elcome to the last edition of the QPSA magazine for 2018. This year has again seen many of our members participating in their sports of choice throughout Queensland as well as travelling to other states to participate in their annual National Championships. On behalf of the QPSA committee I would like to congratulate you on your participation and efforts which ultimately leads to not only improving your overall health, fitness and wellbeing but can also assist in dealing with other life stressors and mental health issues that we deal with in our everyday lives!! In October we had approximately 80 Qld police officers and 30-40 other Qld Emergency Services staff travel to the 2018 Australasian Police and Emergency Services Games (AP&ES) which was held in Mandurah, WA. A fantastic week was had by all who attended and we came away with some great results and medals with a few sore and sorry bodies by the end of the week. Queensland night was held on the Tuesday night at the Oceanic Bar where there was a good turn out and some stories shared amongst those who attended. “Bite the Box” was again hosted by the hockey team which drew in competitors from NZ who were also present at the Oceanic Bar but unfortunately there was no clear winner so we will have to wait until 2020 AP&ES Games to crown a winner. I would personally like to thank our Qld Games Managers, S/Sgt Gary Tobin and Sgt Trevor Wendt for all their hard work and support of our members whilst in WA which at times had them transporting our players to medical centres for assessment and treatment. Thank you from ALL the Qld team!! The next AP&ES Games is to be held from 17th – 24th October 2020 in Wollongong, NSW so start organising your fellow team mates and get your teams ready as it will be here before you know it and NSW are sure to put on a great games. This brings me to announce that the Queensland Police Games incorporating Emergency Services is going to be held in October 2019 (date yet to be announced) so start getting your teams ready for this event. Stay tuned for further details to be announced in the near future!!

In closing I would also like to thank the QPSA Committee – Vice President, S/Sgt Gary Tobin, Secretary, S/Sgt Jo Stone, Treasurer, Sgt Trevor Wendt and Committee members, Sgt Belinda Patrick , S/ Con Susan Alderdice and Paull Houston (Tailor) for all their help, assistance and guidance throughout 2018 and I look forward to making 2019 even bigger and better for the QPSA and its members. MANAGERS REPORT From Gary Tobin & Trevor Wendt

he Australian Police and Emergency Service Games was held at Mandurah, Western Australia from the 28 October to the 4 November 2018. Mandurah is a small picturesque coastal town approximately. 75km south of Perth. There were over 3500 athletes competing in various sports during the games. Queensland had an a contingent of around 80 competitors that travelled for the games and competed in sports such as Aquathon, Touch Football, Soccer (Field), Soccer (Futsal), Hockey, Pistol Shooting, Squash, Golf, Tennis, Swimming, Athletics (Track and Field and Road), Lawn Bowls, Indoor Rowing, Open Water, and Indoor rowing. The Opening Ceremony was run along the foreshores of Mandurah with an excellent representation of Queensland members marching at the front of the Parade. As usual, all sports were very competitive but were played or competed in the right spirit. The Queensland members were able to achieve medals (a full tally will be provided in a later edition) in most of the sports, including our own Commissioner, who teamed with Matthew Tonkin from Bundaberg Crime Unit, to win Gold in the ‘Commissioners Bowls’ championships.

There were some outstanding personal individual performances that will be highlighted in other articles throughout this magazine. Trevor Wendt and I tried to attend all the sports at some stage throughout the week, except for a few sports, which unfortunately was due to the location for those events, but we were able to catch up with the members involved, who gave us a daily update of their performances. We were able to take numerous photos and have also been fortunate to receive further photos taken by members at from their events. Other than the usual soreness and fatigue from the daytime sports (and night time activities), most of the Queensland contingent fared pretty well, other than a few trips I personally made to Medical Centres or the Hospital, ferrying injured members for treatment, fortunately all were not serious, with the worst injury being a head injury from a stray hockey stick during one of the women’s games which required further treatment.

MANAGERS REPORT From Gary Tobin & Trevor Wendt

he Queensland night was held at the Oceanic Bar and Grill and from all the feedback everyone appeared to enjoy themselves, including our Commissioner, who attended with his Gold Medal proudly worn on display. Trevor and I would like to thank the Commissioner for finding time in his busy schedule, to not only attend the night, but also for mingling and chatting to everyone that was there. Of course, it would not be Queensland night without our traditional ‘bite the box competition’ with our two reigning champions from the previous games (Joanna Stone and Dominic Varfis) not in attendance. There were many first-time challenges that fell by the way side early in the competition and keeping with the theme of diversity and partnerships we even had several of the other states or agencies join in to take up the challenge. Unfortunately, there were a number of pretenders for the title, being unable to reach the lofty heights of our previous champions, with no winners declared on the night. All in in all though a fun night was had by all.

The next games will be held in Wollongong, NSW, in 2020 and we hope to see more Queenslanders attending and competing at those games and bringing back more medals from Mexico. We would like to thank our sponsors Queensland Police Union, Queensland Police Sporting Association, Queensland Police Service and World of Sport for all their support and look forward to continued partnerships for future events. Also, to our President, Scott Adams, who volunteered his time from organising and playing Hockey, to assist in transporting members to and from events. Having travelled all over the world Bindjareb Middar dance troupe have worked with Dr Richard Walley, Ernie Dingo and Shane Pickett just to name a few, they present the best experiences Indigenous Culture has to offer. After Theo’s father passed away he took over the dance group and continued to share the knowledge and culture with the world. Having acted in Paperback hero and many 5 minute films on the ABC and NITV, Theo was lucky enough to meet many famous people through his culture and dancing, such as Michael Jackson, Geoffrey Rush, Arthur Hurts, Claudio Carven, Dennis Rodman and Wesley Snipes. Theo has also had the amazing opportunity to travel to Africa and live with the Masai warriors for two weeks and share one another’s cultures, including also the American Indians in the remote communities.

2018 OPENING NOTES Mandurah Welcomes Participants and Guests

he City of Mandurah could have been the safest in Australia for the last week of October and first week of November as it played host to the 2018 APES Games. More than 3,000 serving and retired personnel and registered volunteers from police and emergency service agencies competed in Mandurah for the 17th Games, running from 28 October to 3 November. The Games officially commenced the Sunday night with a major Opening Ceremony on Mandurah’s eastern foreshore from 6pm. Members of the public were invited to attend, which included a torch relay, a parade of competitors, official welcomes, live music and fireworks. A cycling criterium was also staged through the afternoon along Mandurah Terrace, allowing crowds to watch competition before the Opening Ceremony. “The Games provide a unique opportunity for members of the community to show their appreciation for the fine work carried out every day by our emergency responders right across Australasia,” said Deputy Commissioner (Specialist Services) Stephen Brown. “The public events like the Opening Ceremony in particular will allow people to display their support first hand, while also enjoying some wonderful entertainment and the beautiful facilities Mandurah affords.” Joining the strong contingents from interstate was more than 200 international competitors from New Zealand, China, Singapore, Hong Kong and New Caledonia. An additional 7,000 supporters, officials and volunteers also attended. More than 50 sporting events were staged across the Games, organised by the Western Australia Police Sports Federation. Traditional team and individual sports were supplemented by specialist events that showcased specific work skills, such as shooting, fire truck pull and surf lifesaving. “We promote this event as Extraordinary Games for Extraordinary People,” said DC Brown. “For the competitors, it’s a chance to socialise outside of the stresses of their working lives in a positive environment that fosters physical and mental benefits. This is all about collaboration, competition and comradery.” On the business side, the Games were projected to inject $2.5 million into the WA economy. The majority of the services associated with managing this event are sourced locally, providing opportunities for many small, medium and large businesses within the Mandurah region. The first Games were held in 1984 and are now conducted every two years as the Australasian Police & Emergency Services Games in a different State/Territory of Australia or New Zealand.

AQUATHON 2018 Aquathon WA Police Games

he Aquathon is a combination of swimming and running. At Mandurah 2018 the swim leg consisted of swimming through the local canals through a zig zag course for 500m and then finishing on the beach (Lido) and running up to the transition area, changing into running gear and then running 5km on a out and back course along a footpath. Senior Constable Donna Gilliland from Hervey Bay Police competed in this event and acquitted herself very well. She ended up with a silver medal in her age group. The run leg became quite difficult as the wind started to pick up on the home leg. A great effort to finish.

LAWN BOWLS Commissioners challenge for the lawn Bowls.

HOCKEY 2018 Hockey WA Police Games Written by Katrusha Zalucki

his years AP&ES games saw numerous Queensland Police Service (QPS), Queensland Fire Service (QFRS) and Queensland Ambulance (QAS) officers come together from around the state to form three teams to compete in hockey. As always, the onfield determination was there and with minimal preparation time (one day of training before the competition began) a formidable Queensland Police women’s team looked to defend its previous two gold medals. Unfortunately, due to distance only a few Qld Men could make the journey but they joined the WA Fire Team (Hot Sticks) and were integral players within the team. The players also combined to form a mixed team meaning most players played up to 3 games of hockey a day. The Queensland Police Women’s Team comprised of Captain, Annette Wilson (Brisbane Region), Manager, Katrusha Zalucki (Logan), Susan Rogers (Mackay), Karen Kidner (former QPS, Mackay) Mia Miskiewicz (PSBA), Leslie Anderson (North Brisbane), Janelle Poole (Townsville) Carolyn “Charlie” Margetts (NSW Ambulance), Aeron Holzhauser (QFRS, Cairns), Kate Van Der Meer (NZ), Georgina Webb, Kacci Sten and Michele Hughes (WA Police). The girls played hard in the pool games and progressing to the final against WA Police. A tough final was fought by both teams and midway through the first half Katrusha and Karen (returning from a head injury from the previous game) linked to score the only goal of the game and winning the gold medal 1-0. The team affectionately known at the games as the Golden Moles took the gold again are now three time champions, with four members involved in all wins Annette, Charlie, Janelle and Katrusha. Unfortunately the mixed team was unable to progress out of the pool games (despite solid defence from Jeff Platz and attacking runs by Scott “Barney”Adams) The Hot Sticks assisted with our Queensland Men were the team to watch in the men’s competition. Not losing any games, the Hot Sticks took on Victoria Police in the final and came away with the gold.

Jade Taylor (Thursday Island), Drew Harold (Maryborough) and Jeff Monro (QAS) combined with the WA Firies to produce some amazing hockey. All competitors are looking forward to travelling to Wollongong (The Gong) in 2020 to continue the gold medal dominance in hockey by Queensland. Go QPOL!

Not to leave it all hard work and no play, the teams wound down with Halloween festivities, getting out with fellow players.

TOUCH FOOTBALL 2018 Touch Football WA Police Games

he touch football was held over two days in Mandurah. The team was a mix of Qld Police and New South Wales Firies. The same team minus a couple played together in the 2016 Police Games on the Sunshine Coast. It was great couple of days for our touch players, playing 8 games over the 2 days of competition. They were a bit sore but played some magnificent touch against way less younger opponents. The youngest member of this team was 44yrs. The team finished equal second overall after the preliminary games and played well in the semi- final but unfortunately lost that game 4-2. This meant the team won the bronze medal. They are hoping all players will be healthy and fit to go again at Wollongong 2020. Rebecca Dale was awarded the â&#x20AC;&#x153;John Weier Trophyâ&#x20AC;? for her performances on and off the field, her mateship, her leadership and her organisational ability by having this team turn up at the right place at the right time. The Qld Police Pistol Club fielded a full team of four to contest the events, and they were supported by an individual competitor from North Arm Pistol Club on the Sunshine Coast.

he first event was conducted at the Port Bouvard Pistol Club, just south of Mandurah, in the coastal hamlet of Dawesville. The range itself was very well presented and served the 34 competitors needs admirably. The match was conducted in squads of four competitors at a time, commencing at 9:30am and

concluding at 1:30pm following a short break for lunch. The various Law Enforcement Agencies from across the country were well represented as well as two competitors from Singapore. The competition itself was broken up into three divisions made up of ‘Open’, ‘Law Enforcement’ and ‘Teams’, the LE division was well

he second Pistol Shooting event was conducted an hour northeast of Perth at the Pine Valley Pistol Club, as part of the larger recreational reserve that is Whiteman Park. Now, I have travelled across Australia and internationally competing in these events and I would rate the Pine Valley facility as one of the best I have ever used. The stages developed and constructed by the club were well thought out, challenging with good scores achievable with consistency and concentration. The variety of targetry was outstanding and included swinging, disappearing, moving, turning, and reactive steel targets. The range officers were of a very good standard, they were knowledgeable and accommodating to a fault, which made the competition both fair and enjoyable. The match itself commenced at 9:00am and concluded just after 3:00pm due to the large competitor contingent of 52, with the various IPSC Divisions of Classic (5 competitors), Production (19 competitors), Standard (22 competitors), Open (5 competitors), and Revolver (1) contested.

SOCCER - MENS Mens Soccer WA Police Games

he mens soccer team played 2 pool games winning against NSW firies and then backing up about 2 hours later against South Australian which they lost 4-1. In the semi final aginst New Zealand they lost 5-2 after some great performances from a team that had quite a few injuries. In the playoff for Bronze medal the team really lifted to beat SA 4-1. Congratulations to Justyn Laird and the boys for a great team performance.

SQUASH Squash Competition WA Police Games

eading over to Mandurah for this year’s Games, I was already happy with the number of Qld representatives we had in our little sport that is seemingly in decline nationwide. A total of 36 competitors were registered, 5 of those travelling from our home state. Our group consisted of Cam Kay (QPS), Gopal Venkat (QPS), Susan Alderdice (QPS), Aeron Holzhauser (QFES) and Mark Hey (QCS). Our event was held at the Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre, which was a fantastic state of the art facility, and such a relief to have fresh air conditioned courts. The courts sat front and centre in the building so it was nice to have a lot of foot traffic passing by and giving us all support, the atmosphere was great. The event was run and managed very well with no disruptions, allowing us all to participate and socialise with ease. The combination of a well run event and the fantastic facilities created the atmosphere where all competitors, across all the divisions, were able to chat and mingle and it’s clear that new and lasting friendships have been formed. This is what the games are all about after all! The grading and divisions were well selected and from what I could see, everyone had fun

backgrounds, squash ability yet we all bonded so well and in the end had a nice little circle of friends and it was kind of sad to see us all having to go separate ways. But again, this is what the games are about, and hopefully in 2 years time we all meet up again for more laughs. and challenging matches. The second day saw plenty of matches going to 5 games with close results and players pushed to their limits. Yet, everyone pushed on and the sportsmanship on show was impressive. We were extremely lucky to have a couple of very talented players in the Mens A grade division and it was like watching a PSA level match right in front of our eyes. Gael Gosse from New Caledonia (who apparently achieved the rank of number 28 in France) made squash look effortless. Luckily, WA was able to produce a challenge for him with WA Fireman Paul Hey and their final match grew the crowd that it very much deserved. Even with his impressive agility and stamina, Hey just couldn’t get past the precision of Gosse with the New Caledonian taking the gold medal.

In the end, I was so excited to see that 4 out of our 5 Qld squashies came home with medals! (Our fifth did actually come home with a couple of gold medals in his other event too). I now have a fire in my belly for two years time when the next games will be hosted by NSW in Wollongong. I would love to see a huge Qld contingent head south and show the Blues what we’ve got. So be warned, I’m on a mission to get the word out there and recruit more squashies (as well as competitors for all the other sports!) See you in ‘the Gong’ in 2020.

Our ladies division also included a star WA player with Larissa Huffer making squash look pretty. Personally, I enjoyed watching her textbook squash on day one and was excited to be able to play against someone of her calibre the following day. Across our whole division we had a handful of ladies from all different services,

CLOSING CEREMONY As The Games draw to a close

ike all good things, the XVII Australasian Police and Emergency Services Games 2018 came to an end. The Closing Ceremony was held at the MARQUAY on Saturday 3 November. Medals were presented and the winner of the Games announced. It was a great finish to an exceptional week.

rom September 29 to October 1, 2018, the Queensland Police Bowls Club Championships were held at the Paradise Point Bowls Club, Gold Coast. The bowls club consists of current and former police officers. Non police officers can also join the club as associate members. 20 players competed in singles and pairs games. Senior Constable Matt Tonkin, attached to Bargara Station, was the standout current officer in making it to the semi-finals of the singles competition. he winner of the singles competition was a new associate member Peter Thompson and winner of the pairs were Bob Watts and Graeme Morris, another new associate member. The club championships was the first time in recent memory that the Queensland Police Bowls Club has held a championships carnival and organisers have deemed this event to be a success. The Queensland Police Bowls Club will travel to Western Australia for the 61st Australian Police Bowls Championships which will be hosted by the Busselton Bowling Club from April 4, 2019.

he 2018 Australian Weightlifting Federation (AWF) National Senior and Junior Championships was held in Brisbane from 7-9 September at the Cougars Weightlifing Club in the Sleeman Sports Complex at Chandler. Seven out of eight of Australia’s States and Territories were represented by 165 athletes. Weightlifting comprises of 3 attempts each at two lifts – the snatch and the clean and jerk, and is divided into bodyweight categories. For the first time in Australia, the competition was

divided into new bodyweight categories recently adopted by the International Weightlifting Federation. Queensland was represented by 59 lifters including Queensland Police Officer, Sergeant Bec Tucker (Jakubovsky) lifting in the women’s 59kg category. Qualification to compete at Nationals is of a high standard and used the gradings under the previous weight classes (see below qualification table). The qualifying ‘total’ refers to the combined weight of the lifter’s best snatch and clean and jerk.

Sergeant Bec Tucker, Support Officer, Far North District, regularly travels to compete in weightlifting competitions throughout Queensland and interstate, and prior to the national championships, won a silver medal at the Queensland State Championships along with attaining the qualifying total to represent Queensland and compete at national level.

Whilst still competitive as a senior, Sgt Tucker is categorised in the masters 35-39 age group and was one of four master lifters on the Queensland team who made the cut for Senior Nationals, proving age is no limit. Coming 11th overall in Australia for her (new) weight class, she now also holds three State Master’s records, in the snatch, clean and jerk and total for her age group. Sgt Tucker has been weightlifting now for over three years, and had worked hard to get a personal best snatch of 62kg, and best clean and jerk of 79kg in the former 58kg weight class. Whilst it wasn’t a personal best performance, Sgt Tucker finished her nationals debut with a 61kg snatch, 75kg clean and jerk and three state records and has already started preparations to make the championships in 2019.
