come to realize that it’s not just a stylish design element—but a shallow-water hangout zone that brings comfort, safety, and versatility to families and guests.”
He points to industry innovators like Ledge Lounger, which helped define this category with their Signature Chaise. “I gotta give a lot of credit to Ledge Lounger and Chris Anderson for seeing the potential,” Vitori said. “They started with one chair at trade shows and now their products are part of nearly every luxury backyard.”
Following their example, brands like Floating Luxuries and Tenjam have entered the market with fresh takes. “Floating Luxuries came out with their Kai Collection, which is oversized, ergonomic, and super convenient to fill in place with a garden hose,” said Vitori. “I’m a big guy myself and prefer the extra room these chaises provide.”
One of the most distinctive product lines comes from Studio Red Rock, which specializes in cast concrete in-pool furniture. “These are heavyduty, commercial-grade pieces that don’t need to be filled with water because they already weigh over 160 pounds,” explained Vitori. “That permanence is a big selling point for resorts and hospitality clients. Guests can’t drag the furniture around or damage it—once it’s in place, it stays put.”

Sustainability is also gaining momentum in the outdoor furnishings space. European-style brands like Vondom are leading the way with eco-friendly materials, such as the Ibiza Collection made from recycled ocean plastics. “There’s no reason something sustainable has to be boring or unattractive,” said Vitori. “The Ibiza Collection is a great example of that— it’s stylish, high-quality, and it’s helping clean up the ocean. That’s a win-win.”
Going Beyond The Chaise
It’s no longer just about the lounger. “We’re seeing more diversity in product offerings—rockers, modular sofas, side tables, even daybeds,” said Vitori. Ledge Lounger’s Affinity Collection is one example, offering ottomans and configurable seating that adapts to the size and shape of the sun shelf.
Fire Features: A Focal Point of Year-Round Use
As homeowners look to make their outdoor spaces usable year-round, fire features are becoming a musthave. Vitori points to two standout manufacturers— Prism Hardscapes and The Outdoor Plus—as leaders in this category. “Prism Hardscapes specializes in GRFC cast concrete, offering that natural stone look. They’re sealed, color-through, and ready to ship,” he said.
In contrast, The Outdoor Plus brings more contemporary flair, with powder-coated stainless steel and hammered copper finishes. “The copper options age beautifully over time and add a real wow factor,” noted Vitori.
One of the more eye-catching designs to hit the market recently is Prism Hardscapes’ Sunflower Fire Bowl. “It breaks the mold—literally. It’s a sculptural centerpiece that looks incredible on modern decks,” said Vitori
Fire & Water: A Visual Power Combo
When it comes to combining fire and water, models like the Cazo Bowl and Lombard are popular, but custom fabrications are on the rise. “We’re seeing more requests for 10-foot fire-and-water features, full automation, and custom pans and burner kits,” said Vitori. “Designers are pushing boundaries, and the manufacturers are stepping up to meet the demand.”
Insurance Premiums On The Rise
BY DREW SCHNEIDER
HOW POOL PROS CAN STAY AFLOAT
Recently, Grimes Pools was in the thick of their busy season. Builds were in every stage, some still in permitting, others halfway done, and they barely had time to look up. Then their renewal hit: another premium increase with no heads-up and no strategy to reduce it.
Fortunately, they reevaluated their needs with a new carrier who stepped in with a clear plan: a full review of their program, a benchmark against industry peers, and a roadmap for how to move forward. Going with a pool-specific program, resulted in about 15 percent savings, and risk management improvements like driver safety protocols and subcontractor agreements. Today, they have direction, better protection, and the confidence to
focus on growing their business. So why are companies like Grimes Pools seeing their rates spike? And more important, how do you stay afloat? Let’s dive into the four forces pushing premiums higher, the pitfalls to watch when you shop for coverage, and the practical steps that can soften the blow at renewal time.
The Four Currents Lifting Pool Insurance Premiums
1. Claims and litigation are swelling.
Slip-and-falls around wet decks, chemical handling injuries, construction defect suits—every claim costs more than it did five years ago. Industry-wide, liability payouts have surged, climbing an average of 16% annually, with no slowdown in sight. Juries are also
handing out larger awards (the so-called “social inflation” effect), so carriers pad rates to keep loss ratios healthy.
2. Mother nature packs a bigger punch
Hurricane Idalia caused an estimated $2.5 to $4 billion in insured losses, with total economic damage potentially reaching $20 to $30 billion. Add to that a record-breaking year for hail in Texas—affecting over 2 million homes—and extensive wildfire losses in California, and reinsurers (the companies that insure your insurer) are facing mounting costs. As reinsurance expenses climb, primary carriers pass that burden downstream, contributing to higher premiums for policyholders.
3. Materials and labor costs keep climbing.
Materials and labor costs continue to rise due to persistent workforce shortages and price increases for essential construction materials. Additionally, uncertainty around tariffs on imported steel and aluminum could push these expenses even higher. Repairing the same claim simply costs more, and underwriters factor these increased costs directly into your premium.
4. Shrinking carrier appetite.
Fewer insurers are willing to write pool and spa risks—especially in high-claim states or for builders with even a minor loss history. Carriers are trimming their books, limiting coverage, or exiting the space altogether. Less competition means less pricing pressure, and underwriters get pickier about who
they’ll take on. That combination drives premiums up and narrows your options.
Planning Ahead: Five Moves to Keep Costs Contained.
Budget for reality, not hope. Build an eight to ten percent lineitem increase into next year’s P&L. If you beat it—great. If not, you’re covered.
Document your safety culture.
Underwriters love evidence: signed training logs, SDS binders, weekly job -site inspections. Hard data can earn credits worth three to five points on your rate.
Review limits and endorsements. Did you add commercial pool remodeling? Start subbing out more work? Growth shifts your risk profile; adjust coverage before the insurer does it for you.
Benchmark against peers. Ask your broker for a blind comparison of deductibles, limits, and rates across similar pool companies in your region. Gaps— high or low—signal where to tweak.
Lock in multi-year program. Some carriers offer two or threeyear rate agreements for accounts with solid loss histories. It’s hedge insurance against the next hard market wave.
If you’d rather spend your time pouring concrete than decoding exclusions, a specialized partner helps. A solid pool insurance program closes industry-specific gaps, advocates during claims, and delivers risk management tools that keep premiums from spiraling.

Understanding Deepened Foundations In POOL CONSTRUCTION
When it comes to building a swimming pool, what happens below the surface is just as important as what’s visible above it. In areas with unstable, expansive, or soft soils—or on sloped lots—standard foundations simply won’t cut it. That’s where deepened foundation systems come into play. These structural supports, often hidden underground, are crucial for ensuring the long-term stability and safety of a pool.
Depending on site conditions and engineering requirements, contractors may rely on a variety of pier types—each with its own strengths and limitations.
In this article, we explore the most common deep foundation options used in pool construction: friction caissons, driven piles, helical piers, and end-bearing caissons.
Deepened Foundations in Pool Construction: Caissons, Piles, and Piers Explained
Friction Piers/Caissons
Friction caissons are drilled holes, filled with reinforcing steel and concrete. The engineer calculates the friction between the earth and the outer surface of the concrete. These rely upon the surface area of the outside of the caissons and the coefficient of friction of the soil for support. Therefore, their diameter and depth are designed to develop sufficient surface area and soil friction. If the earth is removed they lose their ability to support the structure.
Driven Piles
Driven piles work in much the same way as friction caissons, except that they are pounded into

the ground. Precast concrete, wood or steel I-beam piles are driven into the ground by a pile driver to the point of refusal. They are not often used in residential construction, due to the noise and ground vibration they cause.
The vibrations can actually damage nearby structures. They also require large machinery that often cannot access residential lots. Driven piles can be “end bearing,” friction or a combination of both. They are most often used in swimming pools adjacent to water (lake front, beach front, swamp land), that have soft or incompetent soils.
Helical Piers
Helical Piers are giant soil “screws” that are drilled into the soil. They have significant limitations, due to their size and method of installation. Helical piers are limited in their load bearing capacity to the torque that the installation machinery can deliver. Helical piers also do not perform well in loose or soft soils. Their development depth is limited by the length of the shaft.
For pools, helical piers are most often used in areas of expansive soils or high water tables to hold down the structure. They are the most economical and weakest of the available options. To resist point loading on the tip of the shaft, grade beams or mat foundations are often utilized to spread the load across the underside of the pool floor.
End-Bearing Caissons
As the name implies, end-bearing caissons (seen above – Featured Image) are drilled or driven until the end of the pile contacts supporting bedrock or soils. They often develop support through a combination of skin friction and end load bearing. Bell caissons, flare out on the bottom to increase the contact footprint of the shaft. They require specialized augers to create the flared end. The portion of a pier above grade is a “free standing” pier (aka: column). The tops of the columns are tied together by beams or a mat foundation to resist movement. They are often seen on bridges, overpasses and above grade swimming pools.
You can see why a soils report is required for pier supported structures. Without a soils report, the structural engineer will not know the soil’s coefficient of friction, it’s load bearing capacity or the expansion index for their design.

Flipping The Script: This Platform Lets POOL CONTRACTORS REVIEW THEIR CUTOMERS
BY JOE TRUSTY
IBY GENESIS (PHTA
n an industry where customers have long held the power of public review, a new platform is flipping the script—and service professionals are paying attention. Mike Meadows, a seasoned pool pro, has created something unique with CustomersKarma.com, a review site that allows contractors, service techs, and small business owners to rate and review their customers.
The concept sounds like something many service pros have only dared to dream about. And as Meadows explains, it was born out of necessity.
“We’d finish a job, walk the customer through everything, ask them if they were satisfied—and they’d say yes. Then when it came time to pay, it’s like the anchor dropped,” said Meadows. “It kept happening to me, and I’d hear it from other guys too. We’re putting in the work, sometimes even
fronting parts and equipment out of our own pocket, and then fighting to get paid.”
The idea behind Customers Karma is simple: give service professionals a platform for risk assessment, much like credit agencies, medical records, or FICO scores give businesses a clearer picture of consumers. Meadows, who has prior experience in mortgage and auto sales, says those industries have long used data to evaluate who they’re working with.
“They run your FICO score. If it’s low, they know you’re gonna be harder to work with, so they factor that in. But pool guys? We get nothing. No warning,” Meadows explained. “You can be the nicest person on the phone for two minutes and still leave your last pool guy with an unpaid balance and ghost them the next minute.” Meadows’ review site aims to change all that. Service providers
can log on, create a profile for a customer’s address, and leave feedback—positive or negative— based on their experience. It’s free to use for now (though Meadows is considering a $15 annual fee), and reviews can be anonymous, allowing professionals to post without fear of direct retaliation.
How It Works
When a user logs into Customers Karma, they input the customer’s address, which generates a template for that home. Google pulls an image of the house, and from there, the professional can rate the customer and describe their experience. While some have concerns about privacy, Meadows was quick to point out that all reviews are tied to publicly available information—name and address only—and that users are encouraged to focus on verifiable claims.
“We’re not posting social security numbers. We’re not leaking credit card info,” said Meadows. “We’re just posting real, firsthand experiences. ‘I did the work and didn’t get paid.’ That’s all it takes to warn the next guy.”
The question that hit Meadows hardest, and ultimately defined the purpose of the platform, came from one particularly bad review:
“Would you do work for this customer?” That question, he says, is the cornerstone of the entire platform.
“There’s a review from a guy who installed a part, got paid, and a few days later the customer said, ‘I found it cheaper online, pulled it out, and now you owe me a refund,’” Meadows said. “That stuff happens more often than people realize. This gives us a way to warn others.”
He also shared another example where he completed a heater install for a customer in Beverly Hills. Despite saving the client money and completing the job to spec, he spent 24 hours fighting to get paid.
“It was a nightmare,” he said. “I kept asking myself— do I leave a review or let the next guy walk into the same trap?”
Not Just for Rants—Positive Reviews Welcome
While many people assume a platform like this would become a dumping ground for gripes, Meadows says the opposite is starting to happen.
“We’re seeing more and more five-star reviews,” he noted. “Guys are leaving notes like, ‘I’ve worked with this customer for eight years—always pays on time, great to deal with.’ It’s not just about warning people—it’s also about lifting up the good ones.”
To add an additional layer of protection and context, reviews are tied to addresses—not searchable by customer name or by city-wide queries. You have to know the specific address you’re looking up.
“That was intentional,” said Meadows. “We didn’t want it to be a witch hunt. You’re not going to just browse for dirt. You look up an address you’re about to service, and you see if there’s a pattern.”

Pool Tile, Coping, & Kickflips THE UNIQUE LIFESTYLE OF THIAGO DASILVA
BY JOE TRUSTY
PHOTOS: THIAGO SILVA, JEFF HAMPE
In Florida’s competitive pool construction scene, you’ll find a wide range of subcontractors—but few bring the same energy, attitude, and personal flair to the job as Thiago Dasilva. Originally from Brazil, Dasilva came to the U.S. looking to build a better life for himself and his family. Today, he owns and operates Greenstone Tile and Pavers, a small but busy operation where he stays hands-on with every project.
Dasilva isn’t the kind of guy who’s chasing status or running a big crew. He’s the one doing the work—installing tile, coping, and pavers on high-end residential pools throughout the Tampa Bay area. Contractors who need a solid installation often call on him,
especially for more detailed jobs. If you’re following any of the pool industry Facebook groups, chances are pretty good that you’ve already seen some of his work.
Point of fact, we recently featured a Hampe Pools project during our Pool Magazine webinar on Tile Trends—an elegant, modern backyard design that drew attention for its vibrant mosaics and clean execution. Thiago Dasilva worked as an employee of Hampe Pools on that job, helping to bring that project across the finish line with precision.
Though he’s often brought in as a subcontractor, Dasilva takes pride in treating every job like it’s his own. Whether it’s a straightforward waterline or a complex glass
mosaic, he approaches each project with the same goal, delivering high-quality work that both he and the builder can be proud of.
“I love seeing people smile when they see the completed job,” Dasilva told us. “That’s what makes me feel proud—when the homeowner is happy and the builder is satisfied with the result. That’s the greatest reward for me.”
Unlike some subcontractors who rush through work to move on to the next job, Dasilva believes in taking his time to get it right. He’s not interested in cutting corners or tackling too many projects at once. Instead, he focuses on delivering quality, one pool at a time.
“I don’t like to be all over the place,” he said. “I take my time. I don’t rush through the job. I care about what I’m doing.”
That mindset—coupled with his attention to detail—has made him a go-to name in a region where pool construction never slows down. He’s the type of installer builders can count on for a clean layout, tight grout lines, and an end result that lives up to the design.
When asked what separates a good installer from a great one, Dasilva answers without hesitation: “Compassion. You’ve got to care about what you do.”
Over the years, he’s had the opportunity to work alongside some of the best in the business, but he’s quick to give credit to those whose work has also influenced him.
“I’ve learned a lot from Jeff Hampe. On every job, I always learn something new. I’ve also learned a lot from observing the work of guys like Jimmy Reed, Ray Corral, Danilo Bonazza, and so many others,” he said. “I look up to all of them.”
But Dasilva has also seen his fair share of mistakes out in the field—work that may look okay on the surface but doesn’t hold up over time.
“I see people just putting mud straight against concrete without any thinset or bonding agent,” he explained. “That’s a big one. It might look fine at first, but later it cracks, separates, and causes problems. You have to prep properly or you’re setting yourself up for failure.”
He’s just as critical of rushed layouts and sloppy grout work. “You walk onto some jobs and you see tiny cuts in the tile that throw the whole thing off. It might be functional, but it’s not clean. That kind of stuff bothers me.”
One of the most challenging jobs he’s ever tackled involved a massive infinity-edge pool with custom mosaics across the floor—an intricate installation that took him nearly seven months to complete.
“There was a lot of slope and depth to deal with,” he said. “It was a challenge from start to finish, but I learned a lot on that job. When it was said and done, I felt incredibly proud of the work I did there.”
Despite the complexity of projects like that, Dasilva still finds joy in the everyday rhythm of the job. Whether it’s prepping the surface, setting tile, or double-checking a layout, he approaches each phase like a craftsman—even if he’s not the kind of guy who uses that word to describe himself.
While his tile work speaks for itself, there’s one detail about Dasilva that tends to surprise people: on rare occasions, he’ll drop into the pool with a skateboard before the job even begins. For most tile installers, that empty concrete shell is just a workspace. For Dasilva, it’s sometimes a playground—at least when the shape is right.
“I grew up skateboarding back in Brazil,” he said. “It’s been a part of my life since I was six years old. So when I find a shell that’s got good curves and transitions— usually the old pools from the ’70s—I can’t resist. I bring the board out.”
It doesn’t happen on every job. In fact, he says it only happens maybe once or twice a year when the opportunity presents itself. But when it does, it’s a chance to reconnect with something that still brings him joy.
“I feel like a kid walking into a candy store,” he laughed. “It just makes me happy. And believe it or not, skating the shell actually helps me find hollow spots or imperfections in the surface. So it’s fun—but it’s useful too.”
