LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT On behalf of the Board of Directors and staff, I welcome you to the Houston Polo Club. The Houston Polo Club has a rich history dating back over 90 years to the late 1920s when we opened our first fields at the corner of San Felipe and Post Oak Boulevard. Today, HPC is the largest polo club in the United States, per player. In 2020, 150 HPC and United States Polo Association members took to the field to play the most exhilarating and oldest sport in recorded history. The Houston Polo Club is a not-for-profit organization, and we invest members’ and guest dollars right back into our polo and riding programs here and throughout the southwest United States. Every year we look for new ways to serve the entire riding community and build the Sport of Kings in Texas. Our Polo School and Step Up programs develop new players, from the youngest enthusiasts to new mature players, to join our polo community. Houston Polo Club takes special interest in developing the next generation of polo greats through our dedicated Junior Polo, Interscholastic and Team USPA programs. In addition to polo, the club offers full equestrian facilities, including onsite boarding, as well as English and Hunter Jumper riding lessons for children and adults. Our 26-acre setting provides the perfect environment for horse lovers to develop their riding skills.

To build a strong community, however, a club must offer its players the opportunity to get onto the field and grow their game. Over our spring and fall seasons, we host six league levels ranging from beginner to 8 goal. In addition to league play, we host national-level USPA tournaments each season. Included are the Southwest Regional Classic, the Masters Cup, the Western Challenge, and the National Youth Tournament Series. This year also marks the 27th year of our ever-growing Women’s Championship Tournament. The Houston Polo Club would like to acknowledge and thank the corporate sponsors that support us throughout the year.Without their generosity, we would not be able to bring you world-class, adrenalinefilled polo. With the support of our sponsors, players, and members, the Houston Polo Club will continue to grow with the goal of being the best polo club in the world. Thank you,

Charles Fridge, III Chairman and President of the Board of Directors

GOALS, SCORES, AND HANDICAPS There are many uses for the term “goal” in the sport of polo. On the field, a goal is scored each time a ball fully crosses between the goalposts at any height. Every time a goal is scored, the teams switch directions to equalize playing conditions. The second common use for the term “goal” refers to a player’s handicap or goal rating. A player’s handicap is a rating between -2 (or C) and 10, with a 10-goal player being the very best in the world. Club-based rating committees decide the handicap of each player based on playing ability, horsemanship, team play, horses, and knowledge of the game. Players’ goal ratings are used to build equal teams. The handicap of a team is the sum total of all of its players’ ratings, and the final score of a match is adjusted according to discrepancies in the two teams’ handicaps. So, if you are attending a 6-goal match, teams are composed of players whose sum goal rating equals six.

SAFETY RULES Polo is a high-intensity, high-speed sport. Watching ponies pounding down the field, it quickly becomes clear why most rules are in place to protect the ponies and players. When a foul is called by one of the two umpires on the field, the severity of the infraction and resulting

26 HOUSTO N P OLO C LUB

penalty is judged on a scale of 1 to 9, based on how dangerous the infraction was to the horse or player. The “line of the ball” is a key concept when it comes to safety. Once a ball is hit, the player who is closest to the ball with the narrowest angle has the right of way. Opposing players cannot cross the line too close to the player who has the right of way, nor can they approach the “on line” player at too sharp an angle, or they risk a foul and subsequent penalty. The speed and angle at which a player approaches an opponent are also important. When approaching an opposing player to initiate a ride-off (or bump—akin to a body check in hockey), with horses pressing shoulder-on-shoulder, the approach must happen at no more than a 45-degree angle, or a foul is called.

PLAYER POSITIONS On the field, player positions are represented by the numbers on their polo jerseys—from one to four. The Number One player primarily assumes an offensive position on the field and is responsible for neutralizing the opposing team’s Number Four player—their primary defense. The Number Two is the mover and shaker, a transition player who backs up the Number One player and aggressively seeks to move the ball upfield. The Number Three player is the quarterback, who focuses on game strategy, field advantage, and moving the ball. This player is often the highest-rated player on the team. Finally, player Number Four is primarily responsible for guarding the goal and preventing the opposing team from scoring.

PONIES Polo ponies are thoroughbreds or part thoroughbred and part quarter horse, selected for their agility, speed, endurance, and intelligence. It takes two to three years to train a green pony, whose polo career can last over 15 years.

SPECTATOR PARTICIPATION While the high-speed action remains on the field, there is a lot of fun to be had on the sidelines! Join us on the sidelines to watch polo every Sunday. Heighten your experience by buying a corporate box to entertain clients and reward employees. At half-time, spectators are invited onto the field to replace pieces of turf dug up by the horses during play. A great complement to the Divot Stomp is a tall glass of Champagne!

GET IN THE GAME When you get tired of sitting on the sidelines, it’s time to check out Houston’s premier Polo School. Polo players come from all backgrounds—some bring riding experience, others bring a great golf swing. Regardless, the adrenaline of combining horsemanship with hand-eye coordination hooks hundreds of players each year. Lessons can be a rigorous start to your polo career or a casual weekend pastime for family and friends. See page 42 for more details!

1 POLO MALLET: Polo mallets have bamboo or plastic shafts that are flexible and can make a complete arc under the pony’s neck or tail.

5 SADDLE AND BREASTPLATE: Polo saddles have little padding under the leg, allowing for maximum movement, and the breastplate prevents the saddle from slipping during the game.

2 HELMET: Hard, lined helmets protect the player’s head from swinging mallets and balls traveling up to 100 mph. 3 BREECHES: Polo players always wear white breeches. 4 RIDING BOOTS AND KNEE PADS: Polo boots and knee pads provide protection for the player’s lower legs and knees.

6 POLO WRAPS: These protective wraps shield the pony’s legs against contact with the ball or other ponies. 7 DRAW REINS AND BRIDLE: This series of leather strapping, metal bit, and supports gives the player steering and stopping control.

OPTIMIZE YOUR LIFE –

OPTIMIZE YOUR GAME Polo attracts a certain type of person: they love horses, they love adrenaline, and they love the challenge of a game that fuses the physical with the mental. Some Houston Polo Club players come to polo as young people—and many are introduced to the sport later in their lives, in their 40s and 50s.You can often spot family teams on our fields with two— or even three—generations of players. It is a game you can play for a lifetime—if you take care of yourself. Like any physical activity—whether you are a runner, cyclist, or a recreational football player—polo requires a holistic approach to physical and mental fitness that considers preventive wellness in order to prepare for, play, and recover from a game (or even a practice). We spoke to Dr. Marc Feldman and Dr. Lizabeth Riley of Baylor Medicine Stratos Integrated Health about how a holistic approach to physical and mental wellness can support not only your game, but everything you do off the field. In addition to offering individual attention and planning with a primary care physician, Baylor Stratos has a dedicated wellness team designed to maintain and improve the health of their patients. “The wellness coaches work in nutrition, physiology, and behavior therapy. All have a set number of visits that come with the concierge service,” explains Dr. Riley. “They will give you a plan, you work on it, and then you come back for re-evaluation. For example, if you are working with our Exercise Physiologist, Joel Patlan, he will give you a plan that you can take to your trainer to implement.” Marc Feldman, M.D.

32 HOUSTO N P OLO C LUB

Lizabeth Riley, M.D.

But integrating wellness goals like improving your diet and sticking to a workout regimen involves more than just information—it involves developing your current mindset and adapting your habits to align them with your goals on the field. That is where work with a behavioral therapist can help. “A behavioral therapist will look at habits that are taking you down a path that is counter to your goals,” explains Dr. Riley.“They could be nutrition or poor sleep patterns. This is someone who works on how to modify those habits that will lead to improving your overall health.” “It is difficult to separate someone’s health needs into physical and behavioral,” adds Dr. Feldman. “Think about someone with high blood pressure. There is more to managing that than just:‘Take this pill, and we’ll check it in a week.’Are you eating properly? Are you exercising regularly? How is your stress managed? More often than not, by addressing all of those issues, it’s amazing how blood pressure—or sugar and cholesterol levels—improve and even normalize.” Polo is an incredible workout for your mind, body, and spirit. Everything you do off the field has a direct correlation to your performance on the field—and your ability to recover and get back out there. “Athletes are very health-conscious,” says Dr. Feldman. “Our role as physicians is to keep them out of harm’s way. We look at the big picture and consider: How can we maintain or improve your quality of life? How can we help you stay at the top of your game?”

INTEGRATING MIND, BODY, AND SPIRIT Baylor Medicine Stratos Integrated Health’s wellness team offers strategies to optimize your performance—on and off the field. Nutrition Registered Dietitian for Baylor Stratos, Emily Monfiletto It is essential to make sure that you are eating a balanced diet and staying hydrated well before a match. • Diet: Make sure to include a balanced pre-match meal focusing on quality sources of carbohydrates such as fruits, whole grains, dairy, starchy vegetables for energy, as well as a lean source of protein to help with the repair of muscles after the match. • Hydration: This is just as important as eating a balanced meal. Make sure you are adequately hydrated by monitoring your urine (clear to pale yellow is ideal) and increasing fluids as needed in order to achieve this. Continue to stay hydrated during a match by replacing fluid lost with water or even an electrolyte beverage, especially in hot/humid conditions. Lastly, for recovery, consider weighing yourself before and after a match. For every pound lost, replace it with 20 oz of fluid. • Recovery nutrition: Focus on replacing fuel that was used during the competition. Try consuming a snack like a fruit and yogurt smoothie, low-fat chocolate milk, greek yogurt with fruit or meal such as grilled chicken, small baked potato and roasted broccoli within 1 hour of completing the competition, with a focus on carbohydrates (to replace energy stores) and protein (to aid in the repair of muscle tissue damage).

Physical Fitness Clinical Exercise Physiologist for Baylor Stratos, Joel Patlan Due to polo’s unique nature, the sport requires the coordination of motor skills and core strength, with special attention given to sufficient recovery efforts. • Whole-body focus: Polo requires deep core, spine and hip strength, coupled with mobility in the upper body. This can be accomplished by tailoring whole-body strength and conditioning exercises specific to improving mobility and core and lower body strength. • Limit overuse: Understanding the physical mechanics most utilized in polo can help players determine appropriate exercises to do in order to limit overuse along certain joint segments. This minimizes the risk of long-term injury via the wrist, lower back, and shoulders. Psychological Well-Being Licensed Clinical Psychologist for Baylor Stratos, Brittany O’Brien, Ph.D. Psychological well-being and adequate, restful sleep are critical for optimal athletic performance. Yet, a high proportion of athletes report mental health difficulties, including anxiety and depression, as well as difficulties with sleep. Depression and anxiety are treatable conditions, and it is important to remember that seeking help for these issues is a sign of strength, not weakness. To promote and maintain quality sleep, follow these tips: • Consistency is key. Choose a bedtime and waketime that allows for adequate sleep. Stick to these times as much as possible, even on weekends or on days when you may need to stay up later or could sleep in. If you have a bad night’s sleep, don’t compensate by taking a nap the next day, moving up your bedtime, or sleeping in. • Create a relaxing bedtime routine. Plan out activities you want and need to do before bed, and consider adding some relaxing activities to the routine to help you unwind. This might include a bath or shower, aromatherapy, a mindfulness exercise, listening to music, or some light, pleasurable reading. Screen time (including watching TV, checking emails, playing games on one’s phone, or scrolling on social media) is discouraged. • The bed is for sleep only! Do not do work in bed, watch TV in bed, respond to emails and texts in bed. Also, if you wake up in the middle of the night and can’t fall back asleep, do not stay in bed tossing, turning, and thus not sleeping. Get out of bed and go to a chair or a different room, and read a magazine or book until you feel sleepy. Then return to bed. Do this as many times as necessary throughout the night. • Worry later. If falling asleep, or returning to sleep, is difficult because you find yourself worried about something, gently tell yourself it’s ok to be worried. Write down what you are worried about on a piece of paper you keep next to your bed and tell yourself you can and will worry about it later and during the day when you are better positioned to work on solving the problem you are worried about. Make sure to return to that piece of paper the next day and work on the problem. And, if you can’t control the worry, consult a mental health professional.

BTA FAMILY WORKOUT The Beal family comes from quite a polo pedigree: the BTA family polo team has been playing for 60 years! Carlton Beal was a Hall of Fame 6-goal player who served as a governor of the USPA, the Polo Training Foundation, and the Museum of Polo and Hall of Fame. Carlton won several titles in his career, including the U.S. Open Championship (1952) and the Inter-Circuit Cup (1956). The BTA family polo team is headed by Kelly and Chrys, with daughter KC and long-time pro and son-in-law Steve Krueger. Steve has been playing professionally in the United States since a storied run for

Texas A&M brought three national titles and a PTF Player of the Year award. BTA has found a home at Houston Polo Club for the past 10 years, where KC is an integral part of the Houston Polo Club team as Polo Manager, organizing over 20 teams each season for games and tournaments at the club and at its 18 affiliate fields. The family plays together—and they have set up a simple home gym to work out together too! Kelly, Chrys, KC, and Steve show us some fundamentals that keep their bodies strong and mobile for the field.

SHOULDER MOBILITY STRETCH The main benefit of this particular stretch is shoulder mobility. We use and abuse our shoulders, and this stretch helps keep the shoulder muscles from “freezing.” The better range of motion that comes as a result carries over to a better polo swing. The twist and balance involved with the stretch also transfer over to the polo field, as a player must have the balance to ride the horse and twist to look over their shoulder during the game.

34 HOUSTO N P OLO C LUB

THORACIC MOBILITY STRETCH This stretch keeps the lumbar spine and the shoulders working properly together. This particular stretch requires you to have stability in your hips while your upper body is rotating. On the polo field, a player needs balance in the lower half of the body while the upper half must rotate to swing and hit the ball.

BODYWEIGHT ROWS This exercise strengthens biceps, core and back muscles. It helps with the player’s stability on the horse and conditions the muscles needed when swinging the mallet and stopping the horse.

MEDICINE BALL SLAMS This exercise strengthens the core and adds cardio to the workout. It helps prep a player for polo season. Even though nothing can get you fit for polo, doing cardio before starting a season can help. I usually do 10–12 reps in a row.

SKATERS The twist with one leg behind the other and the added weight helps with balance and builds strength in the arms, glutes, and back. Jumping from side to side while rowing helps with cardio also!

PLANK WITH OPPOSITE ARM AND LEG CRUNCH I like the balance pose best at the end of a workout. It helps focus on balance when you’re tired, which can translate to a polo match when you need to control your breathing and heart rate to focus on penalty shots. The core gets stronger and stabilizes your balance, helping your riding and ability to be more comfortable on your horse. Healthy as a Horse If you are new to the world of horse ownership, you are waking up to the knowledge that caring for your equine athlete requires time, dedication, and a new set of skills and knowledge. We asked Dr. Gustavo De Cillo of De Cillo Equine Clinic to give us a rundown of the basics of horse care for new horse owners.

NUTRITION There are two important components to your horse’s diet: hydration and nutrition. Both are based on the horse’s energy output and performance. “We feed the horses depending on how active their life is,” explains Dr. De Cillo. “If a horse is working at a high-performance level, like in the 8-goal league, they really require a huge amount of energy provided from their feed. A horse that plays polo once a week in the Margarita League doesn’t require as many calories. We will ask a client: What are you going to do with this horse? How often are you going to ride and for how long? That will give us good information about how much energy a horse needs, and we tailor the nutrition to those needs.” During the season, your horse’s diet will consist of good quality hay and alfalfa that is clean, dry (to prevent mold), and has high protein content. In the off-season, if you turn your horse out, they are pretty self-sustaining: they will subsist on the pasture grass with a little bit of help from hay if it gets really cold.

Hydration is also extremely important for a 1,000-lb animal that is performing in Houston’s often severe heat and humidity. Dr. De Cillo warns that horses are as finicky as we are about their water: keep it clean and cool, change it twice a day, and make sure that they are drinking it. If you notice a drop off in their water consumption, especially in the heat of summer, call your vet immediately.

COLD WEATHER CARE Horses heat their bodies internally through a fermentation chamber in their large intestines, more specifically, the cecum. When they metabolize their forage (grasses and hay), it produces heat. If the temperature dips, you can double their hay to stoke their internal furnaces (and give them a blanket). Because horses are very particular about their water sources, they may stop drinking if the water is too cold. “When the temperature drops, horses don’t feel like they need to drink water anymore, and they decrease the amount of water they drink,” warns Dr. De Cillo. “That can lead to colic and all sorts of ailments. The person taking care of the horse is the most important person in their life because they will be able to tell if a horse is not drinking as much as they usually do. The owner’s attention to these details is so important.”

THEHOUSTONPOLOCLUB.COM 39

COMMON HEALTH PROBLEMS Dr. De Cillo offers five red flags that signal that you should get your horse in as soon as possible for an examination: • Abdominal discomfort: One of the most common abdominal ailments in horses is colic. The treatment can range from a basic anti-inflammatory to surgery for extreme cases, so bring your horse in if you notice a change in personality or behaviour, they stop eating or drinking, they are pawing at the ground, lying down or rolling around. • Lameness: If your horse avoids putting weight on one of their legs, a vet can rule out life-threatening conditions such as fractures or tissue infections. • Trouble breathing: If your horse is having trouble inhaling or exhaling, it could point to a life-threatening condition like severe COPD or an obstruction in the upper respiratory tract that requires immediate care. • Eyes: If a horse’s eye is tearing, red, or sensitive, you should act immediately. Eye issues can get worse very quickly.

EXERCISE It goes without saying that regular exercise is important. Horses require exercise in order to make sure their digestive systems are running smoothly and to prepare them for their performance on the field. If you are playing chukkers once a week, your horse should be exercised a minimum of three times per week. This will help develop your horse’s cardiorespiratory health, increase the elasticity and strength of tendons and ligaments, and increase their bone density—all crucial to preventing serious injury.

ANNUAL CHECKUPS Assuming that the horse is generally healthy, Dr. De Cillo recommends seeing your equine vet at least once a year for a thorough checkup. At that appointment, the vet will do a complete physical: listening to the horse’s heart, lungs, and gut; checking their eyes and ears; and examining the quality of their coat and any notable weight change. The vet will examine your horse’s gums and their mouth tooth by tooth: their teeth can become uneven and can fracture or develop cavities, which can cause pain and result in weight loss. Acting on minor issues regularly can prevent pain and more serious—and costly—conditions in the long run. At that appointment, the vet will also update your horse’s regular vaccinations. Dr. De Cillo recommends vaccinations for rabies, strangles, and a combo shot that protects against tetanus, influenza and rhino,West Nile, and encephalitis. These vaccines will not only protect your horse, but they will also protect the horses they live with from communicable viruses. In some cases, horses will need boosters at the 6-month mark, depending on their risk—but your vet will advise you if that is the case.

Caring for your equine teammate through proper nutrition, exercise, and regular healthcare will ensure that your pony enjoys an incredible life with you—on and off the field! De Cillo Equine Clinic has four vets on staff that are available for regular medical care as well as emergency appointments during regular or after-hours. They take care of your horse at their clinic, or in emergencies when the horse cannot be transported, they will come to your farm.

2020 HOUSTON WOMEN'S POLO CHAMPIONSHIP PRESENTED BY LUXURY EVENT TRAILERS AND J. MCLAUGHLIN WITH CONTRIBUTIONS FROM THE USPA

Each November, as the culmination of its Fall Season, the Houston Polo Club hosts its Women’s Tournament. In 2020, the 27th annual tournament saw 24 teams compete over five days in 22 matches in five different levels of play: the Farish Cup Invitational, the Bayou Cup Invitational, the Ladies’ Junior Invitational, the US Open Women’s Handicap, and the Texas Women's Open.

THEHOUSTONPOLOCLUB.COM 49

TEXAS WOMEN'S OPEN Filled with a competitive fire after claiming the second finalist position, Iconica (Madison Outhier, Hope Arellano, Kylie Sheehan, and Maureen Brennan) was eager to challenge defending champions Polo Gear Coffee Company (Dawn Jones, Danielle Lussi, Tiffany Busch, and Clarissa Echezarreta) in the Texas Women’s Open Final on Sunday, November 15. Coached by none other than four-time U.S. Open Polo Championship™ winner Kristy Outhier and 2021 Hall of Fame inductee Julio Arellano, Iconica’s familial expertise and close team bonds proved the key to their 3.5–2 victory, adding their names to the prestigious trophy at the Houston Polo Club. “No matter what was happening on the field, we maintained a very man-based strategy. On offense, Kylie [Sheehan] and Hope [Arellano] worked very well together in the back and I alternated between shielding for them and being very dedicated to staying with one of their backs.” —Maureen Brennan, Iconica “This is probably my biggest win to date in my women's polo career. It’s just such an honor to get to play at this level.” — Kylie Sheehan, Iconica

Winner: Iconica: Kristy Outhier, Maureen Brennan, Hope Arellano, Kylie Sheehan (not pictured: Madi Outhier), presented by Tyler May from J. McLaughlin and Jennifer Goudeau from Luxury Event Trailers

“I believe I fulfilled most of my responsibility of marking Kylie Sheehan 70% of the game to help my team. Marking is a skill I have been trying to develop these last few years along with attacking goal while playing the number one position. I was very impressed by all of the teams who participated and congratulations to Iconica for a well-played win!” —Dawn Jones, Most Valuable Player, Polo Gear Coffee Company

THE PROFESSIONALS

Shane Rice and Steve Krueger on the polo field

54 HOUSTO N P OLO C LUB

STEVE KRUEGER

Did you have any early polo mentors?

Growing up as an all-around athlete in Argyle, TX, Steve Krueger played many sports in high school, including taking three national championships on the Fort Worth Interscholastic team. When Steve graduated high school, he began playing professionally in the Houston area while completing his Industrial Engineering Degree at Texas A&M. While in college, he joined the Aggie Intercollegiate Polo Team and went on to win three national titles and the Polo Training Foundation Player of the Year award. Steve is a 4-goal pro who has played professionally in Wellington and Sarasota, FL; Santa Barbara, CA; Sheridan,WY; and Houston,TX.

My dad was my first mentor in the earlier stages of learning to play polo. Before I went to college, I played in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. There are a bunch of little clubs around there: I played at the Las Colinas Polo Club and Oak Grove Polo Club in Decatur, which was owned by Barbara Branson. Another big part of my early career was a patron named Jesse Pruitt. He always had me on his teams and was a big help when I was younger. There are a million people that have helped me throughout my career. Barbara, Jesse, and my dad were really important in my early playing.

When did you start playing polo?

As I started my professional career, my mentor was Hector Galindo. Hector used to play in a charity game for MD Anderson every year when I was a kid. I got to see him play and meet him there. When I got out of college, I went to work for him in Florida during the highgoal season. Hector is the one who shaped my career as a pro the most.

When I was growing up, my dad played polo, so polo and riding were always hand in hand. I played Interscholastic arena polo, then I switched to playing football in high school. I went back to playing Intercollegiate polo in college at Texas A&M. I started playing pro in college. I worked for a patron who lived in College Station, and we would play polo at the Houston Polo Club, which is how I was introduced into the Houston Polo scene. I started playing professionally in college, and after I graduated, I began playing professionally full time.

What brought you to the Houston Polo Club? Houston Polo Club is the biggest member club in the nation. There’s a lot of polo here and a lot of opportunities to make a living for

THEHOUSTONPOLOCLUB.COM 55

professional players at my level. In other clubs, everyone is centred in the same club, but Houston has a lot of affiliate clubs, so you are spread out, and you have the space to do your own thing, and then everyone meets in the middle at the Houston Polo Club. I like it because you have the whole spectrum: you have some really high-end places to play and some very down-to-earth places, so you get the best of all worlds. What does a typical year look like for you? I play with BTA in Houston in the spring and fall seasons, Florida in the winter, and Sheridan,Wyoming in the summer. The past few years, I was playing on the Coca-Cola team at the International Polo Club Palm Beach in high-goal polo, and this year I am playing with BTA in the 14-goal league. What were your highlights of the 2020 season? The big highlight in 2020 was winning the President’s Cup in Houston in the spring.

SHANE RICE Shane Rice grew up in Poway, California, in an extended family of riders. Shane had an illustrious beginning in the cowboy polo circuit, before getting involved with arena polo and then outdoor. In high school, Shane played Interscholastic polo with his sister and cousin, winning four regional and two national titles. After school, he played in California for two years before heading out for his first season at the Houston Polo Club. Shane is rated 4 goals and splits his professional time between seasons in Houston, California, and Wyoming. How did you get your start in polo? I was practically born on a horse. I played with my grandfather, uncle, mother, sister, and cousin, and we all played arena for the most part. Before that, we played a different version: cowboy polo. Basically, you take a construction helmet and put a steel face mask on it. And then you take a 60” graphite mallet and put a rubber head with a lead in it on the end. It was:“see ball, hit ball, no rules—just hang on the horse and swing a mallet.” Vicki Owens and Tom Bixby in Del Mar got our family into arena polo. It was a little more fun and a little more controlled—and we didn’t have to drive as far every weekend. Tom had to sit us down and explain some things pretty quickly. I’ve spent my life trying to unlearn some of the stuff I did in cowboy polo! When did you start playing outdoor polo? Carlos Galindo plucked me out at 14 years old. I worked for him during winter and summer breaks, and he would put me on teams and get me into tournaments. At that time, we were just starting our high school team. My sister and I played all four years in Interscholastic. Because there was no one to play with in Poway, we enlisted the help of my cousin—he was in the

56 HOUSTO N P OLO C LUB

6th grade, and I don’t even know if he was 4 feet tall! The first year, they were wondering, “Who are these kids from Poway?”—one goofy looking ogre (that was me), my sister, and then this little person (my cousin) running around the field. They didn’t take us seriously. They were like, “Well, it’s good you came out for the experience.” Then we won the tournament. They took us more seriously the next year.

As his groom, whether he meant to or not, he set me up to see the whole operation. It really helped me be prepared for the life. Right before I came to Houston, Carlos said: “Hey you can keep playing out of your suitcase if you want, but if you want to broaden your horizons, you need a string.”They gave me four horses that I had been playing and helped me buy four more so I could get to where I needed to go. If it wasn’t for Carlos, I would have been behind the eight ball. That summer in Houston, I went from having eight horses to 14.Then I had to play some polo to feed my horses! What keeps you coming back to Houston?

How did you start your polo career after high school? I spent two years playing in Indio and San Diego and working for Carlos Galindo. I spent a lot of time watching Carlos run his ranch, breed his horses, and get ready to head out to Wyoming.

The people, first and foremost—and I just love Texas. The first time I drove in, I got chills looking at the Farish Field and the main barn. It sank in that I was coming to a club that has 14- and 20goal matches. It was a whole different level from my California days—and especially my cowboy polo days! I had to really step it up! Houston has some of the best fields in the States. I was always

taught to save my good horses for the winter and summer seasons—but you have to bring your good horses to Houston. It’s well structured and organized, and that promotes quality on the field. And then you get to go have a great BBQ at somebody’s ranch afterward! What was the highlight of your 2020 season? Bar none, the Texas Open. I have been in the finals 5 or 6 times but never won it. We beat Tonkawa, who is a great team and had beat us the year before. It was on my bucket list—I wanted to get those Texas Open spurs! What are you looking forward to this season? I am really looking forward to the Houston season. The Livingston Memorial is one I hold close to my heart, so I would love to win that one. I bought a few new horses and have two or three babies hitting the ground. I consider Texas home, so any time I am away for more than a month, I want to get back.
