CHAIRMANS WELCOME

As Chairman of Pontyclun Football Club it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to our “Annual Gentlemen’s Evening” which has become a well established and successful part of our social and fund raising activities. This is the 15th year and a special thank you to Tyrone, for his continued hard work in organising such an enjoyable evening.

Firstly, I would like to express my sincere appreciation of my colleagues on the Club’s management committee, who have not only supported the team’s within the football club but have also worked tirelessly to ensure we have both the foundations and achievable plans in place to further improve the facilities at the Ivor Park. Which could include an additional 150 seater stand and solar panels to help manage our running utility costs.

The football club motto “Gorau chwarae, cyd chwarae” translated as “the best play, is team play”, which was adopted by the Football Association of Wales. From this connection, we were chosen by the National Football Museum of Wales to take part in a short documentary. Back in February and March, various club members and teams were filmed, the finished film should be available shortly on various social media channels.

I hope you all enjoy this evening’s event, with monies raised going towards improving the facilities down at the Ivor Park and again we will be making a donation to our chosen charity, which this year is “2 Wish”.

Thank you once again for all your support. Enjoy the evening and have a safe journey home.

PONTYCLUN F.C. A BRIEF HISTORY

Pontyclun Football Club has been part of the South Wales football scene for over a century having been founded way back in 1896. It is not certain where the club played its earliest home games - it may have been Talygarn - but there is documentary evidence that Ivor Park became the home ground in 1920 when Wyndham Damer Clark, formerly of Talygarn House, gave the club preferential use of the land as a football field.

In the early years, the club was a member of the Bridgend & District League but immediately after World War I joined the Cardiff & District League. In 1922 the club was admitted to the Football Association of Wales - one of the few amateur clubs to achieve such status.

In 1968 the club was admitted to the Welsh Football League, finishing 1968-69 in 13th place in Division 2. At the same time the club continued to run senior teams in both the Rhondda and Pontypridd Leagues.

In season 1979-80 the club were runners-up to Lake United to win promotion to Division 1 and after relegation in 1981-82 played in Division 2 again until the formation of the League of Wales in 1992, the club being restructured into Division 3. The club won promotion in the first season in this division though as runners up behind Treowen Stars in 1992-93 until relegation in 1997-98.

However, the proudest moment in the club’s long history came at the end of the 2002-03 season when on an emotional May afternoon, the club won the Welsh League Division 3 title, piping Skewen Athletic by just one goal! In the same season the Reserves were runners-up in the Welsh League Reserve East Division.

The club played in Division 2 until relegation in 2007-08 and in 2011-12 the club suffered great disappointment when they finished at the foot of Division 3 and were relegated from the Welsh Football League after 44 consecutive seasons.

The club subsequently joined the South Wales Amateur League and after two seasons of consolidation the 2014-15 campaign saw the club finish in a very creditable fourth place in the league & reach the final of the W. John Owen Cup.

2016-17 was a time for celebration for everyone connected with Pontyclun as the club secured the championship of the South Wales Alliance League by 10 points resulting in the club regaining its place in the Welsh Football League.

After spending the next three seasons establishing itself once again in the Welsh League the club were delighted to join Ardal Southern League for 2021-22, finishing in third place and just missing out on promotion on the last day of the season in the South West Division and reaching the Quarter Finals of the FAW Amateur Trophy.

The club has every reason to look forward to the future with much optimism.

The impressive changing room facility is now complete, substantial ground improvements have been made to comply with Tier 3 ground criteria, while junior football is thriving with a significant number of home-grown youngsters breaking through at senior level

TONIGHT’S COMPERE AND COMEDIAN JED STONE

Jed Stone is without doubt the most versatile event host and comedian in the U.K. today.

Jed has appeared many times on T.V. and Radio, including Sky T.V.’s “THE NEW COMEDIANS”, Central T.V.’s “JOKER IN THE PACK” with Marti Caine, “POT OF GOLD” with Des O’Connor, “MY KINDA PEOPLE” with Michael Barrymore, “SKY SPORTS” and even “MATCH OF THE DAY”! As well as many credits on B.B.C. Radio Merseyside and BBC Radio Lancashire.

He has recently performed and interviewed live on major U.K. tours with such Sporting Mega stars as Pele, Mike Tyson, Sir Kenny Dalglish, Tyson Fury, Steven Gerrard, Evander Holyfield, Anthony Joshua, Ricky Hatton, Paul Gascoigne, Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran, Carl Froch and Larry Holmes, and hundreds more.

He is the top promoters 1st choice as comedy event host when the greats of World sport or entertainment need interviewing in front of a live audience.

He also won BBC 2 T.V.’s “The Weakest Link”, and left presenter Anne Robinson speechless for once, as well as having the honour of performing at Dragon’s Den Star Hilary Devey’s wedding at her beautiful home.

His energy and enthusiasm combined with lightening quick ad-libs and topical bang up to date material ensure that every function is always a huge success, and make Jed one of the most sought after comedians in the country.

Jed is unique in that he can turn his hand to anything in comedy; this led to him appearing at The Labour Party Conference in Blackpool with Tony Blair and Bill Clinton in attendance. He can personalize his material especially for the client, which is why he hired regularly by some of the U.K.’s biggest blue chip corporate companies including The Royal Bank Of Scotland, British Telecom, Phones4U, 2BM, Volvo Trucks U.K., to name but a few. He also works for Leeds United as a match day host.

You only get one chance to book the right event host and comedian for your function; to Jed every show is a major event.

PERRY GROVES

Perry Groves is one of the most recognisable former Arsenal players there is. He began his footballing career as a young schoolboy, when he had a trial for Wolverhampton Wanderers FC back in 1981. Immediately spotting the talent in which Groves possessed, Colchester United offered him a position as an apprentice. One year later, Groves turned professional and went on to play 404 Professional games along the way. Groves, who was now getting more and more recognised, then signed for Arsenal for a fee of £50,000 in 1986 and was the first signing under new manager George Graham.

In his first season at Arsenal, Groves helped set up Charlie Nicholas for the winning goal in the 1987 League Cup final, dribbling past three Liverpool players before laying the ball off for the winner. This was a victorious and prestigious moment for Groves and just one of the many brilliant highlights of his footballing career.

Noted for his enthusiasm and hard work, Groves started the majority of Arsenal games during the 1987-88 season, helping Arsenal to reach another League Cup Final the following season, by scoring the only goal in the semifinal against Everton.

TONIGHT’S GUEST SPEAKER

Increasing violence on the terraces and especially the events of Brussels in 1985, very nearly led him to give up playing until he realised it would be simply surrendering to the mindless violence of hooligans.

Hillsborough followed in 1989 and Bruce was the first p layer to be aware of the Leppings Lane end troubles and was first to offer and call for assistance.

League and Cup again in 1990 (the last time the club did so) and Bruce again was one of the heroes of the side.

Bruce eventually moved to Southampton in 1994 and stayed until 1996. After leaving Southampton, Bruce attended two FIFA Coca Cola Fertura One and Two in 1996 and 1998 respectively along with gaining invaluable coaching experience with the Zimbabwe national side.

Groves also played regularly in the famous 1988-89 season and helped produce the goal that allowed Arsenal to go on and win the league. Arsenal also won the title the season after this, in which Groves played a huge part in the team’s success in the season. Following this, Groves moved to Southampton for a staggering £750,000 and continued to develop as a professional football player before a serious injury cut his playing days short.

Groves has worked with many footballing organisations including Sky Sports, Radio 5 Live and BT Sport. He has also attended Arsenal Legends charity matches and London Masters matches to which he has been honoured by football fans of all clubs. Perry Groves is one of the most level headed, disciplined football speakers there is and makes a brilliant motivational speaker for all manner of different events.

Still regarded as a footballing legend by Arsenal, Perry Groves makes a brilliant after dinner speaker with his motivational and inspirational stories. Groves shares his most personal experiences and triumphs, whilst interacting with the audience to ensure the event is thoroughly enjoyed by all.

PONTYCLUN VETERANS

We were delighted to confirm that we entered four separate league squads playing football on alternative weeks starting in September 2022 running through to May 2023.

These teams who are in the over 40’s, 50’s, 55’s and 60’s Leagues and are competing on all fronts this season.

Over the years the club has proudly recruited and managed hundreds of players both locally and from across the breadth of South Wales.

SUCCESS STORY

We have enjoyed many successes over the years winning the League & numerous Cup successes over the years, the most recent was the over 45’s League & Cup Double victory in 2015 and the Over 60’s League Winners 2021/22 season.

We also have a number of players who are currently and numerous players who have previously represented Wales Veterans Internationally at all age levels. Some of the games our players have played in were held at the Millennium / Principality Stadium in Cardiff and St Georges Park in England.

PONTYCLUN VETERANS

CURRENT VETERANS MANAGEMENT STRUCTURE

Pete Banks is the over 40’s player manager, Will Ryan is the over 50’s player manager, Ian Buckland is the over 55’s player manager and Robbie Ryan who is the Veterans Section Secretary also player manages the over 60’s with Leighton Gates as his assistant manager.

PITCHES / MATCH DAY VENUES

We play locally on the Y Pant School 3G pitch subject to availability, Ivor Park, Talbot Park in Talbot Green and then return to the Pontyclun FC Clubhouse for refreshments.

LEAGUE FIXTURE SCHEDULE

In general, the teams will play opposite each other on alternative weeks on a home & away basis with the other 10/12 teams in their respective age group/leagues. The Winners will receive the trophy and medals at the annual ceremony which has been held at numerous prestigious locations over the years. There is also the Annual “League Cup” for the respective age group which is played via the agreed format for the season.

OVER 60’s CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON

The over 60’s commenced the season in September 2022 as defending Champions firmly putting Pontyclun Veterans as a force within the Wales Veterans Football League formation and with a squad of 20 players.

Whilst the season began on a positive note with an away win to Newport the squad resumed the high standard set last season and apart from a shock home defeat to Newport we were unbeaten for the rest of the league campaign to run out worthy back to back League Champions.

There were some heroic efforts on the way with the crucial 4-1 away win at the well fancied champions elect Barry Town Vets and late 1-0 winner away at Swansea which galvanised the squad, raised their confidence and the collective effort set the benchmark for us going forward to retain our crown.

The well-established Barry Town Vets were the favourites for the league & Cup double this season, but in our league encounters the two away games at Jenner Park was a 2-2 draw with 10 men in ja followed 4 weeks later in February by a thumping 4-1 away victory which clearly demonstrated our collective never say die attitude in the defence of our title.

We duly retained our League Champions crown at the end of March 2023 with two games to play.

OVER 60’s LEAGUE CUP CAMPAIGN

The over 60’s also managed a good cup run to reach the League Cup Semi Final to be played on the 7th May 2023 at the time of going to print for this article and are hoping to reach the final in the 21st of May.

PONTYCLUN YOUTH SECTION

FAW YOUTH TEAM

This season following a couple of successful years of our Youth Section we made the decision to step up a level and enter a youth team into the FAW Youth League whilst also continuing to complete in the SWFA league. The aim was to integrate the entire youth set up to serve the two leagues where, outside of a core FAW squad, players could get the opportunity to play in both the FAW and SWFA leagues gaining experience at a high footballing level plus getting good competitive game time in the SWFA matches.

The FAW youth set out this season to be competitive, to progress further than the first round of the FAW Youth Cup and for the experiences playing at this higher level. With a Pre-season packed with training sessions and competitive friendly games under their belts the team entered the season full of optimism and they have not disappointed and have most certainly had those experiences for which we had hoped.

The FAW team are looking at a top four finish in the league or higher, achieved a quarter final place in the FAW Youth cup and awaiting to play in the quarter final of the FAW League Youth Cup against league winners Trefelin BGC. A fantastic season already achieved in the FAW Youth League, full of outstanding performances!

A massive achievement, experience and highlight of the season for the team and the club was a trip up north for a FAW cup tie against Connah’s Quay Nomads Development Youth Team, this team had not lost at home in 3 years and unbeaten in 2 years and last seasons Welsh Champions. The boys were well organised, pressed as a unit and battled to give an outstanding performance and an exciting game which ended Pontyclun 4 -Connah’s Quay 2, a well-deserved win to put us into a quarter final against Penybont FC u19’s.

The experiences, bonds and memories made on this weekend will always be with these boys!! Fantastic family, friend and club support at the quarter final at the SDM Glass Stadium saw a very strong and experienced Penybont U19’s advance to the semifinal with a 2-0 win on the day. The boys did themselves and the club proud!

SWFA YOUTH TEAM

The SWFA youth team has a mix of U18 and U17 players, their goal this season was to ensure they were competitive in all matches and this has certainly been the case! The season started strong leading to aspirations of a top half of the table finish, loses four games on the bouce mid season means they are now looking at a mid table finish which is still a great season and the boys have gained tremendous experience of how tough the youth leagues can be. Mid season following the loss of their recognised goalkeeper one of the players, Evan Pennington, stepped up offering to put the gloves on and stand between the posts for the remainder of the season, an outstanding personal team ethic, putting the team before himself. Well done Evan! Both Youth teams have a number of players that have been with the club since the u5s Mini-kickers was formed in 2009, this shows fantastic dedication and commitment to our club!!

DEVELOPMENT

We have also seen many youth players having opportunities both within the Senior 1st team and the reserve team this season with four FAW youth players making 1st team appearances plus fifteen youth players regularly appearing for the reserves throughout the season.

SPONSORSHIP

We have seen many youth players having opportunities within the Senior 1st team and the reserve team this season with four FAW youth players making 1st team appearances plus fifteen youth players regularly appearing for the reserves throughout the season.

Richard would also like to make a special mention and thanks to Andy Wall, Gwion Kennard, Dave Burgess, Jason Griffiths and Dave Keane for their help and support providing competitive youth football this season to over 45 players

PONTYCLUN MINI AND JUNIOR SECTION

U5s TO U11s

Once again it’s been a busy season on and off the field for the mini and junior sections at the club. This season seen the return of our U5s and u6s sections starting out with some taster sessions then going from strength to strength with good numbers in both sections. The u6s started playing in the Terv league in January with some fantastic football on display, big thanks to the new u5s and u6s coaches who have joined the club.

We’ve seen a lot of changes in the mini section this season due to coaches and players leaving to join local academies. The transitional period has been difficult but once again our volunteer coaches have been outstanding to ensure children are able to play grassroots football.

This season has seen a new 10s and u11s girls section set up. The response has been overwhelming with over 30 players turning up every week, more often than not in the pouring rain!!! Players are improving weekly with many representing RCT girls u11s county squad. being cancelled the festival

U12s TO U16s

Where do we start with the junior section... we could start with Dion but that would probably take up at least 10 pages!!!

U12s girls have once again set the standard for all players in the club showing great attitude and progression again. The girls train hard every week and always work tirelessly in every game. The U12s girls have been together for a few years now and the hard work is beginning to show off pushing some of the top girls teams in the South Wales region all the way. Well done to Pete and Adam, keep up the good work.

Our u12s boys teams have both had a brilliant start to competitive football with our u12s Yellows being crowned league champions with our u12s Blues assisting them with a win at the end of the season against a local rival. U12s yellow are still in the cup so hopefully they will do the double, keep up the high standards and

U12s Blue have been outstanding from start to finish and are a credit to the club they football they play. The way the players and coaches conduct themselves on and off the field is a pleasure to see and I’ve no doubt this team will be very successful going forward, well done all.

U13s blues and yellows have had a mixed season but hopefully going forward they will be more settled. Big thanks to Mike and Jon for trying to look after Dion!!!

Our u14s have at times this season been unplayable and were very unlucky to miss out on a league title, lots of positives going forward. It looks unlikely that the season will be completed due to a backlog of fixtures but lots to work on for next season.

U15s Yellows and U15s Blues were always going to have a difficult season being placed into the u16s Terv league this season. Coupled with the fact many players left club under the one club rule and many players being involved in district rugby has proved difficult to raise two teams on a Saturday. U15 blues have managed to just about to complete the season and look to build for next season. U15s Yellows have over achieved this season considering the squad has been depleted on many occasions, despite this they have had some outstanding results currently, the only league team to beat our 16s Team who look likely to win the league. Big shout out to Gary and Wayne for keeping players together and pulling off some great results.

Last but not least the u16s have a few games left to secure the league title and just missed out on a cup final. Dave and Colin have a done a great job galvanising the squad after a number of players left this season again due to the one club rule. A number of new players joined the squad seeing them very close to finishing the league as champions which would be a fantastic end to the season.

Once again a huge thank you to all coaches who have volunteered again this season showing what a great community club we are.

We wish the senior section the best of luck with the push for promotion!!! Uppaclun

A big think you to Owen Edwards for his role as Junior Secretary the second most stressful job in the junior section.

Finally, a Huge thank you to Paul Williams (Treasurer) and Kerenza Moulton (Safeguarding officer) who are retiring from the junior section this season. The amount of hard work you both put in behind the scenes is unbelievable and we can’t thank you enough for what you’ve done for the junior section. It will be incredibly hard to replace the both of you but enjoy the free time with the family.

Thanks The chair. Matthew

PONTYCLUN FC GENTS EVE

FRIDAY JUNE 24TH 2022

The return of our annual fundraising evening took place on Friday 24th June. The evening returned after a two year COVID break. We were not let down once again from what was a fantastic evening both for the club and our supporters. Over 200 people attended to listen to the stories of the wonderful Bruce Grobblelaar who was simply fantastic and extremely hospitable.

The feedback has been incredible and we also thank the Caterers Cresta, the U16s who were waiters, Joleen and the team at Pontyclun Athletic Club, the compere and committee in organising the night. The profit raised will once again be invested on our ground improvements and only recently we were able to upgrade our CCTV along with the support of the Junior Section in order to protect the facilities that unfortunately has been let down by some locals lately. Thank you also to Stephen Hughes of JMG Plumbing for his donation of £260 to our charity Velindre.
