PoMoArts 2024 Summer Program Guide

ABOUT US PROGRAM POLICIES

The Port Moody Arts Centre Society is a community-based arts organization in Port Moody, a cultural hub for arts and education in the City of the Arts. As a not-for-profit, we offer accessible programs and arts experiences to people of all ages, backgrounds, and experiences. We offer arts education classes, workshops, camps, and lessons, as well as a contemporary art gallery with free admission to the public.

Access and Comfort at our Art Centre

Accessible Washrooms

We do not have washrooms on our main floor. There is a lift that can be used instead of stairs to access our washrooms. None of our washrooms have electronic door opening functions. The closest fully accessible washroom is located at the Kyle Recreation Centre, across the parking lot.

Irritants

While PoMoArts strives to be a nut free facility, we cannot guarantee this. Students should not bring sandwiches, granola bars or any other food items containing nuts to PoMoArts. Students will be asked to dispose of nut products if found on the premises.

Due to health concerns that arise from exposure to scented products, PoMoArts has a scent sensitive environment for all employees and visitors. Staff members, volunteers, and visitors are asked to not wear strong colognes and perfumes.

Program Changes

Instructors, locations, dates, times, or program content may change at the discretion of PoMoArts. In case of significant changes to any program, PoMoArts staff will inform all registered students by email. Information on our online registration system is the most up-to-date, compared to all printed materials. Some programs and classes may have specific requirements and policies (eg. Ceramics Studio) that are shared with the students before they start their first class. Please contact our Customer Service team if you have any questions, at info@pomoarts.ca or 604931-2008.

Program Cancellation

PoMoArts will cancel classes that do not meet minimum enrollment requirements. Our Customer Service team will notify students a minimum of seven (7) days prior to the first day of the cancelled class. Students enrolled in cancelled classes will receive an automatic refund.

In the event an Instructor is ill or otherwise unavailable:

PoMoArts will provide a substitute instructor, rather than cancel the program. When a substitute instructor cannot be confirmed, a pro-rated refund will be provided to all students enrolled in the program. No refunds or make-up classes will be granted for class(es) missed by the student for reasons including, illness, scheduling conflicts, vacation and/or technical difficulties.

Program Supplies

Supplies are included for all Kids’ Classes, all camps, all art intensives, and all workshops. For weekly Teen & Adult Classes, the cost of supplies may either be included in the class fee or, for some classes, students will be responsible for purchasing their own supplies as specified in the program description. Please refer to the individual program descriptions for more details.

Age

Most of our programs are agespecific. Students must be of the required age, or close to, by the start date of the class. Any age exemption requests will be addressed on a case-bycase basis by PoMoArts staff. In some cases, written permission from a parent or guardian may be required.

Attendance

Only registered program participants can attend a class, workshop or camp at PoMoArts. Instructors do not have the ability to register students. Late registrations are made at the discretion of PoMoArts staff in consultation with the instructor and if approved will go through the Customer Service Team.

Child Drop-Off & Pick-Up

At PoMoArts, the safety and well-being of all children participating in our programs is our priority. To ensure their security, children aged 12 and under are not permitted to leave the PoMoArts premises without being accompanied by an authorized adult.

An authorized adult is defined as a parent, legal guardian, or designated adult listed on the child’s registration form or officially approved by the parent or legal guardian. In order to designate another adult to pick up a child, the parent or legal guardian must call the Customer Service team at 604-931-2008.

PoMoArts staff reserve the right to verify the identity of any individual picking up a child aged 12 and under by requesting photo identification.

Behavioural

Expectations and Management

PoMoArts uses the following principles to set and manage behavioural expectations:

ARTIST Behaviour in the Studio:

Always be kind

Respect yourself & others by appreciating difference

Take time to give praise to others (fill each other’s buckets)

Include others and follow instructions

Safe creative space is non-judgmental and accepting

Try your best!

If a child has difficulty meeting our behavioural expectations, the following steps will be taken:

1. Verbal Warning — The instructor will verbally intervene to help the child understand the impact their disruptive or unsafe behaviour is having on others and/or classroom safety.

2. Time Out — If the behaviour continues, the child will be given a time out outside of the classroom (usually by the front desk), supervised by a volunteer or other staff member. *At pickup, after the program session, the parent/guardian will be notified of the incident and will be asked to review the behavioural guidelines with their child.

3. Parent/Guardian Pick-Up — If the disruptive or unsafe behaviour continues, the parent/guardian will be contacted and asked to pick up their child immediately. No refunds, credits or make-up classes will be granted.

4. Student Dismissal — A participant may be dismissed if their disprutive or unsafe behaviour  continues in class. Dismissal will take effect only after consultation with the parent/guardian, instructor and Program Manager. No refunds or credits will be granted.

We encourage families to discuss with staff, instructors, or the Arts Program Manager if they have any questions or concerns that may arise regarding their experience at PoMoArts. If a problem arises, we aim to resolve disputes and conflicts calmly and fairly.
