THIS EVENING’S PROGRAM

— A magical journey awaits —

The Story Line —
OPENING SCENE — A FATHER REMEMBERS
Remembering a time of struggle a father recalls a decision, a journey and their prayers to Akua for guidance. Kalama means light... kalamakū a flaming torch... that is what his people would need to cross the blue continent.
BREAKING THE NEWS
A father tells his strong-willed daughter Orama of his decision to go ahead to the new land. She must stay behind but he will send for her when the time is right, when the land brings its first harvest.
ENTRANCE FLAMED TORCH
Ancient people journeyed with only the stars and ocean currents as their guides. They carried an inner fire of determination that passed like a great flamed torch from generation to generation.
TALKING TO AKUA
Father asks Akua (God) to watch over his Orama, his only child. He asks Akua to protect her and show her the future. Orama scolds heaven for taking both her father and her love Ari on this foolish journey.
SEND OFF CELEBRATION
Flirtatious fun before departure with seductive dances to ensure a safe return.
LAMENT, THE SPIRIT OF THE SEA, A VISION
“Auwe”... a Polynesian lament...Orama though left behind, finds hope in a vision of the future shown to her by Ka Uhane o Ke Kai. She will see her lover Ari again... they will have a child, his name will be Kalamakū.
MEN DETERMINED
Hoe te Vaʻa... the men prepare mentally for a grueling journey into the unknown with a dance of determination, becoming one with their canoe and each other.
THE BLUE WIND CALLS
The Blue Wind calls as the men journey toward uncharted waters. Their voyage following the longest sea road through Polynesia, lifted by the Spirit of the Sea, Ka Uhane o Ke Kai.
A STRANGE NEW LAND
Hula Kahiko, the dance of old captures our soul. Adorned with ferns of the upland above The Wailua River... tell the refrain Kauaʻi... her people sing praise of this land.
CULTIVATION, “SEND FOR MY DAUGHTER”
Planting taro, pounding bark cloth, spear fishing and wrestling... life in the new land begins again. It is time “Send for my daughter!”
FIRE DREAMS
Legends and tales abound in the new land of Pele the Goddess of Fire, her long sleep, her lover Lohiʻau, her sister Hiʻiaka and the Moʻo or Dragon Women of Haena... Ari sees them in his dreams.
THE VISION REALIZED
Orama’s vision becomes a reality with a family’s reunion, a wedding and a child born in the new land. Kalamakū... the flamed torch lives on.
Our story pays homage to a time of separation, a time of enduring courage, a time of celebration and reuniting.
We hope you enjoy this brief refrain and remember your time as well spent with our ohana. We honor the determination of our proud people.
Kalamakū, the flamed torch lives on...
