Sailors from the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis are scheduled to return to Naval Base Kitsap in Bremerton today and end a seven-month deployment to the Middle East.

Early African American Marine speaks about experiences BANGOR (NNS) – Naval Base Kitsap, Bangor sailors and Marines listened as one of the nation’s first AfricanAmerican Marines spoke during a Black History event held at the Bangor Cinema Plus, Feb. 16.

Former Marine Cpl. Clayton Pitre, a “Montford Point Marine” explained how he enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1942, even with the racial inequalities occurring in the country during that time.

“Everyone was going over

and doing their part, and I felt that as soon as I can go out and do my part, the better off I would be,” said Pitre.

Pitre, who grew up in Opelousas, La., was able to enlist due to Executive Order 8802, issued by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on June 25, 1941. This order launched the beginning efforts in erasing racial discrimination in the armed forces.

“It was a very trying experience because of the fact that we were in a segregated

Marine Corps,” said Pitre.

According to the Montford Point Marine Association website, about 20,000 African American recruits trained at Montford Point Camp during World War II, and it was the only boot camp black recruits were authorized to attend until July 1948 when President Harry S. Truman issued Executive Order 9981, ending segregation.

Bangor Marine awarded Purple Heart

Bangor (NNS) – A Marine Staff Sgt. received a Purple Heart during a ceremony held at Bangor Cinema Plus theater on Naval Base Kitsap, Bangor, Feb. 16.

Marine Staff Sgt. Chris Rangel, S3 operations assistant chief, Marine Corps Security Force Battalion Bangor, received a Purple Heart after suffering a traumatic brain injury caused by an improvised explosive device during an airborne operation while deployed to Afghanistan in 2009.

“I was the eleventh vehicle in a patrol whose sole purpose was to find IEDs,” said Rangel. “But with my luck, I found it with my truck. “ Rangel said it was about 60-80 pounds of homemade explosives on a pressure plate that detonated right under his seat.

“It blew out my [communications], so luckily I was coherent enough to pop smoke for our secondary form of communication to let everybody know, hey, we

are good to go.”

The sweep team then patrolled the area, checking for secondary IEDs so the corpsman could safely extract Rangel.

Rangel’s wife, a nurse at Madigan Army Medical Center, expressed the importance of the role as a military spouse.

“I’m finding out all the details of what happened years later,” she said . “He knew I’d probably freak out and worry. [You need to] be strong and supportive and know that there are going to be days they don’t want to talk about it. Try to be understanding and don’t be angry with them if it’s something they don’t want to share with you.”

Rangel said that after three years, it feels good to get the recognition.

“It’s been a long time coming. It’s the eighth IED I have sustained over four different deployments so it feels good to get taken care of.”

Coast Guard calls out Arctic security issues

WASHINGTON - At a recent conference, a Defense Department participant said the Arctic doesn’t represent a security threat for at least the next decade, Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Robert J. Papp Jr. said last week.

“The Coast Guard has ... a much wider aperture,” he added.

Papp told the Pentagon Channel and American Forces Press Service that the Arctic has economic, energy and environmental implications for national security.

Coast Guard missions there are increasing because Shell Oil Co. has permits to drill in Alaska’s Chukchi and Beaufort seas beginning this summer, he said.

Shell will move 33 ships and 500 people to Alaska’s North Slope, and will helicopter some 250 people a week to drilling platforms, the admiral said. That activity has the potential to increase Coast Guard workloads in pollution and environmental response, as well

as in search and rescue, he noted.

The Coast Guard will have to station responders in the North Slope, which it hasn’t done throughout its 150-year presence in Alaska, Papp said. Since 1867, he added, Coast Guard cutters have been based in southern Alaska to protect fisheries and marine mammals, give medical assistance to native populations and rescue whalers. The North Slope is new territory for the Coast Guard, with most of the service’s Alaska infrastructure some 800 miles away.

“We’ll take one of our brand-new national security cutters ... as the Shell fleet proceeds up there to start their activities,” the admiral said. That cutter will serve as a movable operations center, with worldwide communications, a two-helicopter flight deck and three boats that can launch boarding teams, Papp said.

“For the last four years, we’ve actually been deploying forces up there on a temporary basis to experiment with

our equipment [and] see what works up there,” the commandant said. “We will learn lessons ... as drilling starts up there, but right now, I’m pretty confident we’ll be able to cover it.”

Climate trends also indicate new missions for the Coast Guard, as former “hard water” ice zones become “soft water” operation areas.

The admiral said during one of his early assignments near the Bering Sea, some 36 years ago, a particular location was completely iced in. Two years ago, on a visit to the same place, he said, “there was no ice to be seen.”

In Alaska, fish stock and human activity is moving north as ice recedes, Papp said. But the extreme cold still poses equipment and other challenges for Coast Guard operations, as the Coast Guard’s North Slope experiments proved.

And then there’s the fact aviation fuel turns to jelly in extreme cold.

“You don’t want that to happen when you’re flying at 500 feet,” the commandant noted. “We never had heaters for our fuel tanks, because we didn’t need to. So these are little lessons that we

learned ... that will help us to improve our operations.”

Turning to infrastructure, Papp said the Coast Guard has good command-and-control capabilities linking mariners and shore-based stations throughout U.S. coastal areas. The North Slope is an exception, and when it comes to piers for ships, barracks for service members and

hangars for aircraft, Papp added, “there’s none of that infrastructure up there.”

Ships can provide a bridging strategy for North Slope operations, but long-term operations will require investing in shore-based facilities, Papp said.

“I’m going to identify the needs, and I’m going to talk about them,” he added.

Navy gets Facebook timeline overhaul WASHINGTON (NNS) -– The Navy Facebook page launched a new interface Feb. 29, changing the way its “fans” engage and interact on the site.

Along with 40 other big brands from government and industry, the Navy was selected as part of the initial rollout of Facebook’s popular “timeline” that, until now was only available to personal profiles. The move gives select brands early access to the interface that will eventually be mandated for every brand page on Facebook.

“New Facebook pages give government agencies, lawmakers, and political campaigns more engaging ways to tell their stories, and we’re excited to see branches of the U.S. military leading the way.” said Joel Kaplan, vice president, U.S. Public Policy for Facebook.

“We’re eager to see oth-

ers join the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard in embracing new pages to better to connect with citizens, provide information, and deliver services,” Kaplan said.

The Navy entered into a beta product agreement with Facebook in early February for the initial rollout phase of Timeline for brands on the Navy’s

Facebook page.

“These interface changes will allow us to tell a more engaging and authentic story that aligns with our ongoing efforts to share the value of America’s Navy with audiences at home and abroad,” said U.S. Navy Chief of Information, Rear Adm. Denny Moynihan.

Dinner with hockey players Navy Wise Sarah Smiley In a time when professional athletes seemingly make the news more for their disappointments, failed commitments and even criminal activity than they do for their successes, I am happy to report that a couple of college athletes recently proved any negative stereotypes wrong.

Last week our Dinner with the Smileys guests included two Men’s Ice Hockey players from the University of Maine—Kyle Beattie, #21, and Nick Pryor, #71—their coach Tim Whitehead and his son Zach. As my mother-in-law, Robin, was also in town visiting, it was our biggest crowd yet: 5 adults and 4 kids.

My table seats six.

I have a rule, however, which I learned from my mother, that no matter how many guests arrive, we always fit them around the dinner table. There was no balancingpaper-plates-on-knees when I was growing up, so I wasn’t going to start now.

We hauled in a side table from the front porch, pulled the kitchen table away from the wall and shoved the two together. For seating we had the usual 6 wooden chairs that belong to the dinner table, two padded dining-roomtable chairs that belong to my grandmother but are stored in our

basement, plus an old red stool that has been chewed by the dog.

It wasn’t something you’d see on Martha Stewart, but it worked nonetheless.

My boys had been looking forward to the dinner all week.

Dustin—their usual source of all things sports-related—has not been able to participate in that aspect of their lives for three months now.

(Watching the Super Bowl without Dustin was probably harder on Ford than not having his dad there for Christmas.) Although I try to fill the role of both “Mom” and “Dad” in Dustin’s absence, there are some things I just can’t do. (Throwing a football is one of them.)

The boys’ sports-tank was dangerously low. And hockey here in the Northeast is what football is to the south. So for the kids, it was as if we were about to host rockstars.

Nick and Kyle arrived early, before their coach. They sat on

the couch and Lindell, 5, wasted no time wedging himself between them. He was like a tiny board book squished between two enormous bookends. And he peered up at the players as if he was studying them.

After Coach Whitehead and Zach arrived, all the boys and men went into the basement to play ping pong. In the team’s official program, Nick listed ping pong as one of his hobbies. And, well, if it’s in print, Ford is not likely to miss it.

He had read and reread that catalog several times the night before. I smiled to myself upstairs as I heard the players teach my younger, adoring boys the best way to hold a ping pong paddle—something Dustin would have showed them.

At dinner, Nick and Kyle removed their baseball caps. I glanced at Ford and Owen to make sure they were watching. They were. Asking my boys to take off their hats at the dinner table should be less difficult in the future.

We had lasagna, strawberry salad, homemade bread and green salad. With two college athletes at the table, however, even all of that went quickly. I looked at Lindell, who was watching the bigger boys.

I hoped that all those times I’ve said, “Eat your lasagna so you grow big and strong,” were finally sinking in.

The players were polite, respectful and good with the kids.

They used nice table manners, too.

One dinner with them might just equal 100 of my attempts at proving to the boys why all of the above matters.

It’s such a simple thing: come visit with some kids and have dinner. But Nick and Kyle clearly understood the task meant so much more: be a role model.

A few days later, Coach Whitehead invited us to watch a practice and meet the rest of the team. Ford counted down the days.

His face brightened when he saw Nick and Kyle. And when they

gave each of the boys their very own signed hockey stick, I knew it would be one of their newest cherished items, a reminder of two “big kids” who cared about them and think they are special.

For a few short hours, those hockey players filled a spot that my boys have been missing. Dustin and I are grateful.

But besides teaching the boys a thing or two about respect, being a man and playing sports, Dustin also likes to show the boys how to love their mother and women in general. Which is why my favorite line of the night came from Nick.

Lindell had asked him, “Is it scary living at college away from your mom?”

Nick smiled and said, “Yes. Yes, actually it is.”

Iraq Vets share experiences before White House dinner

ARLINGTON, Va. – Like the military branches they represent, the Iraq veterans who gathered near the U.S. Capitol Wednesday are diverse. More than 60 troops and veterans of both sexes and a range of ages, backgrounds and experiences came together at a local hotel as they prepared to receive an honor they have all earned: the nation’s thanks for their service.

As guests of President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama at a White House dinner, they represented the million-plus U.S. troops who served in Iraq and the millions more family members who supported their service.

Called “A Nation’s Gratitude, the event sought to honor the U.S. Troops of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn,” but veterans who spoke to reporters today overwhelmingly expressed their own thanks for the honor.

“It’s kind of surreal, because in my heart, I just feel like little Heather Wunderlich, … a simple, plain girl who’s a wife and mother,” one National Guard sergeant said. “I’m very excited about it.”

Army Sgt. Heather N. Wunderlich, 28, a flight medic with the Nebraska National Guard, said in a

telephone interview earlier this week she’s honored to represent her fellow Guard members, and particularly all the Iraq vets who didn’t return from combat there.

“All of us who are still alive, and came home alive, we owe those men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice the hugest debt of gratitude,” she said. The United States lost 4,409 service members in Iraq, according to Defense Department officials.

Some family members of fallen troops will be at tonight’s dinner, and Wunderlich said she wants them to know “that we know, and we will never forget them.”

Wunderlich deployed as a flight medic from 2006 to 2007 and from 2010 to 2011.

She married her husband of just over one year, Sgt. Jeremie Wunderlich, 34, just before they both deployed in 2010, she added. He will attend tonight’s dinner as her guest.

During the first deployment, she was new to the military and to her job, Wunderlich noted.

“I only got about 30 days’ notice. … I didn’t know anything about being a flight medic, I didn’t know anything about aviation. I didn’t know anybody,” she said.

Her second deployment, with four years of experience and with many friends in her unit, “I felt more comfort-

able, and I knew what an important job we do,” she said.

Wunderlich just completed her bachelor’s degree in nursing. She said her National Guard term of service will be up in a week, and she’s looking forward to civilian work and enjoying life with her family, including her husband’s teenage son and daughter, Riley and Grace.

“Being away from them the past couple years has been pretty difficult,” she said. “It’s time to focus on family now.”

Her time in Iraq, she said, gave her a better picture of the rest of the world and taught her not to take things in her life for granted.

Representing every corner of America from Alabama to the Virgin Islands, troops like Army Staff Sgt. Miguel Cruz, who’s from Puerto Rico but is stationed in Wisconsin, spoke to reporters today about their experiences in Iraq.

Cruz deployed with the 301st Military Police Company from 2004 to 2005, where his unit took over operations at Abu Ghraib immediately after the prisoner-abuse scandal that shook the military and the nation.

He and his fellow soldiers helped to turn around operations at the detention facility during their 14-month deployment, making so many improvements they

Seabee joins White House dinner WASHINGTON (NNS) – A Navy Seabee was invited to a White House dinner hosted by President and Mrs. Obama Feb. 29 to express the nation’s gratitude to, and recognize the significant contributions of, the men and women in uniform who served in Operations Iraqi Freedom and New Dawn, and their families.

Maintenance Unit 202, Detachment Washington D.C., is the only Seabee attending the event. He is among 78 service members invited to the dinner. The 13-year Navy veteran served two tours in Iraq, one with the Multi-National Security Transition Command and one at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad.

VanHorn said he knew something was going on because names were submit-

ted from everyone in his command who had served boots-on-ground in Iraq and the additional information the command was asking for was intriguing.

“I was really expecting everyone who was submitted to be part of the mysterious event,” he said. “I was in shock to find out that I was the only one from my command to get the golden ticket to this once-in-a-lifetime dinner.”

earned a unit commendation medal, Cruz said.

Cruz was in the middle of a 30-day hospital stay stemming from complications following an appendectomy when he got a call from a Pentagon sergeant major inviting him to tonight’s dinner, he said.

“It’s a dream and an honor,” Cruz said, adding he hopes for the chance to thank the president and first lady for all they’ve done for service members.

Air Force Staff Sgt. J.H. Smith, who will represent Georgia at tonight’s dinner, said that like Wunderlich, he spent his first “eye-opening” deployment learning his job. During the first of six two-to-three-month deployments, Smith earned the Distinguished Flying Cross for precision fire from an AC-130U gunship, killing insurgents who were within 10 yards of the Navy SEALs the gunship’s crew was supporting.

“To have someone tell you, ‘You saved my life,’ … that’s totally overwhelming,” he

said. “Ultimately, I was just doing my job the way I was trained to.”

Smith logged 1,328 gunship flight hours, more than half of which were combat hours. With the military drawdown in Iraq, he said, newer service members typically get some time before they deploy. In contrast, he noted, he and his contemporaries often were “out the door within the month” of completing initial entry training.

The staff sergeant said he and his wife, KerryAnn, “jumped through some hoops” to prepare for

tonight’s dinner, preparing his uniform, choosing her dress, and finding a babysitter for their son. Smith said he and his wife are excited about the opportunity.

“It’s totally overwhelming,” he added.

Navy Petty Officer Terrylee Thompson, 29, will represent Texas at tonight’s dinner. She said her sixmonth deployment at Camp Victory in 2006 and 2007 resulted in lifelong friendships with other service members she met there.

“They’ve been there. … They know what we had to go through,“ she said.

‘Positive first steps’ North Korea halts nuclear activity and allows return of inspectors

WASHINGTON – The North Korean government Wednesday agreed to stop all nuclear activities at its main production and testing plant and to allow the return

of inspectors, in a move that a Defense Department official described as a positive step toward denuclearization of the communist state.

The North Korean leadership’s decision “is a positive first step toward com-

plete and verifiable denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula in a peaceful manner, which remains our core goal,” Pentagon spokeswoman Navy Cmdr.

Leslie Hull-Ryde said in a written statement. “The only way to achieve that goal is through a deliberate process that requires engagement.”

The State Department made the announcement today as a U.S. delegation returned from bilateral talks with North Korean officials in Beijing. It was the third such round of

Monterey was a marauder against Japan and typhoons Ship earned 11 battle stars during WWII. The light aircraft carrier USS Monterey (CVL-26) was laid down in December 1941 as the light cruiser USS Dayton (CL-78) by New York Shipbuilding Corp., of Camden, N.J. The Dayton was reclassified CV-26 and recommissioned as the USS Monterey July 15, 1943.

The ship displaced 11,000 tons, just less than 1/9th what modern Nimitz-class carriers displace. The ship was 622 feet, 6 inches long; 71 feet, 6 inches at beam; with a draft of 26 feet. Its speed was listed as 31.6 knots and its full crew complement was 1,569 men. She was armed with 26, 40mm guns; 20, 20mm guns; and 45 aircraft.

After shakedown, it immediately departed

Philadelphia for the western Pacific theater of World War II. She reached the Gilbert Islands Nov. 19, 1943 in time to help secure Makin Island. On Christmas Day 1943, she took part in strikes on Kavieng, New Ireland as part of Task Group 37.2.

Later, and until Feb. 8, 1944, she took part in the critical recapturing of Kwajelein and Eniwetok.

The light carrier then acted with famed Task Group 58 during raids on the Carolines, the Marianas, New Guinea and the Bonins through July 1944.

She was also involved in the Battle of the Philippine Sea on April 29-30, 1944.

The ship sailed to Pearl Harbor for overhaul and departed Hawaii on Aug. 29. She launched

strikes against Wake Island on Sept. 3 and then joined Task Force 38 for strikes in the southern Philippines and the Ryukyus.

From October through December 1944 she supported the landings on Leyte and then Mindoro in the Philippines.

Enemy planes were not able to damage the Monterey in her first year, but this did not mean she made it through “battle” unscathed. In December 1944, she steamed into a “howling typhoon” according to the ship’s history which packed winds of more than 100 miles per hour.

At the height of the twoday storm, several planes tore loose from their cables, causing several fires on the hangar deck.

Monterey was dispatched to Bremerton Naval yard for repairs and overhaul. She arrived in Kitsap County in January 1945.

back taking part in operations off Okinawa and began launching strikes against Nansei Shoto and Kyushu on mainland Japan from May 9 to June 1.

She rejoined Task Force 38 for the final strikes against Honshu and Hokkaido on the Japanese home islands from July 1 to Aug. 15.

Moneterey’s war record was luminous. Her planes sank five enemy warships and damaged many others. She was responsible for the destruction of hundreds of thousands of tons of enemy shipping, downing of hundreds of enemy planes, and the destruction of enemy factories producing war goods.

After the war ended, Moneterey departed Japanese waters Sept. 7, having embarked troops at Tokyo. She steamed for New York City and arrived in the “Big Apple” Oct. 17.

She was decommissioned Feb. 11, 1947, and placed in reserve at Philadelphia.

With the outbreak of the Korean conflict, Monterey was recommissioned on Sept. 15, 1950.

She departed Norfolk Jan. 3, 1951 and steamed to Pensacola, Fla. For the next four years, she trained thousands of naval aviation cadet student pilots and helicopter trainees.

She also took part in a rescue mission to Honduras after the flooding there from Oct. 1 to Oct. 11, 1954.

She departed Pensacola June 9, 1955 and steamed to join the Atlantic Reserve Fleet in Philadelphia. She was decommissioned Jan. 16, 1956.

She remained berthed in Philadelphia through 1969.

Monterey received 11 battle stars during World War II service.

FORT MEADE (AFPS) – The only legal U.S. resident being held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, today became the first high-value detainee to plead guilty to charges of helping terrorists plot and carry out attacks.

Majid Shoukat Khan, 32, pleaded guilty to all charges against him as part of a plea deal that will give him a reduced sentence in exchange for cooperating with the U.S. government, including possibly testifying at other detainees’ trials.

Khan is charged with conspiracy, murder in violation of the law of war, attempted murder in violation of the law of war, providing material support for terrorism and spying.

The charges come from Khan’s role in delivering funds used to carry out the August 2003 bombing of the J.W. Marriot hotel in Jakarta, Indonesia, and his attempted assassination of former

Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf.

In addition, he is accused of collaborating with selfproclaimed 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed on several domestic plots.

These included plans to poison U.S. water reservoirs and blow up underground fuel storage tanks at U.S. gas stations.

Sentencing will be delayed for four years and will be based on Khan’s compliance, Army Col. James L. Pohl, the judge, explained during Khan’s arraignment today at Guantanamo Bay. Should Khan provide “thorough, truthful cooperation and assistance” in support of upcoming proceedings, his sentence will be reduced to a maximum of 25 years, and as little as 19 years, in accordance with the plea deal, Pohl explained.

Sentencing guidelines for his offenses typically would be be 25 to 40 years.

today will count toward fulfilling that sentence, Pohl said.

Khan responded “yes” when Pohl asked if he had entered into the plea agreement voluntarily and of his own free will as he waived his right to appear before a military jury.

“I understand the charges and specifications, and I am aware I have a legal and moral right to plead not guilty and to leave the government with the burden of proving my guilt beyond a reasonable doubt by legal and competent evidence,” he noted in signing the pretrial agreement. However, based on the terms of the deal, he continued, “I offer to plead guilty to all charges and specifications.”

The plea deal also bars Khan from filing suit against the U.S. government or any of its agencies regarding his capture, detention or confinement conditions before his plea.

Pohl denied the defense team’s request to seal details about the plea deal to protect the defendant and his family.

The judge noted the need to keep the commission proceedings transparent and the fact that the plea arrangement is a public document.

Khan acknowledged during questioning by Pohl that the agreement does not guarantee his freedom, and that the convening authority has no power to change his status as an “alien unprivileged enemy belligerent.” He recognized that after serving his time, he must file a habeas corpus petition to apply for release.

“I am making a leap of faith here, sir,” he told the

judge.

Born in Pakistan, Khan moved to the United States with his family in 1996 and lived there until 2002. He graduated from Owings Mills High School near Baltimore and worked at his family’s gas station and in various office jobs.

Army Brig. Gen. Mark Martins, the chief prosecutor, said Khan admitted that he became radicalized after watching smoke rise from the Pentagon during the 9/11 attacks from the office building where he was working in Northern Virginia.

He has been in U.S. custody since March 2003, when Pakistani forces raided his family’s home in Karachi

and turned him over to U.S. authorities. Khan was held at an undisclosed overseas facility before being transferred to Guantanamo Bay in 2006.

Today, wearing a dark suit, white shirt and tie during his arraignment, Khan told Pohl in fluent English that he understands the charges against him and acknowledges his guilt. He emphasized that although he was part of a conspiracy to commit terror attacks, he did not necessarily know details about the attacks.

“I volunteered to do a lot of things” between January 2002 and March 2003, Khan acknowledged to Pohl.
