A Message from the Vice President 2020 Australasian Police & Emergency Services Games Wollongong, New South Wales October 17-24
P
lanning is underway for the 2020 Australasian Police & Emergency Services (AP&ES) Games. With 50 sports on offer, there is something for everyone ranging from darts, golf, squash, to all your traditional ‘Olympic’ sports. Close to 5000 competitors are expected to participate in the games, with registrations open (however, temporarily suspended due to Covid-19 outbreak). Competitors will come from across Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific. This biennial event is open to all serving, retired and registered staff and volunteers of eligible law enforcement, defence and emergency services agencies. (see apandesgames.com.au for full list). The Queensland Police Sporting Association (QPSA) are once again sending a contingent of athletes to compete in this event. The QPSA have appointed Senior Sergeant Gary Tobin, Sergeant Belinda Patrick and Senior Constable Ropati Nasalio as the Qld Team Managers. A polo shirt, shorts and cap will be provided free to all existing QPSA members, and at a reasonable price for all non-members. The Qld Team Managers will put out an expression of interest to anyone who is attending the games in the near future via email. Keep an eye out for this email so you can be kept informed and updated regularly. The QPSA will also host the traditional ‘Queensland Night’ during the event. Further details regarding location, date etc will be disseminated by the Qld Managers. The Qld Night is a must event for all participants, and a great opportunity to catch up on the Qld Team progress to date, and of course have a laugh and giggle. The ‘Bite the Box’ challenge will once again feature on the night, so get your team representative ready and in training. Bowls Police Games Bowls wrap Fours Event
T
he fours event was played in great spirit. 4 teams nominated for the Open Fours event. In the novice category consisting of barefoot and inexperienced bowlers, two teams did not nominate leaving only one team. The Novice team skippered by Richard Hoffman competed against the other 4 experienced teams in the Open Category with a five shot handicap in each game. The event consisted of 5 rounds with each team receiving a bye. The games had a time limit with 8 ends maximum. At the end of the preliminary games, the four open teams went through to the finals. The Novice team were great company to play with and were deserving winners of the gold medal for the Novice Fours event. The semi finals of the Open Fours on the second day were won by Matt Tonkin’s and Dan Moore’s teams. Dan’s team won
a closely fought game between the two the previous day but in the gold medal final, Matt’s team reversed the result in another close game. The gold medal final resulted in the gold medal going to Matt’s team and the silver going to Dan’s team. Les Elms’ team got the bronze over Aaron Minns’ team. Results were = Gold medal final - Matt Tonkin 12 defeated Dan Moore 9 Bronze medal final - Les Elms 15 defeated Aaron Minns 11
Pairs The pairs event was the biggest event of the games with 9 teams contesting the Open Category and 4 teams contesting the Novice Category. The Open category consisted of 3 groups of three teams in sectional play. Each game had a time limit and a maximum of 16 ends. Each group had two games and a bye with the winner of each section and the next best team going through to the finals the following day. The sectional winners
at the end of the preliminary games were Dan Moore’s team, Adam Taylor’s team and Troy Kent’s team. Next best overall was Matt Tonkin’s team. With Aaron Minns unable to play in Matt Tonkin’s team for the finals, veteran Tom Moores subbed in place of Aaron. The semi finals resulted in wins to Adam Taylors team and Matt Tonkin’s team. The gold medal final resulted in a win for Adam over Matt 24-8 and the bronze medal final resulted in a narrow win for Dan Moore’s team over Troy Kent’s team 13-11. In the Novice Pairs, each team played each other once resulting in three games for the day. Placings at the end of the first day were: - 1) Adam Housdens team, 2) Aaron Firth’s team, 3) Mitchell Lollback’s team, and 4) Ben Hillier’s team. The gold medal final resulted in Aaron’s team winning a close game of Adam’s team 15-10. Many of the ends in this game would not have been out of place in the open category. The bronze medal final resulted in another close game ending in 16-14 to Ben’s team over Mitchell’s team. No team left without a trophy with Mitchell’s team accepting the wooden spoon from their opponents.

Bowls cont.. Overview Singles Ten bowlers contested the Open singles after no bowlers nominated for the Novice category. The games consisted of sectional play with three bowlers in two of the sections and 4 bowlers in the fourth section. Games again had a time limit or 17up, whichever came first. Sectional winners for the rounds were Matt Tonkin, Aaron Minns, Neville Ingram with Henk Degen qualifying as the fourth semi finalist. Finals were 21 shots up with a time limit of 2hours. In the first semi final Matt defeated Neville and the second semi final resulted in Aaron defeating Henk. Both the gold medal final and bronze medal were classic games where the result went down to the last bowl. In the bronze medal game, both Nev and Henk were tied on 20-all when Nev trails the jack on the last bowl to win 21-20. In the gold medal final, Aaron was leading 20-18 and holding shot when Matt drove on the last bowl, hitting the jack into the ditch to score three shots to win 21-20. Hockey Brett Forte Memorial Hockey Match
O
n the 19th of October, some long serving members of the Redcliffe Hockey Club and members from the QPS, laced up the boots to go head to head in the 3rd annual Brett Forte Memorial Hockey Match. This is a game that both teams look forward to each year and is always a very hard-fought match that is played in great spirit. Families of players were
there to support and cheer on both teams. The game started in the usual high pace fashion with some incredible 3D skills on display from both teams. It only took five minutes before a QPS raid down the right-hand side of the field, resulted in a wonderful cross to Kacie Trost who found the back of the goal. Redcliffe nearly answered back with their own goal 10 minutes later with
a wonderful shot from a penalty corner being saved on the line by goalkeeper Matthew Johnson. The arm wrestle then took hold with some great attacking play coming from both teams, only to be turned away by some stalwart defence. Fortunately, both squads were prepared with plenty of substitutions who were keen to represent in honour of Brett Forteâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s memory.

Hockey Brett Forte Memorial Hockey Match
I
t took a beautiful aerial cross in the third quarter to keep the scoreboard ticking over, with another goal by Kacie Trost. Redcliffe responded shortly after with a wonderful strike by David Halliday finding the back of the net. He repeated his brilliance shortly after with a shot from the top of the circle slamming into the backboard of the goal. The score was now 2-2 and the QPS team were starting to have flashbacks from the previous year where they squandered a 2-0 lead to fall short 3-5 to the Redcliffe team. The scores remained locked leading into the last two minutes of the game, and both teams were still fighting hard with all they had. The last chance to break the deadlock seemed to be with Redcliffe as they had possession of the ball in the QPS half with 22 seconds remaining in the game. A fantastic bit of defence and a cool head by Lee Harnden forced a turnover and saw the ball passed with silky accuracy down the right-hand side of the field. A cross to the centre of the field has then found Ian Baker in front of the goal with the ball on his stick to secure the first victory for the QPS team with only 2 seconds remaining in the game.

The Brett Forte Memorial match has now seen three very successful years and has raised thousands of dollars for Police Legacy. he Full-Bore competition was held on Saturday the 12th of October 2019 at the North Arm Rifle Range Complex, on the Sunshine Coast. The days competition comprised separate events as follows: • a short range match held over 300 metres and 500 yards; • 2 mid range matches held over 600 yards; and • an aggregate of both the short and long range matches. he 2019 Queensland Police Games -Touch Football was held at the Qld Police Academy, Oxley on Saturday 12 October. The weather conditions were cool and damp in the morning however by 11:00am it turned into a perfect day for touch with sunny blue skies. The competition hosted five mixed sides and three menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s opens sides to fight it out for medals presentation. There was also a super series between the best Mixed and Menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sides to add some extra spectator interest into the games. Too much added sugar can be one of the greatest threats to cardiovascular disease. Here is how to curb your sweet habit.
S
ugar has a bittersweet reputation when it comes to health. Sugar occurs naturally in all foods that contain carbohydrates, such as fruits and vegetables, grains, and dairy. Consuming whole foods that contain natural sugar is okay. Plant foods also have high amounts of fiber, essential minerals, and antioxidants, and dairy foods contain protein and calcium. Since your body digests these foods slowly, the sugar in them offers a steady supply of energy to your cells. A high intake of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains also has been shown to reduce the risk of chronic diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease, and some cancers.
Consuming too much sugar However, problems occur when you consume too much added sugar — that is, sugar that food manufacturers add to products to increase flavor or extend shelf life.
In the American diet, the top sources are soft drinks, fruit drinks, flavored yogurts, cereals, cookies, cakes, candy, and most processed foods. But added sugar is also present in items that you may not think of as sweetened, like soups, bread, cured meats, and ketchup. The result: we consume way too much added sugar. Adult men take in an average of 24 teaspoons of added sugar per day, according to the National Cancer Institute. That’s equal to 384 calories. “Excess sugar’s impact on obesity and diabetes is well documented, but one area that may surprise many men is how their taste for sugar can have a serious impact on their heart health,” says Dr. Frank Hu, professor of nutrition at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Impact on your heart In a study published in 2014 in JAMA Internal Medicine, Dr. Hu and his colleagues found an association between a high-sugar diet and a greater risk of dying from heart disease. Over the course of the 15-year study, people who got 17% to 21% of their calories from added sugar had a 38% higher risk of dying from cardiovascular disease compared with those who consumed 8% of their calories as added sugar.

The Sweet Danger of Sugar “Basically, the higher the intake of added sugar, the higher the risk for heart disease,” says Dr. Hu. How sugar actually affects heart health is not completely understood, but it appears to have several indirect connections. For instance, high amounts of sugar overload the liver. “Your liver metabolizes sugar the same way as alcohol, and converts dietary carbohydrates to fat,” says Dr. Hu. Over time, this can lead to a greater accumulation of fat, which may turn into fatty liver disease, a contributor to diabetes, which raises your risk for heart disease. Consuming too much added sugar can raise blood pressure and increase chronic inflammation, both of which are pathological pathways to heart disease. Excess consumption of sugar, especially in sugary beverages, also contributes to weight gain by tricking your body into turning off its appetitecontrol system because liquid calories are not as satisfying as calories from solid foods. This is why it is easier for people to add more calories to their regular diet when consuming sugary beverages. “The effects of added sugar intake — higher blood pressure, inflammation, weight gain, diabetes, and fatty liver disease — are all linked to an increased risk for heart attack and stroke,” says Dr. Hu.

How much is okay? If 24 teaspoons of added sugar per day is too much, then what is the right amount? It’s hard to say, since sugar is not a required nutrient in your diet. The Institute of Medicine, which sets Recommended Dietary Allowances, or RDAs, has not issued a formal number for sugar. However, the American Heart Association suggests that men consume no more than 150 calories (about 9 teaspoons or 36 grams) of added sugar per day. That is close to the amount in a 12-ounce can of soda. Subtracting added sugar

The Sweet Danger of Sugar Reading food labels is one of the best ways to monitor your intake of added sugar. Look for the following names for added sugar and try to either avoid, or cut back on the amount or frequency of the foods where they are found: ■ Brown sugar ■ Corn sweetener ■ Corn syrup ■ Fruit juice concentrates ■ High-fructose corn syrup ■ Honey ■ Invert sugar ■ Malt sugar ■ Molasses ■ Syrup sugar molecules ending in “ose” (dextrose, fructose, glucose, lactose, maltose, sucrose). Total sugar, which includes added sugar, is often listed in grams. Note the number of grams of sugar per serving as well as the total number of servings. “It might only say 5 grams of sugar per serving, but if the normal amount is three or four servings, you can easily consume 20 grams of sugar and thus a lot of added sugar,” says Dr. Hu.

lso, keep track of sugar you add to your food or beverages. About half of added sugar comes from beverages, including coffee and tea. A study in the May 2017 Public Health found that about twothirds of coffee drinkers and one-third of tea drinkers put sugar or sugary flavorings in their drinks. The researchers also noted that more than 60% of the calories in their beverages came from added sugar. Yet, Dr. Hu warns against being overzealous in your attempts to cut back on added sugar, as this can backfire. “You may find yourself reaching for other foods to satisfy your sweet cravings, like refined starches, such as white bread and white rice, which can increase glucose levels, and comfort foods high in saturated fat and sodium, which also cause problems with heart health,” he says.
