August 8, 2018 Since its inception in 1987, the Empire Polo Club has been one of the west coast leaders for the growth of polo. Alex Haagen III, owner of Empire, and his team have a strategic focus on developing top quality polo fields and increasing the number of fields to allow for the maximum amount of play during the season. The USPA is proud to call Empire Polo Club an Official Member Club for over three decades. Empire Polo Club embodies the mission of the Association to retain players and grow polo at every level, and in the California desert, the low and medium-goal polo is where it’s at. Polo players from around the country travel to participate in the unique 4-Goal Lions Cup and 8-Goal Champions Cup prize money tournaments, and entry level players benefit from Empire’s hugely successful partnership with the on-site California Polo Club Polo School program. Expanding on his current success and desire to further grow the sport of polo, Haagen will again expand his facility, to over 300-acres, with two new state-ofthe-art facilities which will host new indoor arena tournaments and luxury events. Additionally, the nearby Calhoun Ranch, also owned by Haagen, includes an indoor arena, grass polo field, additional stabling opportunities, and 80-acres of large grass pastures for turning out ponies. And even more, Haagen will provide an Oasis that will be called the “Empire Grand Oasis” and it will offer three new grass polo fields and a 5,000 square foot clubhouse for polo events and parties. This expansion shows Haagen’s dedication to the game and the sport and we are proud to have him and the entire Empire Polo Club as family. To further the positive momentum, Haagen has tapped Hall of Fame inductee and polo legend Memo Gracida to lead the expansion and truly focus on the recruitment of new players and teams. With his strong polo knowledge and critical eye to the game, he’ll maintain the conditions of the fields to ensure they are always in the best playing conditions. The West Coast polo community is strong, but it’s about to get stronger with a clear strategic vision to grow the game and a strong partnership between the Empire Polo Club and the United States Polo Association. We are proud to call Empire Polo Club a USPA Member Club and will be by their side to grow the sport in the California Desert, where it continues growing yearover-year. Sincerely,
