With advancements in transportation, digita l communication and normalisation of trade relati ons between different countries, the ‘world became flat’. This led to products of human as well as industrial consumption getting produced in different parts of the world and then getting moved to the converter or consumer base d on its category. Thus, smooth funct ioning of ‘supply chain’ became a critical factor for any operation.

Lockdowns imposed during COVI D pandemic period made migrant workforce to move out of industry centres, which led to the shortage in working hands and thus affec ting the production volumes.

High price of polymers due to rise in energy costs and polym er supply shortages are disrupting operations of plastics processors and operating margins have shrun k. Most operations are run with the mind-set to survive through the present situation for bette r days seen on the horizon. Some Tier II part producers have indic ted exiting business.

Machinery manufacturers are hit as steel supplies are starved due to freight carrier operations being affected by container shortage.

Electronic systems used in drive and control units are in short supp ly as supplies of semi-conductors from China are throttled. Overall, the machinery delivery lead times have stretched.

The plastics industry would have shown better performance, but for disruption in supply chain.

Global supply chain is disrupted acros s sectors. These disruptions have led to the current global shortage of semiconductors, and now the supply disruption of another critical category of materials is plastics. The additional cause of disruption in the supply chain is global shortage of containers for export and import, leading to high cost of freight.

Since March, 2020, due to the pand emic, constraints on supplies of raw materials - especially polye thylene (PE), polypropylene (PP) and monoethylene (MEG) - are leadi ng to factory shutdowns, sharp price increases and production delay s across a range of industries.

The effects of these material short ages are very tight supplies, historically high prices and delivery delays. The demand for plastics continues to surge, especially for food packaging, automobile components and PPE (personal protective equipment). Supply disruption is the major cause leadi ng to closure of micro, small and medium scale (MSMEs) companies in India.

There is a huge challenge in findin g opportunities and solutions on how companies in India and globa lly can continue their production amid the supply chain disruption s.

It is well known that supply chain mana gement is an integral part of most busin esses, including plastic packaging. In fact, it is an impo rtant component for a company’s success because it ensures the customer’s expectation in terms of delivery of goods on time at the right location, right quantity and in right condition up to the level of the customer’s satisf action.

Supply chain disruption becomes most apparent when an unexpected event occu rs, causing significant repercussions for market partic ipants either at one stage of the supply chain or usually for participants along the chain.

COVID-19 pandemic has cause d a huge disruption in supply chain causing shortage of plastic raw materials resulting in increase of price . Moreover, it has also made an impact on the productio n of plastic packaging materials. The cascading effec t of disruption has not only slowed down the productio n process, but also its delivery, sales, promotion and marketing of goods.

In addition, it has also creat ed a huge problem of unemployment. In order to tackle this problem, the manufacturers looked for altern ative materials to avoid any kind of such chaotic situa tion so that it will not have much impact on the overall business growth and development.

Q. What have been the key drivers for your initiative of ‘sustainable packaging’?

To begin, let us understand the meaning of the word ‘sustainability’. To some, the word sustainability means something against plastic. Sustainability actually means the

way you use resources that come from the earth and the sun. It means that you

are able to recycle the materials or end products as much as possible and if not, then you should be able to convert it in

a way that it can become a biologically degradable material. This is what I would

say sustainability would mean. But here is a word that is more concentrated on a green washing approach.

Introduction The first wave of COVID came as a surprise and a rude shock to the supply chain across the world. Reliance Industries Ltd. (RIL) was no exception.

unprecedented in nature and scale. The industry needed to react fast. We too had to

services like sanitisers and hand washes, which is where the packaging industry was, right at the centre of all the action.

Looking at it differently, it was also very thought-provoking and motivational for us to fathom all what we could do, even in these challenging times. There was a

shortage of shipping containers and semiconductors

have had cascading effects on the value chain and has impacted the plastics demand. These have also created a ripple effect and led to situations where the price differential in the spot prices between regions in the

global market generated possible arbitrage opportunities for market participants.

These events have made it increasingly clear that

organisations which have embraced agility in their

he massive disruption caused by the COVID

pandemic world over has now become the new normal.

Organisations

been forced to adapt to this new normal. With further disruptions in the supply chain flow, it has become critical for businesses to provide accurate information to their

suppliers and customers for adapting and adjusting their business plans and expectations.

At APAR, we not only showed the resilience to withstand the disruptions, but effectively utilised the downtime to improve infrastructure at our production facility and

prepared for the inevitable resumption of demand by doubling our production capacity from 5,000 MT to 10,000 MT per annum.

We further undertook an initiative of digitising key

business processes to improve the flow of information which is key to our business planning. We introduced a

smart way of working through digital tools to increase

and digital platforms to communicate allowed us

to provide updates in supply chain disruptions and

enable swift decision making. Our sales and marketing teams used digital statistical tools to accurately forecast

customer demand, thus enabling the business to anticipate and plan accordingly. This further helped our

purchase team in maintaining adequate inventory levels to meet constantly changing customer demand.

To compensate for this increased cost pressure and to earn decent margins,

ince the outbreak of the pandemic from March,

2020, there were many challenges faced and

innovations happened in the field of supply

chain management. With the imposition of lockdown, businesses for almost all the industries were at standstill.

Plastics have saved precious human lives providing safety and packaging solutions for increased hygiene. We were

allowed to operate both injection moulding and extrusion plants to supply machines for essential industries in the field of medical and packaging solutions.

To continue machine building during the lockdown,

our team has helped the suppliers to get permissions for their team to travel and plants to operate. After the

first wave slowed down, business picked up well for

plastic machines and there was an increased demand for material in all categories.

The first major disruption in the supply chain started

from August, 2020 in terms of steep price rise in copper, followed by steel. The balancing act of ensuring timely

supplies, taking into consideration the business interest of our suppliers, was indeed a difficult task. Capital goods machines are executed with delivery times ranging from

3 to 6 months putting a lot of pressure on margins. To compensate for this increased cost pressure and to earn

decent margins, elimination of various non-value-added activities were carried out. Strict control on expenses was the need of time. After the second wave in June, 2021, there were more challenges in

It’s not about the question of rising prices only, it’s about

timely availability of raw material. Many contracts by multinational suppliers were cancelled and availability

with local sources was also absolutely zero. The situation had become pretty scary for us.

However, we are bound by our commitment to serve our

customers uninterruptedly, irrespective of the situation, and we acted swiftly on this. One of the core values of

our organisation has been ‘adaptability’. Identification and approval process of alternate suppliers was done

very fast. To gain more confidence in the new suppliers’

product consistency, an immediate visit by our quality team was planned and a system audit was conducted there to check the reliability of the manufacturing process.

Accordingly, the new sources were identified / analysed /

validated very quickly. In fact, the inventory levels of raw material had gone very high. However, it has given us the confidence to keep our production running without any impact of disrupted supply chain.

e are living in an interdependent globalised world, which will perpetually continue. Supply

chain disruptions raised out of COVID-19

lockdowns overwhelmed almost all major industries across the world, including India.

We, at S&T Plastic Machines, were shocked by an unexpected increase in the cost of input material as well as import parts due to the increase in sea freight cost. These disruptions were quite significant for

companies like us. To overcome these sudden and adverse changes, we had to rework our proven legacy system and come up with strategies to contain the supply chain disruptions.

Our products are designed on the modular concept; this design advantage helped us in optimising the inventory.

We rationalised and well-planned our inventory of local

parts as well as for import parts to address the delays and

spiralling costs. We focused on reducing the contingencies to contain costs. Since we receive 60% of orders from our

existing customers, we decided to temporarily moderate our marketing expenditures as well. With all these kinds

Cellulose as Advanced Materials Renaissance of a Renewable Resource

I

n the August - September, 2021 issue of POLYMERS Communiqué, I discussed

some fascinating features of transparent and elastic wood; properties engineered in wood by a deeper understanding of the meso-porous structure of wood.

Wood is made of three constituents, namely, cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin.

These constituents have been widely explored as fibres, thermoplastics and building blocks for a variety of bulk and fine chemicals. Of this, cellulose is the most prevalent

component found in the cell walls of plants / wood and is the most abundant

naturally occurring polymer amounting to 1.5 trillion tonnes of annual production.

Apart from being almost inexhaustible, cellulose possesses many useful properties,

such as, hydrophilicity, chirality, biodegradability and its ability to form diverse semi-crystalline morphologies. Cellulose in the form of cotton fibre is an ancient material familiar to humans since the beginning of civilisation. fter a long time I had the opportunity to take some time off my routine work

and travel to my native place with my family. My extended family also joined me there. After spending some days together, I realised how important it is

to press pause on the race you are running, take a step back for a while, and relive

your childhood memories. The trip was extremely rejuvenating and revitalising for my emotional and mental well-being! More importantly, I also realised that people’s

thought-process becomes very positive when their mind is relaxed as opposed to

when it is engaged in the chakravyuh of everyday chores and challenges. Although it is imperative that we face these challenges and not run away from them, the

convenience. The benefits of plastics in the food and healthcare sectors

have been substantial. However, these are often eclipsed by the sight of

solid waste pollution caused by the careless discarding of plastic products after use. These are mostly the short-use packaging and convenience
