HELMET STANDARDS Protective headgear must conform with one of the current approved safety standards for 2017 Helmet Manufacturers generally recommend replacing your helmet every 5 years or so. If you have a hard-blow impact accident while wearing your helmet, immediately replace it for a new model. There may be damage to the helmet that is not visible to the naked eye.

It is the rider’s responsibility to wear the approved standard. The club/organising committee’s role is to take reasonable steps to ensure compliance with the rules by communicating the list of approved standards to their members/competitors when becoming a member or entering a competition.

BehindtheScenes KEV WALSH

Involved for 34 years A little about Kev. I have lived in the Toowoomba district all my life. My parents were both off the land and I learnt to ride by going to my uncles and aunts properties each school holidays. I am married with 3 adult children and 10 grandchildren, one of whom is an angel.

I have a fairly impressive equine lineage.

My Grandfather, Cornelius Brosnan was one of the first two instructors at the Downs Pony Club in 1959. My great Uncle James Copley, won a Warwick gold cup for campdrafting. To achieve this he rode his horse from what is now Somerset Dam, (stopping at what you know as Greenvale stud for the night, my grandparents farm) to Warwick to compete, and home again, approx.

200km each way. My uncle Jim Brosnan was the youngest person to represent Qld in Campdrafting at the Sydney Royal at the age of 17.

I have been very lucky with my work.

As an engineer I have been fortunate enough to travel to the USA and Japan.

I represented the Qld Govt on a trade mission to the Philippines. I worked on an Australian Aid project in the North of China in 1991, the team assisted the Chinese with the design and building of a large grain depot. Whilst this was a very challenging project it was a great learning experience to see farmers delivering grain in anything from carts drawn by cows, tractors the size of ride-on mowers through to trucks.

Furthermore, share some light on their history within PCQ and their roles.

Role within PCAQ: President Your history and what brought you to the position you are in?

At WTPC & Zone 4, I have been Treasurer, Vice President and President. I was given Life Membership of WTPC in 2002. I was Zone delegate for many years, before I became State VP. In 2010 I was asked to stand for the position of State VP, as there were only 4 nominations there was no election in that year. In 2013 I was given PCQ Life Membership. I am a Level C instructor as well as a School level Corse builder and judge.

What are some things people wouldn’t know about you?

I am building a hot rod, I hope to have it finished by the end of 2017.

I am a member of the Brisbane Broncos (couldn’t be a member of any other club as Wayne Bennett is my mother’s cousin) Are you a member of a Pony Club?

Transferred from Toowoomba Pony Club to West Toowoomba in 1986 and I am still a member of WTPC. What are 2 things you couldn’t go without at work?

Electricity (if there is a power failure we stop) And my computer and phone.

I have been involved in the running of a number of State championships and I was on the committee for the 2007 & the upcoming 2017 PCA Nationals.

How long you have been involved in PCQ? Been involved with PCQ for 34 years.

Best quality about Pony Club?

Pony Club is an absolutely brilliant Youth organisation. Not only do we teach children to ride, we also teach them to look after their animal friend. Our members can’t just come home from training and throw their footy boots under the bed till the weekend, they have to make sure that their horse is fed and watered in between. This teaches them responsibility and commitment. Along the way our members make a lot of friends throughout the state and even inter-state.

Lily is a young and up and coming rider within Pony Club Queensland. She is a member of the Bundaberg Horse and Pony Club and has been very successful representing Zone 7.

Bundaberg Horse & Pony Club Zone 7 Age? 10yrs At what age did you start/join pony club?

I was 6 yrs old when I joined Pony Club.

Best memory at Pony Club?

That’s a tough one! I have many great memories from PC but most of them involve my friends, not only from my club but from all over QLD.

Introduce us to your horse/horses.

My love and passion for horses and Show Jumping all started with my 12hh Chestnut riding pony Balena Christmas Time (Chrissy). She stole my heart and taught me everything she knew, especially to HOLD ON! However, due to Chrissy’s age and my ongoing passion for Show Jumping, Ooah Duchess De Bloom (Abbey) was brought into my life in January 2016.

Abbey is a 12.2hh riding pony who share my love for jumping. We quickly formed a partnership and haven’t looked back. I have recently acquired a new pony into my team, Centre Stage Tickle Me. She is a Welsh B 13hh 3yr old pony. I am looking forward to our journey together.

Describe your most spectacular fall?

Whilst training on Abbey with one of my coaches, John Robertson we were approaching an 80cm oxer. We hit a long spot which made Abbey’s jump HUGE. I lost my balance and did a full forward flip off to the side and onto my back. Thankfully I had my vest on and was able to get back on and go again.

What has been your greatest horse riding achievement?

To date my greatest and proudest moment is winning State Combined Training on Abbey. Our first winning RUG together! We train hard so this was a fantastic reward.

Best quality about Pony Club?

For me it’s all the friends I have made from around QLD and NSW. It’s so cool to know that no matter where I’m competing I will always have a friend there to have fun with.

Most important thing you have learnt being around horses?

No matter how well you think you know them. They are still a ‘flight’ animal, so great care is needed around them. It is also important to learn about their nature so you can better ‘read’ them.

What certificates have you gained in Pony Club?

I have my D certificate and am currently working towards my D+ certificate.

Where do you see pony club taking you in the future?

I have big dreams and goals! Hopefully, with the guidance of my coaches John Robertson, Bekky Jenkins and Gemma Creighton (who I must say a BIG thankyou to) want to attend the Nationals and have the opportunity to compete overseas in Show Jumping.

What are 2 things you couldn’t go without at a competition?

The two most important things for at a competition are my trusted horse Abbey (naturally).

AND MY MUM, who is always by my side giving me confidence and wisdom.

Warwick Pony Club Congratulations to the Australian Show Ribbons Club of the Month, Warwick Pony Club.

A little about Warwick...

Zone & how many clubs within your zone?

Warwick Pony Club is part of Zone 21 which has 6 Clubs in it.

Club Colours?

Warwick is Green & Gold. Bottle green vest and saddle cloth with gold trim, green and gold strip tie with a white shirt. Zone colours are Lime Green & Royal Blue

Warwick Pony Club will receive a $100 voucher from Australian Show Ribbons.

Tell me about your rally days?

Our rally days are held at the Warwick Showgrounds(home grounds), held once a month on Sundays. The rally commences at 8.30am with gear check, sunscreen and then riders are put When did your club establish? into groups according to their jumping ability and age. Lessons are Warwick is currently celebrating their 50th around 1hr 10mins and groups rotate on an organised program over 4 Anniversary! The club commenced in 1966. or 5 lessons in the day and plan to be finished by 4.30pm. The upcoming events sometimes determine the things we cover or outside instructors we get. But we cover flat/dressage, SJ or Equitation, Mtg, Sporting, XC (with our portables jumps we purchased!), Horsemanship & Lectures, CD Polox, Polo, Vaulting, Troop Drill, Team Penning plus so much more over the year.

Riders can only ride one horse at rally days to encourage good all-round horse and riders. We try to use as many of our club instructors but organise at least one outside instructor for each rally day.

What is your clubs claim to fame?

Warwick has a great group of riders, instructors and support crew! We also run the canteen for the Warwick Rodeo & Campdraft and are famous for the amazing meals that are served.

Have any riders from your club gone on to be famous or successful?

Warwick has had some great riders come through the club and is sure to see more in the future.

Shiranne ‘Possum’ Richards, Robert Goodwin & David Goodwin were all shortlisted for the Olympics and currently having success in SJ. We have also had 3 riders represent Australia in the Inter Pacific Exchange; Shiranne ‘Possum’ Richards, Claire Bondfield & Tammy Bondfield. Rod Howard spent his early days at WPC; he is a wonderful vet and is also on the CIP. Trent & Adrian Brickley went on to be very successful internationally in Endurance. Michael Maher also was an active member of the club and is now doing very well in National Saddle Bronc Riding. We have had successful hack riders win at Royals & Grand Nationals including Alexia Fraser & Tammy Bondfield.

Tammy also acquired her A Certificate this year.

This year WPC has gained 6x Individual Gold Medals, 1x Silver Medals(1xMtg Team), 4x Bronze Medals(1xMtg Team) over the three States in 2016. Warwick Riders have also gained Overall Horse & Rider Combination, and Overall Dressage Rider at Maryborough States, plus Highest JE Percentage at Gatton and 3rd in Zone Teams at Oakey.

How many events do you run a year?

We run a Gymkhana, C.draft, Team Penning, Dr, CT, SJ & Eq. We also host for the Regional Instructor School and Exams. Also have been helping out to raise funds for the Show by running T-Shirt Hack Days, SJ Evenings & Open Sports Days. We also run a annual camp.

What has been your clubs greatest achievement?

We made it to 50years!

Our club is very strong and it shows at every competition we go to from gymkhana’s to state championships where we won the Zone Teams In 2008 Jumping Equitation and also 2013 in the Formal Gymkhana all with riders from Warwick. We have also hosted three State Championships including the 2001 Dressage, CT & ODE, 2003 SJ & JE and 2013 CD, FG, Sporting & MTG. How do you fundraise for your club?

The club members works extremely hard to fundraise. Every year we do 3days in the canteen for the Warwick Show, 7days working in the canteen over the Warwick Rodeo & Campdraft.

We also do raffles at the events held during the year.

Best quality about your club?

Warwick is a small club, but mighty in effort. We cater for all levels of riders and horses. We create friendships that last a lifetime!

ZONE TEAMS SHOWJUMPING CHALLENGE REPORT 28TH, 29TH & 30TH OCTOBER, 2016 This year’s Zone Teams Showjumping Challenge saw the event move from the usual location in Caboolture to the Nambour Showgrounds, hosted by Zone 6 and Zone 26. Record nominations were received leading up to the event with Zones 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 18, 20, 26 & 27 represented by enthusiastic, well-mannered riders.

The change in format due to the new height classes proved popular with strong nominations across all groups. In total 51 teams and 201 horse/rider combinations were represented and ready to compete.

The event kicked off as usual with the State of Origin competition run in the indoor arena on Friday evening. 23 State of Origin teams contested the event with only two teams riding double clear.

At the start of competition on Saturday all teams were punctual, walking courses at 7am with their team managers, with the first riders on course for the AM5 by 7.30am. As in previous years, the event ran over three rings and we thank our course builders Geoff Langbecker, Ken Jenson and Barry Brunke for beautifully designed courses and judges Keith Gray, Kerry Henderson, John Golchert and Lyndal Roos.

The AM5 event ran smoothly, finishing around lunchtime Saturday and allowing time for a rebuild for the Scurry event. Both the Scurry and the AM5 events ran without incident, with the teams events finished for the day by 3pm.

Saturday evening brought with it some food and entertainment which we hope was enjoyed by all. Lyn Teagan and her canteen staff worked hard all weekend and served a lovely meal selection to approximately 182 people before the commencement of the Puissance event.

The Puissance appears to be a great success with 20 riders nominated, the vast majority of those never having competed in a Puissance before. In order to provide some further entertainment for the evening we had organised a Calcutta, splitting the twenty riders into seven teams. While there was a bit of a technical glitch with the microphone, we feel that this Calcutta provided some exciting entertainment and seemed well received. Congratulations to the winner of the Puissance Matt Wray and his lovely horse Alpha Activity.

Sunday dawned clear and fine, with riders once again punctually ready to walk courses at 7am for a 7.30am start. The AM6 event ran smoothly and without incident, with competition complete by lunchtime on Sunday.

Mounted presentation was held in the indoor arena and what a sight to behold! The arena was filled to capacity with wellpresented horses, proud riders, looking smart in their Zone uniforms and carrying Zone banners. Mounted presentation was completed without incident with the event closing at around 2.30pm on Sunday afternoon.

The organizing committee would like to take this opportunity to thank the many people who helped to bring this event together.

John Warren took on the role of Chief Steward and Kev Walsh the role of Judge in Chief and we thank both of them for their time and efforts over the weekend as they were kept busy.

A massive thanks to our generous sponsors Sandale Saddlery, Brigalow Country and Mitavite without whom these events could not run.

So many people chipped in to help out over the weekend, so our thanks to the pencillers, timekeepers, gearcheckers, gate & rail stewards and first aid officers. Thanks also to the riders and parents who were so respectful, punctual and competed with such great sportsmanship.

MYPONYCLUB CLUB AND MEMBERS ONLINE PORTAL

MYPONYCLUB TRAINING WITH GARY BRYCE

Innisfail Pony Club was a hive of activity on Sunday 13th November. It was day two of the Far Northern Region Seminar, which included a dressage clinic with Kay Paulsen. This ran in conjunction with a zone meeting and My Pony Club training with Gary Bryce.

It was the best turn out for a Zone Meeting we had seen in ages!

Zone 18 was fortunate to have Gary come and run a general overview session on My Pony Club and then followed up with a hands-on segment for those who wanted more detailed information. There were 20 participants from clubs right across the Zone, some making up to a 230km round trip to attend. The Zone was fortunate to have received some grant money that allowed travel allowance to be paid to those attending the training. For a Zone as far reaching as ours it was very welcome.

The My Pony Club database was somewhat of a mystery for the majority of those attending but Gary’s relaxed and informative style had everyone engaged and the questions and answers flowed back and forth. The mystery was easily put to rest and everyone gained confidence in navigating the site and were very impressed with what it has to offer.

Feedback from those attending was very positive, both in the way Gary presented the information as well as just how much information the database contains and what can be achieved by using it.

Secretary’s Report Really pleased with the number of nominations. It was quite warm both days. One Incident with a rider coming off in the practice jump area. Attended to by a paramedic on the grounds and then also joined by the St. Johns First Aid officer.
