Polk Museum of Art Announces 52nd Mayfaire Feature Poster Artist & Image
The Polk Museum of Art’s annual fine art festival Mayfaire by-the-Lake — presented by Citizens Bank & Trust and The Ruthvens — has officially unveiled the Feature Poster Artist and Image for its 52nd celebration on May 11 & 12, 2024. This year’s image, painted by artist Heather Nagy, features a scene familiar to native Lakelanders and Mayfaire visitors alike: the shores of Lake Morton decorated with wandering waterfowl against the backdrop of colorful lily pads and a vibrant Lakeland sky.
Nagy, a professional artist based in Florida, was inspired to focus her poster image on Lake Morton’s wood storks after discovering that these recognizable wading birds were once on the brink of extinction. Reflecting on the rich wildlife found along the lake, Nagy was touched by nature’s ability to thrive in the face of danger. “Seeing these birds now reminds of the resilience and the beauty that comes when diverse species find ways to live together,” Nagy said. The painting, rendered with bright, candy-colored brushstrokes, is characteristic of Nagy’s award-winning impressionistic style.
A Michigan native, Heather Nagy received her BFA in Graphic Design from Western Michigan University. After honing her craft in Central Florida for several years, Nagy became a full-time artist in 2018 and is now a fixture of the fine art festival circuit. Nagy’s work has been exhibited throughout Florida and can be found in collections across the United States, Canada, and Europe. Her eye-catching paintings of landscapes, city scenes, and botanicals encourage viewers to be mindful of the beauty surrounding them, even — or especially if — they do not often take the time to notice it. Through her nature-centered art, Nagy aims to stir feelings of hope within the viewer.
Mayfaire festival coordinators Joy Williams and Leslie Norman selected Nagy from over 150 artists participating in the previous year’s competition. “We were drawn to the vivid colors of the cityscapes in other works done by Heather,” Williams explained. “We felt that she would be able to create a beautiful backdrop of Lake Morton, while giving attention to fowl beyond the signature swans on the lake. Heather was a first-year artist last year, and we enjoyed seeing Lakeland through a new artist's eyes.”
Mayfaire by-the-Lake began in 1971 as a craft fair on the Lakeland Library lawn. Since then, it has grown to be one of the largest outdoor art festivals in Central Florida, welcoming over 15,000 visitors and artists from all over the country and becoming the city’s most beloved Mother’s Day weekend tradition.
Event details and visitor information can be found at Mayfairebythelake. org. Co-Title Sponsors for the 52nd Mayfaire by-the-Lake are Citizens Bank & Trust and The Ruthvens. Additional sponsors include Subaru Lakeland, Southern Homes, Publix Super Markets Charities, Friends of Mayfaire, the City of Lakeland, LKLD Arts Mayor’s Council of the Arts, Visit Central Florida, and Culture Builds Florida.

The Forgotten War Remembered: Polk During Korea
The Polk County History Center has unveiled a new exhibit exploring the personal narratives and community institutions that illustrate Polk County’s contributions to the war effort in Korea.
Beginning on June 25, 1950, the Korean War became a global conflict in less than a month. On July 7, 1950, the United Nations Security Council established a command on the peninsula, signifying the world’s first attempt at collective security under the United Nations system. Soldiers, sailors, airmen and medics came from 22 countries hoping to restore peace on the Korean Peninsula. Throughout three years of active battle, many men and women from Polk County answered the call to serve.
Judge Oliver L. Green, Walter Benton and Grady Littles of Polk County were each engaged in the Battle of Chosin. A turning point in the war, the Nov. 25, 1950, battle commenced when the Chinese Volunteer Army crossed the Yalu River into North Korea.
Bartow Air Base was home to Garner Aviation Service Corp., a primary flight training center for the military.

Captain Alice Lorraine Peaslee enlisted in October 1950. Assigned to Flight Nursing Training, Peaslee became a combat flight nurse, caring for the wounded on transport from Korea to Japan.
Back home, Bartow Air Base contracted with the newly formed United States Air Force to conduct primary flight training for air cadets. Operated by civilian contractors, World War II veterans provided primary flight instruction. Between 1951 and 1960, more than 8,000 men graduated from the school, including future NASA astronauts Buzz Aldrin, Ed White and Karol Bobko.
The Korean War exhibit is now open in the Land of Heroes gallery at the Polk County History Center. For more information, visit www.polkhistorycenter.org or call (863) 534-4386. The Polk County History Center is open Tuesday through Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is always free.

Kids Tag Art Award of Distinction Honorees Announced
The number of fantastically artistic ways to personalize your vehicle in Polk County is growing tremendously! More fifth-grade students design specialty license plates each year, as part of the Kids Tag Art (KTA) program founded by Tax Collector Joe G. Tedder.
This program is a fundraiser that supports elementary art teachers by inspiring creativity in students! The young artists craft their unique designs for specialty vanity plates in class as part of the curriculum with real-world application. The plates can be purchased by the public online, at www. KidsTagArt.com.
Tedder encourages the local community to support their neighborhood elementary school by purchasing KTA! All proceeds from the tag sales go back to the classroom for arts education. Now in its eighteenth year, participating counties across Florida have given more than $2 Million back to art teachers through KTA.
"We have such a great team of sponsors and business partners who continue to support arts education in our schools through this creative program because they know it truly brings value to everyone involved!” he adds.
Continuing its support as Major Sponsor is Southern Homes of Polk County. Others include Dprint, Bartow Ford, LEGOLAND Florida Resort, Florida
Department of Citrus, Lauren’s Kids, Florida Heart Research Foundation, Big 4 Radio – 97.5 WPCV and Max 98.3, Bill 2 Pay, MIDFLORIDA Credit Union, LAMAR Advertising Company, First Lakeland Tag Agency, the Polk Education Foundation, South State Bank, Polk Arts & Cultural Alliance, Publix Super Markets Charities, Unlimited DPI, St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital/BayCare Kids, Polk County Public Schools, and the Polk Museum of Art.
In its annual Awards of Distinction (AOD) Ceremony on March 5, the students with top designs were recognized and honored at Branscomb Memorial Auditorium at Florida Southern College in Lakeland.
AOD recognitions honor at least two students from each participating school across Polk County; special award recipients are also honored. This year, the ‘Tax Collector’s Choice Award’ was presented to Sawyer Burns, who attends Babson Park Elementary.
“I love Sawyer’s piece because it reflects something I’m really in love with, which is dogs and beautiful art! Her piece will look absolutely awesome on the front of my vehicle,” Tedder remarked as he installed her tag on his car.
The 2023-2024 Kids Tag Art display will travel the county on exhibit! To learn more, visit www.KidsTagArt.com or contact Public Engagement Specialist Ashleigh Mills, at AshleighMills@polktaxes.com or (863) 534-4738.

Leading From the HeART
An occasional series profiling Polk’s leaders whose commitment and passion for the arts infuses their work and service to the community. This issue’s profile is David Price, President of Bok Tower Gardens and renowned local sculptor. We caught up with him and asked him a few questions.
Describe your personal and professional background:
I was born in Tampa; my father was in the Air Force. In the Franco years, we moved to Madrid, Spain, and lived there until I was almost five. My mother often took me to the Prado to see great art and to the gardens to see beautiful displays of flowers. I wanted to make sculptures and work in a garden someday. To get to where I am now, I started studying at Clemson University to get a BS in Botany. My first paid art job was drawing dissected earthworms to illustrate the Biology 101 lab book. After graduation, I married Catherine Gorman and enlisted in the Peace Corps to serve in Tunisia, North Africa. A year of working in a laboratory convinced me I must do something creative and be out in nature. I wrote letters to gardens throughout the southeast and ended up being hired as the Plantation Manager at Magnolia Plantation in Charleston. Eventually I came to Bok Tower Gardens when I was hired as Director of Horticulture. Catherine and I lived at the El Retiro House, where she worked as the House Mistress. I lived in a mansion, surrounded by gardens and natural lands, with the House Mistress. We ended up having our son, Stefan, while at El Retiro.
What are some of your dreams/visions for Bok Tower Gardens? What do you see are challenges for park?
I respect the mission of the Gardens, which is to be a place of beauty and inspiration where visitors can find peace and enjoy nature. A
focus of mine has been to raise the quality of the gardens and the facilities to keep the place relevant to today's society while maintaining the mission. I see development as a threat to the gardens. We are preserving the sense of place by working with landowners to purchase groves and return them to pinelands. The restored lands are seeing wildlife return. We have released four eagles in the last two months.
What artistic pursuits do you enjoy? Why is making art important to you?
A few years into my work, I was asked by the chairman of the board of Bok Tower Gardens, Guy Botts, about my sculpture. I had put in my resume that I was a sculptor. I told him I had not done any art for a while. He was not amused. For the next 12 months, I threw myself into creating three stone sculptures. Initially, I was carving with a brick chisel and a claw hammer, holding the stone between my feet. After a few months of slow work, I researched stone carving tools and found tools to make my life easier. I worked at a fever pitch, finishing just in time to show at the Lake Wales Art Show. I ended up selling all my work and got a ribbon. The Lake Wales Arts Council purchased one of my sculptures for their permanent collection. Looking for a better business model, I decided to try bronze sculpture. My first bronze sculpture was of a gopher tortoise. With bronze sculpture, multiple casts can be taken from a rubber mold. That gopher tortoise has been my most popular piece and I’ve created over 25 bronze sculptures.
Creating garden spaces that can move emotions is also an art. The most beautiful tree is a longleaf pine snag bleached silver. I have planted several of these dead pines in strategic locations just for the beauty. Bok said that America could be the most beautiful place in the world if it wanted to be. That was why he created the Gardens- to inspire visitors to create beauty in their communities. My work is an artistic pursuit.
How do you think being an artist informs your work as a leader? Why do you believe it's important (or do you?) for leaders to be mindful of the importance of arts and cultural opportunities in their communities?
Creating beauty in our culture has the potential to inspire and live on for many generations. Inspired people can do great things. Inspiring generations has the potential to multiply greatness.
And now for the lightning round:
Who's your favorite artist? What appeals to you about them and their work?
I don't have a favorite artist. I get different inspiration from a host of artists: Van Gogh for his colors and his drive to find peace in his soul; Michelangelo for his love of truth in nature and his dedication to the craft of carving and his art; Henery Moore for finding inspiration in a seashore stone weathered to human form; Frederic Church the romantic symbolism in his landscape paintings.
What current projects are you working on in your own art space?
I am working on a life-size bull gator in an action move, turning in an about-face. I will have him cast in bronze.
What do you think is Bok Tower's "best kept secret?"
We try not to keep secrets at Bok Tower Gardens, but I guess my secret is that I like to wander aimlessly in the gardens to discover the little glimpses of beauty that few see. I am still that little boy who wandered into an abandoned garden to see the red tulips in full bloom.

The Bohrer Gallery LLC
Cultivating Community Passion and Authenticity into the Cultural Arts
Founded in 2017 by Betsy Bohrer and her family, The Bohrer Gallery LLC is a unique, privately owned small business member of the creative arts industry. The Gallery achieves recognition by the cultural arts community for providing scholarships, grants and exhibition opportunities aimed at directly supporting the working artists of Florida.
Its annual signature event, Fine Art at the Magnolia, is a prestigious exhibit held every August at the Magnolia Building in downtown Lakeland, showcasing 19 highly accomplished artists and craftsmen from across the state in various media. The event not only celebrates the rich tapestry of Florida working artists but also serves as a platform for the "Rising Star Scholarship", which aids aspiring young artists like Gabriela Alvarez, a senior at Auburndale High seeking to further her studies in the arts at Polk State College. Fine Art at the Magnolia also contributes to the enrichment of the cultural arts by facilitating community connections with working artists aimed at leading to public art projects. The introduction of sculpture artist Dominice Gilbert to Bob Donahay and Pam Page (City of Lakeland, Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts) at the 2023 art show led to the installation of the fabulous piece at the entrance of Lake Crago Park's Recreation Center in Lakeland.
The Bohrer Gallery extends its impact further through initiatives such as 4 Squared Makerswhich encourages artists of all skill levels to engage and express their creativity and is hosted in partnership with the Mulberry Cultural Center. The One Wall Artist Exhibit and Grant project provides exhibit opportunities for working artists and awards a hardship grant. The 2023 One Wall grant recipient, the Fort Myers Beach Art Association, was award to help rebuild their education facility destroyed by Hurricane Ian. The Florida Arts Journal is an email newsletter produced by the Bohrer Gallery featuring artists from across the state that enriches the authenticity of the working artist narrative.
The Bohrer Gallery is honored to be 100% supported by the community it serves, including patrons, partnerships, artists and endorsements. The Gallery is also proud to have a cosponsorship with the City of Lakeland, Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department along with the endorsement from Dr. Alexander Rich with the Polk Museum of Art. This generous support echos the collective belief in the importance of preserving and promoting the fine arts, and plays a crucial role in aiding in the success and vibrancy of the Bohrer Gallery's events and mission.
At the core of the Bohrer Gallery's vision is Betsy Bohrer's own artistic philosophy. Serving on the board of the Polk Arts and Cultural Alliance, and, as a member of the Lakeland Mayor's Council on the Arts, Betsy puts her entire heart into all she does. With over 30 years as a working artist, her mixed-media paintings reflect the values of family, community, and spiritual health. Betsy's dedication to building and healing through art exemplifies the gallery's overall mission to create a supportive and passionate artistic community.
"The Bohrer Gallery is more than just an art agency; it is a testament to the power of community involvement, creative authenticity and collaboration. The Bohrer family remains dedicated to contributing to the success of the working artist and cultural enrichment of Lakeland and beyond by fostering environments where artists can thrive and the public can engage in art in meaningful ways," Bohrer says.

Through June 15 at Emporium Lakeland
Emporium Galleries hosts solo shows for local artists throughout the year. Explore the Works of Natasha Rivera in her debut solo show "Who Am I?" through June 15 at Emporium Lakeland.
From the Artist's Statement: "My debut solo show, 'Who Am I?,' gives me the opportunity to showcase a body of work that delves deeply into the intersection of nostalgia and introspection. Using a diverse range of mediums including inkjet prints, silver gelatin prints, block prints, and graphite or ink drawings on paper to invite viewers on a journey of self-discovery. Each artwork serves as a portal into our past, prompting viewers to revisit their own nostalgic moments and embark on a journey of self-exploration.
Themes of identity weave throughout the collection, blurring the lines between the familiar and the arcane. Whether through whimsical compositions or somber imagery, this collection seeks to unravel the layers of personal narrative and cultural influence that shape our sense of self.
Inspired by my experiences navigating pop culture of the 21st century, memories of roller skating, comfort food, and the intricate depths of the human psyche aim to provoke introspection and reflection.
Ultimately, “Who Am I?” is an invitation to delve into the enigma that is the human experience, offering viewers the opportunity to unravel their own identities."

Leonardo's Lab Coming to Florida Children's Museum
This traveling exhibit explores the ideas, talents, and inventions of Leonardo DaVinci from May 12 - September 20
Starting May 12 and running through September 20, Florida Children’s Museum is excited to host Leonardo’s Lab, organized by Carnegie Science Center (Pittsburgh) and presented by Sciencenter (Ithaca). The traveling exhibit invites children to immerse themselves in Leonardo da Vinci’s mind-- building, sketching, testing, and designing just like the “Renaissance Man” himself. Hands-on opportunities span topics in both science and art, including…
Entry Piece - Both entry sign and double-sided fun photo-op, these pieces allow guests to have a photo taken (by family member or friend) of their face as the Mona Lisa or Leonardo himself!
Gears ‘n Pegs - Mix and match three ratio-coordinated gears to create your own 2D and 3D interlocking mechanisms.
Bridging the Gap - Recreate Leonardo’s amazing tool-and-hardware-free interlocking bridge.
Take Flight - Using a preprinted template, cut out and fold your own air-powered flying ‘copter, then modify to change or improve the aerodynamics.
Mona Lisa X4 - Four different art activities – Draw, Color, Stamp, Rub result in your very own Mona Lisa masterpiece!
Mirror Writing - Leonardo used his own reverse-print code to keep his ideas confidential. Try your hand– literally – at writing backwards so it seems correct when viewed in a mirror.
Visit FCM’S Black Box Theatre to explore Leonardo’s ideas and inventions. This exhibit is included in Museum admission and membership. To plan your visit, head to www.ExploreFCM.org.

Bartow Art Guild's Upcoming Solo Shows
Born in Orlando, Florida, Rob Smith, Jr began drawing at a young age. His fourth grade art teacher noticed his work and through her, other teachers and his family’s motivation, he is still drawing today. Rob began drawing professionally at the age of 16, drawing caricatures at local attractions and creating various advertising art. After high school, Rob attended Ringling School of Art, the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art, Rollins College, and Valencia Community College. He worked for the City of Orlando from 1985 to 2006 in the Planning and Engineering departments. In 1992, he began creating award winning editorial cartoons for the Winter Park Observer. He continued to create art for commercial projects. His editorial cartoon production expanded to the Lakeland Ledger and was syndicated around the country for a nationally known radio/television personality.
Through guidance from Chris Browne, cartoonist of ‘Hagar the Horrible’, Rob created ‘Swampy’s Florida’. The original idea was to present a comic strip for syndication. While syndicates were considering the strip, colleagues warned Rob that his actual intent, to use Swampy’s Florida to educate of Florida’s incredible history, heritage and culture, could never happen if syndicated. Rob pulled the strip and started work to reach his first goal. The first Swampy’s Florida history & travel book, ‘Lakeland’, appeared in 2010. Over the years there have been 19 books, cards and other items produced. The demise of book stores has had Rob redirect production through online services. That is an ongoing effort. Examples of some of what is being done can be found in this exhibit.
Rob is a Florida historian and tourism and travel expert who regularly speaks at special events and gatherings. Rob is, and has been for nearly 40 years, heavily active in Florida historical, home school, political, and environmental groups.
“Florida Through the Whimsical Art of Rob Smith, Jr.” will be featured May 4-25 with the chance to meet Rob at the opening reception on Monday, May 13 from 6-8:30pm.
James “Lone Star” Camp has been painting signage, baptismals and storefronts in Polk, Highlands, Hardee and Hillsborough County for decades. Thanks to a longtime friend, Perry Northup, another art project took him to Sumter County.
Born in Bartow, Lone Star was the youngest (and now the only living) of 9 siblings. At age 14, he left home to travel with carnivals throughout Canada and the US. As his name might suggest, “Lone Star” is well known for his western wear and cowboy hats. In times past, he even wore a holster with a real six-shooter! Although he dabbles with other subjects, his heart is in creating art with western themes. A chat with him will surely lead to colorful stories of his over eight decades of adventures and his longing for simpler times of old cowboy heroes and simple living. If a piano is nearby, or he happens to have his harmonica handy, you may even be treated to a concert.
In the day of vinyl signage, it is rare to see a self-taught artist mixing paint and free-hand painting. If you are traveling Highway 17 from Winter Haven to Arcadia, you'll fine Lone Star's art work on the fronts of Treasure Marts, Main Street Tailors, and Bartow Appliance in Bartow; and Downtown and Courtney's One Stop in Fort Meade, among others. His smaller canvas works, as well as custom fence murals, can be found throughout the area in private collections like Bartow’s Christian Bookstore.
“Our Folk – The Folk Art of James ‘Lone Star´ Camp” will be featured June 1-29 with the chance to meet this local legend at the opening reception, sponsored by Bartow Juneteenth Empowerment Organization, Inc., on Monday, June 10 from 6-8:30pm.
The Art Gallery, at 1242 East Main Street in Bartow, is open on Saturdays from 10am to 4pm, and the second Monday of each month from 6-8:30pm to open new exhibits. Learn more by visiting www.bartowartguild.com.
