Глава 1 Биология шиншилл Основная информация Шинши́ллы — род грызунов семейства шиншилловых. Естественный ареал — пустынное высокогорье Анд в Чили, Перу, Боливии и Аргентине. Шиншиллы являлись объектом интенсивной охоты из-за ценного меха, что привело к сильному уменьшению их численности и занесению в Красную книгу Международного союза охраны природы и природных ресурсов. Длиннохвостые шиншиллы разводятся на мех на фермах во многих странах. Почти все дикие шиншиллы исчезли. Однако редкие свидетельства, дают представление об их описании и поведении. Домашние шиншиллы унаследовали характеристики от своих предков. Эти грызуны размером с маленького кролика прекрасно приспособились к своему образу жизни во враждебной среде обитания. Chinchillas are a genus of rodents of the chinchilla family. Natural area — desert highlands of the Andes in Chile, Peru, Bolivia and Argentina. Chinchillas were the object of intensive hunting due to their valuable fur, which led to a strong decrease in their number and entry into the Red Book of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources. Long-tailed chinchillas are bred for fur on farms in many countries.

Almost all wild chinchillas have disappeared. However, rare evidence gives an idea of ​​their description and behavior. Domestic chinchillas have inherited characteristics from their ancestors.

These rodents, the size of a small rabbit, have perfectly adapted to their lifestyle in a hostile habitat.

To understand certain features of each domesticated animal, you need to know their habitat. The homeland of chinchillas is South America (pic. 1). Short-tailed chinchillas live in the Andes of southern Bolivia, northwestern Argentina and northern Chile. The long-tailed chinchilla is today found only in a limited area of ​​the Andes in northern Chile.

Chinchillas inhabit dry rocky areas at an altitude of 400 to 5000 meters above sea level, preferring the northern slopes. Rocks and voids under stones are used as shelters; if they are absent, the animals dig a hole. Chinchillas are perfectly adapted to life in the mountains. Chinchillas are monogamous. According to some reports, life expectancy can reach 20 years. Chinchillas lead a colonial lifestyle; their food is various herbaceous plants, mainly cereals, legumes, as well as mosses, lichens, cacti, shrubs, tree bark, and insects from animal food.

Chinchillas live in colonies and are active at night. Their skeleton contracts in a vertical plane, allowing animals to crawl through narrow vertical cracks. A well-developed cerebellum allows the animals to move well along the rocks. Big black eyes, long whiskers, large oval ears are not an accident: this is an adaptation to a twilight lifestyle.

The exploitation of animals as a source of valuable fur on the European and North American markets began in the 19th century, and there is a great demand for skins to this day. One fur coat requires about 100 skins, chinchilla products are recognized as the rarest and most expensive. In 1928, a chinchilla coat was worth half a million gold marks. In 1992, a chinchilla fur coat cost $ 22,000.

Особенности животных Для зверьков характерны сильно развитые «усы» — вибриссы. Достигая в длину 8 –10 см, они торчат в разные стороны; с их помощью грызуны, ведущие преимущественно ночной образ жизни, ищут корм, ориентируются при переходах по тесным скальным трещинам. Тип зрения у шиншилл — ночной, но они прекрасно видят и днем. Помимо этих способов ориентирования — зрения и осязания — на высокую приспособленность зверьков к жизни в горах указывают и другие особенности анатомии, физиологии и поведения шиншилл. Например, при необходимости скелет (рис. 2, 3) шиншилл сжимается не в горизонтальном направлении (сверху вниз), как у большинства млекопитающих, а в вертикальном — с боков, что помогает им пролезать сквозь узкие вертикальные трещины, характерные для скальных участков гор. Значительно развитый мозжечок (отдел головного мозга, координирующий движение и равновесие) позволяет зверькам успешно передвигаться по скалам и осыпям. Мех шиншилл также можно отнести к числу приспособлений к жизни в горных условиях. Для высокогорья характерны резкие колебания температуры и влажности, порой довольно значительные. Без теплой шкурки шиншиллам трудно было бы поддерживать достаточно высокую температуру тела. У шиншиллы нет ярко выраженной по временам года линьки. Тело шиншиллы покрыто ровным, шелковистым мехом длиной 2,5 – 3 см, со слабо выраженным ворсом, образующим красивую темную вуаль. Цвет меха на спине и боках — от светло-серого до темно-серого с голубоватым оттенком, на брюшке — белый или голубовато-белый. Пуховые волосы слегка волнистые, толщиной 12 – 16 мкм и длиной 2,5 – 3 см; кроющие волосы вдвое толще и лишь на 4 – 8 мм длиннее подпуши. На 1 см2 поверхности кожи насчитывается более 25 тысяч волос, что значительно больше, чем у других пушных зверей. Шиншилла имеет уникальное строение меха. Если у всех пушных зверей из одной волосяной луковицы вырастает один волосок, то у шиншиллы — 60 или 80. Особенностью шиншиллы является способность «отпускать» мех (аутомия). Если зверька

Аутомия или же аутотомия — способность животного во время стресса, чаще всего во время побега или отпугивния хищника, сбрасывать часть своего тела. Дикобразы, обладают такой же способностью: в надежде отпугнуть опасность, они «стреляют» своими шипами в противника.

Automy or autotomy is the ability of an animal during stress, most often during escape or scaring away a predator, to discard any part of the body.

The closest relatives of chinchillas, porcupines, have the same ability: hoping to scare off danger, they “shoot” their thorns at the enemy.

This animals chinchillas are characterized by highly developed “whiskers” — vibrissae. Reaching a length of 8 –10 cm, they stick out in different directions; with their help, rodents, predominantly nocturnal, search for food, navigate along tight rocky crevices. Chinchillas have night vision, but they see perfectly well during day.

In addition to these methods of orientation — sight and touch — other features of the anatomy, physiology and behavior of chinchillas also point to the high adaptability of animals to life in the mountains. For example, if necessary, the skeleton (pic. 2, 3) of chinchillas is compressed not horizontally (from top to bottom), as in most mammals, but vertically — from the sides, which helps them to crawl through narrow vertical cracks characteristic of rocky areas of mountains. Significantly developed cerebellum (the part of the brain that coordinates movement and balance) allows the animals to successfully move along rocks and talus.

Chinchilla fur can also be classified as an adaptation to life in the mountains. Highlands are characterized by sharp fluctuations in temperature and humidity, sometimes quite significant. Without warm skin, it would be difficult for chinchillas to maintain a sufficiently high body temperature. The chinchilla does not have a pronounced molt in the seasons.

The body of a chinchilla is covered with smooth, silky fur 2.5 – 3 cm long, with a weakly pronounced pile, forming a beautiful dark veil. The color of the fur on the back and sides is from light gray to dark gray with a bluish tint, on the belly it is white or bluish-white. Downy hair is slightly wavy, 12 –16 microns thick and 2.5 – 3 cm long; covering hair is twice as thick and only 4 – 8 mm longer than the underfur. There are more than 25 thousand hairs per 1 cm 2 of skin surface, which is much more than that of other fur-bearing animals. Chinchilla has a unique fur structure. If in all fur-bearing animals one hair grows from one hair follicle, then in a chinchilla — 60 or 80.

A feature of the chinchilla is the ability to “let go” of the fur (automy). If the animal is abruptly grabbed by the body, then the hair in this area is separated from the skin. Obviously, this is one of the ways to protect yourself from predators.

The hair of chinchillas has a zonal color: the lower half is dark gray, sometimes almost black or bluish, the middle one is white, the upper half is black, which gives the fur a beautiful play of tones on the curves of the body. Male and female do not differ in fur color.

При хороших условиях кормления половая зрелость у самок наступает в трехмесячном возрасте, у самцов — в четырехмесячном. Спаривать же их следует не ранее чем в 6–7 месяцев. Беременность продолжается около 110 дней (105 –115 дней). В среднем приплод шиншиллы — 2 детеныша, в год она способна дать 2 – 3 приплода. Молодняк при рождении хорошо развит, опушен, у малышей уже есть резцы и по три (с каждой стороны) коренных зуба. Четвертые коренные зубы прорезаются на тридцатый день. С первых же дней жизни малыши ведут себя активно, а на седьмой день начинают поедать корм. Новорожденные щенки весят 40 –50 г. К трем месяцам они достигают веса 275–290 грамм. В дальнейшем рост несколько замедляется, и в 9 месяцев зверьки весят 450 г. Живут шиншиллы до 16 –18 лет, но срок их использования в разведении ограничивается десятью годами. Максимальная продуктивность отмечается в пятилетнем возрасте. Благодаря высокоорганизованной нервной системе и наличию волосяного покрова шиншиллы хорошо приспосабливаются к различным условиям и живут в самых различных природных зонах планеты. Однако каждый вид млекопитающих имеет свой ареал (область распространения) и может жить только в тех условиях, к которым приспособился. Поэтому в городской квартире или в загородном доме по возможности создайте для шиншиллы такие условия, в которых живет этот зверек в природе.

Щенками офиициально называется приплод самки шиншиллы. Такое название, вероятно, происходит из-за невозможноости дать детенышам этого зверя более гармнонично звучащее название.

This name, probably, comes from the impossibility of giving the cubs of this animal a more harmonious sounding name.

Chinchillas groom their fur by bathing in fine, dry dust. In this connection, in the process of evolution, they acquired an unusual adaptation characteristic of marine animals — special outgrowths-membranes in the auricles, which close the auditory canal at the right time.

Under good feeding conditions, sexual maturity in females occurs at three months of age, in males at four months of age. They should be mated no earlier than 6 – 7 months. Chinchillas live up to 16 –18 years, but the period of their use in breeding is limited to ten years. Maximum productivity is noted at the age of five.

Лучший корм — витаминное сено, скошенное до цветения трав и правильно высушенное, проращенные злаки, морковно-сухарная смесь. Приближение родов можно определить по внешним признакам самки. У нее набухает влагалище, оно увеличивается и удлиняется. Связки таза расслабляются, более отчетливо выступает крестцовая кость, живот опускается, бока впадают и становятся виднее ребра. Незадолго до родов у самки шиншилл набухают соски. Она беспокоится, издает характерные звуки, поскольку приближаются схватки. Из влагалища вытекает слизь. После этого наступают роды, во время которых в родовых путях сначала появляются околоплодные оболочки, и через прозрачную пленку видны ножки детеныша. В результате активных сокращений мускулатуры матки и мышц живота происходит выведение плода, длящееся несколько минут. Появление новорожденных важно обнаружить как можно раньше, чтобы при необходимости оказать самке экстренную помощь. Обычно роды у шиншиллы проходят утром, чаще всего с 5 до 8 часов. Непосредственному появлению детенышей предшествует выделение у самки мутной жидкости. Иногда роды могут затягиваться до нескольких часов, в зависимости от количества детенышей, а также возраста и состояния матери. Самка чаще всего приносит детенышей без посторонней помощи, быстро восстанавливает силы, съедает послед и начинает кормить малышей молоком. Однако появление детенышей может затянуться по тем или иным причинам. В таком случае надо вызвать ветеринарного врача. Чтобы предотвратить трудные роды, необходима поддержка самки сахаром и глюкозой за несколько дней до родов. Это безвредные и действенные вещества.

During this period, the development of the fetus takes place from the beginning of fertilization of the female to childbirth. A chinchilla’s pregnancy lasts about 110 days (pic. 4). Sometimes pregnancy can be prolonged or accelerated within five days. During this period, the female’s diet should be carefully balanced in protein, vitamins and minerals. During pregnancy, the amount of roughage is reduced to females by 25% and, accordingly, the proportion of grain mixture, fresh herbs and animal feed (milk, cottage cheese, chicken eggs) is increased. The food of the expectant mother should be as diverse as possible, rich in vitamins and proteins. Additional food is primarily milk, juicy feed, products containing the most valuable vitamins and proteins. The best food is vitamin hay, mown before the flowering of grasses and properly dried, germinated cereals, carrot-rusk mixture.

The approach of labor can be determined by the appearance of the female. Her vagina swells, it enlarges and lengthens. The pelvic ligaments relax, the sacrum bone protrudes more clearly, the abdomen sinks, the sides fall in and the ribs become more visible. Shortly before giving birth, a female chinchilla’s nipples swell. She worries, makes characteristic sounds as contractions approach. Mucus flows out of the vagina. After this, childbirth begins, during which the amniotic membranes first appear in the birth canal, and the legs of the baby are visible through the transparent film. As a result of active contractions of the muscles of the uterus and abdominal muscles, the fetus is excreted, which lasts several minutes.

It is important to detect the appearance of newborns as early as possible in order to provide emergency assistance to the female if necessary. Usually, a chinchilla gives birth in the morning, most often from 5 to 8 hours. The immediate appearance of pups is preceded by the release of a cloudy liquid in the female. Sometimes childbirth can take up to several hours, depending on the number of cubs and the age and condition of the mother. The female most often brings cubs without assistance, quickly recovers strength, eats the afterbirth and begins to feed the babies with milk. However, the appearance of cubs can be delayed for one reason or another. In this case, you should call your veterinarian. If good care and proper feeding of chinchillas were provided constantly, and not only during the breeding season, then this will not slow down to affect the main thing — the number and quality of offspring. To prevent difficult labor, the female needs sugar and glucose support a few days before birth. These are effective, quickly absorbed and practically harmless substances. In addition, sugar, which should be preferred in this case, has another

К тому же сахар, которому в этом случае нужно отдать предпочтение, обладает еще одним полезным свойством: он стимулирует активность мышечной системы матки. С целью профилактики сахар лучше скармливать в водном растворе не реже трех-четырех раз в сутки. Густой сироп дают по 2–3 г, но можно давать и сахарный песок — по 1,5 – 2 г. Благополучный исход беременности зависит у шиншиллы не от последнего момента родов, а от хорошего содержания в течение всей жизни и полноценного кормления. Если были обеспечены хороший уход и полноценное кормление шиншилл постоянно, а не только в период размножения, то это не замедлит сказаться и на главном — количестве и качестве потомства.

Количество детенышей в зависимости от возраста и здоровья самки варьируется от 1 до 6 щенков в приплоде

Период молочного кормления Детеныши (рис. 5) находятся в гнезде, обогреваются матерью и кормятся ее молоком. Продолжительность лактационного периода — 45–60 дней. В это время в рацион самки необходимо ввести достаточное количество кормов, содержащих белки, и сочных кормов с повышенным содержанием витаминов и минеральных веществ, особенно кальция и фосфора. Самку желательно также подкармливать коровьим молоком из отдельной кормушки. Коровье молоко способствует увеличению молочности самок.

Период полового созревания Молодняк переходит на самостоятельное кормление, и его можно отделять от самки. Малыши очень подвижны, учитывайте это, когда покупете им клетку. В конце этого периода у молодых зверьков появляются вторичные половые признаки. Молочные зубы сменяются постоянными. Происходит интенсивный рост зверьков, сменяется меховой покров. Не допускайте в этот период сквозняков: щенки еще не имеют такого крепкого иммунитета, как их сородичи, и могут заболеть. Самый критический момент у молодняка наступает после отсадки от матери. В это время детеныши испытывают стресс, поэтому чем позже вы отсадите их от матери, тем меньший стресс они испытают при разлуке. Будьте осторожны в этот период: стресс плохо сказывается на общем состоянии животного. Есть вероятность ухудшения вида шерсти, возникновения нервных растройств, появление проблем с желудочно-кишечным трактом и сердечно-сосудистой системой. Если были обеспечены хороший уход и полноценное кормление шиншилл постоянно. В первый период после отсадки детенышам давайте более мягкие, легкопереваримые дробленые корма. Очень полезны свежая зелень, хорошее сено и подкормка коровьим или козьим молоком.

The skin that covers the body of a chinchilla is a perfect organ and has many physiological functions. From an anatomical point of view, the skin consists of three layers: the epidermis, the skin itself and the subcutaneous layer (pic. 6).

The epidermis is the outer, superficial layer that makes up about 1–2% of the skin’s thickness. The denser the hairline of the animal, the thinner and simpler it is. In its deepest layer, called the base, cells divide intensively, which then move outward. On top of the base lies another layer, consisting of identical polygonal cells.

These two layers are like a living part of the epidermis. In the deeper layers, there are cells containing grains of pigment that give color to the skin and hairs.

In the cross section of the hair, three zones are clearly visible: the sheath, the cortex, and the shaft (core). The shell is a very thin layer of keratinized scales that cover the hair like a shingle. The bark is significantly thicker and plays a major role in the mechanical endurance of the hair. The thicker it is, the more durable the fur products are.

The hair core occupies the middle part and is surrounded by bark. It consists of small keratinized cells of various shapes, depending on the thickness and type of hair. Down hairs have either no core at all, or it consists of one row of cells. In guard and leading hair, the core consists of several rows of such cells, and it is thickest at the widest point of the hair. The structure of the core determines, among other things, the endurance of the hair and its heat-protective properties.

The hair coat is characterized by many features, which together determine its appearance, and therefore, the value of the fur. Among these, the most important are the density, height and evenness of the cover, the composition, elasticity and fluffiness of the hairs, the softness and color of the cover, as well as gloss.

The thickness of the hairline is not permanent; it changes with the age of the animal, depending on the season and a specific part of the body. The cover is full-quality, the thickest, in adult chinchillas it happens in winter, and in the younger generation it grows by 8-10 months. In view of this structure of wool, chinchillas definitely need sand baths. The hair of chinchillas is one of the thickest in the world: up to 30,000 hairs grow (on the back) per 1 cm2. On the sides and abdomen, the density is slightly less. This property is assessed very objectively - by the size of a piece of skin that becomes visible if you blow on the fur. If the skin is not visible, or if only a dot is visible, the skin is considered to have good density. With a thin cover, a fairly large area of ​​the skin is visible.

The density of the chinchilla’s fur is associated with the specific structure of the hairs and their germination from the skin. They are very thin and delicate; they grow in groups of three bundles, each of which consists of 20 – 60 downy hairs surrounding one guard hair, which serves as an elastic and elastic support for them.

The next characteristic of the hairline is its height, that is, the length of the hairs. Although chinchillas are considered shorthaired animals, measurements show that the length of the downy hair reaches 21 – 28 mm, and the guard and leading hairs protrude above them by at least 3 mm. The longest hairs grow on the back; they are somewhat shorter on the sides and abdomen. The difference in the length of fur hairs (down and protruding above it) is an extremely important indicator of fur, which largely determines the price of the skin. The lower part of the hair body (about 3/4 of its height), as well as the very top (1–2 mm), are colored more intensely, and between them there is a zone 3–5 mm wide with a lighter color. This stripe is narrowest on the hairs growing on the back and widest on the sides of the body. The darkly colored tips of the hairs create a veil that should be evenly spread over the back and sides of the pelt.

A black shiny veil extends over the sides, and the more uniform and contrasting it is in relation to the belly, the more spectacular the fur looks.

In chinchillas of the “standard” type, the color should be steel, with a blue tint, dark or very dark. The veil should be uniform and evenly spread over the entire skin, noticeably thicker along the back. In black axamite chinchillas, the main color is black, without tints, and in beige chinchillas it is cream or cream-beige. The belly of most breeds should be snowy white.

The next indicator is the shine of the hairline. Caused by the reflection of light rays from the surface of the hairs, it is stronger, the smoother the surface of the fur. The intensity of shine is influenced by the size, shape and location of the shell scales, the thickness of the hair, the degree of its coverage with fat and the composition of the coat.
