Creating a skin care regimen By Alyssa Brown The skin is the largest organ of the human body. One of its main functions is to protect the body from external factors like bacteria, chemicals and temperature. Maintaining healthy skin is vital to our internal health, limiting sickness and damage to the bones, muscles and organs. “The skin is a roadmap to what’s going on internally,” says Joyce Ray, licensed esthetician and owner of Holistic Skin Care operating in Poulsbo Spa. “A lot of estheticians and people don’t realize that, so I really try to work with my clients not just on the surface and externally, but thinking Joyce Ray, licensed esthetician outside the box and helping and owner of Holistic Skin Care them fine tune what’s really PHOTO PROVIDED BY going on.” HOLISTIC SKIN CARE When it comes to skin care, many can feel overwhelmed with the unlimited amount of product options, methods and routines. Finding the right products and system for you can be daunting, but it’s a crucial step for achieving effective results. “Whatever you put on the skin is absorbed by the body,” Ray says, “so just like what you put in your body — you don’t want it to be full of processed foods, chemicals, GMOs, things like that. It’s the same for things topically applied.” Ray recommends looking for organic products with only natural ingredients, excluding potentially harmful additives like parabens, sulfates, colors, fragrances, dyes and preservatives. “There are so many lines out there and not one is perfect, but one thing I highly recommend is read your ingredient label,” she says. “Know what you’re putting on your body. If you’ve got a list a mile long full of names that you can’t pronounce or have no idea what they are, I would not be using it. You want to stick to pure, simple, raw ingredients.” Achieving healthier skin has many benefits for us physically, but also mentally. Self-confidence is naturally increased when the issues that clients hyper-fixate upon when looking in the mirror finally disappear. “It’s like when you work out,” Ray says, “You’re taking pride in your body and you’re feeling good. You’re going to glow and feel

Care’s help in changing their lives. Sometimes their statements can be more literal than metaphorical. As estheticians, Ray and her daughter Sydney Mitchell, licensed esthetician with Holistic Skin Care, make it their job to not only treat the skin, but to inspect it for potential health hazards. “We’ve actually sent many SEE SKIN CARE ON PAGE 8
