Use of IT began as an enabler to business, but now it is essential to business.

Manufacturing began using IT as ‘Embedded IT’ i.e. CNC - mach ine control; next, as Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) for resource allocation, scheduling, production reporting, dispatch; thereafter, as Enterprise Resource Planning for business planning, supply-chain managem ent, sales & distribution and accounting. It presently allows customers to track the status of ordered parts in supplier plant s, and, thus making it convenient for him to plan his own production activities. IT has contributed to improved efficiency. In the next stage, industry is ventu ring to adopt programs covered under Industry 4.0 to make factories ‘smart’.

IT and business go hand in hand. In the plastics industry, be it linkages in business, connectivity with customers and vendors, maintenance of machines, optim isation of processes or check on inventory and sales, the role of IT is significant. As the industry moves towards more complex processes, the role of big data collection and analysis for purpose of condition monitoring, predictive maintenance and machine connectivity becomes important . This can be achieved by changing role of IT.

Getting Smarter With Cloud Computing How would you see the impact of ‘cloud computing’ as a part of your business?

Arun Raj Patel

U

se of central common systems, data growth, Industry 4.0 implementation and cloud computing play a crucial for our organisation. We are growing 20% yoy

and cloud computing will help us in our growth plans. Access to cloud applications over the internet is still a challenge in India for the travelling employees; but looking to Indian government initiatives, we see this will improve in coming times.

Babu Padmanabhan

O

ur business now depends on data and analysis of this data. While ERP systems were internal to our organisation and could be hosted on local servers, data

acquired from process machinery at remote locations have to be gathered on a

cloud. Monitoring and analysis of this data is vital to differentiate as well as create progress through cloud computing.

Cloud computing impact is the highest in business use cases where there is the need to rapidly scale-up, scale-out, provide burst computing throughput and

shift customer / our IT infrastructure investments from a CapEx model to an OpEx model.

The cloud also facilitates rapid provisioning / de-provisioning for prototyping, solution development and testing.

Dhruv Shah

A

lthough the cloud is far from a new idea, its impact on our business like hardcore machinery manufacturing is yet to be realised. I see huge potential

for customer processing parameters into cloud with data analytics to create benchmarking in the industry.

Hemant Minocha

T

oday the most sophisticated software, which require big ticket investments in

infrastructure are available on the cloud on SaaS model. This can free up our

resources and we can focus on our core business.

44

POLYMERS Communiqué l June - July 2019

J. N. Bhat

W

ith a paradigm shift of managing and operating business and information

processes on the cloud, our company has been able to focus more on its

core business offerings. It has considerably reduced the intricacies and overhead of managing and operating data-centres and IT infrastructure. Factors such as high

data availability, cost-efficiency, flexible capacity provisioning, security expertise,

carbon-footprint reduction, enhanced collaboration and 24x7 cloud support are the fundamentals driving this transition.

Although we are on the gradual stages of cloud adoption, these factors allow us to better inline the vision of the organisation and strategise the growth forecast with competitive advantages and efficient revenue margins.

Rajesh Parikh

C

loud computing will act as more of an enabler to augment our mission to smart manufacturing. The impact would be better to our industry rather than the

shear meaning of the word ‘impact’. To reap the benefits of automation and IoT

in making the manufacturing process smarter, hanging the data on the cloud with a secured approach will be the easiest solution instead of installing many servers and the investment / upgrading costs associated along with it.

Business Processes are Today Getting More Seamless How automated are your business processes within your organisation and for your customers? Please share an example to highlight the same.

Arun Raj Patel

Babu Padmanabhan

W

e have automated many processes in our ERP through customisation like supplier portal, e-challan and parts pegging.

T

o deliver on our orders, our manufacturing had always involved a heavy use

of computing power that included all aspects of design and engineering.

Increasingly, sales order processing where customers can access information through a CRM system is being felt by our organisation as a ‘must-have’ tool.

46

POLYMERS Communiqué l June - July 2019

Several of our business processes are automated with even more being continually automated.

Few examples of our automated business processes are: NN

Internal operations are completely ERP driven.

NN

Internal training and skill assessment are via the EPZProficiency application on the in-house built extranet portal, http://www.steerforum.com.

Examples of our automated customer interaction are: NN

Mobile app. STEER Customer Support Desk for customer support system.

NN

Customer engagement via mobile application, ‘Touch and Tell’. Used during trade fairs and customer visits to our application development centres.

NN

Customers of our software product suite, Sigma Line Six, can purchase the products online at http://sigmalinesix.com/storeFront. The software is

delivered electronically on completion of the purchase and the customer can begin using the products immediately. No waiting on manual order processing.

Dhruv Shah

W

e moved to high-end ERP few years ago, but the actual advantages have just started pouring in. From customer’s initial requirements to repeat orders and

from design to dispatch, everything is seamlessly connected across our organisation i.e. If the customer needs a conveying system for a throughput of 1,200 kg/hour, to fix the distance just enter the data and the system does the calculation (based

on our German partner software), compares it with customer specific data (from

past records), releases sales order, generates BOM, issues the purchase orders to our

vendors for components (again after re-verifying with stock) and also issues the job order to production. Earlier, we used to have 7 people for the same process.

Hemant Minocha

W

e have been using an ERP since 2005. It is completely integrated and seamless. Once the sales order is entered, the software takes care of all aspects

up to dispatch and collection.

J. N. Bhat

A

t our company, business process automation ranges across inventory and operations management, customer relationship and support, human resource

and workflow management as well as sales and post-sales management. Each of these processes has a blend of automation and manual workflow, of which we look forward to cultivate it as an end-to-end business process pipeline.

As an example, I would like to highlight about the aspects of automation we have

embarked on to regulate and smoothen the sales and service management process. With customer requirements / inquiries making their way into the system, a set of

automated business rules and instructions classify and push these requirements

to the right operations channel for its fulfillment. Post-sales automation focus on providing installation and after-sales servicing workflows that help address evolving customer needs. Support and feedback automation focus on being well-

connected with our customers’ concerns and expectations about our offerings and quality standards. This exchange of data through the business process pipeline

48

POLYMERS Communiqué l June - July 2019

provides an insight that helps us build an environment to cater our deliverables and strategise our offerings as per emerging technologies and market competition.

Rajesh Parikh

A

t our enterprise level, we have used cloud computing from enterprise resource planning (ERP) and financial management to data analytics. To get the

manufacturing and product development on cloud computing and integrating ERP with manufacturing automation, industrial internet of things (IIoT) needs to be adopted. Currently, we are analysing on how to incorporate the migration in the coming future and making it as a mainstream of our enterprise.

It’s All About Getting Wireless Mobile technology impact in the plastics industry - have you leveraged its capability? If yes, how; if not, do you have any inhibitions?

Arun Raj Patel

W

e have done a fair bit in this regard with the FSL (Field Service Lightening) from the customer perspective. Industry 4.0 continues to drive us to the

next level. With the inroads made by mobile technology, the Milacron field support mobile app efficiently assists in troubleshooting errors in machines at customer site.

Babu Padmanabhan

W

e have created an app where customers can order spares or register service requests. The app helps them monitor the status of these orders / requests.

We are further focused on bringing process information from their plants on

to mobile platforms so that remote monitoring and decision making is available to plant managers and owners. Yes! We have deployed mobile applications for example, the STEER Customer Support Desk mobile app. and a ‘Touch and Tell’

customer engagement mobile app. There are several more mobile apps in various stages of planning, development and testing.

can become a part of customer interaction.

Hemant Minocha

costs and product development.

J. N. Bhat

W

e have been able to grow our customer-base due to enhanced networking opportunities and wider demographic outreach. Enabling information

availability at the fingertips has greatly influenced the outcome of our sales

channel and resulted in better collaboration between operations and sales processes.

We now look forward to harness the benefits of mobile technology to expand procurement, specialist services and training resources to be readily available to both, the customers and our workforce.

Rajesh Parikh

W

e are in the process of making several apps from customers placing their orders to plant maintenance reporting to BOTs, and apps for HR. There is

going to be exciting times ahead to implement all such new technologies and awaiting the fruits out of it. And, of course, IoT will be a great enabler to make

Meeting Customer Expectations and Beyond For many, digitalisation has helped enhance customer delight. Your views.

Arun Raj Patel

Babu Padmanabhan

Yes, digitalisation helps the customer and the best example is Industry 4.0.

D

igital interface for controls has resulted in almost all our machinery having a

digital human machine interface. Just as a smart phone is a delight for every

user compared to an ordinary phone, digitalisation of process equipment certainly leads to enhancement in customer experience. Furthermore, when the data is

processed, analysed and presented in a very good visual graphical form, everyone can appreciate the information to the fullest extent.

Digitalisation definitely provides for better and faster customer engagement. An additional take-away is the ability, both from a pre-sale and post-sale perspective, to proactively assist, work with and for the customer rather than the

earlier industry models of reactive engagement. The emerging fields of IIoT, big data and machine learning greatly facilitate this approach.

Dhruv Shah

satisfaction and better customer retention ratio. Today’s customers are more

focussed to understand the business’s reputation, customer outreach, demographic spread, quality and technological advancements before making any business

decisions. Digitalisation has helped bridge the gap to acquire this know-how and provide a competitive edge allowing us to serve the customer better.

We have taken a leap forward with the incorporation of smart factory (Industry

4.0) enabled products in our offering to customers. These products enhance autonomous and data-driven functioning and can help our customers monitor

and visualize, as well as control and regulate their business processes swiftly. It

further boosts our capability to identity patterns and insights to optimise our manufacturing operations efficiently by understanding performance and quality

metrics. Harnessing the capabilities of this next phase of industrial revolution with digitalisation will bolster us to develop and implement customer-tailored digital manufacturing strategies.

Q. IT is known to provide competitive advantages. Have you experienced the same? Share with us an instance. Yes, it is true. At Cosmo Films, we have a competitive

advantage over our competitors due to our excellent IT infrastructure and digitisation processes. In the past, our sales team needed to refer to excel sheets,

co-ordinate with logistics, finance and production to provide quotations to the customers. Currently, they just need to enter the product and required

quantity while sitting in front of the customers, and provide them with a quotation from their mobile phones itself. This process has saved a lot of time

for us and has significantly increased the accuracy of the sales team.

IT Penetration in the Plastics Industry (ITP 2019): A POLYMERS Communiqué Survey Results Declared

T

he ITP 2019 survey by POLYMERS Communiqué well exemplifies the publication’s business approach; an aspect

that the industry acclaims it for. No industry underestimates the power of IT and the plastics industry is no exception. Nothing more relevant to the future of the industry that to well understand the penetration of IT.

While the issue covers a whole lot on this, we decided to validate it with the ground reality by conducting this survey. Some of the findings really surprise...that is what a survey is meant to do...show the right direction to the industry. An objective achieved by POLYMERS Communiqué.

Industry surveys from POLYMERS Communiqué are crafting a new niche for itself and providing the readers a very valued insight into this fiercely competitive market. The responses would serve as a general guide; you would, however, need to evaluate, validate and map responses for your business in specific. Have a read...

Nothing to panic...as close to a fourth say that they are beyond to the half way mark. Honestly, the industry is still trying to comprehend the complexity

of Industry 4.0. This clearly calls for handholding; necessary for overall industry growth. The 4% who have crossed the 90% mark need to be enablers to the success of 4.0!

Spirit of User-Vendor Co-operation

Critical to Automation Success

Q. The right ‘positioning of automation’ is key to its success. Your comments. I would not necessarily term it as ‘positioning’. But it is true that every automation project at

the outset needs to be carefully envisaged in totality. Today, FANUC has almost 4000 robots manufacturing our line up of products. The holistic planning that must precede and the approach

to refining that a user must adopt, is a must. At FANUC India, we emphasise this to any customer keen on robot automation. The work flow, volumes, the viability and even proper introduction to shopfloor team - all need due attention if the project is to succeed in the long term.

Another critical aspect is the spirit of cooperation between the user and automation vendor.

FANUC has a totally customer-centric approach. Even so, and having seen innumerable robotisation projects, I find the most successful and the ones which yield the best RoI, are the

ones where customer side too is lead by a senior minded, solution-oriented person. Some years

ago, we automated a press line at one of India’s top manufacturers. The presses were over 50 years old, and were obviously not arranged with robotisation in mind. Yet, we succeeded - and

the customer was delighted. In fact, right now we are working on a repeat project. The single most important factor was the extremely solution-oriented attitude of the gentleman in charge of the project at customer end. We really worked as true partners.

Engel Presence at K 2019

At K 2019, ENGEL will once again underline its technological

pre-eminence by demonstrating a wide range of challenging industry applications.

I

n the recently concluded 2018/2019 fiscal year, ENGEL achieved

group sales of Euro 1.6 billion, an increase of six per cent over the previous year. “The German-speaking countries of

Europe - Germany, Austria, Switzerland - and Asia, in particular, contributed

growth,”

reports

Dr. Stefan Engleder, CEO of the ENGEL Group. Throughout the fiscal year just passed, ENGEL generated 54 per cent of its turnover in Europe, while Asia accounted for 21 per cent and the Americas for 24 per cent. There are currently 6,900

staff working at the ENGEL Group’s plants and subsidiaries

worldwide, 3,900 of them at the three Austrian plants in

Schwertberg, St. Valentin and Dietach.

Despite robust growth rates characterising the first half of the

2018/19 fiscal year, ENGEL noticed initial signs of a decline in

production in the automotive industry, its most important target

industry, in the summer of last year. “In the meantime, the sales

market has declined drastically worldwide,” says Dr. Stefan Engleder.

The political causes make it difficult to assess further developments.

“We are very well prepared for the changing requirements in the

automotive industry,” as Dr. Stefan Engleder emphasises. “Our customer

Special Masterbatch Technology

for BOPP Lines

“The production of uniform pellets is not

simple considering the process variables. One needs experience and consistent

quality control. This is very important as

the final product i.e. BOPP film, should

shares Padmanabh Shah, in dialogue with

POLYMERS Communiqué.

Q. How ‘special’ can speciality additive masterbatches get in current times? Normal additive masterbatches are for general use in plastics processing. These are based on pigments, fillers, additives etc.

Our masterbatches are special with high concentrations from

40 to 70%. These concentrations are based upon a lot of research and plant trials. Our masterbatches are meant for BOPP lines which run at high speeds. The down gauging to lower thickness with improved barrier properties and without

any loss in mechanical properties is possible only with special masterbatch technology.

isomer has useful physical properties for commercial applications.

In spite of this understanding, synthesis of configurationally pure isomers of many vinyl

monomers has been difficult to achieve. This is especially true if the monomer contains heteroatoms like oxygen, nitrogen etc. Such

heteroatoms poison the Ziegler and other similar catalysts, rendering them inactive. It

is, therefore, not surprising that the family of stereospecific polymers have been restricted only to olefin monomers. Polymer chemists have

long realised that introduction of polar oxygen or nitrogen groups in polyolefin could create

new properties, not available to simple nonpolar polyolefin. However, available chemistry has proven inadequate to accomplish this task.

Discovering a New Class of Polymers Vinyl alkyl ethers are a class of monomers,

which has been available for a long time. One important class of this monomer is iso-

butyl vinyl ether (IBVE) (Refer Figure 1). Under acidic (cationic) catalysts, IBVE undergoes polymerisation.

nature

G. Natta. Calvin Schildknecht, working in GAF Corporation in the USA, observed that

under certain conditions, he could polymerise IBVE to a crystalline solid polymer, unlike the

atactic counterpart, which was rubbery[1]. Calvin Schildknecht noted that the difference in property could be attributed to how the

ether groups were arranged along the polymer chains. He suggested that the crystalline IBVE

must have the ether group placed on the

same side of the chain, implying regularity in spatial configuration. Calvin Schildknecht’s

intuitive explanation of the altered properties of IBVE was prescience. Unlike G. Natta’s

discovery if isotactic PP, Calvin Schildknecht’s discovery did not ignite the interest of the academic community nor the industry. No

commercial applications emerged and the crystalline poly (isobutyl vinyl ether) was relegated to the dustbin of history.

A. J. Teator and F. A. Leibfarth, working at the University of North Carolina, USA have recently infused new life into this old

chemistry. By using an ingenious approach for the design of a cationic catalyst, they were

The Big Idea

Time for Happiness We consistently find that people who are willing to give up money to

gain more free time - by, say, working fewer hours or paying to outsource disliked tasks - experience more fulfilling social relationships, more satisfying careers and more joy, and overall, live happier lives.

A

preponderance of evidence shows that the feeling of having enough time -

‘time affluence’ - is now at a record low in the United States. When my team and I analysed a survey of 2.5 million Americans by the Gallup organisation, we

found that 80% of respondents did not have the time to do all they wanted to each

day. This situation is so severe, it could even be described as a ‘famine’ - a collective cultural failure to effectively manage our most precious resource, time.

Time poverty exists across all economic strata, and its effects are profound. Research shows that those who feel time-

poor experience lower levels of happiness and higher levels of anxiety, depression and stress. They experience less joy.

They laugh less. They exercise less and are less healthy. Their productivity at work is diminished. They are more likely to get divorced. And in our analysis of the Gallup survey data,

my team and I even found that time stress had a stronger

find that people who are willing to give up money to gain more free time - by, say, working fewer hours or paying to

outsource disliked tasks - experience more fulfilling social

relationships, more satisfying careers and more joy, and overall, live happier lives.

Why We Value Money Over Time In studies of middle- and upper-income people across diverse cultural contexts in Europe, Asia and North America, individuals who earn more money report feeling more

pressed for time. In a survey of over 30,000 respondents from Australia, for example, higher levels of time stress were

correlated with higher incomes, and the longer work hours correlated with greater pay could not explain this effect.

Considering that wealthier people can afford to, say, hire

housecleaners and take cabs instead of public transportation, To know more, please subscribe to Polymers Communiqué at subscriptions@polymerscommunique.com

Weekend Delights Friday night to Monday morning, a time to unwind, rejuvenate and be geared to face another grueling week. Each one of us use this ‘my time’ is different ways. And why not, weekend is a time for expressing ourselves. We all have known the personalities featured here as astute business stalwarts; as life is more than just business, we at POLYMERS Communiqué, have started this section called ‘WEEKEND DELIGHTS’. Live life... Lalit Ramsisaria Director

Viva Petrochemical LLP

I look at weekends as a great opportunity for bonding with my family and allocate specific time for myself. Some of the activities involve going out for recreation like movies, swimming, amusement parks, the zoo, game parlours etc. We also make trips to orphanages and old-age homes, as well as spend time with residents. When it comes to spending time with myself, I love listening to music, painting, going for a drive etc. I also enjoy reading nonfictional material based on effective habits, reading spiritual topics touching upon our Gods and our culture. I also spend time researching new business ideas and opportunities as weekends offer a great peace of mind.

Ramesh Dumbre

Associate Vice President Business Development

Sudarshan Chemical Ind

Trekking is one activity that I particularly like and I take this opportunity to motivate you to develop this healthy hobby of trekking. High altitude climb tests your body strength and your mental toughness is on test with every step you take from the minute you start the trek. Treks are quite challenging, full of fun and adventure. Chilly and windy nights, evening showers, scorching UV filled sunlight and low oxygen air make the fun more intense and adorable. The picture alongside is one of my most picturesque treks from Great Lakes Kashmir. Another learning from this trek was the challenges that the Indian army faces each day. The toughest conditions the jawans face there every minute make you salute at every sight of them; I always reciprocated them with warm handshakes and disarming smiles.

Weekends are for my kids! On a typical Sunday morning, I would make pancakes and then head to the beach where we would take a walk and then play football. After having a big brunch with cousins, afternoons are rather lazy so usually read a book or watch a documentary. Over long weekends, we love playing board games or work on building games, it could be a bike or a robo. Later in the day, head for a comedy show or a movie.

Ramesh Varadan Indian Director Yizumi HPM

Weekend is meant for adventures, friends and family. Being part of HOG club; at 6.00 am, I kick-start my Harley Davidson along with group of friends, ride in the morning on free highway, away from all the busy traffic of city. The feeling of the early morning cold winds that wash away the leaves off the passing trees and embracing the body gives you a flying feeling and helps you wash away all the stress. Exploring new locations is fun, chatting and laughing with friends is priceless. Later part of the day to me means relaxing and watching some movies indoor and outdoor or an outing with family for some shopping.

Vijay Goyal Promoter

Sigma Chemicals

For me, a perfect Sunday is full of family time and bonding. It usually starts late, getting up by 8’ish, going to Yeshwant club, swimming 60 lengths, and coming home for a great brunch. Later part of the afternoon is mostly spent with family, sitting together enjoying the moments. Indore is a very vibrant city having huge number of cultural and social events. An average Indorian is a member of a club, 2 to 4 associations or 2 to 4 cultural societies. On Saturday and Sunday evenings, we end up choosing between a pool of amazing events. At times, treks and walks also dot my weekends, especially during the monsoon.
