Chairman’s Letter As I had a phone call or two after the last issue, I realised that I’d carelessly referred to our Annual Dinner as a “lunch” in my last letter and compounded the error by not putting any time in. So, I hope to see you all at the Annual Dinner at 19:00 for 19:30 on the 14th March! Dr Christopher Boos will be Guest of Honour, as will Dr Di Bruce. I know that our rehab nurses and trainers will be coming so I’m looking forward to seeing you all there.

The committee have discussed the fact that many patients do not go through the normal rehab route and may never find out about us.

Publicity really needs to be circulated to fill this gap and we need a Publicity Officer to take this on. If anyone is interested in helping out with this we would be glad to hear from you. Currently most of our new members are introduced to PHSG after their rehab. Robin Pringle notes on Page 20 that he has been in discussions with a doctor’s surgery in Hamworthy and it is possible that a new class could start there. This could start referrals coming from that surgery and we’d like to spread the word a bit further.

The puzzle in the last issue was tackled by a few people who were delighted to have cracked it. Michael Andrew can be seen receiving the prize on page 11. There is another little teaser in this issue. No prize for it just the glory. Answers to me by email please f you’d like a mention in a roll of honour in the next magazine.

It is with regret that we report the deaths of two of our office helpers.

Joy Payne died on the 16th January. She leaves her husband Ted. Joy and Ted joined PHSG in 1999 and have been Office Helpers for as long as anyone can remember. Joy will be greatly missed. The well-attended funeral was on the 30th January at Poole Crematorium. Member Derek Ashley, also an office helper, passed away on 9th September last. Derek was trained by Betty Elsmore and they had worked together as a team for over 3 years. He leaves wife Zoe. We offer our sincere condolences.

Medicine and Cardiology News from Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust Dear Friends, So winter is almost over and the promise of spring around the corner (hopefully)! At the hospital we have gone through a lot of changes over the Christmas and New Year period which had been in the planning for months. We have re-designed general medicine and changed the ward configurations.

In summary we have closed Cranborne ward, which has allowed for the extension of the medical investigations unit and the movement of the discharge lounge, re-named the discharge facility to the area partially vacated by Cranborne. This newly designed discharge facility has 6 side rooms as well as sitting areas to allow patients in beds to move there whilst awaiting transfer home or to some other care setting. This has meant that acute beds on the wards can be freed up earlier to take sick patients from the emergency assessment unit (Ansty) and all other areas in the Hospital, as it takes from all specialties not just medicine. It is managed and staffed by trained nurses as well as the former discharge lounge staff by MIU. Avonbourne ward which had 5 medical beds, 14 Elderly care and 4 escalation beds has now become a 23 bed medical ward and the escalation beds included in the numbers and the elderly care patients moved to the newly opened Lytchett ward. Arne ward remains the same and Portland ward has increased from 10 to 12 beds in acquired brain injury, neurology and rheumatology.

This redesign has been positive to medicine as prior to this we had 58 beds and now have gained 5 making 63. All the staff on Cranborne were moved to areas in the Hospital with full consultation, many remain in medicine and no one lost their job. The positive aspect of the changes means we are focusing general medicine in 2 areas close to each other, Avonbourne and Arne ward. This will reduce the need for consultants to travel to too many wards, staffing has improved , infection control is easier due to the large number of en suite cubicles and we can focus more

on medical patients. I feel this is a really positive more as now we have general medicine in one place and not mixed with other disciplines.

The Treatment and Investigations unit we supported to open at the Royal Bournemouth on the lines of our MIU is doing very well and Sister Renshaw from Poole is over there for 6-12 months to manage it.

On a less positive note I would like to inform you that Professor Greaves whom many of you know is leaving the Hospital in the spring to live in Australia with his family. As you can imagine this is a great blow to us as he has been such a driving force for change and improvement in the 10 years he has been with us. His skills and expertise will be sorely missed as well as his friendship and the support that he has given to me personally and all the staff over this period. I am sure I speak for us all when I wish him all the best for his new life ahead with his family. On a positive note we are recruiting two new consultants as replacement and for others who are reducing their hours.

I look forward to speaking again soon and please remain healthy and look after yourselves.

Dr Christopher Boos Lateral Thoughts on Marriage Hi everyone and happy New Year.

I thought I would write about an interesting article that spotted in the Cardiology press this week, which I think may be of interest of many of you.

So, your wife or husband is annoying you and you think for a second “this marriage stuff is difficult – why did I do it?� Well off course it can be; but there appears to be definite cardio-protective effects to being married or arguably deleterious effects of remaining single.

A medical team in Finland have shown that being unmarried and living alone both apparently raise the risk of having an acute coronary syndrome (ACS) event and of dying one month or one year after the event, compared with being married or living with at least one other person, respectively. This data was gained from a very large registry study of 15330 persons in Finland covering the years from 1993 to 2002. This increased risk in those groups cut across all adult age groups.

Adjusted for age, unmarried men were 58% to 66% more likely than married men and unmarried women 60% to 65% more likely than married women to have an ACS event. Among all persons hospitalized with an ACS event, 28-day mortality was significantly and steeply higher for unmarried men and women than for married men and women. In addition, in analyses of the 35-to-64-year age group, mortality at one year was significantly higher for never-married men, at 55% than for previously married men, at 44%; it was significantly lower for married men, at 29%. Similarly, one-year mortality was significantly higher for men who lived alone, at 52% and for women who lived alone, at 45% than for men or women, respectively, who lived with at least one other person. For both living alone and being unmarried, most of the survival disadvantage at one year was related to persistently low case-fatality rates for married men and women and for households with at least two people, beginning in the prehospital phase, according to the group.

The article did not analyse the data as to whether one was happily married or not which is an important consideration. Nevertheless, the results are quite interesting.

Monthly Talks

January Talk - The Cold War The first talk of the 2013 season was on 17 January. I must admit I was a bit fearful that we would not get a good turnout due to the atrocious weather. “Oh ye of little faith”.

This first talk of the year was given by one of our members and it came about as a result of a chat at the Upton House treasure hunt in August. I just happened to a say to Alistair Allcroft that it was the week of the Air Festival and we might see the Vulcan again. He explained that “for his sins” he had worked on the V-bomber force during his service in the RAF. This prompted me to ask, “Would he give talk”. He seemed a bit reticent but said he would think about it. Later, I bumped into Alistair at another chat-stop and chanced my arm and ask if he had thought any more about a talk. He most certainly had and showed me the drafts of the presentation.

Well!

Alistair regaled us with first hand stories of that time when the world held its breath on the verge of nuclear disaster. Fantastic pictures of the stations he had served on and the aircraft he had worked on. Some images I had not seen before of the actual weapons carried. One fact that I was not aware of was that the Valiant fleet was permanently grounded due to structural degradation. Also reminding us that he had only four minutes to get the

aircraft in the air before the first wave of enemy bombs would arrive and complete annihilation. I remember those times and the “four minute warning�. As a teenager I had my own agenda as to how my last four minutes would be spent!

The talk was very well attended and I am sure that it was enjoyed by all.

Skittles Night

On 6th December, three teams of six gathered at Cobham’s (Flight Refuelling) social club for a night of skittles.

The teams were the “Dorset Dawdlers” with their captain Judith Deadman “The Heartbeats” with their captain John Cutler and my team the “Good Friends” with my wife Margaret nominated as captain.

We had asked people to get to the alley for 6:30pm ready for a 7 o’clock start and we were all ready to go, with drinks to hand, by the appointed hour. We played three rounds of skittles for each member of each team and pin setters worked hard through the evening to keep the alley ready for action.

Terry Hine was the first to knock over all of the skittles followed by Harry Bridges, each getting a score of 9 for the Heartbeats on the first round, John Cutler did the same in the final round, all in the same team. A small prize was awarded to the lady with the highest total score, Denise White with 19, John Cutler took the gentleman’s highest score prize with a total of 23. John’s Heartbeats team won the team prize with a magnificent total of 94.

After the main skittles there was a finger buffet prepared by Cobham’s catering staff which was enjoyed by all, with plenty to eat and some left over at the end. After the buffet we played ‘killer’ with each person having three lives. This went on for a considerable time, finally there were two of us left, me with 3 lives and the only other player being John Cutler with only one.

You will guess that over the next three rounds, I missed every time and John knocked over the single skittle we had come down to, every time.

Consequently, in addition to the ‘best man’ prize, and the team prize, John was awarded the magnificent silver trophy for the PHSG knockout!

Apologies to anyone who missed this as my wife and I didn’t decide to run the skittle evening until after the Autumn magazine had been distributed, so details were only circulated on David Anderson’s newsletter.

A good night was had by all and I think there is enthusiasm for another skittle night in the near future, watch this space..

Euphonium Player Retires PHSG committee member and willing workhorse George Wilkinson has decided to retire from playing in his band. At their Christmas Concert the Ringwood and Burley band’s principal Euphonium player George announced his retirement. He has been a member of the band for several years and has decided to cut down on his activities to spend more time with his family. He has not ceased playing completely and will continue with his other musical activities.

George was thanked by the Musical Director Bernard Lawson for his many years service to the band and wished him well for the future. The chairman of the band Mr. Tony Mist reiterated the comments and presented George with a cut glass bowl from the band; George’s wife Margaret who has been a keen follower and helper of the band was presented with a bouquet by the MD. Eighty four year old George started banding in 1946 at the age of eighteen; he was self-taught and his first instrument was an E-flat horn which he played for three years with Crewe West End Band in Cheshire, he then moved on to cornet with 95 Squadron ATC and Old Comrades Band which later became Crewe Co-op (North West Co-op). Sponsored by the Crewe Co-op, he was a committee member and later became principal cornet. During that period the band won many contests.

In 1959 he went to live in Jersey and joined a group again on lead cornet. This group then became the band of the island of Jersey. After about three years he moved to lead euphonium and has stayed on this instrument ever since.

Soon after this he married Margaret who was a Jersey girl. They have three married daughters who are all musical; two being professional musicians, violin, cello and piano, one daughter plays violin, oboe and piano, all of his six grandchildren are very musical and play various instruments.

George says his time playing with the Ringwood and Burley Band has been most enjoyable. He is retiring for family reasons, but still intends to keep up his playing.

PHSG Walking Group

One Year On! My thanks to Cyril and other members of the "Luncheon Club", also known as the "Walking Group" for making me welcome.

Before, the only time I got out of my car in Dorset was to play a round of golf and although I've played plenty of nice courses I now with the Walking Group see a lot of more spectacular scenery such as coastal paths, forest, down land, riverside and many other walks.

We have had our share of varied weather, only one walk was washed out, which luckily for me I couldn't make anyway as I was child-minding (it being during school holidays). I missed one other walk when I could not find the car park; I am still looking for it!

Maybe next year.

Had a few walks on my own around Worth Matravers. On one walk, I turned chicken twice: the first time was at the foot of Houns-Tout cliff steps. The later after crossing two fields I came to another with about 30 heifers in it. As I opened the gate, they all came trotting over - stand off! Them on one side, me on the other. Detour!

Before I sign off, I must give my wholehearted (excuse the pun!) thanks to my GP, the doctors, nurses and staff, at both Poole and Bournemouth hospitals for giving me this opportunity. Thanks again.

Also, a big thank you to Dianne and Norman for organising the Christmas dinner - a great success!

Membership Matters

In the Summer PHSG magazine last year, I offered a prize of a bottle of wine to whoever could guess nearest to the correct number for the last membership number allocated on or before the last day of the year. As it happens, there were no responses so we drank the wine ourselves, but I thought you may be interested to know that the last membership number of the year was 2071.

I’ve had a number of comments from people who think that their ‘spouse/partner’ details should be on the printed labels when magazines are distributed, or on the printed label on the renewal forms sent out with the Summer magazine. In fact the labels are printed one per full member and although it may be possible to include spouse/partner details, it would be quite difficult to do with the technology in use. Also, some members specify partners who join them for exercise classes, talks or even chat stops, and they often live at a different address, so that also would be difficult to deal with on the labels. Consequently, I will continue to print labels which relate to the full member as this is the recipient of the magazine and other items.

When people don’t pay their membership renewal in the summer, they are no longer members of the club and will not receive the autumn magazine, though David will normally continue to send his e-mail newsletter which includes general reminders. I normally keep them in the database until Christmas so that I don’t have to recreate the data if they renew late, but at some time I have to delete people. I was a little late with the deletions this year but I recently removed 117 members and the 50 partners who they had specified, this was a lot more than the 60 I stated in the Winter magazine, but unfortunately I had miscounted when I ran off my first check. Nevertheless, the membership of the PHSG stands at 884.

If you enjoy the ‘Word Search’ and would like to put together a list of words for the Summer magazine, it would be much appreciated.

Fifty Shades of Grey (hair)

My missus bought a paperback In Asda...... Saturday, I had a look inside the bag T'was "Fifty Shades of Grey"

Now if you knew our Doris , see, You'd know just why I cringed.

I'd been two months in traction, cos My hips and knees unhinged.

Well I just left her to it, see, And went off up to bed An hour later, she appeared Oh the sight filled me with dread!

She stood there nude. All naked, like, Bent forward quite a bit.... and Jumping back in fright I went And stood on her left tit.

In her hand she held a rope The other, held a whip!

She brandished them around a bit And then began to strip....

Doris screamed, her teeth shot out, My word. What HAD I done ?

She moaned and groaned then shouted out "Step on the OTHER one !!!"

Well for ty years or so, ago, I might have had a peek But Doris hasn't weathered well She's sixty-eight next week

Well reader, I can tell no more About what occurred that day.

Suffice to say, my dark brown hair, Turned fifty shades of grey.

Watching Doris bump and grind Couldn't be much grimmer...

And things progressed from bad to worse She toppled off her Zimmer !

Black and blue, battered too, With wanton, wild perversion, We decided that a night of sin Was scarce wor th such exer tion.

She struggled back up to her feet, A good half hour later, Put her teeth back in and said That I must dominate her !!!

Thank Heavens she has binned the book And peace reigns, like before She's head to toe in winceyette And back to back, we snore.

Practice Development Unit for Cardiology and Medicine - Quality Service Group Meeting PHSG has a voice on this group representing its members.

This exciting group, under the very capable Chairmanship of Geoffrey Walker, OBE, Matron Cardiology and Medicine, really gets things done! Positive changes are made to hospital procedures, as a result of patient feedback given to PHSG patient representatives. All PHSG members can feed back information to Poole Hospital in complete confidence about their treatment.

So if you want to say anything good or bad about your experience in Poole Cardiac Unit, or its related departments including the ambulance service, please forward your comments.

QSG Meeting on the 27th November 2012 At our latest meeting, chaired by Matron Geoffrey Walker and held at the end of November, members of the group were invited to meet staff of both the Poole Hospital and the Red Cross who are involved in the launch of a new ground breaking service (see photo below); the Red Cross Assisted Discharge service. This will give patients independence and confidence when they return home from Poole Hospital once they are medically fit to do so but may be prevented for social reasons. Patients usually prefer to return to their own homes but may not have the support from family or friends living nearby.

The project is funded by the Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust with matched funding from the Red Cross and will run as a pilot project from October 2012 to the end of June 2013. The service will operate between 8am and 10 pm 365 days a year. Patients are referred from the hospital’s Emergency department or Rapid Assessment and Consultative Evaluation (RACE) ward.

Val Horn, Poole Hospitals Matron for older people helped establish the initiative. “Some patients do not require an inpatient stay after coming to hospital and this scheme is about supporting those patients, where appropriate, to be independent and confident in their own homes,” Val said.

Such patients could more beneficially continue their recovery at home rather than in hospital. “We discussed this with the Red Cross and together created a completely new pathway for patients.”

Service coordinator Jane Hutchins from the Red Cross says “We will take patients home, do a full risk assessment of the property, looking for things like tripping hazards to make sure they are safe, make sure they have something to eat and drink and allay any other fears they may have. It’s really like a good neighbour scheme providing the kind of support you would give to your own family.” So far more than 50 patients have been helped under the scheme with very positive feedback.

From the hospitals point of view it helps to improve the flow of patients through the hospital, unblocks beds and prevents people waiting on a ward unnecessarily when they would rather be recovering in their own home environment.

Dr Isobel Smart, the President of Dorset Red Cross and also a member of the Quality Service Group, said, “I am thrilled at the progress made. I know it has been a lot of hard work but the results are fantastic”. She added that the Red Cross were proud to be working with Poole General Hospital Trust for the benefit of patients and looked forward to extending their involvement. She also said more volunteers were required and appealed to anyone to come forward and work with this worthwhile task.

Know your Trainers

Paula Trowbridge has been with PHSG for approximately ten years and is responsible for our classes at the Images Gymnasium in Lower Parkstone. This was yet another class which was set up on our behalf by Lesley before she introduced Paula to the Group.

Paula grew up in Poole and was a student at Parkstone Grammar where she obtained 9 O Levels and 2 A Levels. She was employed locally at BDH (Merck) in the export department and studied whilst there for a BA in Business Studies. Paula left work to bring up her two boys Ryan and Dominic. The boys, now 20 and 18, are both at University. Ryan is studying Pharmacology (drug development) and Dominic is reading English with American studies.

In the meantime Paula took up her long term ambition to train as a fitness instructor. She became qualified in Exercise to Music, Gymnastic and Personal Instruction and Training. Over the years she has added Pulse spinning, ASA Aquafit, Circuits, BACPR and Body control Pilates. All in all a jack of all trades !

And in 2011, with the boys safely in higher education, Paula has her first passport and is making up for lost time. She has already visited New York, Florida, Egypt, Rome, Sorrento, Nice and Cyprus. She and John are set to visit Egypt and Florida again this year.

Paula says that her main business these days is Pilates and she is the principal of Poole Bay Pilates. She operates 14 Pilates classes, 2 classes for PHSG, 6 fitness classes and a number of 1-2-1 fitness sessions. We can see that Paula has a pretty full life but she tries to run every other day and she loves gardening when the weather permits.

I’m sure the our members at Images appreciate Paula’s endeavors on our behalf.

PHSG to open Exercise Sessions in Hamworthy?

Quite some years ago we attempted to open a new exercise venue in the Hamworthy/Upton area.

Unfortunately we could not find suitable premises in that area but were able to open up at Lytchett Minster Sports Centre where facilities are only available in the evenings. We have been contacted by a GP from one of the practices in the area. He had been handed a copy of a PHSG magazine and felt that our organization could be useful for his cardiac patients. Between us we now believe we have found suitable premises and it is now just a matter of getting one of our BACPR trainers aboard. Hopefully we will be organized and in action by the time the next magazine is due.

We know from our Database that there are existing members in the Hamworthy area and I would like to hear from those who may wish to help kick start this new venue. Please contact me at 01202 884250.

British Red Cross‌CPR Courses We have only just heard about the rescue of the baby from the harbour in Somerset where the dock master jumped bravely into the water, turned over the pram and had baby and buggy hauled out to the quay.

There on the quay a young lady used CPR to resuscitate the child before the paramedics arrived and he was whisked away to hospital. The baby survived thanks to these two people and then to the professionals who took over.

By the time this magazine is goes to press PHSG will have run three CPR courses in conjunction with our friends in the British Red Cross.

There will therefore be another 30 or so of us capable of carrying out these procedures should we be called upon to do so.

John Offer may well organize further such courses later in the year should there be a demand. We are sure that none of us would wish to be unable to help loved ones, friends, neighbours etc should such help be necessary. Do please give CPR training some thought. Please contact John or our Office to put your name forward for a future course.

While walking along the pavement in front of his church, our minister heard the intoning of a prayer that nearly made his collar wilt.

His 5-year-old son and his playmates had found a dead robin. Feeling that proper burial should be performed, they had secured a small box and cotton wadding, then dug a hole and made ready for the disposal of the deceased.

The minister's son was chosen to say the appropriate prayers and with sonorous dignity intoned his version of what he thought his father always said: 'Glory be unto the Faaaather, and unto the Sooonnn, and into the hole he goooes.'

Experience would be helpful but not required as the job can be picked up as you go along. You will gain the gratitude of the committee and membership.

Dear Editor I would like to say a big thank you to the people who organised the quiz event today (20th December). The food was very nice. The quiz was hard but very entertaining and different!

We met a couple we hadn't met before and managed joint second! Thank you all very much. Look forward to the next one. Does it need to be Christmas time?!

This years fun day at Canford was planned to be a little more sedate than the previous “running about and falling over” playing parlour games. A quiz. Well you got a quiz!

I understand that it might have been a tad difficult. I must apologise, it was intended to be a bit of a poser. Unfortunately I was not there to help you through it with a few useful hints and clues.

The night before the quiz I was rushed to Bournemouth Eye Hospital with a torn retina. It sounds worse than it was. Not painful but very worrying. Since then I have undergone two sessions of laser treatment to repair the tear.

Hopeful all OK now. So apologies over I look forward to next years Xmas Quiz, and yes it will make you think!

The Green Thing!

Checking out at our local supermarket, the young cashier suggested to the older woman that she should bring her own grocery bags because plastic bags weren't good for the environment.

The woman apologized and explained, "We didn't have this green thing back in my earlier days."

The clerk responded, "That's our problem today. Your generation did not care enough to save our environment for future generations." "You're right" the woman replied, "our generation didn't have the green thing in its day.

Back then, we returned milk bottles, pop bottles and beer bottles to the shop. The shop sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So they really were re cycled. But we didn't have the green thing back in our day.

We walked up stairs, because we didn't have an escalator in every store and office building. We walked to the grocers and didn't climb into a 200-horsepower machine every time we had to go two blocks. But she was right. We didn't have the green thing in our day.

Back then, we washed the baby's nappies because we didn't have the throw-away kind. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gobbling machine burning up 2000 watts; wind and solar power really did dry our clothes back in our early days. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing. But that young lady is right. We didn't have the green thing back in our day.

Back then, we had one TV (if we were very lucky/well off), or one radio, in the house; not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief (anyone remember them?), not a screen the size of Yorkshire. In the kitchen, we blended and stirred by hand because we didn't have electric machines to do everything for us.

When we packaged a fragile item to send in the post, we used wadded up old newspapers to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap. Back then, we didn't fire up an engine and burn petrol just to cut the lawn. We used a push mower that ran on human power. We exercised by working so we didn't need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity.

But she's right. We didn't have the green thing back then.

When we were thirsty we drank water from a tap instead of drinking from a plastic bottle of water shipped from the other side of the world. We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and we replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull. But we didn't have the green thing back then.

Back then, people took the bus and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their mums into a 24-hour taxi service. We had one electrical socket in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And we didn't need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest fish and chip shop.

But isn't it sad the current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were just because we didn't have the green thing back then?" She finished only to note that the young cashier had long ago lost the thread and was now texting her colleague at the next check-out.

“Standing behind the curtain my knees were weak, my heart was pounding, I felt sick…”

In March 2010, Maureen (Mo) Bounds had a heart attack. Her heart stopped for nearly a minute. The superb response by the paramedics and Poole and Bournemouth hospitals put Mo on the road to recovery.

But those words above are not about her heart attack!

After rehab, Mo joined the Poole Heart Support Group in the July. Husband John went along too. They have been going twice a week since. Exercising at Canford School under the supervision of Lesley Bradshaw, Mo and John couldn’t help noticing Lesley was always singing and dancing away whilst everyone else exercised! They learned that Lesley is a member of the Wimborne Musical Theatre Society (WMTS) and after lots of little chats between and during exercises, Mo and John joined.

Their first show was in December last year at the Wimborne Tivoli. Called Let Me Entertain You, rehearsals for the show started in July. Mo and John and of course Lesley, (who can keep her down?) were active members of the chorus.

“We had to sing and dance - sometimes at the same time! It was great fun and we loved it . . . except those first few seconds before the curtain went up!” said Mo. Mo and John are rehearsing now for the Cole Porter musical Anything Goes at the Tivoli in late June. “It has added a new dimension to our lives. It helps with our fitness and general well-being.” added Mo. “There are no divas at the WMTS . . . well except John that is!”

One of our members tells us that he suffers from anxiety and depression. He was referred by his GP to a service called Gateway.

You will be able to access the details on the Web on the Poole Council site at http://www.boroughofpoole.com/health-and-social-care/mentalhealth/gateway-team/ Our member was so enamoured with the treatment he got and continues to get that he hoped we would publicise details to our members some of whom may have the similar anxiety problems.

An Award for a Member PHSG Member Henry Bartlett is also Chairman of the Diabetes UK West Dorset Group. He was pleased recently to receive an award for his contribution to diabetes care, receiving the Diabetes Voices Award at a recent volunteering conference held at Taunton.

Henry has achieved a great deal for Diabetes UK since he started volunteering, ensuring that a specialist nurse was reappointed and arranging education days for people living with diabetes in West Dorset. Henry went forward to the national Inspire Awards at the House of Lords in December.

Congratulations to Henry from the PHSG.

I thought you would all like to hear about this. I had a phone call recently from Dawn who is the receptionist from the Health centre where we use an office. She said she had a phone call from the Canford Heath Asda.

Apparently they had a wallet handed in about a week ago and the lady at Asda was a little concerned because there was quite a lot of money in it. She looked through the wallet and found a PHSG membership card for the person it belonged to.

I looked the member up on the Database and gave him a call. He said he had been in several shops in Poole and let the police know, but all to no avail. He was more concerned about a photo of his grandson than anything else!

I passed on the lady's name and telephone number at Asda, and I believe he was going to drive over there straightaway.

What a lovely outcome I thought!

WHAT TO DO IF YOU BECOME UNWELL Medical help and advice is available if you become unwell when your GP surgery is closed.

You should: Dial 999 or go to A & E as soon as possible if you are worried about the sudden onset of new symptoms or have suffered a serious Injury or illness.

A & E departments are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. They are for a critical or life threatening situation, for example chest pain, suspected heart attack, severe breathing difficulties, severe loss of blood, loss of consciousness, deep wounds and suspected broken bones. They are not for minor injuries or health problems, nor an alternative to seeing your GP or for a ‘second opinion’ if you have already seen your GP. Call the Dorset Out of Hours Medical Service on 0845 600 10 13 if you are unwell but not facing a life-threatening emergency and you think you cannot wait until your GP surgery opens.

Go to an NHS Walk-In Centre or Minor Injuries Unit with a minor injury or illness. Find your nearest one by calling NHS Direct on 0845 46 47.

You can also call NHS Direct on 0845 46 47 if you are feeling unwell and are unsure what to do, or need information about finding a pharmacist, dentist or other service.
