Welcoming Remarks from the Dean, CPCE Dear Students, May I welcome you to the family of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University’s College of Professional and Continuing Education (CPCE), consisting of Hong Kong Community College (HKCC) and the School of Professional Education and Executive Development (SPEED).

In CPCE, we attach importance not only to the academic achievements of our students but also to the development of skills and attitudes that enable them to learn, live and work with other people from diverse backgrounds, to adapt and thrive in a volatile age, and to embrace empathy and tolerance. The CPCE Student Affairs Office (CSAO) has devoted considerable energy and resources to facilitating such development. Its services and activities are delivered through three fronts, namely “Personal Growth”, “Counselling Services” and “Further Studies and Career Development”.

Welcoming Message from the Associate Dean (Development), CPCE Dear Students, Welcome to our College!

In the next two years, we will gladly enhance your competitiveness in transferring to degree programmes after graduating from HKCC or joining the workplace after graduating from SPEED! This will be achieved by providing you with quality education, interesting co-curricular activities and a rich campus life.

For quality education, you will receive good academic training quality assured by PolyU. The CPCE Student Affairs Office (CSAO) will further partner with HKCC and SPEED to offer horizon-broadening activities and support services under the categories of “Personal Growth”, “Counselling Services”, and “Further Studies and Career Development”. You are encouraged to find out how these activities and services will enrich your learning and broaden your network as you develop your hobbies and interests.

Being determined to help graduating students as they seek gainful employment, we will be setting up a new office known as the CPCE Employability Services Office (CESO). The CESO will take active steps in understanding your career needs and implementing impactful plans to nurture your employability. You will be updated when the CESO starts operation.

I recommend that you immerse yourself in the rich campus life on both the PolyU Hung Hom Bay Campus and West Kowloon Campus to discover how rewarding your study journey can be.

Message from the Head of Student Affairs, CPCE Dear Students, Welcome to the College of Professional and Continuing Education and be a part of us!

What is your ideal life?

How can you achieve your ideal life?

How can you make good use of your college life to fully equip yourself?

In a fast-changing world, your attitude, personal qualities and soft skills will play a very significant role throughout your life. We believe all of you can have your own potentials unleashed through our diversified activities. Beyond the formal classroom environment, these co-curricular activities will give you opportunities to play to your strengths, and acquire new knowledge and skills. You could

even enrich yourself, broaden your horizons and know yourself better in various settings, which help pave your path to contributing to the community in future.

You may have different expectations for your future study and life. The CPCE Student Affairs Office (CSAO) is ready to provide learning opportunities and support services for you to learn and experience in multiple aspects. The CSAO organises activities categorised into 10 themes, namely Career Development, Contribution and Services, Counselling Services, Further Studies, Global Exposure, Leadership and Communication, Physical and Psychological Wellness, Recognition, Sustainability and Knowledge Enrichment, and Facilities and Support Services.

Regardless of whether you are physically joining us on campus or participating in

our online activities, these brandnew experiences will aspire you to keep improving yourself and developing positive attitudes to meet future challenges.

As the theme of this year is “Get Connected with You”, we hope you can utilise different opportunities to develop a strong sense of belonging to the College and communicate with your lecturers and peers. By joining our activities and services, you will not only acquire new knowledge and skills but also learn how to appreciate and support the people around you. You can also foster

better interpersonal relationships with others. These qualities and values will help nurture your whole-person development and lay a strong foundation for your success in future.

Message from the Chairperson of the HKCC Student Development Committee (SDC) Dear Students, The theme of this year’s HKCC Orientation is “Embrace Changes”.

Your transition from being a secondary school student to being a tertiary student is challenging, as the learning environment is quite different from your secondary school life. However, we believe that all of you are stronger and more capable than you think. Be Flexible and Adaptive, you can embrace all the changes and explore a fruitful tertiary life at HKCC. You will find that HKCC provides a comfortable place and ample opportunities for you to develop your full potential.

Remember that learning experiences are not limited to the classes you attend in a traditional academic setting. They also encompass any interaction or other experiences in a non-traditional setting (outof-school locations and outdoor environments and activities) in which learning takes place. Therefore, in addition to working hard in your academic studies, it is important for you to participate in our cocurricular activities.

In addition to the CPCE Student Affairs Office (CSAO) activities mentioned in this booklet, the Student Development Committee (SDC) of HKCC provides various activities for HKCC students. The Hong Kong Community College Students' Union (HKCCSU), including the Union Council, the Executive Committee, and its affiliated clubs and societies, is an important partner for you in your holistic education. In addition to organising various academic, cultural, and recreational functions for its members, the HKCCSU is a vital platform for nurturing young leaders like you.

Furthermore, our College offers a wide range of scholarships, financial assistance and student support funds to enhance the provision of quality education for our students. Many interesting and useful activities will be held in the coming year to brighten your future. Please pay attention to the emails that the College will be sending to you throughout the academic year!

Career Planning and Preparation

職涯規劃及裝備 To enhance students’ self-understanding and help them explore possible career paths, the Further Studies and Career Centre (FSCC) provides students with various career assessment tools and collaborates with external parties to organise different kinds of activities ranging from self-discovery to entrepreneur training programmes.

Career Explorers Series 職涯探索計劃系列 The programme content includes self-understanding, career planning, communication, debriefing and interview skills training, and service-learning. It aims to widen students’ horizons and equip them with organisation and collaboration skills. As a result, students will be able to transfer these skills to the workplace setting and adapt to work better in the future.

職涯規劃及裝備 Career Assessment 職業性格評估測試 How well do you know yourself? Various career assessment tools are available at the Further Studies and Career Centre to help students learn more about themselves, including their career interests, work values, and career options. Interested students, please ask our Career Development Officers for more details.

Personality assessment workshops, for example, DISC®/MBTI® for Better Career Planning, will also be organised regularly in each semester. For details of the workshops, please refer to the upcoming promotional posters and emails.

Career/Recruitment Talks 求職與行業講座 Professionals from a wide range of industries will be invited to share their experience and expertise. Through these talks, students can learn about recent market trends.

Career Planning and Preparation

職涯規劃及裝備 Executive Leadership Programme (ELP) (in collaboration with the Division of Business and Hospitality Management) 領導及管理培訓計劃（與工商及款待業管理學部合辦） The Executive Leadership Programme (ELP) prepares students to take the helm – to lead confidently and articulate strategically. In an executive role, it is crucial that students have the right blend of soft skills and a strategic mindset to achieve specific performance outcomes. It is the leader’s job to communicate strategically, negotiate skilfully, influence team behaviour and deliver results.

“It is my pleasure to participate in such a meaningful leadership programme. All the workshops are very practical with regard to facing future challenges. Some of them are even so fresh and creative that I learnt some new ideas from various great speakers to tackle the ever-changing market. I hope this Programme can continue to benefit more students in the coming semesters.”

The intensive ELP includes a series of workshops and a final grand dinner with senior executives to equip potential leaders with essential assets, including skills related to presentation, relationship management, office manners, grooming, make-up, Excel, etc.

Career Planning and Preparation

職涯規劃及裝備 Mentorship Programme 師友計劃 The Mentorship Programme was officially launched in 2004. It offers students a chance to reach beyond the classroom and learn from their mentors who are senior executives or experts from diverse fields. The purpose of this programme is to facilitate the holistic development of mentees’ educational, social and personal growth. An experienced working professional will be assigned as your mentor. A series of activities, such as mentee training workshops, a welcome ceremony, company visits, guest talks, outings and an appreciation dinner, will be organised for you and your mentor during the academic year.

Through formal and informal interactions with mentors, your horizons will be broadened, and a more mature prospect for your future career, family and social life can be developed.

Our mentors include managers, senior executives and/ or experts from different industries with five or more years of work experience. They hold a variety of positions, such as directors, vice presidents, CEOs, HR managers, sales managers, hotel executives, IT managers, PR managers, government officials, accountants, surveyors, engineers, social workers, financial analysts and university professors.

職涯規劃及裝備 ●● A company visit to understand the operation of a real business;

Young Entrepreneur Scheme (YES) (in collaboration with the Division of Business and Hospitality Management)

●● Workshops on (i) writing business plans and preparing financial reports, (ii) designing company websites, and (iii) improving presentation skills; and

青年企業家計劃（與工商及款待業管理學部合辦）

●● Short meetings with lecturers, who act as facilitators, to receive advice on writing a professional business plan.

Have you ever thought of being a young and successful entrepreneur? Join the YES, and you will be equipped with the skills to write up a stimulating business plan.

The following activities of the YES will be held in the first semester:

At the beginning of the second semester, student teams consisting of three to five members will submit and present a business plan to compete for awards such as Champion, First Runner-up, Second Runner-up, Best Company Website Design, Best Presenter, Merit and Judges’ Commendation.

職涯規劃及裝備 Future and New Skills Training 未來與新技能培訓 The arrival of Industry 5.0 is expected to bring unprecedented changes to the world. Technical knowledge is in high demand in corporates and organisations where a gap in multidisciplinary skills continually exists. This project aims at increasing students’ awareness of the new occupational demand and equipping them with specialised techniques. A series of technology skills training workshops including machine learning, cloud computing, and big data technology is designed for upskilling students and expanding their capabilities.

職前裝備 Job Application Skills Series 求職技能培訓系列 To stay competitive in the job market, students need to be well prepared and boost confidence at interviews. Through talks and workshops, students are equipped with skills and techniques to write impressive CVs to outshine other applicants and perform well at job interviews. Work Ethics Awareness 職場道德操守 Ethics and attitudes are considered key elements for individuals to achieve long-term success and peace of mind. Through reality-based or simulated examples and interactive discussions, participants will be more aware of general ethical values and different ethical considerations in dealing with dilemmas in the workplace and in situations in everyday life.

The new version of the Articulation Enquiry System (AES) is installed on the computers at the FSCC’s computer facilities.

Students can systematically and conveniently search for graduate articulation information for local and non-local undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes. In addition, a Graduate Articulation Information Booklet that contains the entry GPA requirements, offer statuses, and interview questions of different universities is available at FSCC. Chinese Mainland Services 中國社會服務 In addition to offering local community services, we are dedicated to extending students’ serving experience to the Chinese mainland. By collaborating with social service organisations such as Hong Kong Red Cross, students can plan and organise various volunteer services in the Chinese mainland.

Since 2005, Hong Kong Red Cross has been one of our major service partners in organising services in Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland. Service projects include voluntary teaching and community services in China and a leadership development workshop. Participants will be involved in teaching services and interactions with related parties in Heyuan on the Chinese mainland.

海外體驗 International Cultural Experience (ICE) Tours 國際文化體驗遊學團 The CSAO organises a series of cultural or themed (e.g. adventure, service or language study) tours to the Chinese mainland and overseas countries during the summer break. Scholarships and financial support from HKCC/SPEED and the Hong Kong Government are provided to encourage students to join these meaningful activities and enable them to learn outside the classroom and broaden their horizons. 海外體驗 Talent 100 – Award Tour for Students with Special Talent 飛躍百人 — 匯雋海外獎勵遊 This project aims to recognise students’ non-academic talent. It is an award that recognises students in four areas: art, sports, service, and leadership. One hundred students will be awarded an outbound tour that provides overseas exposure for their particular talent. The CSAO organises a series of year-long projects to nurture students in different areas, and their development in such areas relies on their commitment to the projects. To recognise students’ talent and encourage commitment, the Talent 100 will be awarded to students with observable growth in particular talent and high involvement in year-long projects.

在家看世界 International Student Ambassador Scheme 國際學生大使計劃 International Student Ambassadors (ISAs) are students interested in cultural exchange with overseas guests in Hong Kong. ISAs enjoy academic and cultural exchanges with tertiary students from Australia, Canada, Japan, Singapore, Taiwan and the United States. ISAs are well trained to guide day tours introducing metropolitan Hong Kong to the world. ISAs also attend lectures, enjoy social activities and complete group projects with overseas groupmates. 領導才能 Campus TV 校園電視 Campus TV (CTV) produces short video stories by using basic filming equipment. These stories can be of any kinds as long as they are interesting and funny stories happen around the campus. By sharing your films on CTV, you will have a golden chance to participate in different filming positions and to create a unique film for yourself and all members!

CTV established Facebook and Instagram pages in November 2018 to reach netizens.

In 2020/21, due to the impact of COVID-19, we have created a lot of short videos and have been distributing positive vibes through them. Even when the College continued to suspend classes during the anti-pandemic period, our enthusiasm was not hindered, and a total of ten short videos were uploaded onto the two online platforms to support everyone.

The CTV crew is formed by four groups: • Creative Team - Creating themes and compiling scripts.

• Production Team - Directing and co-ordinating the whole filming process.

• Performance Team - Organising performances, inviting actors and arranging casting matters.

• Administration Group - Activity coordination and promotions; providing logistical support and handling administrative matters.

領導才能 Photography Production Crew 校園攝製隊 Members of the Photography Production Crew are HKCC and SPEED students who have advanced photography skills and a strong interest in serving as photographers in various College events and activities of societies. 提升溝通能力 Self-learning Language Centre (SLLC) (English and Chinese) 語言自學中心（英文及中文） “Self-study” involves studying through self-learning materials without direct supervision. SLLC aims to provide students with different activities and resources to help them improve their language skills by themselves.

Not only is engaging in sports fun and beneficial to your health, but it also helps you relax and develop your concentration, perseverance and team spirit. Thus, we offer various kinds of physical activities to enhance your holistic development.

Physical Education (PE) Courses PE courses are non-compulsory and non-credit bearing. Each course lasts for four to six consecutive weeks with one to two contact hours per week. Popular courses offered lately included badminton, Dodgebee, fencing, soccer, Thai boxing and yoga.

Fitness Introductory Courses This is a two-hour training course that promotes the basic concept of physical fitness and correct and safe ways to use fitness equipment. This course is a prerequisite for first-time users of the Fitness Centres on the two campuses.

心理健康 Enrichment and Wellness Series 身心成長系列 Boosting one’s psychological well-being can result in greater health and happiness. Thus, we are committed to promoting mental health and a positive lifestyle through the Enrichment and Wellness Series.

A wide range of workshops addressing psychological wellness in the areas of emotion, interpersonal relationships, self-awareness and life appreciation will be offered to you. You can learn various transferable skills by participating in games, discussions and psychological tests at the workshops.

To be a mentally healthy person, you should have self-confidence, high self-esteem and a good ability to deal with stress and build healthy relationships with the people around you.

心理健康 Life Appreciation Series 生命讚好系列 Life appreciation is about having direct, immediate and intimate present experiences and meeting difficulties with acceptance, kindness, and patience. In the Life Appreciation Series, students learn to control their relationship with pain, enhance their ability to approach and embrace pain by creating a moment of conscious choice with openness and curiosity and to develop compassion for themselves in the midst of suffering. These skills can ultimately free you from getting caught up in habitual patterns of selfblame, judgment and agitation.

綠色生活 Green Lifestyle Series 綠色生活系列 Over the past few years, the Green Lifestyle Series have launched a series of sustainability activities, such as ecotours, upcycling workshops and art exhibitions. These activities can nurture a culture of sustainability and call for collective efforts on campus to make a change in our everyday lives towards a greener lifestyle.

For the sake of environmental sustainability, we will continue to spread the idea of a sustainable lifestyle that can reduce negative impacts and, in turn, promote the health of the earth. Meanwhile, creating fun and meaningful activities is also important, as it leads our students to have a green, healthy and happy lifestyle.

Sustainability

綠色生活 Hydroponic Gardening 水耕 In the Hydroponic Gardening Project, students will learn techniques for using water instead of soil to grow different kinds of edible organic vegetables (e.g. Chinese lettuce, Chinese spinach, melons, Romaine lettuce, salad vegetables, Shanghai greens, tomatoes, and water spinach).

We will also teach participants how to germinate seeds, transfer sprouts, and harvest vegetables. All participants will be able to share their harvest with their friends and families.

Aesthetics Appreciation

藝術欣賞 Artist-in-Campus 校園藝術家 Aiming at broadening the artistic and cultural horizons of students and staff members, we host a series of art and cultural events on the two campuses throughout the academic year. The project is entitled Artist-in-Campus, and the hope is that the sharing of positive life values and artistic appreciation by local artists will improve the campus life of our staff members and students.

A newly developed software entitled as Pure Ink (a painting software in Ink Art) was introduced to HKCC and SPEED students through a virtual workshop held in June 2021.

藝術欣賞 A Cappella Ensemble 無伴奏合唱團 The A Cappella Ensemble was established in February 2021. Led by Ms Miri LEUNG, Founder and Music Director of SENZA A Cappella, the A Cappella Ensemble aims to instil and ignite a passion for a cappella and singing in students. By being an ensemble member and receiving our professional training and exposure to a range of a cappella vocal performance topics, you will demonstrate competence in the skill-based areas of ear training, sight singing and vocal percussion and be able to sing in a small ensemble with professional vocal proficiency. Most importantly, you will encourage love and appreciation for music on campus.
