he theme of this year’s celebration—Older Americans: Connecting the Community—pays homage to the many ways in which older adults bring inspiration and continuity to the fabric of our communities. Their shared histories, diverse experiences, and wealth of knowledge have made our culture, economy, and local character what they are today. Older Americans help one another by delivering meals, helping with home repair, assisting with shopping, and offering companionship, counseling, and care. Their efforts remind us that when older adults are active and engaged in their communities, everyone benefits. The theme also highlights the many ways technology is helping older Americans live longer, healthier and more engaged lives. Technology troubling you? The

The Five Wishes program

W

hat would your wish be if something were to happen to you? Hospice of the Northwest and HomePlace are sponsoring a presentation on Aging with Dignity’s “5 Wishes” Program at the Oak Harbor Senior Center, Tuesday, May 24 from 1:00 – 3:00 am. The Five Wishes program is an easy to use living will that talks about your personal, emotional and spiritual needs as well as your medical wishes. The Five Wishes can help you and your family by: • It assists you in talking with your family, friends and doctor about how you want to be treated if you become seriously ill. • It protects your family from having to make hard choices without knowing your wishes should you become seriously ill. • It enables you to know and understand the wishes of you family and friends, so that you can be there for them when they need you most. This is a simplified version for Advance Directives, which addresses personal end of life wishes. Jill Boudreau, Community Liaison for Hospice will present the program and provide the booklets and handouts. Wendy Sines, Community Relations Director of HomePlace will provide folders, pens, nametags and light refreshments. The program is free. RSVP by calling the Center at 2794580. Seating is limited to 20 people.
