Twinspire #58  January 2015 Looking Forward …. What Does That Mean ??

As I sit in my study I’m looking forward to this year …. and what it may bring for myself and Sheila …. for my kids and my grandchildren …. and for Polmont Old as it goes about the business of seeking a new minister.

What was going on in my head?

How did I manage to jump from one subject to another and yet still feel there was a strong link that allowed me to see it as looking forward?

We might be surprised at what we are capable of dealing with at one time, making a coffee, turning on the computer, remembering I was asked to empty the dishwasher, yet, would I say that I was overloaded? No, that’s just what fills my head and my life. However taking the time to reflect is important because it allows you to recognise that action needs a period of reflection first.

What fills my heart in these moments of quiet reflection?

Is it love for self, love for others and love for God? Just like the above scenario when I am multi-tasking (don’t let them tell you men don’t multi-task) I know I can carry a concern about all of those in my life and those people and events that I am drawn to.

How do I know this?

Experience, much of which you will share, being able to think of our relationships, our concerns for others and what we will add to their lives, all give confidence that what we have to offer is important. So with the confidence that you can add something to many people….

What do you look forward to??

Maybe a better question is how do you look forward? It is not easy, or comfortable, to be challenged by new things, new people and new expectations of self and of others. The past may seem to be more comfortable but that may well be because it is familiar and there is no responsibility or major desire to change.

Let’s stay with how we look forward.

Are we ready to do things differently without feeling we are not appreciated for our past efforts? Are we expecting to be challenged and to grow in relationships and in faith? Journeying with Jesus the disciples were often shunted out of their comfort zone, are you maybe recognising that will be a demand on you when Polmont Old gets a new minister?

Have you noticed how many questions are in this letter?

Never have my typing skills been challenged with finding the question mark key on my keyboard. It is not generally the most used key in the machine. That might lead me to another question. Faith is a journey not without its own questions and, until we are comfortable and confident in allowing ourselves to ask our questions, we can’t grow.

So this is a good time to allow yourself a period of reflection, a time of questioning and an expectation of change, of looking forward not just to new events or people, time or places, but a major challenge to become a more outgoing family of faith.

As you are reading this letter some important events will have taken place. Please make sure you are part of these events and that you use your reflection time to help you make decisions and commitments to the changes that face all of us. Remember that In Psalm 119 Verse 105 we are given the assurance from God that ….

“Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.”

In this reassurance you will have the company of God Almighty as you reflect and consider the future.

Twinspire #58  January 2015 Some time ago someone gave me a copy of this hymn as being suitable for the beginning of a new year, or a new chapter in our lives. As you read it, just think about the year 2015, and what plans you have made. But at the same time, ask yourself the question: “What have I done today?”

EDITOR’S RAMBLINGS Happy New Year! I hope that you all spent quality time with family and friends over the Festive season, and are now back into the swing of things with a renewed vigour!

What have we done today?

Did anyone make any New Year resolutions? And have you broken any yet? It’s not something I can ever recall doing very often – I probably knew that I would break them in the first week!!

We shall give our gold in a princely sum, But what did we give today?

We shall lift the heart, and dry the tear, We shall plant true peace in the place of fear, We shall speak the words of love and cheer, But what did we speak today?

January – supposedly named after the God Janus from Roman mythology – the twoheaded God who was able to look to the future as well back to the past at the same time. So do you and I. Your past is what makes you, but at the beginning of a new year we tend to look to the year ahead and wonder what it might bring.

We shall be so kind in the after while, But what have we been today?

We shall bring to each lonely life a smile, But what have we brought today?

We shall give to truth a grander birth, And to steadfast faith a deeper worth, We shall feed the hungering souls of earth, But whom have we fed today?

January is the month when people begin to plan a holiday, whether it is a trip abroad or just a tour of our beautiful country.

Some people may be looking forward to a new job, or retirement; our young folks will be looking ahead to exams and their futures at college or university, or a new career in the “big wide world of business”.

We shall reap such joys in the by and by, But what have we sown today?

We shall build us mansions in the sky, But what have we built today? ’Tis sweet in idle dreams to bask, But here and now do we do our task?

Yes, this is the thing our souls must ask— What have we done today?

Some families will be looking forward to a new baby, a wedding or a special birthday or anniversary celebration.

In Polmont Old we are looking ahead excitedly, and with apprehension, to a new chapter in the history of our church. It is now over a year since Jerome left and David arrived as our locum, and by the time you receive this copy of Twinspire, we may be on the brink of a new ministry in our church. I do hope that as many members as possible will take (or took) the opportunity to attend morning worship on Sunday 25th January and hear the candidate which the nominating committee has proposed could lead Polmont Old into this new ministry.

Your attendance, your vote and your ongoing commitment to Polmont Old is vitally important at this time.

POEM/PRAYER COLUMN My Dear Friends

I SAID A PRAYER FOR YOU TODAY

I am overwhelmed by all your lovely cards and good wishes. Thank you all very much.

I said a prayer for you today I know God must have heard I felt the answer in my heart Although He spoke no word.

I have settled in very well in my new home – Surprised myself!! The residents are really friendly and the staff can’t do enough for you.

I didn’t ask for wealth or fame (I knew you wouldn’t mind) I asked him to send treasures Of a far more lasting kind.

The family did so well to find this apartment for me. The view is looking over the garden with trees at the bottom and the river Aire flowing by – sounds quite poetic!

I asked that He be near you At the start of each new day To grant you health and blessings And friends to share the way.

Christmas was wonderful – 17 of us. I attended the great grandchildren’s Nativity plays, Christmas services and Christmas productions which was very emotional.

I asked for happiness for you In all things great and small But it was for His loving care I prayed the most of all.

I have been attending the Parish Church with Denise and receive a very warm welcome, but it is not “Polmont Old” which I really miss. But services are held here and although only a few residents attend, I really enjoy them. There are 2 communion services and one evening service each month.

I have already given up on cooking. A very nice lunch is served in the dining room each day.

Guests can be invited, so Denise comes on Sunday after church. Tea and coffee served in the lounge after lunch, mid-morning and afternoon. There are lots of activities going on through the week.

He is a very caring Friend He answers my every prayer and if I’m feeling lonely I know He’s always there

MY BEST FRIEND You ask Who my Best Friend is Jesus is His name Although at times I fail Him He loves me just the same.

Although the answer to my prayer May be Yes or No I’m sure He knows what’s best for me Because he loves me so.

A wonderful buffet lunch on Boxing day and New Year’s day. Chef and the dining room staff really serve us well.

WINDOWS OF HEAVEN The windows of Heaven are open The Blessings are falling tonight There’s Joy, Joy, Joy in my heart For Jesus made everything right.

All of the facilities make for a very comfortable life and I am sure I shall continue to be very happy. Please keep in touch. I would love to hear from you.

CHURCH FINANCES

Firstly, on behalf of 2nd Polmont Boys’ Brigade, I would like to wish all Twinspire readers a Happy New Year and all the best for 2015.

I hope you all had a nice Christmas spending time with family and friends and that Santa brought you everything you asked for.

The Finance Committee has prepared the accounts for 2014 which reveal that the Church’s expenditure exceeded the income by about £16,000.

2015 will be a very challenging year and we look forward to some fundraising efforts. Further detail will be made available when we hold the AGM proposed for Sunday 1st March.

Well, it’s the start of a new year and new beginnings for all of us, I’m sure that everyone has made their New Year’s resolutions and I am no exception, my New Year’s resolution is to stop eating a lot of junk food and to get fitter and stronger, I just hope that I can stick to it, as I sometimes have trouble with that, especially where chocolate is concerned, haha.

Meanwhile on the positive side, we continue to look for grants to cover the refurbishment of the church, the halls and the manse.

FELLOWSHIP NEWS

2015 will also be a big year for many of us in one way or another, whether it is a special birthday, a wedding, or a birth in the family. I have a special event this year, as it will be my 21st birthday.

The Fellowship is looking forward to new beginnings in 2015, though always mindful and proud of what it has achieved in the past. As 2015 marks the 120th anniversary of the founding of the Woman’s Guild (now Fellowship) in Polmont, it is quite uplifting and inspiring to think of all the work done by the members of this group over the years and to realise the work the Church still has to do today.

Before we broke up for the Christmas break, 2nd Polmont Boys’ Brigade did a last minute bagpack event on the 20th December, at Tesco’s store in Redding. This event raised the magnificent sum of £514.79, a tremendous effort by all the boys who attended. These boys are not only a credit to themselves and the community but they are also a credit to 2nd Polmont Boys’ Brigade.

Earlier this year we enjoyed Jean and Phil Glen’s illustrated talk on their holiday in Vietnam and Cambodia. They will be followed on 26th January by a speaker from the National Guild project which helps unemployed women in deprived areas of Scotland to start their own businesses.

Also, some of our boys recently took part in the Boys’ Brigade national table tennis competition, held on the 7th January; unfortunately though we were beaten by 44th Glasgow Company, who is one of the top teams in Britain. I'm sure everyone will agree that the boys did exceptionally well to get to the third round of the competition.

On 9th February we will hold our annual fundraising event in aid of the National projects, including the above, and another which helps people fleeing from Africa to find refuge in Malta as they search for their new beginnings. We are fortunate to have the Brightons Praise Group to help us in our efforts with a wide-ranging musical programme to be held in the Church Hall at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £5 and are available from Fellowship members.

The next event for us this year is our Burns Supper, which will be held on Friday the 6th February in the Greenpark Centre. Tickets for this event are on sale now at a cost of £15 per head. It is a great night out and this year promises to be bigger and better than last year. Tickets are selling fast, so get your tickets early to avoid disappointment.

Twinspire #58  January 2015 Our Christmas Party was on the 18th December when an evening of fun and games with pizzas was enjoyed by all. We even had a visit from Santa.

2nd Polmont Boys’ Brigade ANCHOR BOYS The Anchor Boys had a very fun and entertaining Christmas Carol Concert which was held on Thursday 11th December at the Church Hall. We raised £190 from tickets, raffle and craft stall. We made a donation to Rachel House and we have received a very nice thank you letter and certificate from them.

We will be attending the annual Anchor Boy Fun Day on Saturday 31st January at Larbert Old Parish Church, when we will have a fun afternoon playing games, doing craft and watching a Puppet Show.

Many thanks to all the helpers for their hard work and enthusiasm each week.

On Saturday 6 December both the Anchor Boys and Junior Section went to the Falkirk Town Hall to the Christmas Panto, ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’. It was a fun afternoon with lots of singing and clapping.

Twinspire #58  January 2015 Mention must be made of the Orchestra who added such colour and drama to the evening - a mixture of young students cutting their teeth in this testing repertoire, with seasoned professional players, ably led by Sarah Cameron.

The Church Choir also presented the mellifluous setting by Howard Goodall of Charles Wesley’s words, ‘Love divine, all loves excelling’ – a great addition to their repertoire.

ALISON WRITES: January seems such a quiet month for the choir, after the hustle and bustle of the festive season – time to put another log on the fire, and reflect on the various events:

It was very striking, hearing the Guitar Ensemble play (from Graeme High School, directed by David Burke), what a quality of listening there was in this ensemble: with string players, you always have the visual help of seeing bows moving, but here, there was an evident stillness and concentration in the performance, which really drew the audience in.

7 December It was always going to be hard to surpass the concerts of previous years: this time the audience were treated to further delights provided by our Parish performers and their guests – with a few new twists and variations. Compère for the afternoon was the inimitable Nanette Hotchkiss, who prefaced her remarks with a tribute to Alex Watson, wishing him speedy recovery and return to good health.

Another treat was the transportive playing of Emilia Fazzone (Graeme High School), with Einaudi’s rippling composition, L’Onde.

Every concert programme needs that lighter spot, when world-weary audiences are brought up short, and involuntarily gasp at the wonderful idealism of youthful performers. The Christmas nd play, presented by 2 Polmont Girls’ Brigade, (under the leadership of Tracey O’Brien), with puppetry, dance and song, was one such occasion.

‘Once in royal David’s city’ opened the programme; starting from the hushed opening alto solo (taken by Jean Kinniburgh), augmented by the harmonious church choir, with Alan Hastie’s organ accompaniment blossoming as the full orchestra joined in, and the rafters just about raised when the entire audience gave voice to the well-loved carol.

The finale brought together “just a’body” (including rising star drummer, Andrew McKechnie) in ‘White Christmas’ and ‘Jingle Bells’. The vote of thanks was eloquently given by Mr David Wandrum, rounding off a very splendid concert.

St Margaret’s Primary was well represented by the belle-plate group with Katie Orrick on violin, giving us an enchanting version of Silent Night (directed by Miss Claire Harris). Later, young Katie played the solo ‘O Holy Night’ with great musicality; and we were treated to a some very festive duets (and topical jokes!) by the young pianists, Jack Cunningham, Aidan Cooper, Alistair Fraser, Rory Massie, Rosie Keenan, Elvie Maclean, Logan Smith, Louis Ainsley and Ewan Fraser.

To make this event succeed requires people to respond to the challenge; not only in performing, but also in preparation, setting up the venue, designing publicity, providing technical support, and hospitality for our guests. Thanks to all for the hard work!

The proceeds from the concert, after expenses, came to £1315. £1000 is to be directed to church funds; the remainder shall be divided between 3 beneficiaries (£105 each) – Strathcarron Hospice, nd 2 Polmont Girls’ Brigade, and Falkirk and Clackmannanshire Carers’ Centre. As a means of fund-raising, the parish concert has once more proved a success; but for me the even greater joy is in giving the youngsters (and oldsters) a platform, and having everyone come together, combining their talents to make a feast of an event, for all to enjoy.

Our eclectic programme featured guitar/vocalist Eilidh Park (Graeme High School) giving a spirited performance of ‘White Christmas’ ; Emerald Jeffrey ‘rocking the joint’ with ‘All I want for Christmas is you’ – and to demonstrate the gamut of contrasting vocal style, from the world of classical music, opera star Mark Ashmore gave a most dramatic and electrifying rendition of Handel’s Aria from ‘Messiah, ‘But who may abide the day of His coming’ , preceded by the glorious chorus ‘Glory to God!’ triumphantly presented by our own Church Choir.

Music Bequest

Polmont Old Parish Church Choir has been delighted to welcome new members, Alec Brown, and Sheena Farrell this season, with guest members Jean Preston, Kenneth Robb and Mark Ashmore. Sadly missed is Mel Hawkins, who contributed so much to the choir, by singing, and playing his beloved cornet – and simply being a good friend and inspiration to all.

The kind bequest by Mrs Dianne Nicol continues to be put to practical use, having made possible the purchase of: 1. The new keyboard for the church, useful as back-up for the pipe organ, especially now that initial problems with cabling connections have been resolved – thanks, Jamie and John!

It was played at the Sound of Christmas concert, using both piano and harpsichord sounds.

2. 5 music stands, which came in very useful at the concert.

3. The set of 50 Complete Mission Praise Hymn books, including 2 in the large print edition. 18 of the hymn books are in weekly use by the choir, the remainder are on hand when required; also 4 Full Music Editions of Complete Mission Praise, for choir use.

4. The shiny new drum kit, which had its first splendid outing in the hands of young Andrew McKechnie in the grand finale of the ‘Sounds of Christmas’ concert.

Community Carol singing took place at Maddiston Primary School with the Salvation Army Band on the th 19 ; and we performed two Christmas selection concerts in the week preceding ‘The Sound of Christmas’ - for our friends in The Falkirk Blind Club at Westfield Stadium on the 2nd, and for Age Concern Wednesday Club on the 3rd. Jean Kinniburgh gave a splendid rendition, complete with cosmetic dental adjustment, of ‘All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth’ – which was warmly received. The Choir, bravely wrapped against the cold, and with some welcome volunteers, sang carols at th the Polmont Christmas Market on the 20 .

There were no formal Lessons and Carols this year, instead a series of Advent Meditations, from the perspective of various observers involved in the Christmas Story. However, at Watchnight, the choir performed the ancient Christmas hymn, ‘Gaudete, gaudete! Christus est natus’ (Translation: ‘Rejoice, rejoice! Christ is born!’) which is thought to have been composed in the 16th century, but may have existed as a hymn in the late medieval period. The song was first published in Piae Cantiones, 1582. In 1973 the electric folk group Steeleye Span had a hit (No.14 in the UK singles chart) with an a cappella recording of the song. This single is one of only three top 50 British hits to be sung in

Future plans Some sort of collaborative musical event with other local churches? A Spring Flower Festival has been mentioned. Thinking caps on!

TRY SOMETHING NEW IN 2015!

Adults: The Fellowship is part of the Church of Scotland Guild and meets twice a month from September to March. The programme is varied and interesting and you do not have to be a member of the church – or of the Fellowship – to attend one of the events.

The Scottish Women’s Rural Institute (SWRI) hold monthly meetings for talks and demonstrations from September to May. If you have a craft and would like to share it with like-minded people, or if you are enthusiastic about learning new crafts and skills, you will be welcome at Twinspire Crafters. The History Group meets once a month for those interested in local and social history.

If your New Year resolution is to try something new, meet new people or get some exercise, there is plenty going on in the Church Hall these days. Why not find out more about any of the following groups, which meet in our hall?

Babies and new parents: Local Health Visitors organise a buggy walk from the hall at 12.30pm on Mondays, returning to the hall at 1pm for the Baby Group, where babies can play, and new parents can chat and enjoy a cuppa.

For some gentle exercise, Lishi (a form of Tai Chi) continues the ancient Chinese system of philosophy and exercise, designed to protect, invigorate, de-stress and rejuvenate mind and body.

Physio Led Pilates is a form of low impact exercise to strengthen core muscles, improve general flexibility, promote good posture.

It may help ease and prevent muscular aches and pains, and correct postural alignment.

For more traditionally Scottish (and vigorous!) exercise the RSCDS’s Scottish Country Dance class meets on a Wednesday.

Pre-school children: at Physi-Ball, toddlers can develop gross motor skills, such as balance and co-ordination, through physical exercise, using balls, hoops and other equipment. Jo Jingles is a music, singing and movement experience, where babies and children can sing, dance and try out a range of musical instruments. UKTC Little Tigers is a TaekwonDo class – a fun martial arts training system for 35 year olds. Did you know Taekwon-Do means “The Art of Hand and Foot Fighting”? At Froggie Friends, pre-school children can sing, play, make some craft and enjoy a healthy snack. Parents or carers accompany their children at all the preschool activities.

School Age children: we have Brownies, Girls’ Brigade, and various sections of the Boys’ Brigade. The Girls’ Brigade is currently looking for more helpers, so even adults can get involved! The BBs’ Junior Section recently moved to our hall from the Greenpark Centre, so please check the Hall Diary (elsewhere in Twinspire) for new times on a Friday evening.

Our newest group is the Evolve Dance Academy, a musical theatre class, where primary school children work on dancing, singing and acting combined. At The Grid, young people aged 1218 can watch a film together, then break into groups for a discussion on the themes of the film and how they are relevant to their own life and Christian life.

The Wednesday Club is a branch of Age Scotland, where you can meet for a blether, a cup of tea and enjoy an hour's entertainment.

All Ages: The idea of Messy Church is to provide a more informal, family and community based idea of Church that would appeal to people who have little connection with formal church structures, or who are just keen to try something different.

Over the past 20 years the Thursday Lunch Bunch has provided inexpensive snack lunches and a chance to meet friends old and new.

We are looking forward to the installation of a new boiler. As you may be aware, the installation has been beset by a series of issues. We sincerely hope these will be resolved by the time Twinspire goes to print and that you will enjoy a “warm” welcome on your next visit to the hall.

ADVENT MEDITATIONS During morning worship on the Sundays leading up to Christmas, the Minister included a series of Advent meditations, which were read by members of the congregation. These were taken from the same book from which he had taken the Lenten meditations, which I featured in various issues of Twinspire last year. The book is called No Ordinary Man: Resources for reflective worship on the person of Jesus by Nick Fawcett. Although these Advent meditations reflect the thoughts of the various people who witnessed the birth of Jesus all those years ago, they are still relevant to Christians today. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

IT WAS JUST AN ORDINARY DAY SHEPHERDS It was just an ordinary day, that's what I can't get over; nothing special about it, nothing different, just another ordinary day.

And we were all just ordinary people, that's what made it even more puzzling; not important, not influential, just plain ordinary shepherds out working in the fields.

Yet we apparently were the first, singled out for special favour!

The first to know, the first to see, the first to celebrate, the first to tell!

I'm still not sure what happened – one moment night drawing in, and the next bright as day; one moment laughing and joking together, and the next rooted to the spot in amazement; one moment looking forward to getting home, and the next hurrying down to Bethlehem.

There just aren't words to express what we felt, but we knew we had to respond, had to go and see for ourselves.

Not that we expected to find anything mind you, not if we were honest.

Well, you don't, do you?

I mean, it's not every day the Messiah arrives, is it?

Twinspire #58  January 2015 And we'd always imagined when he finally did it would be in a blaze of glory, to a fanfare of trumpets, with the maximum of publicity.

Yet do you know what?

When we got there it was to find everything just as we had been told, wonderfully special, yet surprisingly ordinary.

Not Jerusalem but Bethlehem, not a palace but a stable, not a prince enthroned in splendour but a baby lying in a manger.

We still find it hard to believe even now, to think God chose to come through that tiny vulnerable child.

But as the years have passed – and we've seen not just his birth but his life, and not just his life but his death, and not just his death but his empty tomb, his grave clothes, his joyful followers – we've slowly came to realise it really was true.

God had chosen to come to us, and more than that, to you – to ordinary, everyday people, in the most ordinary, everyday of ways.

How extraordinary!

IT WAS AS THOUGH A WAVE OF PEACE ENGULFED ME SIMEON Reading: Luke 2.25-35 Meditation It was as though a wave of peace engulfed me, a great surge of tranquillity flooding my soul with a quietness beyond expression for I held him in my arms, God's promised Messiah – there, in that little wrinkled face, that tiny, vulnerable child staring up at me, the fulfilment of God's eternal purpose.

Twinspire #58 ď – January 2015 I just can't tell you what that meant to me, not only the joy but the relief I felt, for there had been times when my faith had begun to waver.

No, I don't just mean my conviction that I'd see the Messiah's coming, though I did question that sometimes, it's true.

It went deeper than that, to the very heart of my faith, to those words of the prophet about us being a light to the Gentiles, bringing glory to God through our life and witness.

I’d always believed that implicitly, the vision stirring my imagination and firing my faith, but over the years the flame had begun to splutter, doused by the harsh realities which surrounded me.

The fact is we'd turned inwards rather than outwards, our concern more for ourselves than the world beyond, and, if anything, our horizons were growing narrower by the day.

It was understandable, of course, the oppression we'd suffered across the centuries enough to dampen anyone's fervour, but that didn't make it any easier to stomach, still less offer any grounds for hope.

Could things change, I wondered?

Was there really any chance we might recapture that old spark, that sense of sharing in the divine purpose, testifying to his glory, or was that dream destined to die for ever?

It was impossible not to ask it.

But that day, there in the temple, suddenly it all changed faith vindicated, hope realised for I knew then beyond all doubt that God had been faithful to his purpose, His chosen servant there in my arms, the one who would bring light to the world, salvation to all.

I saw him with my own eyes, touched him with my own hands, and after that I could die happy, my joy complete, my faith rekindled, my soul at peace.

Twinspire #58  January 2015 Santa made an entrance to "Jingle Bells" and gifts were handed out to the children before they returned to school. After a festive tea, the Wednesday Club Choir sang carols by candlelight joined by 3 members of our church choir. A very happy time ended with a lovely vote of thanks to our hard working committee given by Nanette Hotchkiss.

WEDNESDAY CLUB Welcome to 2015 and a Happy New Year to all our readers.

Here is an update on what has been happening at the Wednesday Club.

November 19th Walter Williamson, MBE, new to the club, was a great Scottish entertainer. He sang many songs and had everyone laughing at his funny stories.

He also plays in a group and is Captain of the 2nd Bo'ness Company of the Boy's Brigade - a very busy gentleman.

2015 January 10th Our annual dinner at the Greenpark Centre was again a great success with 80 attending. This year we had new caterers from Larbert, and they provided an excellent meal which everyone enjoyed.

November 26th Still with a Scottish theme, we had a team of country dancers. Jean Kinniburgh from the church choir gave the dancers a break by singing and reciting poems.

Morag Robertson from Larbert accompanied the dances with a great selection of Scottish music.

We also had excellent entertainment from "The Mary Rose Sound" and the children from the Broadway School of Performing Arts were amazing. The talent and confidence of these young children was superb. Thanks must also go to the Greenpark Centre for the use of the premises for Age Concern events.

November 28th Our annual fundraiser in the Greenpark Centre was again a great success. A company of 100 was entertained by Cockleroy from Linlithgow. A light supper was provided and everyone enjoyed their evening.

January 14th This should have been our first meeting after the festive season but unfortunately due to bad weather conditions, it was decided to cancel it. Our starting date will now be January 21st if the weather has improved.

December 3rd Polmont Church choir with Alison on the keyboard gave us another lovely afternoon with a great selection of music and song.

It is always a pleasure to have them visit us, and we give a big "Thank You" to Alison for arranging a lovely programme.

A date will be arranged soon for the committee and helpers’ lunch. More dates will be confirmed in the next edition of Twinspire.

Twinspire #58  January 2015 So, if you're not in the winter of your life yet ... let me remind you, that it will be here quicker than you think. So, whatever you would like to accomplish in your life, please do it quickly! Don't put things off too long! Life goes by quickly.

Do what you can today.

AND THEN IT IS WINTER You know ... time has a way of moving quickly and catching you unaware of the passing years. It seems just yesterday that I was young, just married and embarking on my new life with my partner. Yet in a way, it seems like eons ago, and I wonder where all the years went. I know I lived them all. I have photos, and glimpses of how it was back then, and of all my hopes and dreams.

You have no promise that you will see all the seasons of your life ... so live for today and say all the things that you want your loved ones to remember ... and hope that they appreciate and love you for all the things that you have done for them in all the years past!

But, here it is ... the winter of my life and it catches me by surprise ... How did I get here so quickly? Where did the years go and where did my youth go?

"Life" is a gift to you. The way you live your life is your gift to those who come after. Make it a fantastic one. Live it well! Enjoy today! Do something fun! Be happy! Have a great day!

I well remember seeing older people through the years and thinking that those older people were years away from me. Winter was so far off that I could not fathom it or imagine fully what it would be like.

Just think on this: Today is the oldest you’ve ever been yet the youngest you’ll ever be. So enjoy the day while it lasts. ‘Old’ is good in some things: old songs, old movies, and best of all old friends!

But, here it is ... my friends are retired and getting grey...they move more slowly, and I see an older person now. Some are in better and some in worse shape than me ... but, I see the great change ... Not like the ones that I remember who were young and vibrant ... but, like me, their age is beginning to show and we are now those older folks, that we used to see and never thought we'd become.

“Do not regret growing older.

It is a privilege denied to many.”

Each day now, I find that just getting a shower is a real target for the day! And taking a nap is not a treat anymore ... it's mandatory! Because if I don't do it of my own free will ... I just fall asleep where I sit!

And so ... now I enter into this new season of my life unprepared for all the aches and pains, and the loss of strength and ability, to go and do things that I wish I had done, but never did!

But, at least I know, that though winter has come … and I'm not sure how long it will last ... this I know, that when it's over on this earth ... it's over. A new adventure will begin! Yes, I have regrets. There are things I wish I hadn't done ... things I should have done, but indeed, there are many things I'm happy to have done. It's all in a lifetime.

ANNIVERSARIES

Mary was highly regarded by the people she missioned to – she earned the nickname Obongawan Okoyong (Queen of Okoyong). She died there at the age of only 66, after many years of ill health due to various bouts of malaria throughout her yeas in Nigeria.

Although January is a time to look forward to a new year, it is also a time when we acknowledge the achievements of people throughout the centuries. 2015 is no exception.

During this year we will be celebrating the 800th Anniversary of the Magna Carta, the 200th of the Battle of Waterloo, the 750th of the First English Parliament – to give a few examples. However, I hope in this column to highlight smaller, more interesting and little known achievements, as well as Scottish ones, though I do realise that some of the more national and international ones will have a Scottish connection to them.

30th: 50 years since the state funeral of Winston Churchill at St Paul’s Cathedral.

FEBRUARY 1st: 100 years since photographs were required in British passports for the first time. The British Nationality and Status of Aliens Act 1914 was passed on the outbreak of World War I and a new format for passports was introduced in 1915. It was a single sheet folded into eight with a cardboard cover. It included a description of the holder as well as a photograph, and had to be renewed after two years.

I intend to look at this per month, so I will cover January to March in this issue.

JANUARY 8th: 75 years since Britain introduced food rationing. Initially bacon, butter and sugar were rationed. This was followed by successive ration schemes for meat, tea, jam, biscuits, breakfast cereals, cheese, eggs, lard, milk and canned and dried fruit.

4th: 10 years since the founding of YouTube – the most popular video sharing website.

13th: 100 years since the death of Mary Slessor, the Aberdeen born missionary who went to Calabar, in Nigeria and was known for her work among the native peoples, promoting women's rights and rescuing hundreds of unwanted children (in particular twins, who were regarded by the natives as being born of an evil father).

10th: 175 years since the marriage of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert at the Chapel Royal.

11th: 25 years since Nelson Mandela was released from prison after serving 27 years.

15th: 50 years since Canada adopted a new red and white flag depicting the maple leaf, replacing the Union Flag and the Canadian Red Ensign.

26th: 200 years since Napoleon Bonaparte escaped from the Island of Elba where he had been living in exile for a year.

MARCH 4th: 125 years since the opening of the Forth Rail Bridge by the then Prince of Wales, later Edward VII – at that time the longest bridge in Great Brain.

26th: 185 years since the Book of Mormon, the defining sacred text of the Latter Day Saint movement, was first published.

28th: 85 years since Turkey changed the name of its capital city from Constantinople back to Istanbul. How many of you can recall the rhyme we used to repeat as children: “Constantinople is a very big word, if you can’t spell it you’re a very big fool”. The answer, of course, was – “IT”.

10th: 400 years since the Roman Catholic priest, John Ogilvie was hanged Glasgow. The son of a wealthy laird (a Calvinist), he was born in Keith in Banffshire, was educated at various Catholic establishments throughout Europe. In 1596, aged seventeen, he was received into the Catholic Church in Belgium, and joined the Society of Jesus in 1608 and was ordained priest in Paris in 1610. But he was always desperate to return to Glasgow, which he succeeded in doing in 1613. Here he was forced to preach to the few remaining Catholics in the secrecy of private homes. But less than a year later he was betrayed, arrested and jailed in Paisley. After suffering horrendous tortures to force him to divulge the names of other Catholics, which he refused to do, he was hanged at Glasgow Cross for high treason. As a martyr of the Reformation and the Counter-Reformation he was beatified in 1929 and canonised in 1976. He is the only post-Reformation saint from Scotland. His feast day is celebrated on 10 March in the Catholic Church.

Rev Alison Meikle was inducted on Monday 8th December 2014 as Minister of Zetland Parish Church Grangemouth. Rev Alison Meikle was previously the minister at Lanark St Nicholas for 12 years.
