As a company, Polyvine is working towards minimising our impact on the environment by reducing the carbon footprint of the business, reducing energy consumption, minimising the production of all types of waste through careful recycling, encouraging reuse, and the disposal of other waste that cannot be avoided, in a responsible manner.

Our philosophy... it’s a family thing Polyvine was started by Peter and Anne Wells in 1986, and to this day, three generations of the Wells family work at the offices and factory site in Cheddar.

Now Technical Director, Peter works directly alongside his grandson Joe in the laboratory, sharing his years of knowledge and passing on his wealth of experience, while his granddaughter Beth takes care of things in the sales office.

Our Acrylic Enamel Paint range is durable and long-lasting, with a beautiful finish. They’re completely safe for children’s toys, and can be applied using a brush or an airbrush. They’ve been specially developed for easy use, internally or externally, and are non-hazardous and low odour.

Polyvine’s concentrated Acrylic Colourant can be used with all water-based products including scumble glaze, stain, emulsion, varnish, interior paint, glue, filler, masonry paint, tile grout and cement. You can colour all of our water-based products with 10% of acrylic colourant. 25 colours* available in 50g and 13 colours available in 500g.

oil colourant* Featuring dense pigments for colouring glaze, paint and varnishes, our Oil Colourant is available in 7 concentrated colours for superior colour saturation.

A stunning clear acrylic glaze, offering a one-hour working time.

Designed for use with emulsion or latex paint, this acrylic medium produces consistent cracking for dramatic effect. Apply Polyvine Crackle Glaze between two layers of emulsion base coat. This will cause the top layer to crack, revealing the colour of the base coat.

classic colour scumble This Classic Colour Scumble Clear Acrylic Glaze can be mixed with emulsion, offering a one-hour working time.

tropical scumble This Tropical Scumble offers a one-hour working time glaze in temperatures above 21 degrees centigrade.

oil-based scumble A transparent, traditional oil-based glaze for decorative paint effects.

Remember you can use our acrylic colourants with the water-based scumbles and our oil colourant with the oil-based scumble.

Add a sparkly edge to any decorative finish with this shimmering metallic glitter that’s been specially developed to be added to any water-based paint or varnish. Choose from four different colours of glitter (Gold, Silver, Pink or Rainbow), and simply mix with your choice of coloured paint or varnish to create a truly unique, sparkling decorative effect.

Create metal leaf and foil masterpieces with Polyvine’s specialist Metal Leaf Size Acrylic Adhesive, suitable for indoor use. When applied thinly, the surface will remain primed for up to 24 hours, allowing large projects to be handled with ease.

Application of water based varnish Before any application of water-based varnish, always raise the grain on raw wood by simply brushing, sponging or spraying on some distilled water and letting it dry overnight. Then do a final sand to break off the whiskers.

3 high performance finishes

Brushing Stir varnish well; never shake it. Shaking can introduce bubbles. Use a thin varnish brush with fine synthetic bristles. Dip the brush into the varnish, loading it with an amount appropriate to the surface at hand.

To prevent brush marks and bubbles, brush the finish onto the surface in quick, long strokes. Do not rework over areas already covered. Allow the first coat to dry completely - but no longer than 24 hours - before sanding with 220-grit sandpaper. Apply the second coat exactly as the first.

Repeat the sanding and cleaning process again for the third coat.

Give your project a glossy glow, with our ultra shiny gloss finish.

Spraying Polyvine water-based topcoats and wood stains are ready to spray from the container without additives.

Always strain material through a medium to fine mesh filter before spraying. Spray films at 3-5 wet ml thickness. If you have never sprayed finishes before, take a large piece of cardboard and practice your technique first. Spray water on the cardboard to learn how the gun works. Keep your gun at a 90° angle, 6-8” from the surface. On large flat areas, use wet, even patterns 6-8” wide. For narrow surfaces, reduce the fan pattern to 2-3” to reduce overspray. For topcoats, overlap each pass 25% to conceal lines.

If you’re looking for a subtle sheen, then our satin finish is the one for you. Look for the satin finish across the Polyvine range for a beautiful soft finish.

Roller Choosing the right roller is crucial for getting a smooth, even finish. Use a short pile gloss roller for water-based varnish. Do not apply pressure to the roller, this will cause uneven film and produce bubbles in the varnish.

When rolling varnish, use slow, steady strokes and a good technique to ensure a uniform finish.

For a smooth finish with even coverage, use overlapping roller strokes and a brush to manoeuvre around corners and details.

We are very proud of the Polyvine Dead Flat finish. The completely non-reflective, matte surface is available across a number of our varnish products.

The Three Amigos story Do you know the story behind the original skull murals at The Three Amigos Skate Shop in Camden, London? On their original shop exterior art, Polyvine Decorators Varnish was used to protect the vibrant colours from fading over time. This mural was on display for around nine years, but a few years down the line, Polyvine were sent an image of the mural, which had faded everywhere but on the skulls! Why? Well, the varnish had only been applied around the skull artwork, to protect these gorgeous colours, and not on the background. This simply shows how effective our Decorators Varnish is for protecting against the UV rays that cause colours to fade over time.
