The Palm Beach Polo season will be complimented by a series of medium goal competitions that will include both 12-goal and 14-goal competitions as well as a 16-goal competition, the Everglades Classic in February, for the first time ever. the generations of Julio’s family, starting back in Cuba, circa 1940. One of the highlights of this year’s production for me was sifting through a lifetime of photo albums with Julio’s dad, Carlos Arellano, what a special treat. We also put a spotlight on another famous Wellington player and this years cover model, Polo’s newest ambassador and Piaget spokesperson, Nic Roldan, who was the youngest player to ever win the U.S. Open at age 14. In this issue, Miami based writer John Hood takes us for ride, looking back at the extraordinary history of Delray Beach, where polo was first played in South Florida. SON OF WELLINGTON

or those of us who were part of the polo community, which existed in the early days of Wellington, Julio Arellano was our child prodigy. Polo pros, trainers, blacksmiths, vets and spectators all knew the quiet, shy, boy who used to gallop around Welling-

ton on a small brown horse that looked to be more pony than horse. When Julioâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s family moved to Wellington from Nicaragua, it hardly resembled the bustling town of close to fifty thousand that we know today. Back in the late 70â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, he had to walk to meet the school bus that took him to Greenacres, because there was no school in Wellington. Forrest Hill Blvd was a small two-lane road when Julio was a boy, so it was safe enough that Julio was able to ride his bike down to Southern Blvd to visit a friend.

hen he played polo, he used to wear a helmet with JULIO taped across the front; something his father Carlos did to promote him. Julio played polo all summer in the evenings and Sunday mornings at Palm Beach Polo. Every Saturday at 9:30 in the morning, when he was twelve, he used to take polo lessons from George Oliver, the Hall of Fame, late 9 goal American player. When the children’s television show, Kid’s World, came to Wellington to film a feature piece on Julio for the show, there was an overabundance of local players lined up to fill out a polo game.

They took time out of their day, brought their horses and trailers, and went through the monotonous routine that accompanies filming projects. They weren’t doing this because they wanted to get on TV, but because everyone who played with Julio genuinely liked him and wanted to see him succeed. All of us who played polo with him when he was a boy, cheered him on. We called him Batman, hit him the ball, and watched him run to goal. We gave him a Batman sticker for the back of his helmet, which is something he remembers fondly to this day. You could hardly get a word out of him, except for him thanking his teammates after practice, but on the field, he rode like the wind on his small brown horse with the flying mane.

This year, over twenty years later, the life of Julio Arellano could aptly be titled “The Return of Batman”. Ten years prior, in the year 2000, his handicap was raised from eight to nine goals. It was what we all thought would happen: our local boy going to ten goals. No player wants to admit the burning desire to be ten goals when they are so close; it is almost like a jinx to mention it. But, they all do. Unfortunately, Julio’s stay at his new handicap was brief. The very next year he was dropped back to eight goals, a blow that still stings. Now, ten years later, he has been raised again from eight to nine goals, which gives him the honor of currently being the highest rated American polo player in the United States, and, more importantly, being one goal away from the rating of ten. He was part of the historic Crab Orchard Team that was the first team to win all three of the top three tournaments in America: the CV Whitney, the Piaget Gold Cup and the US Open. This story pales against his life journey, as both a polo player and a man. It is a tale that winds through a violent take-over of two foreign countries and of smuggling polo horses over the border and out of a communist Nicaragua. His story includes being a child prodigy in the largest polo facility in the world, as well as a romance that sprung out of polo and created a family that still plays together from south Florida to northern Wyoming.

THE FIRST SON OF WELLINGTON FEATURES

Julio Arellano was named after his grandfather, Julio, a hard working rice farmer from Cuba. The elder Arellano sold his rice to the company that produces Uncle Ben’s rice in the United States and every year Julio, the grandfather, made a trip to Houston, Texas for a convention of rice farmers. In Cuba, the family had horses for the children to ride on their farm but as yet, there were no polo players in the family. In 1960 when the Cuban revolution succeeded and the communist regime took over the government, Julio Arellano Sr. took his wife and five children and escaped to Texas with five hundred dollars hidden in a stick of deodorant. Carlos, the oldest son, remembers the benevolence of the Texans. “I have always called myself an American because everything we had was given to us by Texans; furniture, beds, a recliner and kitchen utensils.” Carlos was somewhat disappointed because he thought when he moved to Texas that he would be able to continue riding and become a cowboy. Unfortunately, the family’s finances did not have room for horses. Julio took a job from an old Texas acquaintance he had met while farming rice in Cuba. He was a supervisor in a rice cleaning plant. After two years, in 1962, Julio began to lease land in Texas to plant rice. He found one hundred and seventy five acres in Winter Lake, Texas and soon had built himself into a prosperous rice farmer. His two oldest sons attended Texas A&M University. In 1967, Julio was approached to travel to Nicaragua and start a rice farm. The Arellanos then settled into their third country in eight years. While in Nicaragua, Julio’s oldest son, Carlos, was introduced to the sport of polo. He went to watch a polo game and was loaned a horse, a stick and a ball. The horse had a bowed tendon but he bought it any way. Before long, he was in practice games and was hooked on the sport for life. In 1969, Carlos made the Nicaraguan National Polo team and was invited to play in the Central American Games, which featured teams from Honduras, El Salvador and Costa Rica. It was here that Carlos met Francisco Escobar, the father of Louis Escobar, while playing polo. While in Nicaragua, Carlos married Margarita Buraies, the daughter of a Brazilian banker. Soon they had a son, whom they named after Carlos’ father, Julio. A daughter Maria and another son, Carlucho followed. Unfortunately, during this time, Nicaragua was in the middle of political unrest. A corrupt and brutal group of politicians in power gave rise to a gang of discontented citizens, led by a violent anti-government group known as the Sandinistas. The Arellano family had little time to enjoy a productive run as rice farmers: in December of 1972 there was a catastrophic earthquake killing 10,000 and leaving 50,000 homeless in the town of Managua. The corrupt government under President Somoza stole much of the relief money to rebuild the town, which added fuel to the Sandinista regime that raided a government party and took hostages. This set off a chain of raids and hostage taking across the country. Ransoms were paid, Sandinistas executed and government officials were murdered.

Carlos put his family in one bedroom and put mattresses against the windows for protection. A short time later, as Julio senior and Carlos were driving into town just before curfew, Julio noticed something strange on the highway: there were no cars coming from the other direction. Tipped off that there was trouble ahead, Julio told his son to turn the car around and head home. The family realized they had stayed too long and once again Julio, with his family, were forced flee a country in turmoil. One problem was that Carlos had built up a string of polo ponies and did not want to leave them behind. In a clandestine, night operation, Carlos and his groom trucked 13 horses about one hundred miles from the Costa Rica border. The horses were then led every night across the countryside for a week and hidden under trees during the day. Finally, the horses were smuggled across the border with the help of a polo-playing friend. Meanwhile Carlos and Margarita, together with their three children, Julio, Maria and Carlucho, flew into Guatemala where Margarita’s father now lived. They fled the country one week ahead of president Somoza and his successor: just before the Sandinistas took over Managua. The Arellanos moved to Miami where Julio Arellano Sr. resumed his rice farming business in Florida. They leased 2,000 acres in Belle Glade Florida in western Palm Beach County. By this time, a brand new town in central Palm Beach had sprung up from a cattle ranch called Wellington. A businessman with a vision built Palm Beach Polo, the world’s largest and most prestigious polo facility. Carlos moved his family here, as he wanted to play polo. In the early eighties, Carlos and his father went into business with two other families associated with Wellington Polo. In 1982, Carlos and his father went into partnership growing rice with Alvro Carta at Gulf and Western. They went into business farming 25,000 acres of sugar cane in and around Bell Glade. Mr. Carta’s daughter Alina was a young polo player who was one of the top women players in Wellington. In 1984, the Arellanos went into business with the Midolos, whose daughter Sylvia was also one of the top female players in Wellington. Carlos was playing polo in Wellington with a group of agrarian businessmen who were galloping down the polo fields of Wellington on Sundays. This group included the Rodriguez family, the Carta family, and Francisco Escobar and his two sons, Jose and Luis. There were father-son polo tournaments in Wellington. The Rodriguez boys, Frankie and Robert, played with their father Rin, while Steve and Dick Kuhn played with their father, Walt, who ran a stable and polo school in Wellington called Fairlane Farms. Guerry Stribbling played with his sons, Tom and Boone, Alan Scherer played with his sons, Brad and Warren, and Alvro Carta played with his daughter Alina. Carlos was chomping at the bit for his son to join the action, but Julio was younger than the other boys were; the only other kid his age was Bunky Martin who played at Royal Palm Polo Club in Boca Raton, Florida. Carlos and Margarita now had six children of their own.

“The only thing I remember about the game was I was trotting one way and everybody else was trotting the other.” Some of the older players that played that day were Michael Sparks Jr., Luis Escobar, Pete Merlos and Ted Moore. “I played practice chukkers at Walt Kuhn’s Fairlane Farms at an indoor/outdoor arena but I couldn’t go all the time because it was expensive,” Julio said. Soon Julio became a fixture at Palm Beach Polo practice chukkers in the summer twice a week at 5 p.m. and on Sunday mornings. The games were an assortment of local Wellington polo players and trainers that were played on the backfields. It was a family type atmosphere and Julio was the kid everyone rooted for. “Those were happy times, the only thing I can compare it to now is Big Horn, Wyoming in the summer. Everyone was friendly and there was no professional negativism.” Julio played polo along side old timers Herbie Pennell and Benny Guiterrez. Vicki Armour once brought Wilt Chamberlain to the field. “I remember Mario DeMendoza brought oranges that were painted white and put them on the end line as a joke for Norberto Esqueta to hit with his mallet.” During this time, Julio was asked to play for Almedarez in two year-end, eight goal tournaments following the World Cup in late April. The finals were played on field one, which was the most prestigious field in North America. It became obvious to everyone who witnessed his first big tournament that he was on his way up the handicap ladder. “Going to ten goals has been a dream since I was 14. I used to sit in the stands with my mother watching Memo on field one at Palm Beach Polo. I’d watch the other team score against Memo’s team and I’d look over and say to my mother ‘Mom! Watch, he’s mad now. He’s going to go down and score a goal, and, sure enough, he would get the ball, and go down, and score.”

“The only thing I remember about the game was I was trotting one way and everybody else was trotting the other.” Julio’s first job, after playing for Almendarez, came playing number one for the Excalibur Polo team in the January and February 14 goal at Palm Beach Polo. He was fifteen years old, rated at one goal, and was paid expenses for his horses and loaned two horses to play. “I got screamed at so much.” It was a discouraging experience. The next year things began to change. Memo Gracida had built the first training facility in Wellington and Julio had been taking lessons every Saturday morning from Memo’s father in-law, George Oliver. He was also playing practice chukkers there on the weekends. Memo at the time was arguably the best player in the world. He had just won the Argentine Open and had a string of U.S. Open wins. He also recognized that, with a one goal handicap, young Julio would be an asset to any team he played on. The following winter, at age 16, Julio was given horses to ride and played in the high goal for the first time at Palm Beach Polo for the Les Diablos Bleu 22 goals team with Memo, Mike Azzarro, and Guy Wildenstein.

“Mimi and Memo and that family at La Herradura, I have to attribute a lot of my success to that, starting with the lessons with George Oliver. I practiced a lot at Mimi and Memo’s, and I got to play in my first high goal tournament with Memo.” The following year, Julio was raised to two goals and was invited to play for the Rolex team with Geoffrey Kent, Juan Badiola and Carlos Gracida. The following October, Julio was called to Kentucky to play for Guy Wildenstein at the finals of the U.S. Open in Lexington. It was a surreal experience. “Friday night you fly into Kentucky, and then we won the Open. I went back to the hotel had a shrimp cocktail and pecan pie and the next day I was back at school. My mom made me take my books. She’s a great lady.” Julio was then raised to four goals. Julio graduated from Cardinal Newman High School in West Palm Beach, Florida and then went on to Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida. The summer of his nineteenth year, Julio went to California to play with Memo, Carlos, and Ron Bonaguidi. It was then that he met another great lady, Meghan Murphy. Meghan was eighteen and

The grooms pitched him a water hose that he tied around the horse’s neck and the two were pulled to safety. His career is full of accolades; Julio has won the US Open four times. He has won the Federation of International Polo championship while playing for the United States in Berlin. In 1991, he was voted young player of the year and in 2005 he was voted most valuable player of the US Open. In 2008, he won the scoring crown of the North American Polo League with 115 goals for the season.

style of play is not flashy; he will be the first to admit that he doesn’t possess the stick work of Facundo Pieres or Cambiaso. But, what has set Julio apart from many of his contemporaries is his consistency, and field generalship. He plays an open flowing type of polo, much like his childhood mentor Memo Gracida.

In the last ten years, Julio has been blessed by being a part of some winning programs. With Steve Van Andel and Orchard Hill Polo, Julio reached the finals of the Silver Cup, the finals of the 22 goal, and the finals of two U.S. Opens. After this, Skeeter Johnston gave Julio his first year-round job, and Julio made it to the finals of the Open with Skeeter. It was the first time that Julio was afforded an opportunity to significantly upgrade his string of horses. “It gave me a steady income to really buy horses.” It’s a never ending process, and, as far as horses go, there is always one better. Cambiaso may own up to a thousand horses and yet he still comes to Florida and buys five more in the winter. Constantly refining his string of horses has paid off for Julio, as Julio’s brown mare True, won best playing pony honors in the US Open finals this year. Of recent highlights, Julio sites being able to come to Wyoming and work, “The friendly atmosphere and being able to watch my kids play in the Big Horn Polo Club, next to the Flying H where I play, is awesome. This summer I got to play in a practice game with Meghan and our two sons, Augustine and Lucas.” Meghan and Julio are both dedicated parents. “We used to have to drive the horses at the last minute to where we were going to play but we decided that wherever we play, we take the kids, (which now includes their daughter and youngest, Hope). We’ll go on a three week trip in our RV. We’ve been through Maine and most recently, Yellowstone Park. It’s the highlight of our year,” Meghan says. Julio is a fan of statistics. “I love to read stats in the paper. I wish there was more of that in polo like in other sports,” he says. “I always look for statistics in the newspaper, but, compared to other sports, you get very few stats in polo,” Julio says. Despite being a sport with a long history, there is a poor record of statistics. For instance, who are the top ten goal scorers in the history of the U.S. Open? Or who are the top twenty scorers in the high goal, and how many goals have they made? Julio is one of the fittest men in polo, which comes from a grueling workout program. He is built like a greyhound, which, as any horseman can tell you, is the best way for your horses. Jockeys are handicapped by the pound on the racetrack; it only makes sense in a sport like polo that weight plays a huge factor. “He is one the hardest workers I have ever seen, an amazing athlete who’s incredibly conditioned” says Meg Guion, fitness trainer for Fitnesinsight.com in Sheridan, Wyoming. Julio keeps busy with his training and practice, so he can compete with the up and coming players.His

Julio has played through three transitions of high goal in Wellington. Palm Beach Polo started it all, then the majority of players formed their own league at South Fields Polo in Wellington and finally International Polo Club built a world class facility, along with its sister club, named after the first US Open team, The Wanderers. “When IPC (International Polo Club) came along, it filled the void for a high goal venue in the United States,” Julio says. It only makes sense. Looking back on this past year, Julio sites being a part of the winning U.S. Open team at the International Polo Club in Wellington, as one of his life’s highlights. “It was a great opportunity to be able to play with Adolfo Cambiaso at Crab Orchard. When I got on the team, my goal was to say ‘if they don’t win, it’s not Julio’s fault.’ I started practicing penalty shots in January. The hard work paid off as Crab Orchard swept the three twenty-six goal tournaments at the International Polo Club this past winter. They were the first team in history to do so. Julio scored the last three goals for Crab Orchard in the final chucker. “George Rawlings was great to play with, and, to be able to play on the same team with Cambiaso was amazing, all you have to do is take your man and the rest takes care of itself,” he says humbly. When reminded that he scored the winning goal, on a long run, during the final seconds of one of the preliminary tournament games, he gives the credit to his horse. “I knew if I got the ball on that mare that they couldn’t catch me. They hit me the ball and I went like…he paused, Batman?” I offered.

Like all Florida stories, some of the good guys go bad, some of the bad guys make out good, and it isn’t always clear which is which. There’s heartacheand loss, desperation and ruin. And a cloud of malfeasance as thick as thieves. In the end though, it’s the story of a people who weren’t content to merely endure – they had to prevail. A story of bold souls, who made for themselves a place in the sun, both despite, and because,

others

said

nce upon another time, in a very different South Florida, a U.S. Congressman, a civil engineer, a couple of railroad operatives, and a handful of farmers found themselves on a launch crossing a long lagoon, just south of, what was then, the very end of line. In front of them, lay a landscape so vast and unexplored that most folks still considered it to be a proverbial “middle of nowhere.” But, by the time these men alit from their craft, hauled themselves through the muck, and disembarked from the barge, that took them down a meandering inlet, each and every one of them was fully convinced that this was America’s last piece of prime Promised Land.

The congressman doing all the convincing was one William Seelye Linton, a Republican from Michigan’s 8 th District. A year earlier, Linton had come to this desolate area south of Lake Worth – first with former Civil War Major Nathan Boynton; later with a bookstore owner named David Swinton. Backed by Swinton, the congressman had amassed an impressive swath of lush wilderness, which he was now angling to develop. To that end, Linton had brought along E. Burlsem Thomson, the civil engineer, and W.W. Blackmer, a clerk for Henry Flagler’s Florida East Coast Railroad. Thomson had been enlisted to map the swampy swath into a town; Blackmer represented the railroad, which would be necessary if said town were ever to become a destination. The farmers weren’t just along for the ride either – they were the prospective purchasers of Linton’s lots, and the very ones he counted upon to tame the wilds.

After a rather awe-striking journey, the group put in at the Orange Grove House of Refuge, a way-station for shipwrecked sailors, operated by the U.S. Life-Saving Service (a precursor to the Coast Guard). Officially known as House of Refuge No. 3, the simple structure, built of hearty Florida pine and almost organically designed, was one of the rare oceanfront dwellings between West Palm Beach and Miami. And its setting atop the sandy ridge that arose between the waters of the Atlantic and murk of the swamp provided a picture perfect vantage point for Linton to make his pitch to the would-be pioneers. It didn’t take long. Within weeks all the available plots of land had been sold, a post office was established, and a town was officially born. The year was 1895, and that town was called Linton. As the first of the many communities that would eventually pepper the fertile stretch of swamp and sand between Lake Worth and Biscayne Bay, Linton should’ve been blessed

with all the advantages bestowed upon those that get in the game early enough to write the rules. But when the player who brought the pen to the table is using invisible ink, there’s no reading the writing – even if it’s on the very wall you’ve just built. In this instance the pen happened to belong to the town’s namesake and what was written could well have been titled: It’s My Game and I’m in It to Win It, or How to Flim Flam Friends and Fleece the Neighbors. Whatever the title, it seems Linton got caught up in all the heady, wheeling and dealing going down at the town’s founding, and the ensuing bout of land fever induced him to flip both his own parcels, as well as parcels of land that he didn’t own. Unfortunately, the majority of the folks doing the buying were farmers, who’d invested pretty much down to their last dime. So when the winter of ’98 brought about a deep freeze that killed off much of the crops, many of the homesteaders were forced to try and mortgage their properties. Of course, this is no easy feat when there are no properties left to mortgage. Wiped out, way past weary, and with no recompense, many of the men then fled back to Michigan. Congressman Linton ran right along with them.

Okay, so maybe the events didn’t happen in quite that order (like all Florida stories, facts are as fluid as whatever waterway gets in someone’s way). But Linton did flee, before either the long arm of the law caught up with him, or the banks could foreclose on whatever properties he really did own. And he did so posthaste. Whether the speculating politician was really criminally corrupt, or simply severely overextended, is by now a moot point. The truth is his actions helped bring about the town’s initial bust, and from then on out its folk equated his name with mud. What do you do when you get mud on your shoe? Well, you wipe it off of course. And in 1898 the good citizens of Linton voted to wipe the name of the town’s founder right off the map. In its place came Delray, an Anglicized version of Del Rey, which was the town outside of Detroit where many of the early settlers had been raised. And the man who suggested the new name was none other than Linton’s old barge-mate – W.W. Blackmer. These days the name of Blackmer is largely forgotten; even the street originally christened in his honor is now unceremoniously known as NW 5th Avenue. But, unlike Linton, that particular name-change had nothing to do with malfeasance. Blackmer was one of the good guys, and he not only helped steward the fledgling town through

banization, the Yamato members were so well-liked and respected by the people of Delray that when Roosevelt signed the Executive Order calling for the internment of America’s Japanese, the community banded together to keep them free. And while the Colony’s dream didn’t turn out quite as planned, and many eventually turned elsewhere for their livelihoods, George Morikami stayed on well into the ‘70s, at which time he gave his land to Palm Beach County. It is now The Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens. Among those of European descent not yet mentioned, perhaps the most notable is Adolf Hofman, one of the hearty farmers whose pineapples, tomatoes, peppers and beans did much to give Delray many a banner year (“The Banner Town” would become another city slogan). Hofman, a German immigrant, combined his agricultural knowledge, unceasing resilience and knack for a good land grab into a kind of mini empire. And his life would inspire more and more people to come to the region in order to do likewise.

stormy seas of uncertainty; he was instrumental in ensuring Flagler’s East Coast Railroad chose it as the next stop. (Though with the State of Florida giving ol’ Henry 8000 acres of land for every mile of track he laid and both Julia Tuttle and William Brickell offering half their Miami Riverbank holdings if he would head south, Flagler would’ve undoubtedly run his railway to the end of America, whether there was a next stop or not.) Of course, W.W. Blackmer didn’t make Delray a success all by himself. He had lots of help. And it wasn’t limited to those of European extraction either. Former African American slaves and a few of their B . Later a small contingent of Japanese farmers also made their mark when they founded the Yamato Colony, which was backed by Flagler (who wanted more produce to ship) and blessed by their own Emperor (who apparently needed to get rid of a few citizens). Noble souls of the soil, all of whom had been displaced by their home country’s rapid ur-

Hofman’s efforts were many and varied, and they could easily be a blueprint for how to succeed in a brave new world. He and his wife Anna, a charter member of Delray Ladies Aid Society, used his home to host the first services for the Evangelical Lutheran Church. When the time came to construct an actual edifice, Hofman served on the building committee. (That wooden church still stands behind Trinity’s North Swinton Avenue sanctuary.) After excessive dredging of the Everglades adversely affected his crops, and Flagler’s monopoly on shipping sharply limited his profits, Hofman turned his farmland into new neighborhoods, among them Del-Ida Park, Las Palmas, and Ocean Breeze Estates. (The Royal Palms Hofman planted can still be seen gracing Sea Breeze Avenue.) And, when the town needed a financial institution of its own, he banded together with four other men to found the Bank of Delray, which made its first loan in 1914 to a retailer named Abraham George, (George’s store, A. George and Sons, would exist on East Atlantic Avenue until 1997.) Like many of America’s financial institutions, The Bank of Delray (later renamed The Delray Bank and Trust) would close because of the Crash of ’29; unlike most of those failed institutions however, Hofman, and his fellow directors personally made good on all deposits. But, even in its relatively brief existence, the Bank would back some of Delray’s most spectacular development, including the construction of the Colony Hotel and the Arcade Building, both of which proudly still stand on Atlantic Avenue. The Colony, which is now known as the Colony Hotel and Cabana Club, dates back to 1926. It was designed by Addison Mizner, and his associate, Martin L. Hampton (the

architect also behind Downtown Miami’s Congress Building and South Beach’s Old City Hall). Originally known as the Hotel Alterep, after its first owner, Albert T. Repp, it was picked up in 1935 by father and son, Charles and George Boughton, and renamed The Colony. For decades, the resort kept to a seasonal schedule and in 1948 a sister hotel opened to serve those summering in Kennebunkport. I In 1990 the inn went year-round and it hasn’t looked back since. Listed among the National Trust’s prestigious Historic Hotels of America, The Colony continues to attract a cross section of colorful visitors (i.e. director Gordon Parks and Leonard Nimoy, aka Spock) and it remains a testament to the succession of visionaries who saw a bright future in Delray. Better yet, to this day the charming landmark remains in the Boughton family – not only is Charles’s granddaughter, Justina, the current GM, but the ghosts of both Charles and George continue to lurk about, and it’s now also a favorite among spirit seekers. That’s right: The Colony is haunted. While the 1923 Arcade Building may not boast its own ghosts, the presence of its early clientele can still be felt, especially in the back bar, of what once was the Arcade Tap Room. Bootlegger Joe Kennedy drank here, and so did his mistress, undoubtedly to avoid being scoffed at by the snobs living up by his family’s Palm Beach compound. Nobel Prize-winning poet, and playwright, Edna St. Vincent Millay, tipped back a few at the Tap Room too, probably because some of that set didn’t dig her swinging either. (In Millay’s case though, her marriage was officially an open one.) And, at least one Winston Churchill, reportedly wandered in a time or two as well, most likely the grandson, who was a long standing, part-time Palm Beach resident. Add to that mix the gaggle of illustrators, who kept studios in the Building, and basically used the Tap Room as their own front parlor, and you’ve got a heaping helping of table-hopping that ran the gamut of society’s swingingest swells. The Arcade Building didn’t boom overnight however – Hofman was forced to foreclose on its owners just after the Building’s completion and The Tap Room wouldn’t open until 1933. But, as the upstairs spaces became occupied by cartoonists, such as Fontaine Fox (creator of “Toonervilee Trolley”) and H.T. Webster (“Casper Milquetoast – The Timid Soul”), and the shops went to the likes of Sadie Sundy (daughter of Delray’s first mayor, John Shaw Sundy, of Sundy House fame), another well-heeled Northerner was making some of his own bold moves; moves that would pave the way for Delray to become the seasonal center of an even more exclusive universe.

This man’s name was John “Jay” Phipps. Eldest son of the mighty Pittsburgh steel magnate, and a true lover of everything equestrian, Phipps had already parlayed his father Henry’s pioneering investments into a real estate portfolio, that included a full third of the town of Palm Beach. Now the scion was angling to develop an assortment of withering pineapple groves he’d purchased west of Lake Worth, and just north of Delray. The first of these large parcels Phipps dedicated to the development of a tony subdivision, christened El Cid. Then he did what all equestrian-loving tycoons are wont to do – he built himself a polo club.

Like sewing machine heir Paris Singer, whose Everglades Club set the stage for Addison Mizner’s Mediterranean Revival style to take over the region, Phipps seemed to believe Palm Beach was getting a little crowded. And, while Singer and his pals were working on opening The Gulf Stream Golf Club, still one of the most exclusive in the world, Jay Phipps and his brother, Henry, were busy founding their own Gulf Stream Polo Club. The minute the first ponies hit Phipps Field in 1927, it was unquestionably a singular sensation. In addition to the fields, of which there were three, Gulf Stream boasted fourteen stables, capable of housing more than 150 polo ponies, as well as a complex of frame cottages, built especially for the players and their families. Also on the grounds were facilities for tennis, and, of course, the obligatory yacht club. In 1929, the Social Register gave it a nod, and throughout the ‘30s it served as the only action south of Aiken. That stellar decade of play wasn’t entirely without mishap, however, and, during the 1936 season, Prince Serge Mdivani (of “The Marrying Mdivanis”)

was thrown from his mount and killed. Mdivani, who’d ditched starlet Pola Negri, after she’d lost her fortune in the Crash of ’29, and divorced opera singer Mary McCormic, in a headline-racked trial, had only recently wed his sisterin-law, socialite Louise Astor Van Alen. Louise, his newly wed wife, was in the stands when he took his tragic fall. Strangely, Serge Mdivani’s brother Alexis, who’d left Louise Van Alen, to marry Woolworth heiress Barbara Hutton, was himself killed, in a horrific traffic accident, in which he was decapitated. But, I digress. Until World War II, Gulf Stream Polo Club was the be-all to end-all of play in the breakaway town north of Delray. And, though Stewart (“Mr. Polo”) Iglehart, George Oliver and Michael Phipps brought back the action in 1946, it is unlikely there was a headier time than in that first pivotal full decade. In 1954, the competing Palm Beach Polo opened in Wellington, and, in 1964, Gulf Stream (renamed Gulfstream) moved to Lake Worth. The grounds, now house a private school. In 1928, between the construction of the Arcade Building, the introduction of polo, and the retrofitting of The Colony, Delray became Delray Beach, and the ever resilient city once again altered its destiny. Just as the name Delray nullified the sullying done by Linton, the change to Delray Beach helped keep the town sound through the Crash. And, though the switch may have tempered the legacy left by those who lived off the land, the early pioneers haven’t been forgotten - just check the street signs. Their efforts continue to resound, in fact pineapples, which were grown by everyone from Hofman to the Yamato, and can now be found affixed to everything from a subdivision, to the Arts District, are as prevalent as ever. Stepping up, when things are coming down, is how a town remains in the game, and Delray Beach continues to step up with the best of them. More to the point – it’s flourished. These days, Delray Beach is hotter than ever, and there’s not a square foot of Atlantic Avenue that isn’t popping with the kinda action that the likes of Linton and Hofman wouldn’t pay dearly to see. Delray Beachers, such as Scott Frielich, Rodney Mayo, Dave Robinson and Butch Johnson have between them Delux, Tryst and 32 East (not to mention Dada, around the corner on Swinton), and restaurateur David Manero, boasts both The Office and Vic and Angelo’s. Then again, maybe the town’s founders envisioned this kinda growth from the beginning. After all, good, bad or a bit of both, it takes vision to build something from nothing. Since Florida’s been the site of some of the most spectacular crimes in history, it only makes sense that the state would also be home to many of the most accomplished crime writers ever to get into the game. And Murder on the Beach has hosted them all. As the only store in the state that focuses on mystery fiction, though its stock covers crime writing of every stripe, owner/operator Joanne Sinchuck’s book-filled nook is not just a favorite for Floridians of the genre, it’s also become a must stop for every touring author who counts crime as their raison d’être.

Opened nearly 15 years ago, in one of Delray Beach’s more historic buildings, 32 East has become a mainstay for discriminating diners. Perhaps, that’s because owner Butch Johnson is as hands on now, as he was when the eatery first opened. Maybe, it is simply due to the fact that Executive Chef (and Partner) Nick Morfogen, continues to create the kind of sensations made possible by stints at such renowned institutions as Le Bernadin and Le Cirque.. Whatever the case, the mix of small town attention, and big city flair, makes 32 East a place that sates people in the best possible ways. Why else would they keep coming back for more?

For all the wining and dining available on Atlantic Avenue, actual nightclubbing was always in short supply. Delux changed all that. Now Delray Beachers not only have a place to play well into the wee hours of the morning, they can do so in a setting that rivals some of the best in the region. Okay, so it isn’t South Beach. And maybe you won’t find the likes of Kim Kardashian shaking her rather considerable assets out on the dance floor. But, do you really miss travelling all that way to rub elbows with buncha C-List celebrities? Of course you don’t.

Vic & Angelo’s

Tryst

Dada

Vic & Angelo’s may have been born over in Palm Beach Gardens, but its Delray Beach offshoot is by no means some second cousin. In fact, restaurateur David Manero has ensured that this relative is accorded the same respect as its elder. The results speak for themselves: night after night of wall-to-wall diners, all singing along to Sinatra, and reveling in the kinda old world fare that makes Naples the stuff of legend. The lunch crowd doesn’t slouch either; in fact, they all seem to look as if they’re in on a secret, though if success is any barometer, it’s one of the worst kept secrets in history.

Launched by some of Delray’s most esteemed restrauntuers and power-players, Tryst was destined for success before it opened its doors. But despite the success of some of their earlier ventures (including Dada, Delux and 32 East) it’s unlikely the team behind Tryst could have predicted the kind of packed house Tryst opened to. Of course, being located just off the corner of Atlantic and Swinton doesn’t hurt…nor does a pub-like atmosphere built for a brave new world. But if everything its owners touch turns to gold, Executive Chef Julian Greaves delectables turn to butter once they leave your fork.

If scores of awards and reader reviews are any indication – there’s no place like Dada. Housed in a residence dating back to Delray’s initial heyday (and rumored to be haunted by its previous owner) Dada is modeled in the popularized southern fashion of roadside eateries raised out of Granny’s antiques. Recalling nostalgia for a Bohemia that never truly existed, whether or not Hugo Ball, Tristan Tzara or jean Arp actually ever envisioned such a creation amidst their wild nights, if they were around today they’d surely deem it comparable to their own beloved Cabaret Voltaire (albeit one that offers mac’n’cheese).

Another coup in David Manero’s ever-expanding empire, in addition to the two Vic & Angelo’s, the restaurateur’s also a principal in DeVito on South Beach, The Office hit Atlantic Avenue with all the fanfare of a marching band. Little did anyone know though, that its members were all foodies, or that once the band marched in, they’d never, ever leave. How else to explain the fact that getting a table takes both the luck of the Irish and the patience of a saint? That hasn’t seemed to stop folks from trying though; if anything it’s only made them even more determined to get their fill of what’s been billed as a “modern American gastropub.”

Recently opened, by veteran restaurateur Burt Rapoport, in a relatively secluded spot on the Intracoastal, Deck 84’s almost hideaway location is a boon to the kinda diner who enjoys a conversation with their meal. That’s not to say folks aren’t showing up, mind you. But that those who do tend to know where they’re going, and they’re happy to be having an experience unlike what’s generally found on Atlantic Avenue. Besides, who doesn’t dig a reasonably-priced, waterside restaurant?

Founded in 1935 by father and son Charles and Boughton, who took over after the inn’s initial designer (Martin L. Hampton) bowed out in 1926 The Colony remains one of Delray Beach’s most revered landmarks. Back in the proverbial day, the hotel only opened seasonally. In 1948 a second Colony started serving summer guests in Kennebunkport. As the town became a year-round destination, the Mediterranean marvel followed suit and it hasn’t been closed a day since 1990. Over the years, the Colony’s attracted an impressive collection of guests, yet none of them quite as notorious as the ghosts of its founders, who allegedly continue to watch over their property.

Home of Delray’s first mayor (John Shaw Sundy) and site of numerous Delray milestones (including the signing of the cities incorporation papers) this structure has not only earned a spot on National Register of Historic places, it epitomizes the need for such a list. Built in 1902 on what was the highest ground in the town, the House housed several generations of Sundy’s until 1987 when Sadie Sundy finally said goodbye. Though an earlier attempt to turn landmark into an antique shop and tearoom ultimately failed, the initial restoration of the dwelling and grounds undoubtedly allowed for Sundy house to become the boutique inn and restaurant it is today.

Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. That’s apparently what happened to Nicole Olden, who was so miffed by her spa that she went out and started her own. Six years later, the formed Smith Barney VP presides over an 11,000 square foot spa which houses seven outdoor cabanas, a tanning pool and private areas for men and women featuring waterfall showers. Additionally, the ‘Eleven’ brand boasts its own line of skincare products, baby apparel, a boutique and a partnership with PlumTV. If that wasn’t enough, Oden’s preparing to open another (22,0000 square foot) facility in Las Vegas.

t was an opportunity; it was a complete reverie. To write about anything…on Lacrosse, I immediately, thought of two seemingly dead-end references: my picturesque childhood at the Ellis School for girls, and subsequently, my never-ending crush on T.S., a boy who played Lacrosse at my boarding school. Yes, I played Lacrosse as a young girl, and he was a varsity athlete, who held my attention for three full years, in all his Viking godliness. Lacrosse is just one of those sports played by Holden Caulfield, and the boys from “The Dead Poets Society.” I mean, didn’t everyone play lacrosse when they were young? Or, is it just what we did on my side of the country. The question evolved, I knew there must be so much more.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE AND FACTS ABOUT THE GAME Abandoning fashion for the moment, personal experience is a great starting point. At the Ellis School for Girls, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Lacrosse was a seasonal, mandatory, gym practice. We played in the fields behind the old Nabisco factory, our rigorous morning drills in usually frigid weather, which were eased, by the fragrance of sweet, baking crackers melting into the air. I’ll not soon forget those memories, and the tantalizing morning scent, keeping me company with my lacrosse stick and Mrs. Francomb’s pounding voice. Straight to Pittsburgh from Germany, first generation, she taught us the intricacies of stick and ball technique with her severe European accent and thick stodgy physic. She was downright frightening, and if I remember clearly, a consistent shade of grey from head to toe. Fear of Mrs. Francomb made most of us a quick study for whatever sport-du-jour was served. I ended up uncharacteristically being a left-handed Lacrosse player, although in my field hockey, tennis and golf games I was always right-handed. We were taught Lacrosse as soon as we were big enough to hold a stick and charge. There are essentially four types of Lacrosse games played today worldwide, including men and women’s teams-Soft, Box, Field and Polo.

FASHION, FEAR, & JUST THE FACTS

here are facts and plenty of statistics about the game. Fearing this from the onset, with a burst of unidentified willpower, I decided to tailor this article to my most sincere interests. I focused singlehandedly on the impact that Lacrosse may hold over the fashion industry. Getting ahead of myself, I determined to insert ambiguous implications of future influence in the ready-to-wear collections worldwide, or at least resurrections of elegance lost. Why fashion and Lacrosse seemed an obviously compatible pairing, and focal point for this article, now escapes me. I recently heard mention of Lacrosse on the latest season of “America’s Next Top Model”. For those Lacrosse fans out there who watch the show, you might remember that one of the final four contestants was a tenacious Lacrosse player. Obviously, it was time to get the facts.

Soft Lacrosse is for beginners, usually played in gym classes, and covers the most basic techniques. It is like the bunny slopes for an aspiring Lacrosse athlete. It is a wonderful introduction to the game, and ideal for the gentle player, who just wants to have simple fun. Lacrosse in general, is an action packed, vigorous sport, so Soft Lacrosse, is almost an oxymoron. I remember a few classmates, who would have preferred Soft Lacrosse to what Mrs. Francomb was teaching. Box, or Indoor Lacrosse, is a game with six to a team, played indoors, and introduced to Western Civilization from Canada in the 1930’s. The original idea was to cover ice hockey rinks with artificial turf, presumably during off-season, in order to sustain a necessary level of revenue. The game enjoys some unique twists, such as the 30-second shot clock where each team must take a shot at the goal within 30 seconds of possession, and more technical issues, such as shorter stick requirements. It’s a lot of fun. We played a modified version of Indoor Lacrosse in middle school on the gymnasium basketball courts, when the weather outside was unseasonable. I must mention that the ball, which is made of a very hard rubber, had a tendency to ‘bounce’ with merciless speed and velocity, causing not-unsubstantial injury if you were caught in the line of fire. However, all-in-all fun was had by those who embraced it.

Most popular is Men’s Field Lacrosse, notorious and traditionally American, reinterpreted from our European ancestors, who modernized the game, which originally came from the Native North Americans. Today it is a two goal, offense vs. defense, 10 to a team endeavor, played on a football-sized field with lots of action and enthusiasm required. Running, body and stick checking, and four-quarter play comprise the basic structure. Get the ball in the opposing goal, which is usually 6 feet by 6 feet wide. Thematically compared to Rugby, Hockey, Basketball and Soccer, this is a fast moving activity, requiring immense stamina to run, and technical skill, which is required for the stick work. Padding, of course, is mandatory. A small fact about Woman’s Field Lacrosse is that there are three times as many Women’s Lacrosse teams today than there were in 1990. This popularity would account for my hearing about it in the mainstream life-style venue, such as “America’s Next Top Model”. Woman’s Lacrosse is similar to men’s, sans the body checking, which I always thought was a nice advantage, considering we didn’t have to wear as much padding as the boys. Less padding equals faster play! It is really all about the running, unless you are playing Polocrosse, which brings us to our fifth style, and most recently popularized version of Lacrosse. Also re-invented in 1930’s, in both England and Australia, this sport was originally intentioned to teach horseback riding, and has since been coined the poor-man’s Polo. I will discuss this in more depth to follow.

HISTORY AND RITUALS With savage prestige, Lacrosse is considered America’s first sport. It was conjured and developed by the North American Natives over centuries, ‘discovered’ by the French, and adopted and refined by European immigrants around the 1900’s. In eighth grade, I was on the JV (woman’s field) Lacrosse team. Our school had three teams to cover the 3-season year: Field Hockey for the fall, Basketball for the winter, and Lacrosse in the spring. Arbitrarily, I was left-handed at Lacrosse, I was thrilled, not to mention intrigued, to discover this. Later, I discovered that this is not unusual. Part of any sport, worth its weight in equipment, is the rituals of battle. I remember ‘taping up my stick’, too elaborately perhaps, to keep the plastic end-cap in place, and to give some grip on the shaft. Also, I can remember molding my mouth guard each year, in the boiling water on our electric stove, with my mom helping me. And, of course, finding the right kneepads, which was always very important. No helmets back then, or eye gear, but you can see those trends today. What I remember most from Lacrosse was lots of running, throwing, scooping and dodging the wickedly hard ball, which could leave a huge bump, if it hit you in the shins, which happened often enough. Fearless youth get the most enjoyment out of this game.

istorically, Lacrosse was the first American Sport. The Native Americans for all kinds of reasons conceived it. Here are the top 10 Lacrosse facts I never knew: Lacrosse is considered the first American Sport, created by the North American Natives. Eventually dubbed “Tewaarathon” (Little Brother of War), the game was used to prepare young men for warfare, and to develop their fortitude and manliness. Aside from preparing warriors, Tewaarathon was practiced to study the ‘art’ of war, to resolve conflict, to ritualistically heal the sick, and played spiritually, for ceremony, which was thought to be a gift from their creator. Thus, by playing the game, this gift was given back to their creator in thanks. The Natives would decorate themselves, and their sticks, with elaborate war paint before games. Ceremonial dances and feasts occurred before and after the games. Games could last for days, and involve hundreds of men. Goals for these games could be set miles apart.

In my recent examination of Lacrosse, I feel as though the pure beauty of this sport is still an enchanting gift from our predecessors. Luckily, it has not changed too much in spirit. The level of enthusiasm required to endure such strenuous sporting today has not waned, but stayed central to the spirit of the game. The reader might ask now, what was the transformation, which brought their game to ours? Essentially, it was composed of three parts: the Europeans, civilization, and yes, time management.

Side betting was a ritualistic part of the first Lacrosse games, between women folk, family friends, as well as enemies. Balls were made of deerskin, clay, stone, and wood. (That hasn’t changed too much.)

Discovered by the French Jesuit missionaries, it was the English who reduced the Tawaarathon ‘ceremony’ from days and days, into the 90-minute (plus/minus) gesture of war training we know today. They called it civilization, and renamed it ‘Lacrosse’. Lacrosse has since clung close to the East Coast, stretching down to Florida, and up through Canada, with pockets of historical Lacrosse play found in Colorado, Texas, and some Mid-Atlantic States (such as Pennsylvania). Recently, Lacrosse is gaining popularity in the South and Mid-Western states. And, many versions of the game are enjoyed internationally, specifically the Polocrosse invention in countries as far reaching as Dubai, and Australia, although equal attention is given in our own Unites States of America, and of course South America.

AN INSANELY ELEGANT SPORT FEATURES

POLOCROSSE AND FINALLY, FASHION “Nothing goes out of fashion faster, than fashion”, as my painting teacher would pontificate every time we met for class, (I believe he was the author). And, for the four years I heard this, and much like the saying “I can’t win for losing”, I never really understood what he meant.. I couldn’t translate it, or break down the sentence, into a discernible message that would spiritually or emotionally transcend. Both of these sayings are contradictory, but maybe that’s the whole point-- and in the contradiction comes a disguised sarcasm of personal defeat. I challenge the notion that Lacrosse is both fashionable and everlasting. Let’s start with Polocrosse, Lacrosse with horses. As of late, it is both fashionable, and a winning combination of two awesome sports: Polo and Lacrosse. Perhaps in this compromise of rules and regulations, you may have heard Polocrosse heralded as the ‘poorman’s polo’. It is more accessible to play than Polo proper, and played with a relaxed but ever rugged joie de vivre. Outlined earlier, Polocrosse dates back hundreds of years, but was ‘cultivated’ by the English, to teach riding to gentlemen, and exercise the horses. Today it is very popular in countries such as Australia, Dubai, England, and our own Southern United States. Matches consist of 4-6 players in (8) minute periods called ‘chukkahs’. The end-goal is the same as in Lacrosse, and playing fields replicate those of Polo, both indoors and out. Word on the street, this game is Rugby on horseback. It’s simple, fast and rough- most notably because of the body checking. The challenge in this game, of course, is the immense balance required to make contact with the other players while on horseback. Strategically, player assignment is key; the players are each designated to an opponent, one-on-one, for the entire game. I should add that there is no switching of horses throughout. One of the main physical concentrations during the game is to get the ball out of your opponents stick, and, of course, to score goals! Players of Polocrosse are adrenaline junkies, lovers of speed and action, and reports from fans are always two thumbs up! Finally, as a fashion influence, let’s examine the fall 2010 Menswear Line for GANT, by American Fashion Designer Michael Bastian. You heard it hear first: the ‘elegant’ game of Lacrosse is where scholars become ‘primitive’, and where Machiavellian violencemeets-the-Harvard-elite. Recently, I watched a gorgeous video on YouTube of Michael’s design process and personal mission; it brought me right back to boarding school, and my admiration of T.S. After school, he marched across the green open fields, carrying his lacrosse stick, adorned with sweat and dirt from the games. Mr. Basian has captured the knightly character, equipped with tousled hair and warrior instinct. The line comprises sweaters, jackets, shirts, scarves and pants: all emblazoned with a lacrosse player in silhouette. He designs in preparatory school colors for our American men, capturing the essence of education, sports, and regality all in one.

It really did put my inquiring mind to rest, that a sport as calculating, yet ethereal as Lacrosse, could transcend into an established American fashion house. In addition, Mr. Bastion was smart enough to seize the opportunity, seeing this sport of class and integrity, and combining its essence with his own vision and making it into today’s fashion. Founded by our Native Americans, it has crossed every border, been adapted to modern sport cross-training trends, and to gender equality. Lacrosse has settled into everyday life. Lacrosse literally means ‘the game of the hooked stick’, and for this writer, it is proof, that anything is within reach, if you want it enough. Just ask the players.
