Am 7 April 2024 findet die erste gemeinsame Ausstellung von Edith Burggraff und François Valentiny in der Valentiny Foundation in Remerschen statt.

Während François Valentiny eher für sein architektonisches Werk bekannt ist, hat er seit seiner frühen Jugend kontinuierlich gezeichnet, gemalt und an Skulpturen gearbeitet. Ebenso Edith Burggraff, die seit den 1980er Jahren als freischaffende Künstlerin mit Schwerpunkt auf Malerei und Holzskulptur in Luxemburg und im Ausland arbeitet.

Nach ihrem Studium in Wien haben die beiden 1980 geheiratet. Ich wurde 1991 geboren und zeichne mich verantwortlich für den vorliegenden Katalog, der einen Blick auf das Leben und Werken meiner Eltern eröffnet. Dabei spielen Reisen nach Brasilien, China, Österreich, in das zweite Zuhause nach Wien und Salzburg, wo die beiden seit Jahrzehnten gemeinsam die Sommer Festspiele besuchen, eine wichtige Rolle in der Entwicklung ihrer Malerei, in dem die Orte Farben und Motive der Arbeiten beeinflussten.

Der Leser entdeckt einen organischen Zugang, der gepaart mit ausgewählten biographischen Details der beiden Künstler, die Entwicklung des Werks im Laufe der Jahre zeichnet. Dabei ähnelt der Aufbau der Publikation einer intuitiven Reise durch die Welt, die sich die beiden zeit ihres bisherigen gemeinsamen Lebens aufgebaut und erarbeitet haben.

Auch das Zuhause von Edith und François in Remerschen, wo sie sich einen, mit ihrer Kunst gefüllten, warmen, farbenfrohen und absolut einzigartige Kosmos geschaffen haben, wird auf den folgenden Seiten thematisiert.

EN On 7 April 2024, the first joint exhibition by Edith Burggraff and François Valentiny will take place at the Valentiny Foundation in Remerschen.

While François Valentiny is better known for his architectural work, he has been drawing, painting and sculpting continuously since his early youth. The same goes for Edith Burggraff, who has been working as a freelance artist specialising in painting and wood sculpture in Luxembourg and abroad since the 1980s.

After studying in Vienna, the two married in 1980. I was born in 1991 and am responsible for this catalogue, which provides an insight into the lives and works of the two artists. Trips to Brazil, China, Austria, their second home in Vienna and Salzburg, where they have been attending the Summer Festival together for decades, play an important role in the development of their painting, with the places influencing the colours and motifs of their works.

The reader discovers an organic approach that, paired with selected biographical details of the two, traces the development of their work over the years. The structure of the publication resembles an intuitive journey through the world that the two have built up and developed over the course of their life together.

Including Edith and François‘ home in Remerschen, where they have created a warm, colourful and absolutely unique universe filled with their art.

1991 waren François Valentiny und Hubert Hermann Luxemburgs erste Vertreter bei der Architekturbiennale in Venedig (IT). Eine Vielzahl der damals ausgestellten Skulpturen standen danach in Ediths und François Zuhause im Wisswee, bis sie 2016 in die neu gegründete Valentiny Foundation umzogen.

In 1991, François Valentiny and Hubert Hermann were Luxembourg‘s first representatives at the Architecture Biennale in Venice (IT). A large number of the sculptures exhibited at that time were subsequently displayed in Edith‘s and François‘ home in Wisswee until they moved to the newly founded Valentiny Foundation in 2016.

1990 stellte Edith anlässlich der traditionellen „Wellenschter Kiermes“ im gleichnamigen Winzerdorf aus. Dass sie mit der gemeinsamen Tochter Anna schwanger war, sollte sie kurz danach erfahren. Die Zeitungen schrieben: „Am vergangenen Samstag Nachmittag wurden die Kirmesfeierlichkeiten in Wellenstein mit einer sehr interessanten Ausstellung mit Bildern von Edith Burggraff eröffnet (...). Auf den 62 Bildern und Grafiken der jungen Künstlerin steht der Mensch immer im Mittelpunkt.„

In 1990, Edith exhibited at the traditional „Wellenschter Kiermes“ in the winegrowing village. She found out shortly afterwards that she was pregnant with their daughter Anna. The newspapers wrote: „Last Saturday at noon, the fair celebrations in Wellenstein were opened with a very interesting exhibition of paintings by Edith Burggraff. (...) People are always at the centre of the 62 paintings and graphics by the young artist.„

Bevor Edith 1976 zur Fachausbildung zur Grafikgestalterin nach Wien ging, besuchte sie die Section des Beaux Arts am Luxemburger Arts et Métier. Seit 1980 lebt und arbeitet sie als freischaffende Künstlerin in Remerschen und Wien. Die frühen Arbeiten charakterisieren sich durch einen extrem aufwändigen Duktus, der in seiner Klarheit und Feinheit fast impressonistische Züge hat, während sie Themen wie Familie, Geborgenheit, Freiheit und Glück thematisiert.

Before Edith went to Vienna in 1976 to train as a graphic designer, she attended the Section des Beaux Arts at Luxembourg‘s Arts et Métier. Since 1980 she has lived and worked as a freelance artist in Remerschen and Vienna. Her early works are characterised by an extremely elaborate ductus, which in its clarity and delicacy has firmly impressionistic traits, while she adresses themes such as family, security, freedom and happiness.

François ist einer von zwei Söhnen des Zimmermanns Prospert Valentiny und dessen Frau Jeanny Harter. Er wurde im Alter von zwölf Jahren von den Eltern in ein Internat nach Belgien geschickt, wo er 1970 eine Schreinerlehre am Athénée Royal de Virton abschloss. Diese Skulptur ist die erste in seinem Werk. Sie wurde für die Aufnahme an der Hochschule für Angewandte Kunst in Wien 1975 gefertigt. 2023 wurde sie in Bronze gegossen und ist seither in der Valentiny Foundation ausgestellt, während das Original auf dem Kamin seines Hauses verbleibt.

François is one of two sons of the carpenter Prospert Valentiny and his wife Jeanny Harter. His parents sent him to boarding school in Belgium at the age of twelve, where he completed a carpentry apprenticeship at the Athénée Royal de Virton in 1970. This sculpture is the first in his oeuvre. It was made for admission to the University of Applied Arts Vienna in 1975. It was cast in bronze in 2023 and has been on display at the Valentiny Foundation ever since, while the original remains on the fireplace of his house.

Ediths erste gebrannte Tonskulptur, gefertigt während ihres Besuches der Section des Beaux Arts am Luxemburger Arts et Métiers, abfotografiert 2024 im Innenhof ihres Zuhauses. Das Mosaik auf denen die Figur sitzt, wurden zu Beginn der 90er Jahre von François direkt in den flüssigen Zement gelegt. Verlegt wurden neben Bruchstücken farbiger Fliesen zahlreiche runde Weinflaschenböden, die hier von der Figure verdeckt werden. Oben rechts eine Lehmskulptur aus den 2020er Jahren, mit Akryl bemalt.

ATELIER HERMANN & VALENTINY ERSTE BAUPHASE / FIRST BUILDING PHASE : 1984–1985

Nach dem Studium in Nancy und an der Universität für Angewandte Kunst in Wien in der Meisterklasse von Wilhelm Holzbauer gründet François Valentiny 1980 gemeinsam mit seinem Studienfreund Hubert Hermann das Architekturbüro Hermann & Valentiny.

After studying in Nancy and at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna in Wilhelm Holzbauer‘s masterclass, François Valentiny founded the architecture office Hermann & Valentiny together with his friend Hubert Hermann in 1980.

Bevor das Büro 1996 umgebaut wurde, nutze François eine Garage in der , an den Wisswee angrenzenden „Greffchesgässel“ als Atelier zur Arbeit an seinen Skulpturen.

2010 realisierte François den Luxemburgischen Pavillon für die Weltausstellung in Shanghai. In den Jahren davor war die Familie zu zahlreichen Besuchen in China, wo das Büro Valentiny hvp Architects die Baustelle verfolgte und die Familie das Land kennen lernte.

Seit 2011 ist François Professor für Community Planning und Green Architectural Design an der DeTao Masters Academy (DTMA) und am Shanghai Institute of Visual Art (CN).

Die Auseinandersetzung mit der Chinesischen Kultur und den traditionellen Maltechniken führte zu einer Weiterentwicklung in François Bildkompositionen. Während sich die Malereien, die zu Beginn von François Karriere als Architekt, Anfang der 80er Jahre entstanden, als städtebauliche Collagen und archetypische Formkompositionen auf einfarbigem Hintergrund lesen lassen, entstehen mit der Zeit landschaftliche Kompositionen, Bergketten, Seen oder das Delta eines Flusses, die die beeindruckende Kulisse für eine architektonisch-skulpturale Inzenierung bilden.

Während François Malereien menschenleer bleiben, sind es in Ediths Werk, wie immer die Figuren, die in Form von Tieren oder maskierten Fabelwesen, zu den Protagonsiten ihres Werks werden. Architektonische Reminiszenzen, wie Säulen, Dächer oder Kuppeln in traditionell chinesischer Manier treten in den Hintergrund und werden von Wasserbüffel, Pferden oder Kranichen überdeckt.

In 2010, François realised the Luxembourg Pavilion for the World Expo in Shanghai. In the years before that, the family made numerous visits to China, where Valentiny hvp Architects followed the construction site and the family got to know the country.

Since 2011, François is Professor of Community Planning and Green Architectural Design at the DeTao Masters Academy (DTMA) and the Shanghai Institute of Visual Art (CN).

His engagement with Chinese culture and traditional painting techniques led to a further development in François‘ pictorial compositions. While the paintings that emerged at the beginning of François‘ career as an architect in the early 1980s could be characterised as urban collages and archetypal formal compositions on monochrome backgrounds, one discovers later complex landscape compositions, mountain ranges, lakes or the delta of a river, forming the impressive scenery for an architectural-sculptural staging.

While François‘ paintings remain devoid of people, in Edith‘s work it is, as always, the figures, in the form of animals or masked mythical creatures, that become the protagonists of her work. Architectural reminiscences such as columns, roofs or domes in the traditional Chinese style recede into the background and are covered by water buffaloes, horses and cranes.

Edith und François während der Festspiel Saison in Salzburg. 2006 wurde das von Valentiny hvp Architects, in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Büro Wilhelm Holzbauers umgebaute, Kleine Festspielhaus, oder auch „Haus für Mozart“ eröffnet. Seit ihrem Studium in Wien pflegen die beiden enge Beziehungen zu Österreich und verbringen ihre Sommer in Salzburg, wo sie Freunde, Konzerte, Opern und die Seen des Salzkammerguts besuchen.

Während die Basilien Malereien auf Leinwand nach den jeweiligen Reisen in Ediths Atelier in Remerschen gefertigt wurden, enstehen die Tuschezeichnungen im Zuge der jeweiligen Reisen und unmittelbar nach dem Erlebten in der Wiener Wohnung der Familie in der Zollergasse.

Edith and François during the festival season in Salzburg. In 2006, the „Kleines Festspielhaus“, also known as „Haus für Mozart“, was built by Valentiny hvp Architects in collaboration with Wilhelm Holzbauer‘s office. Since their studies in Vienna, the two have maintained close ties to Austria and spend their summers in Salzburg, where they visit friends, concerts, operas and the lakes of the Salzkammergut.

While the Brazil paintings on canvas were produced after each trip, in Edith‘s studio in Remerschen the ink drawings were created in the course of the respective journeys and immediately after the experiences in the family‘s Viennese flat on Zollergasse.

In dieser, neusten Arbeit von Edith Bruggraff, verbindet die Künstlerin erstmals ihre künstlerischen Ausdrucksformen der Malerei und der Skulptur. Es ensteht eine Mischtechnik, in der Linolschnitte in einer freien Collage in Akrylfarbe auf Holzrahmen gedruckt werden. In der anschließenden freien Colorierung und der skulpturalen Nachbearbeitung des Trägermaterials Holz ensteht ein Hybrid, das in seinem Relief wieder ein neues Motiv ergibt.

In this latest work by Edith Bruggraff, the artist combines her artistic forms of expression of painting and sculpture for the first time. The result is a mixed technique in which linocuts are printed in a free collage in acrylic colour on wooden frames. In the subsequent free colouring and sculptural reworking of the wooden support material, a hybrid is created, which in its relief again results in a new motif.
