Epic Growth in Trades Fuels Need for Diversity & Skilled Workers THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR is just around the bend, and that signals opportunity for many of you looking for temporary work or full-time careers that might land you in the trades.

“The Trades” is a term that refers to many jobs within the construction and building industry. Within it, opportunities abound including paid, on-thejob training, summer internships, and a foothold into high-paying jobs that offer growth and support from every angle.

Right now, it’s an especially good time for women to consider joining the industry. Women make up only 9 percent of the job market, but I can guarantee you that there is 100% interest in training and hiring more women.

We want young women to understand that real, sustainable, good paying, and benefits-rich jobs exist, and that there are hundreds of opportunities throughout a company, on or off a jobsite.

The Oregon Building Congress, which has been around for more than 90 years, continues its work to ensure that all students are informed about the training and employment options available in conOBC promotes skill-based struction. At numerous high schools across the state, learning in the classroom OBC is promoting skillsthat creates based learning in the classroom and helping students pathways for students establish networks to learn more about industry, meet potential employers, and socialize.

Our partnership with high schools helps recruit students into Career Technical Education (CTE) programs and provides clearly defined pathways for students to enter into the trades.

Career readiness is a vital component of gaining entry to the trades. Use this magazine to learn about the opportunities out there, such as CTE programs, apprenticeships, internships and summer programs, among others.

Roofing Chapter Embraces Women and Gives Back NATIONAL WOMEN IN ROOFING (NWIR) is a volunteer organization that supports and advances the careers of women roofing professionals, offering networking, mentoring, education and recruitment opportunities.

The Oregon chapter was established in 2017 and is focused on connecting and empowering women to drive the betterment and professionalism of the industry. Men who support the inclusion of women in the roofing industry also are welcome.

Additionally, one of the core missions of the local chapter is giving back to our communities, said Devri Pieratt, who serves as Vice Chair alongside Stephanie Baird from Bliss Roofing.

Local projects have included collecting toys for families in need over the holidays and the Habitat for Humanity Women’s Build in December.

JINNIE FREEMAN, who will be joining the OT Board of Directors this year, is completing the second year of a five-year apprenticeship program in sheet metal fabrication offered through a local union. After bouncing around from job to job, including as an interpreter, classroom aide, and welder, Freeman finally found her perfect career match and is excited about the prospects for steady work, with great pay and benefits.

hether a Super Mario Brother or Wreck it Ralph is your favorite video game protagonist, almost every high school student or young adult has a favorite hero from a game played on a mobile phone or similar device.

In these games, as in life, standing still does not get you points, nor does it advance the game. As in life, there are levels to conquer, obstacles to clear, constant distractions, and unexpected fails.

If you keep at it, though, eventually you’ll learn these games level by level to earn the bricks, or coins—or skills—needed to master the game.

In the trades, you might choose to game up by mastering the required levels to become an Operating Engineer, a position that is in consistent demand on each and every project that uses construction equipment.

and/or moves and places objects.

Stationary Engineers, trade counterparts to OE, operate mechanical and boiler systems in workplaces and large-scale facilities such as schools, hospitals, hotels, power and industrial plants, and others.

Apprenticeship is the road to journeyman status for both positions, training with 80% of the eventual fulltime hourly rate to start, and advancing through skills with raises for each level mastered until the program is successfully completed.

“Every apprentice has taken a unique path to our program. Some applied a couple of times before being accepted, others got in the first try,” said Deanna Robles, Dispatcher/ Construction Training Coordinator for IUOE Local 701.

701 seven years ago, with jobs in the cable industry and also working for the Clackamas County road department. Having successfully completed the program, every day now is a new day to play the game.

“When I was a kid I played with Tonka™ trucks and video games. Now as an adult, I play with full-sized Tonka™ trucks and operator equipment with joysticks just like video games. I found a career that doesn’t feel like work, just fun,” she said.

Stories from across the field echo similar satisfaction with the trade.

Roger Bullock, a heavy equipment operator and proud member of the IUOE 701, said it best in an online post recently: “Been a member for going on 21 years… the best decision I ever made. It’s allowed me to take very good care of my family and live [a] very comfortable [life].”

CONNECTING UNION TRAINING WITH EMPLOYMENT

Lift and Move Event Was a Blast LAST OCTOBER, students, teachers, and career specialists from schools across Oregon were afforded a front row seat, so to speak, to witness heavy machinery in action. Attendees also were able to explore learning stations showcasing safety, engineering, rigging, crane, and transport operations.

The Lift and Move USA event in Portland was hosted by NessCampbell Crane + Rigging and brought the action front and center, along with information about what it takes to become a heavy equipment operator. The daylong event featured insight into technical training opportunities and job possibilities—explaining the critical needs in the field—along with machine, virtual reality, and rigging demonstrations by Morrow Equipment, Lifting Gear Hire, and Industrial Training International. One demo included the lifting of an Oshkosh truck and placing it on a trailer!

T

he idea of developing a Renovations and Remodeling course at St. Helens High, where I have been an instructor for 9 years, started after I hired my first student to work on a job with me after school. I hired him because he had a good attitude and I already knew what he had been taught. I was pretty proud of my plan—until we got to the job site.

It turns out that classroom learning—the books and tests type of learning—does not necessarily translate to on-site know-how. For the whole summer, I ended up teaching my newly-graduated building construction student everything I wish he would have already known.

Needless to say, I came back the next school year feeling disheartened. Even though I was teaching a construction program that awarded dual credit from the local community college (and had received national recognition for the tiny houses we were building), I knew the skills my students were leaving the program

with were not enough to get them through a remodeling project. After some thought and market research, a new possibility emerged for how to better prepare our students through a Renovations and Remodeling job training course — we just needed a way to pay for it.

I had heard about the Oregon Revitalization Grants initiative that funds programs to help jumpstart students’ career education. And, after some scary moments that grant writers are all too familiar with, our application was completed and submitted (five minutes before deadline!) and we were awarded the grant. That was three years ago.

Today, I am still working with my junior and senior classes remodeling and flipping homes. And, while there are many moving parts that make it all work, here are key highlights and helpful suggestions that I have learned over time:

RECRUIT EARLY

We created a middle school program that brings eighth graders to the high school twice a month to work on specific class projects. This allows students to be inspired earlier in the learning process, builds excitement, and creates a pipeline of engaged students before they even reach high school.

SHOW THE STEPS Throughout the entire R&R process, students are involved and engaged: they categorize houses, attend viewings and home inspections, estimate costs, calculate Return On Investment, assist in the purchasing process of the structure and materials for remodeling, re-design floor plans if necessary, draft design plans, stage materials, initiate asbestos and LBP remediation when needed, and then complete all the labor required to finish a house before putting it back on the market.

PUT IN THE WORK With remodeling, there are a lot of surprise variables, from dead animals in crawl spaces to hidden rot in walls to impossible code requirements, physical space limitations and more, all of which need to be figured out. This is what I consider the “beautiful part” of what is learned: the problem solving that is required to complete the project or the task at hand.

After two years of general woodworking and construction education, third-year students work as apprentices under the fourth-year students at the job site in R&R. This approach develops leadership and management skills in the older students, while the younger ones learn about respect for knowledge and experience.

GAIN LIFETIME INSIGHT In addition to these problem solving skills, our program provides industry-specific tools (valued at around $500) at the end of each year successfully completed, and a free ride into a carpentry or electrical apprenticeship (as long as they pass the math requirements). In addition to high school credits, students are also able to earn up to 15 dual credits at our local community college.

Unlike following a textbook learning scenario, these real-time, hands on projects require students to think about why they are doing what they are doing and how to do it correctly.

I believe – I know – this gives our students a competitive edge: they finish our program with the skills needed to negotiate, sometimes compromise and, ultimately, solve complex problems. These skills will translate again and again across career and consumer choices, relationships at home and work, and more.

Summer Camp Gives Girls the Tools to Succeed

Girls Build, a local nonprofit dedicated to inspiring curiosity and confidence through the world of building, is ramping up for another busy, buzzing summer, with registration already underway.

Last summer, the group ran seven weeks of camp in four locations serving around 350 girls (ages 8 14), who were schooled in over 10 trades through 20 hands-on, and hat’s-on, workshops per week.

Participants received breakfast and lunch each day, and many were able to attend on scholarships due to generous donations from community partners and individual donors.

Aviation Experiences Help Students Reach New Heights

A

irway Science for Kids Inc. uses aviation as a way to teach STEM. Fledgling aviators think they are just having fun: making and flying drones, being a pilot of a high-tech flight simulator, building a real airplane, and even flying in the airplane they built. However, these young people are really learning the fundamentals of physics, math, and engineering. An example of a very important math problem involves aircraft fuel. Every airplane that takes off has to balance two competing interests: a) carry the least possible weight of fuel needed so that it can carry a big payload; while b) making sure there is enough fuel to get to the destination. A wrong calculation could have really bad consequences! The math gets complicated when the student takes into account that there might be headwinds, crosswinds, or tailwinds. Or predicted weather may force a longer flight in order to get around a predicted thunderstorm. The students also learn real world lessons in how to plan a safe flight, and how to be “captain in command” of their own destiny. The underlying goal of the Airway Science for Kids programs, which cover elementary through high school ages, it to help students emerge feeling confident and in control of their lives: as one student said “If I can fly an airplane, I can do anything!” n Aron Faegre, Vice President, Airway Science for Kids, Inc.

Family-Run Business Supports Women ABC ROOFING has been topping industrial and commercial structures across Oregon, Arizona, and Washington for longer than most of us—and our parents—have been alive.

Testament to their longevity (almost seven decades) is their commitment to excellence, and the men (and women) they followed up the ladder in this business. Today, the company is run by the family of Oregon roofing legend Roy Bolt, who trained hundreds of the apprentices over the years who now are leading roofing con-

struction efforts across the state.

Inclusivity is another mark of their commitment to excellence, and in June of 2018, ABC Roofing hired Devri Pieratt, the second woman on their management team, as Project Administrator.

Pieratt entered the roofing industry in 1996 as a receptionist for a commercial roofing contractor while still in high school. After earning her two-year degree, she transferred to Portland State to further her education, and simultaneously launched the first

Sporting custom carpenter overalls, with nails at the ready, Bolt lumbered up thousands of structures in his lifetime to help hammer down roof shingles and bring young men up through the trade.

He loved his Roy Bolt work, and rarely missed a chance to share his experience with others in the field.

Bolt also gave back to numerous charitable organizations. He was a founding member of the Western State Roofing Contactors Association and the Associated Roofing Contractors of Oregon and SW Washington.

Joel Gonzalez, Director of the Oregon & SW Washington Roofers and Waterproofers Apprenticeship & Training Center, fondly remembers meeting Bolt 20 years ago when he joined the apprenticeship program.

“He gave so much to the roofing industry; he had a passion for it,” he said, adding, “We hope to continue his love for the trade as we continue training the roofing professionals of tomorrow.”

Bolt, now 95, spends his time differently these days, having retired after more than 60 years on the job. Stories of his legend are helping inspire the young men and women entering the field.

marketing department at that company.

During her time there, the firm grew from one location to five, sales and services increased, and more workers were hired.

“My career in this industry has afforded me so many opportunities,” she said, including medical and dental coverage for her two daughters and being able to take short-term disability and family leave for both pregnancies.

Twenty-some years later, Pieratt’s experience—and commitment to helping other women in the industry: she was instrumental in establishing the Oregon Chapter of National Women in Roofing in 2017—led to her joining the team at ABC.

Pieratt also has been able to travel to conventions and conferences in the U.S. and abroad and, often, has been able to take family with her, lessening the burden of traveling for work.

She credits support in the industry with helping her weather one of her

biggest challenges: “I am a breast cancer survivor and the amount of support I have received from this (male-dominated) industry has been overwhelming.

“At both roofing companies I have worked for, I have given presentations on breast cancer awareness that were very well received. There is nothing like seeing a group of (mostly male) roofers in pink work shirts supporting a team member,” she said.

Pieratt is gearing up for another battle: recently, she was diagnosed with breast cancer for a second time.

“I know my team will continue to hold me up as I enter my second round of treatment. And because I work for a union contractor, I am blessed with some of the best medical care around.

Cutting Edge, High Tech Careers in the Trades

mbark on a career on the cutting edge of the electrical industry! As a limited energy technician, you will be part of an ever-evolving, innovative trade. Limited energy technicians work on electrical systems under 100 volts. There are two types of limited energy licenses: Class A and Class B. Both licenses allow technicians to work on telecommunications, specialized controls, and audio-visual systems, but Class A technicians can also work on life safety systems such as fire alarm, burglar alarm, and CCTV security systems.

The Area 1 Limited Energy Apprenticeship Program, operated by the Independent Electrical Contractors (IEC) of Oregon, offers pathways for both licenses. This program is a combination of hands-on classroom instruction at Clackamas Community College in Wilsonville and work experience with approved employersâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;apprentices get paid to learn! Each employer has different requirements, but access to transportation, a good driving record, and the ability to pass a drug/background check are all common hiring criteria.

Regardless of experience, entry-level apprentices earn $14.15-$15.25 per hour

with pay increases as they progress through the program. Once licensed, limited energy technicians earn between $28.30-$30.50 per hour, or approximately $58,000-$63,000 per year, on average.

The Limited Energy Apprenticeship Program accepts applications about every other month. Applicants must be 18 years old, have a diploma or GED, and have completed a year of high school algebra or equivalent to qualify. Applications are evaluated based on a combination of educational background, work experience, and a scored interview.

Individuals who participate in the Limited Energy Apprenticeship Program will receive the skills to become a lead person or supervisor in their trade, credit toward an Associateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degree, and the development of marketable skills.
