JD CYMRU SOUTH R29 / MONDAY 1ST APRIL 2024 ADMISSION £5 / KICK OFF 2:30PM

I would like to give warm welcome to our visitors as well as their supporters to Parc Ynysderw on this Bank Holiday Monday and I hope you have had a safe journey.

With 5 games left in the season it is clear that we have a lot of work to do but even in defeat on Friday we played some excellent football but lacked the clinical finishing that the top clubs have. It was very pleasing though to see 3 players who came through our Pontardawe Town set up playing for Llanelli with two of the lads have played at Welsh Premier Level. It shows how good a pathway we at Pontardawe Town have.

We now have 3 games left here at Parc Ynysderw, including today’s game, so make sure you come in big numbers to get behind the lads as I know they really do appreciate your support

I would like to thank everyone who has come out to support us today, whether you are returning fans or new to the Pontardawe Town journey. This club is full of talent and hope you stick with us throughout the season no matter what the circumstances, as the players feed off your positive energy and support! Cheers and Good Luck, Jason

teens:)unite supports those in their teens and early 20's who are fighting cancer.

There are 2,555 new cases of cancer diagnosed in teenagers and young adults in the UK each year. We provide those aged 13-24 with the social, emotional, and physical support that is vital to their recovery. They can come together with others their age who understand what they’re going through, and remember who they are as a person, not just a cancer patient.

The effects of cancer can be long-lasting, which is why our support is too. Whether a young person is coming to terms with a recent diagnosis, undergoing treatment or years into remission, we’re here for them every step of the way.

Through our free activities and residential stays, we provide opportunities to help them rebuild their lives or, at the very least, live with their diagnosis in the best possible way.

At a time when it can feel like there’s so much they can’t do, we’re here to show them what they can do, without the ‘c’ word holding them back.

Activities and Events

Our free activities and events take place regularly both face-to-face and online, so no matter where a young person lives, whether they’re at home or in hospital, they can benefit from our support.

Residential Stays

Having cancer is tough, but it shouldn’t be lonely. Our over 18’s residential stays bring together around 20 young people for an unforgettable break away from home, where they can spend valuable time with others in a similar situation.

Parents and Siblings Support

Cancer doesn’t just affect the person diagnosed, but those closest to them. We organise monthly events specifically for parents and siblings of the young people we support, so they too, can benefit from spending time with others in a similar situation, where they have a safe space to share their thoughts, hopes and fears.

WELCOME TO PARC YNYSDERW EVERYONE

Welcome to Parc Ynysderw for this JD Cymru South game and a warm welcome to everyone associated with Cwmbran Celtic Welcome also to our Match Officials who, once again, have been forced to travel long distances today.

We tried to get an early kick off today but it wasn’t granted and whilst we understand that our opponents were concerned about this we have been impacted here at the club by poor fixture allocation for most of this season. Many of our home fixtures have clashed with Swansea City and, with the utmost respect for today’s opponents, we have not been granted a home local derby on any of the bank holidays whilst other local clubs have.

CLUB SECRETARY

So the FAW team, despite agreeing that our request was a positive idea and within the rules, subsequently declined an early kick off because it was not in the interest of the league. So grabbing a few extra spectators who then will travel to watch Swansea City wasn’t deemed in the interest of the league?

Can you sense my disappointment? …. Adding also that I am a QPR fan and had a ticket for the game that I cannot go to now !!!!!

That’s my rant over and I wish both teams well today. We had a difficult day on Friday at Llanelli but played some good football which I hope the lads take in to today’s game

Please remember our fundraising platform Support My Team which is aimed at continued to improving our facilities. What we as a club have achieved since moving here in 2015 has been amazing but we dream of new changing rooms, a clubhouse and floodlights so there is a long way to go. Keep an eye out for the details (including information in this programme later)

Thank you to our new First Team sponsors The Platinum Room Ltd and Vesopa UK for the support they are giving us and also thank you Bevan & Buckland LLP who have continued their support for our website and other social media accounts

Good luck to both sides and the officials today and we will see you all at Pontardawe Rugby Club after the game. Enjoy the game and make sure you sample one of our Burgers or have a Cuppa in the Café …. Cheers All ….. Gary The Sec.

GARY THOMAS

Garry Taylor : First Team Manager

Garry succeeded Andrew Stokes before last season and he certainly continued the success we had under Stokesy. In a really difficult league he took the team through our first season in the JD Cymru South. We finished an excellent 9th in the table and had a great run in the Welsh Cup. We are really excited about the brand of football Garry is developing here at Parc Ynysderw,

Steve Berry : Assistant Manager

We welcome back Steve as our Assistant Manager / Player and, having previously played for the club in our promotion year, we know how good a central defender he is as well as showing up in midfield. A top player at this level.

Joe Clarke : Coach

Joe joins us from Trefelin BGC in a coaching role but just may be persuaded to get those playing boots on. A top player at this level and a great addition to the club

Mark Smith : Goalkeeping Coach

Mark joins the First Team from Ammanford AFC following his recent work with our Academy. A great coach and a real character we are pleased to welcome to the club

Claire Parker : Sports Therapist & First Aider

Claire is in her third season here and continues to impress everyone with her skills and knowledge. She has become a key member of Garry’s team and keeps the lads fit and match ready

A Message From The Gaffer : Garry

I would like to extend a warm welcome to everyone and look forward to the challenge our visitors will present us with in this fixture today.

After a positive result on a terrible surface, and in poor weather, at Llantwit Major we travelled to Llanelli to face a side full of talent and despite matching them all across the park we ended up losing heavily which is so frustrating but proves at this level mistakes cost you dearly

We now have a quick turnaround here against Cwmbran Celtic and I hope the weather gods are good to us so that the game can go ahead. We don’t know yet when we are playing Caerau Ely so can’t afford to add another postponement to the list.

It is going to be a busy month and we have 5 massive games ahead of us. So we need your support at all times so thanks to all of you who have supported us, work so hard for us and sponsored us. If there is anyone else out there who can help with sponsorship then contact Gary our Sec

We cannot do any of this with out you. ...Enjoy your visit and enjoy the game … cheers !

MY GREEN VALLEY — the green pitch pledge

My Green Valley have rolled out another Quick Pick Station, this time to ourselves at Pontardawe Town AFC

He are club secretary, Gary, and Bob Woodford who is the groundsman and junior treasurer, accepting the station on behalf of the club.

These stations are designed to be rolled out during games or training sessions, for a designated person to ensure the pitch is clean and tidy after use.

We really hope these will be put to good use in keeping our fields and pitches green, clean and usable for all!

DEVELOPMENT

The lads hosted Barry Town United yesterday losing 3-0 at Parc Ynysderw having lost to Merthyr Town 1-0 on the 24th March

Next Sunday they are away at Carmarthen Town and have 6 further fixtures to play in a long season.

As the teams are playing each other 3 times we are desperately trying to arrange the outstanding games so keep an eye on our website for more updates in the coming weeks.

FAW YOUTH

Unfortunately due to player availability the lads were not able to play fixtures recently due to International Call Ups, Development games and the Easter Holidays

The lats face Goytre United on Wednesday 3rd

The lads currently sit 9th in the table out of 12 teams which is a good position for this young side in their first year at youth

Keep an eye on the Academy Twitter Feed @pontyacademyfc for up to date news

Hello and welcome to a new season

Congratulations to Garry Taylor and his team on keeping us in the JD Cymru South by focussing on and winning the last few games of the season. Also congratulations to Bob, Nick and the rest of the team for the wonderful job carried out on the football pitch ready for this coming season

Finally welcome to all the new coaches and new players here at Pontardawe Town. Have a great season and wear the Badge with pride

Thanks To Peter Matthews for Sponsoring Our First Aid This Season

FAW ACCREDITATION UPDATE

After great work by everyone at the club we are very pleased to be able to announce that the club has achieved, again, PLATINUM level accreditation which is the highest level achievable. We are so proud to be showing our commitment to developing and raising standards within junior football here at Pontardawe Town FC

FUTURE PLANS UPDATE : 29/12/2023

Update 29/12 : Our planning application is progressing well as we await Coal Board and Flooding reports. Exciting times ahead so please read on and get involved

Since moving to Parc Ynysderw in the 2015 season we have come a very long way. Through hard work, lots of fundraising and the generosity of many people, who have given time and money, we have a ground we can be very proud of.

We started with a field and from that field we now have a Tier 2 standard stadium but now that we have reached that level we now have to look at maintenance and further development. From a maintenance perspective it has always been difficult as the drive to improve stadiums by the FAW doesn’t leave time or money for that essential maintenance that we need

Now that we have reached Tier 2 our next aim is to replace the demountable changing rooms with a new , modern and permanent structure behind the dugouts and

roughly at the halfway line. This new building will house changing rooms (including both male and female officials changing rooms), medical room, toilets, a club room,, kitchen and committee room.

We are now liaising with Neath Port Talbot and The Fields in Trust to obtain planning permission which will put us in a position to go for grants and to commence a range of fundraising events.

It is exciting times here at Pontardawe Town and we would always welcome the support and advice of anyone who has experience in such a venture. If you can help then please contact the club through Jason Dykes (Chairman), Gary Thomas (Secretary) or email us at info@pontardawetownafc.co.uk

PLAYER PROFILES 2023 / 2024 SEASON

FILIP LISCZYK (GK) ; Filip joined us from AFC Glais in the 2022 / 2023 season and proved himself straight away at this level. A great shot stopper and real character around the dressing room

NATHANIEL OSBORNE (GK) : A fantastic prospect from our Academy Nathaniel has broken into the first team squad this season and definitely is a star for the future

IWAN BATCUP (D) : Iwan had a fantastic 2022 / 2023 at all levels here at Pontardawe Town whilst also winning many caps for Wales Schools. An exciting attacking left back who is also as comfortable at left wing

PONTARDAWE TOWN FC HISTORY

Although the present club was founded in 1947, football in Pontardawe certainly stretches back over 100 years, into the closing years of the 19th Century, when a Pontardawe club, run by industrialist CF Gilbertson, was among the members of the earliest Swansea League, and won the championship in 1899-1900. The club went on to join the Swansea & District League in the early 1900s, playing familiar names like Swansea Town, Morriston, Skewen and Clydach, as well as long forgotten ones such as Mond Nickel, York Place and Sketty. But honors were not forthcoming, and the club disbanded at the outbreak of the Second World War.

Reformed as Pontardawe Athletic in 1947, the club entered the Welsh League in 1948 -49, playing in Division 2 (West). The first few post war years brought reasonable success at this level and in 1960-61 the club won the championship with 28 wins out of 32 league games. However, relegation came swiftly from Division 1 in 1961-62, Ponty finishing 19th out of 20 to go back down to Division 2 (West) with Milford United. The club failed to bounce back the following season with Milford pipping Ponty by 4 points. For 1964-65 the Welsh League restructured and Ponty spent several seasons in Division 1 until relegation to Division 2 in 1978-79.

A period of comparative success followed in the early 1980s, with successive promotions as runners up in 1980-81 and 1981-82 behind Trelewis and Brecon Corinthians respectively taking the club back to the top-flight of the Welsh League. 1981-82 also brought success in the Welsh Cup with Dixie McHale's team reaching the fourth round, beating Maesteg Park (1-0) & Cardiff Corinthians (1-0) before losing at home 5-1 to Wrexham, containing Dai Davies, Joey Jones & Dixie McNeil.

Now competing in the Premier Division, 1982-83 saw Pontardawe lift the West Wales Senior Cup and finish 13th in the league, however another restructuring saw Ponty lack a ground adequate for the Welsh League's new ‘National Division’ and they were relegated back into the middle division. Ponty went into decline again, slipping back to the third level of the Welsh League by the mid-1980s, quietly remaining there for over a decade.

In 1994-95 season, the club won the Division 3 championship, while 1997-98 the club also won the Division 2 league title to gain promotion to Division 1. Now adopting the Town name, Ponty came agonizingly close to winning Division 1 in 2001-02, losing out by a point to Ton Pentre. 2003-04 brought relegation however but this was short lived though as the club won Division 2 again in 2004-05.

For the next ten years the club played in Division 1 before relegation to Division 2 at the end of the 2014-15. Ponty also went close to League Cup success over this period, but on three occasions lost in the final to Goytre United (2005), Penrhiwceiber Rangers (2006) and AFC Porth (2014).

The club relocated to Parc Ynysderw in 2015 which is a ground now dedicated to the club and the committee has invested time and money to bring the ground to Tier 2 standard. Pontardawe Town has the foundation to further develop with both our Junior and Academy sections doing outstanding work. In addition, we have a thriving Ladies Section, our Autism Academy and are developing links with Walking Football in the community.
