Twenty-one years ago, Marine Corps veteran Shakuur and New York City school aide Inaya met, got married, and started a family. Throughout the years, they embarked on various business ventures and changed careers multiple times, but they always felt that they were brought together to create something greater for the world. Ten years into their marriage, they began to dream of opening a business that would provide customers with products that genuinely benefited the community. They later migrated to the Poconos. With Shakuur’s 25 years of experience as a powerlifter and personal trainer, and Inaya’s work as a medical assistant, health consciousness became a shared value for them. After fifteen years of pursuit, Taqwa Culture was finally established!
A Tree, a Chef, a Dishwasher and the Rest is
The “Willow Tree” was planted in 1955 after the historic flood washed away a maple. The expected life is 35 years, with much loving care and preservation this one lived till 70! The tree showed its appreciation in the end falling into the creek instead of on the restaurant. The caretakers, Kat and Goerge met in the kitchen, he the #1 graduate of the prestigious Culinary Institute and an ordained minister, she a dishwasher… kismet! Kat quickly moved up the company ladder and they both have been great stewards of the restaurant and the tree for 40 years! - and the rest, as they say, is history.
WHERE: You’ll want to contact a boat livery (rental) business. They will coordinate transportation to and from access and take out points. See Below.

COST: $38 to $46 per person. Children may be less if they are additional passengers.
WHAT YOU NEED: The liveries will supply the canoe, kayak, raft, tube, paddles and life jackets. You need to bring clothing and swimwear dependent on time of year and weather. Food and water depending on length of trip. Water tight bags, towels, change of clothes, suntan lotion, camera, binoculars, water guns, water goggles, fishing gear.
GOOD TO KNOW: The Delaware is usually very clear. Bring water goggles or mask and even a snorkel – there’s lots to see underwater!
If you like to fish, the Delaware is renowned for catching the best fighting fresh water fish; the small mouth bass. We suggest a “weedless” brown/green rubber worm.
The Pocono Mountains have some of the most beautiful s in the Eastern United States. Pennsylvania’s two highest waterfalls are right here in the Pocono’s; Raymondskill Falls and Dingmans Falls.

A spectacular waterfall tumbles over the rocks right next to the road. Long ago, Buttermilk Falls Road was a secluded country lane without much traffic. Check out the impressive stone footbridge. next to the falls.

In its 3.0 mile loop this trail has it all – an overlook of the Delaware River Valley, Tumbling Waters waterfall, remnants of farms, hemlock forest, mixed forest, a pine plantation, and two ponds. Over nine miles of trail can be connected together in the PEEC area.

Dingmans Falls is the second highest falls in the state, with a plunge of 130 feet. In heavy spring runoff, there is no way to get to the end of the boardwalk without getting drenched by spray. The boardwalk trail passes by a thin horsetail cascade called Silverthread Falls.

Waterfall is 1.4 miles from trailhead. Enjoy a hike over rolling hills and through hemlock and mixed hardwood forests as you make your way to Hackers Falls. This waterfall has a fan shape as it slides across a steep, but short, drop.

Raymondskill is the tallest waterfall in PA. If you add the steps together, it is only a few feet shorter than Niagara Falls. A five minute walk from the parking lot will lead you to the falls. The lower trail is about a half-mile long (one way), and will bring you down by switchbacks to the Raymondskill Creek.

The original "Log Cabin" was constructed in 1934 from native spruce, harvested entirely from the surrounding woods. Known for many years as The Log Cabin, this rustic mountain lodge was a boarding house for hunters and other outdoorsmen. Hearty PA Dutch Style meals were served.
In 1979, the log cabin was sold to Ed Murphy and Bill Lauff renamed "Murphy's Loft", a play on the two surnames. Murphy’s Loft opened September 7, 1979. In 1995, a major renovation was completed, which added a glass dining room, outdoor bar and deck, and a swimming pool to the existing structure.
After 40 years, Murphy’s Loft and the Fern Ridge Motel are still owned and operated by the Lauff family. We embrace tradition, community and family here at the Loft and we try to reflect those ideals in every aspect of our operation. For 28 years in business servicing the tri-state area Angel has been cooking up great meals for breakfast and lunch in her historic building on Main Street in downtown Stroudsburg. “It’s
all about the sauce,” proclaims Bruce Brandli owner of the Big A Grillhouse and Tavern. That special marinara sauce has been the foundation of Bruce’s four decades of success in the restaurant business.
At the young age of 21 Bruce was newly married and unemployed, but he had a dream to own his own restaurant. Unfortunately he had little savings and needed to find someone to invest in his dream. Bruce’s Italian grandfather came through with a loan and a lot more - he brought that special marinara sauce and his cooking expertise.
That was how it all began. Seven successful restaurants and forty three years later Bruce is still cooking the same recipes he learned from his grandfather and still making that same marinara sauce. “The recipe for the sauce has remained a secret known only to myself and my wife,” confided Bruce. Fortunately Bruce & Marianne have been happily married for those 40 plus years!
Bruce started his restaurant business in North Bergen NJ. After vacationing in the Poconos for many years he moved his family here permanently in 1986. Bruce opened Brandli’s in the Foxmoor
Village, Marshalls Creek in 1988. In 2008 Bruce decided to close Brandli’s and purchase the Big A. The Big A had been a restaurant under different names since the early 1900s. In 1950 it was purchased by Bill Altier who named it after himself and put a giant A on the top of the restaurant and so it came to be known as the “Big A”.
The Big A was famously known as a great steakhouse to which Bruce added his incredible Italian menu. You can still order those famous hand-cut fire grilled steaks or choose from a delectable array of Italian and American entrees. In addition to the regular menu the Big A serves Chef Specials Daily.

Fourteen years ago in New York City Teresa went to an auto dealership to buy a car. The owner loved her personality and energy so much he offered her a job! “I don’t know anything about selling cars”, Teresa exclaimed. Guess what the owner said – “Just be you… that’s all you have to do.” For twelve years Teresa was the incredibly successful sales manager of that auto dealership.
Two years ago Teresa and her husband, Jose, purchased a home here in the Poconos. On her way to her new home she saw a vacant restaurant and thought “What a cozy homey special place… I’m going to open a restaurant there.” Her family and friends argued “You don’t know anything about running a restaurant.” Where have we heard that before?!
It seems selling cars and running a restaurant have a lot in common for Teresa – they’re both huge success stories! As she did at the auto dealership, Teresa brought her infectious personality and spirited energy to her new endeavor...Just Be You. It all began back in the early 1950’s when John Jacobi’s parents took the family on a cross country car trip. That’s when the “Adventure and Travel” bug took hold! Fast forward to the mid 1960’s and John “Jake” Jacobi, owner of ADVENTURE SPORTS, was working at the Stroudsburg YMCA as Athletic and Program Director, as well as the SCUBA diving instructor. By this time John already had many travel adventures, he even hitch-hiked across the United States four times - covering all of the 48 contiguous states before he had graduated from what was then East Stroudsburg State College. Being an avid SCUBA diver, one of his biggest dreams was to do some extensive diving on the beautiful coral reefs of the Caribbean. However, on the meager salary he was making at the “Y”, it just didn’t fit into his budget. Then, by chance, he read of a beautiful 84 foot sailing vessel that specialized in sailing and SCUBA adventures in the Bahama Islands, and could accommodate a total of 16 guests on week-long diving trips. John contacted the boat’s owner and struck up a deal in which John could go for free - acting as dive master - if he organized a group of 15 people. Having taught so many divers, it wasn’t hard to locate people interested in signing up for the sailing/ diving adventure. In fact, it became so popular, that John found himself running several of these trips each year for many years. Realizing that this could also work on other ADVENTURE type trips - and be more than just a hobby - John started running trips to the various Western National Parks for activities including hiking, climbing, rafting, canoeing, horseback riding, caving, etc. He took a gamble and bought a 15 passenger van, along with a canoe trailer and 7 canoes, as well as tents and camping equipment for his guests, and Adventure Sports was born in 1969. The trips expanded to include Adirondack, Canadian, and Maine Canoe trips as well.
By this time, John had left the YMCA to become a Physical Education teacher in the East Stroudsburg School District. This gave him the entire summer, as well as the holiday periods, to spend running the various trips. Finally, the last place John decided to run trips was in his own back yard, - The beautiful Delaware River. He ran two and three day canoe trips that were completely outfitted, guided, and provisioned. Because of the close proximity to New York and Philadelphia, he found that many people who lived in the city wanted to have a real outdoor adventure that wasn’t far from home. The Delaware River part of the business grew and grew to the point that there was no time for the other ADVENTURE trips.
Eventually, John left his teaching position and devoted full time to his business, which today also includes a ski and snowboard shop, as well as running Delaware River Trips. Over the years many of John's children worked at Adventure Sports and now his grandchildren are starting to help out. According to John, the best part of his business has been seeing the look on people’s faces when they see some spectacular scenery, or experience an exciting activity, for the first time. “Even though the business started out with trips to beautiful and exotic places like the Bahamas, and Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, the Delaware River is right up there with them as far as I’m concerned”, John stated. AND, it’s in our own back yard! At this point in his life John is doing what he loves best, traveling the world and visiting places most of us have never heard off.
So if you stop by and feel like hearing some fascinating stories, maybe you’ll be lucky and John will be back home from one of his many Adventures!
In choosing your trip, remember it is how much fun you have, not how far you go, that counts.
River conditions can change throughout the season and we would be happy to suggest a trip based on your ability, time constraints, and current conditions. All trips run through the Delaware Water Gap National Park, and are equally beautiful.
Our Shortest trip can be completed in two hours in a canoe without any stops. We don’t suggest rafts for the longer trips. RAFTS TAKE LONGER! Most people choose to swim, picnic, play, etc., and make their trip into a full day outing.
We don’t have specific trip departure times but, depending on the season (day-light hours), we do have cut-off times for the latest we can put you on the river. Ask us!
Kelly, Jason & Son Drake Co-Owners
This family business story began at the University of Tampa where Jason and Kelly first met. These two artistic friendly free spirits were a perfect match for each other. In Florida they fell in love but also fell into a large student loan debt. In need of money the couple returned to the Poconos to open a ceramic painting art studio.
It was the ideal career for this affable artistic duo who would really find their passion in helping adults and children of all ages create beautiful and unique artwork.
Over the years the “business” expanded adding mosaics, glass fusion, clay hand building, and canvas painting. The “family” was also looking to expand and for eight long years they tried and tried, then finally Drake was born!
Drake is now fourteen and has been working his way up the corporate ladder at Poke-ANose Pottery. He now runs the Customer Service Department, so stop by and “poke your nose” in and say hello. Better yet stay a while and let this whole family show you how easy and fun it is to “discover your inner artist”!

Kamil & Klaudia grew up together working in their family’s Polish deli businesses. They both knew someday they would leave their family’s home and start their own business. What’s unique about their story is they did it together. Not only do they share a business they also share a home - that’s commitment to the partnership! It’s working great for them and the Poconos. Klaudia is, as they say, the “front man” and Kamil is more “behind the scenes”. They both bring a lifetime of family expertise and a joyful friendly spirit to Biedronka. You will feel that every time you walk in when you hear “Dzień Dobry!” That’s a warm Polish greeting “Hello & Welcome!” It’s great, and in this case delicious, having a little bit of Poland in the Poconos! Jean Yetter Owner
You could say after that first yard sale Jean was hooked! She started going to other yard sales and close-outs and then she discovered the trade shows. She has become an expert at negotiating incredible deals at these shows for new merchandise which she then passes on to her customers.
One thing’s for sure, Jean Yetter is a survivor. The same way her ancestors who settled this area back in the 1700’s had to survive the many hardships of those times, Jean has had to endure several business and personal tragedies.
All the items that surround Jean Yetter owner of the Year Round “Yard Sale” are new! In fact almost 80% of the items that fill up the sprawling 10 room 6,000 sq ft complex are new. Don’t worry, if you prefer the pre-owned yard sale items there are several large rooms filled to capacity. “It’s a great mix of new and used items” explains Jean. There are thousands of items from jewelry, home décor, women’s accessories, collectables to incense and knives, just to name a few. You can spend hours discovering and marveling at the unique, exotic, unusual and nostalgic items Jean has collected and purchased over 40 years.
Jean’s business started simply enough in 1987 when she held her own yard sale inside one of the rooms of the building her father once used to sell farm equipment. “I really enjoyed the experience,” confided Jean. “I loved meeting and conversing with all the people who stopped by for the sale.”
There was a fire that destroyed a building and a lot of it's contents. Jean rebuilt, restocked and reopened. Then an oil furnace exploded and destroyed a lot of the merchandise again! Jean restocked and reopened once again. As if that was not enough hardship Jean survived a near fatal motorcycle accident where she lost a leg and could not walk for over 6 months. How did she endure and triumph over such incredible adversity?
Jean answers simply, “I love this business and the people who visit my store!”

Diana’s long journey to the Poconos started in Taiwan where she was born and raised. She earned her M.B.A in GA and had a very successful career in Radio broadcasting and in technology companies for more than 15 years. Professionally Diana was flourishing but like most of the white - collar workers, physically she was deteriorating and spiritually not fulfilled so she quit her job and changed her life style.
