Introduction This Document focuses on the improved understanding and development of an existing Business Model in a skill led unorganized Business sector. National Account Statistics (NAS) defines ―All unincorporated enterprises and household industries which are not regulated by any acts of the Parliament and which do not maintain any annual reports presenting the profit and the loss and balance sheets are classified as unorganized".

There are different terminologies used so interchangeably to signify the unorganized sector like informal sector, informal economy, and even informal labour which often highlights the most affected part of the sector, namely, the labour. ―Informal labour is a labour whose use is not governed either by state regulations or by collective agreements between workers and employers.‖ Informal sector has, in different instances, been viewed as people engaged in urban small scale enterprises, as self employment, as people engaged in ―traditional activities‖, as wholly unskilled labour, and as labour whose use is not subject to any rules or norms. But none of this has any sound conceptual or empirical foundation. There is little reason to think that informal sector must be confined to ‗traditional‘ and ‗modern‘ activities.

We do not need to assume that informal sector is unskilled; only need to recognize that its skills are acquired outside the formal education system.

Brief of Project Objective The aim of the project is to understand strategically think of developing a small business through design thinking and strategizing to have leapfrog result with the real life example.

This Design Management project will provide an opportunity to the students to apply their understanding so far in the field to develop an unorganized business and employ strategic design advantage for better success.

The other objective is to apply the related tools and techniques to achieve desired results in the selected business arena .

Identify interest areas, sector, individual, real life scenario for the informal / unorganized business sector .

Critically examine the issues with the sector at large and with individual in particular .

Establish the focus area, touch points, opportunity mapping based on the insight generated .

Work upon developing creative sustainable business solution for the given specific case and searching scenario for probable application .

Prototype the solution suggested and supplement it with all the required ground work ready to be implement .

Implementing the suggestion with pilot testing .

Document the project suggesting pragmatic way to strategically scaling up the business in phases over a period of time and correlate the same with envisaged results .

Characteristics small-scale industries

Major characteristics listed through secondary sources which include previous research reports, newspaper, magazine , journal content and government statistics .

Labour intensive: Small-scale industries are fairly labour-intensive. They provide an economic solution by creating employment opportunities in urban and rural areas at a relatively low cost of capital investment.



Flexibility: Small-scale industries are flexible in their operation. They adopt quickly to various factors that play a large part in daily management. Their flexibility makes them best suited to constantly changing environment.



One-man show: A small-scale unit is generally a one-man show. It is mostly set up by individuals. .

As they are their own boss, the decision making process is fast and at times more innovative.



Use of indigenous raw materials: Small-scale industries use indigenous raw materials and promote intermediate and capital goods. They contribute to faster balanced economic growth in a transitional economy through decentralisation and dispersal of industries in the local areas.



Localised operation: Small-scale industries generally restrict their operation to local areas in order to meet the local and regional demands of the people. They cannot enlarge their business activities due to limited resources.



Lesser gestation period: Gestation period is the period after which the return or investment starts.

It is the time period between setting the units and commencement of production. Small-scale industries usually have a lesser gestation period than large industries. This helps the entrepreneur to earn after a short period of time. Capital will not be blocked for a longer period.



Educational level: The educational level of the employees of small industries is normally low or moderate. Hardly there is any need of specialised knowledge and skill to operate and manage the SSI.



Profit motive: The owners of small industries are too much profit conscious. They always try to keep high margins in their pricing. This is one of the reason for which the unit may lead to closure.

There were four master craftmen in Pethapur , Bhikhubhai Prajapati , Maneklal Gajjar , Poptlal Gajjar Govindlal H. Prajapati . Govindlal H. Prajapati is the sole survivor now . He is 66 years old and started learning this art the age of 12 years from his father . This craft is in his family business .

He believes in the principle of ―udaar bahavana” , i.e learn to give .

This business is craft based , which is my area of interest so it gave added advantage to me .

He and his son Satish G .Prajapati is very enthusiastic and willing to expand this business .

He was ready to give his precious time out of his busy schedule for this project .

Goal of the project

Mr Govindlal Prajapati master craft men (wood block ) maker generates revenue with only one source wood block making . The business is operated round the year without any leave. The business is a family run business and it was established 126 years back in the same geographical area where it exists now.

The need for this project arise due to the fact that even after such a long time in the business, the overall reputation, revenue generation and the awareness is not up to the expected mark. The business would eventually die out as the inflation and the revenue generated are inversely proportional at the current scenario. Through this project I want to save this craft and expand Mr Govindlal G. Prajapati business .

Evolution of block makers at Pethapur History of Pethapur has witnessed not only the sawdust emerging from carpenter‘s workshop but also enriched by anecdotes that date back centuries . For Instance , as master craftsman , Maneklal Gajjar in his writing in Calico Museum of Textile , Ahmadabad , there came time when women got tried of wearing their plains saris everyday . Modern day embellishment were not in vogue during those times . So they dipped their bangles , rings etc . Into colours and etched their images on their saris . Their husband , who were carpenters by profession , saw this and thought of carving out wood in different patterns , saw this thought of carving out wood in different patterns . These woods blocks were used by their wives for printing images on their saris . This incident is believed to have given birth to block making in Pethapur, is a hub of wooden blocks makers , who supply customized blocks to the centres of block printing . Wood block making has been a popular profession among the inhabitants of Pethapur for about 300 years .

According to the 1961 census conducted by the Government of India , the craft was developed and specialised by Gajjar suthar artisans who were traditionally carpenters . The document also mentions that the craft might have been adopted from iran at the time of the Mughal rule in India ( as Mughals bought Persian influence in India ) and concentrated in Sikhpur in Sindh from where it spread to Gujarat . This is in keeping with the theory that the skill of block printed fabrics travelled from Sindh to the modern India states of Rajasthan , Gujarat and western Madhya Pradesh .

Tool : Personal interview First day in Satish G. house It was my first day at an artisan‘s house . I was excited yet nervous about the fact that what would happen if Satish G . family weren't as welcoming or friendly as I hoped them to be . But all my small doubts vanished when I entered his house with big hall were he had a mall work station . where he makes hand carved wooden blocks . His family welcomed me , as if I were a part of his family . His ready to help nature and his family‘s kind gesture made me feel like home .

As I started chatting up with him , I discovered that block making as a craft has been running in his family from last two generations . His father Govindlal G . Prajapati learned this art of block making at the age of 12 now he is 66 years old . He is practicing this art from last 56 years ; Satish G . Practicing this art from age of 20 . He doesn't want to teach this art to his children . Satiesh G elder daughter Pinki is 18 years old and pursuing engineering ; younger son Sahil 13 years old is in class 8th . “Acording to Satish G jetna mahnath hai uthna pisa nahi” .I am doing this work because I don't know any other work . Government ―bhi kuch help nahi ki abhitak log attay hai pohto kich ker chaly jata hai‘‘ .

He says I have lots of orders but no one is there who can work under me , nobody wants to learn this this . This art requires lot of practice and patience to become a master level craftman and not everyone can learn this art , when I made my first block , I damaged at 48 different places and my father said you cannot learn this .I spent two days to repair that block , now I am an expert in this art .

If you want to learn I can teach you this craft . We have very good reputation in market and our blocks are good for approximately 5000 m of printing with 0% error . I personally check all my blocks and so my all my vendors are very happy with this kind of quality . My father is very good at it but due to age he makes only special and expensive blocks for his old vendors from Bagh (Madheyapradesh) . From last 5 years he has not made any block due to cataract problem in his eyes . He went for cataract surgery recently so will start his work again . You can see his designs on papers ; he makes beautiful designs which are very unique . He devoted his whole life to this art and made more than 1 lakh designs . If you want to know anything regarding this craft he let you know in detail .

Tool : Oral History Type of interaction: LEARN | LOOK | ASK | IMAGINE Subject : Govindala H. Prajapati Pethapur is one of the India's oldest leading centers for the making of wood blocks used for textile printing . According to Govindlal Prajapati , Pethapur has been a center for Carpentry for centuries . The carpentry realized the potential for making blocks for printing since then it has been the main source of wooden blocks . I have been making this block from the age of 12 , working under a late master craftsman Hitalal Gangaram . There were about 300 craftsmen during the youth but the growth of modern occupation opportunisms many family gave up this craft . Today there are just 12 craftsmen in Pethapur who practice this art , 7 of them learned this art from me . They use to work in my workshop and helped me for more than 5 years . Now they have started their own business . I encourage people to learn this art . He told me during his childhood Pethapur was centre for block printing and much of it was exported Indonesia . This tradition unfortunately and gradually dyeing over the years Govindlal today runs his workshop with his son Satish ― Apart from my son , I also encouraged my nephews to learn this art of carving wooden blocks . My nephew Mukash Prajapati , is one of the country's finest wood block makers .He runs his workshop with his sons , Advesh and Pragesh all three‖ .

Pethapur is now national hub for wood blocks used for textiles printing . The four to five workshop in the village supply carved wooden blocks across the country .

Insight Craft is going through difficult time , only 12 people left in Pethapur who are practicing this craft .

Govindalal G wants to teach and educate people about this art to sustain this art ,

Process of block making The creating a block or ‗ Biba‘ is a time consuming and labour intensive process which demand great skill and trained workers , not only carving but all the process preceding it are of equal importance to achieve desired result . The wooden block has to be handled with care throughout the process of block making .

The acquiring raw material and cutting of wood in desired size The wood used in the block is teak or locally known as sag or sagwan . The specific wood is used due to its fine dense grain and easy to chisel property which enables the block carved to make fine intricate design . Also these trees grown in the regions of south Gujarat like Mansa, khamnaht and valsad which are favourable to craft's location .

The wood for this purpose is acquired either from saw mills or buying large log of wood collectively and then sized them down into desirable size of blocks also called ‘ kalpari‘ . At a time , the artisans accumulate enough stock for 6 to 7 months as they also need to be dried . Satish G make approximately 10 to 15blocks a month . Many times wooden beams of old house of pols and others parts of the house where teak is used are ritualized . Later the log are cut down into unsalable small size of approximately 6‖ to 7‖ squares or rectangle with 2‖ to 3‖ thickness . When the logs are brought buy the artisans , there is a risk of getting a hollow inside the trunk . It spells bad news for the artisan as it makes that portion unusable .

Current teak price are approximately 120/kg .

Finishing of the wood piece The wood might contain moisture which is undesirable for carving . It will lead to distortion of the block hence making carving difficult . So the Kapla are left to dry stacked in room for about 6 to 7 month . One a block is dried , it is levelled and ready for carving . The surface to be carved is made 180 degree perfect flat plane . A foot rule is used to check the level . Wherever the surface is bumped it is removed using a tool called ‗ Randho‘ .

This process is manually done and it takes about half to 1 hour to get smooth plain .

Then for making surface more smooth a 9‘‘ to 12‘‘ bigger file is rubbered flat on the wooden piece . This process is manually done and it takes about half and hour to get smooth plain . To make it perfect , this side of block is rubbed on the ‗karo pather‘ . This makes the wood surface as flat as a glass . Glass like finish implies in a perfectly smooth surface . After this white poster colour is applied for good visibility while tracing the motifs or design onto treated surface

Transferring the design onto the wooden piece The block is combination of Rekh(outline) , data ( colour filling ) and Gad (background ) , blocks of up to 4—7 colours are made . Separate block is required for each distinct colour in the design , a saperate tracing must be made for each and transferred to its own special block . Tracing is important for precision in the block making process ; its done in 3 steps first laying out the grid ; second , tracing the motif according to the grid and the last marking the width of desired relief .

The propose of lying the grid for the repeat motif block assure equal distance and a seamlessly joined block‘s design . The length and width of motif and kalpa is calculated and the grid is mapped out accordingly .

The paper on which the design is printed is placed on the block and the width the help of takna and the Hathori the shape is traced on the surface with short broken lines . After removing paper , the design is finalized by making them into sharp lines with a takana , once the motifs are in place , a compass like metal tool with two pointed ends is used to make are supposed to be relief , these portions are then tinted with colour pencils like blue , red etc , to differentiate the relief work from the rest

The actual carving of design Once the drawing is done , the carving of the block begins with drilling holes of equal depth around the motif .

This is done in portions that are supposed to be removed . For drilling holes traditional tools used according to the space . The shardi is darling tool available in different size and is used according to the space between the relief work . A broad takna is used to break the bridge between the relief work . A broad thik takna is used to break the bridge between the holes . The rest of the wood around the tinted portions are removed using smaller and varied shaped takna according to the curves and corners of the motif . The depth of the relief ia about 1/2‖ .

For batik blocks the depth of the relief is 3/4‘‘ . The wooden now left in between the motif is chiselled out .

Satish G. Prajapati is not well educated and studied till matriculation from Gujarati medium . He cannot read and write English properly .

Govindlal G. Prajapati is too old to help in this business and only take very special and limited orders .

No knowledge of computer skills and internet .

No disposable income to invest .

Satish G cannot invest time for learning a new art or exploring a new domain .

Don‘t want to involve any more family member into this business and don't want to teach this art to their children .

Saish G works alone and he can make up to 15 blocks per month .

While doing observation and analysis keeping in mind his limitations ;it was realized that in order to increase the revenue and to develop his business following things can be done: 

Increasing the productivity and thus earning through selling volumes.



Increase visibility to market himself as recognized / known craftsman to increase business

Sell the existing product with a higher margin by adding the value to the existing product



Increase his awareness about this sector



Increase his local vendor list also to reduce transportation cost



Step to approach Government to save this craft and give them national level recognition

So the Solutions discovered were decided keeping in mind the above factors.

The Solutions were: 

Creating a Database Management of the Products to add value.



Creating proper delivery system for product delivery to add value



Better Working studio with proper tools to increase productivity



To keep a helper for works other than manufacturing to increase productivity.



To explore options to sell the existing products at higher value to earn good returns by increasing visibility and to market himself as a recognized /known craftsman

1. Suggested Database Management : coding system

At present Satish G . Prajapati works for a design according to order and moves on to next project without maintaining proper database he only keep print of deign to show other vendors in future for next order .

I thought this step can add value for a regular vendors and costumers . What if his designs and dimensions are documented and kept for future reference. This Documentation can also be used to order on phone, because while studying the his business an insight was generated which stated ― mostly after 6 months his most of design repeat ― .

Its difficult for him to hold and do carving on small block less then or equal to 5‖ size , as he need to hold small piece of block between knee joints which is very difficult and uneasy position for him There is huge market for small blocks also with good margin but he use to refuse it due to difficulty in making

In long run it will help him even he can carve very small left out woods and margin in small blocks margins are high due low raw material cost and intricate carving so into total it will lead to his increase revenue

3. Suggested to keep helper The third proposed solution is hiring a helper to do all the other works that are not related to manufacturing.

The works of the helper would include: Sourcing of wood Cutting of wood Finishing and Smoothening of wood Transferring the design onto wooden piece Printing design on paper for data base record / maintaining file According to observation I got to know out of 30 days in month almost 12 days he spend time in paring wooden blocks ready for carving which not required so much of skills If this time is reduced by the helper after training period , productivity can be increased Currently he makes 15 blocks in a month which can be increased to 25 pieces

COST BENEFIT ANALYSIS: As his productivity is now increased by 66% approx.

His average monthly sales (before helper): 15 blocks Now his average monthly sales: 25 blocks Therefore, increase in income: 10 * 1200 = Rs 12000/Salary of helper = approx. Rs 5000 per month The net extra savings: (7500-5000) = Rs. 7000/-month

4 .Suggested him to install light system Will doing shadowing activity it was realised that there is no flexibility of time as proper lightning is required to have accurate work , some time he works under 100 w bulb for long time which is not good for his eyes and if there is power cut there is no back up .

So I suggested to install pendant lightning system with CFL above his workstation table .

Conclusion The Project basically taught me two major things: Interaction.

Time management I learned that interaction is the best tool to gain insights. The more you interact with a free mind, the more probable you are to dig out appropriate and necessary insights.

Applying the skills learned in a class room on a practical front was enriching and exciting.

While working practically, you tend to explore and gain more information about the subject.

Time management is the act or process of planning and exercising conscious control over the amount of time spent on specific activities .

As Peter Turla said , ―Living your life without a plan is like watching television with someone else holding the remote control.‖ I took the project as my job and duty rather than a classroom project and this approach helped me a lot and gave a sense of responsibility.

I am very happy that my effort has helped Mr. Satish G prajapati and Govindlala Prajaparti in a way or the other thus giving me the, so called Job Satisfaction.
