Creating a skin care regimen

By Alyssa Brown The skin is the largest organ of the human body.

One of its main functions is to protect the body from external factors like bacteria, chemicals and temperature. Maintaining healthy skin is vital to our internal health, limiting sickness and damage to the bones, muscles and organs.

HOLISTIC SKIN CARE When it comes to skin care, many can feel overwhelmed with the unlimited amount of product options, methods and routines. Finding the right products and system for you can be daunting, but it’s a crucial step for achieving effective results.

“Whatever you put on the skin is absorbed by the body,” Ray says, “so just like what you put in your body — you don’t want it to be full of processed foods, chemicals, GMOs, things like that. It’s the same for things topically applied.”

Ray recommends looking for organic products with only natural ingredients, excluding potentially harmful additives like parabens, sulfates, colors, fragrances, dyes and preservatives. “There are so many lines out there and not one is perfect, but one thing I highly recommend is read your ingredient label,” she says. “Know what you’re putting on your body. If you’ve got a list a mile long full of names that you can’t pronounce or have no idea what they are, I would not be using it. You want to stick to pure, simple, raw ingredients.”

Achieving healthier skin has many benefits for us physically, but also mentally. Self-confidence is naturally increased when the issues that clients hyper-fixate upon when looking in the mirror finally disappear. “It’s like when you work out,” Ray says, “You’re taking pride in your body and you’re feeling good. You’re going to glow and feel

better about yourself when you take care of yourself and your skin is part of that — it’s a huge part of that.”

She adds, “For me, the biggest reward is being able to help people have that self confidence and love their skin again.”

Your personal self care guide

By Alyssa Brown Making time for self care isn’t easy in a life filled with adventures, responsibilities and obstacles. Writing down what you wish to accomplish and hanging it proudly where you’ll see it everyday can help to provide a consistent reminder and means to hold yourself accountable to your goals.

This self care guide was created for you to personalize and keep with you as a reminder of your journey towards self improvement. Take the time to focus on yourself today and plan some self care goals.

Self care is about more than just implementing positive changes in your life, it’s also the understanding of what causes you stress and learning how to prevent burnout. Are minor inconveniences getting more of a reaction out of you than they should? Maybe you see yourself pulling away from friends and family? Observe your reactions to different situations and create a list of what signals you receive from your mind and body when you are stressed.

Now that you have a better idea of how you react to stressful situations, identify some methods or activities that relax you. Keep these in mind when you notice signs of stress and take a moment to restore your mental and physical state. By Metro X Color results will vary from the box model. At-home color kits only reflect the color on the box if you have never before dyed your hair and if your hair is lighter than the color on the box. Hair that has already been dyed may turn up a different shade.

Hair coloring serves various purposes. Some women use differently hued tresses to make dramatic statements, while others want to conceal some gray hairs. Still, some appreciate how hair color can plump up hair follicles and contribute to fullness.

The experts at Good Housekeeping say roughly 43 million women in the United States have dyed their hair in the past six months. A survey from the haircare products manufacturer John Frieda Canada found 58 percent of Canadian women regularly color their hair as well.

Many women take to the at-home color kits or the salon every three weeks or more to keep locks looking ideal. According to Fash, a company that connects millions of customers to the best local professionals, salon coloring and highlights cost between $60 and $150 on average. Boxed color kits can cost anywhere from $6 to $15.

With so much coloring going on, it can be helpful to learn the basics and some coloring tips and techniques to improve the appearance and health of your hair.

Many women color their hair. Learning the right techniques and employing some helpful hints can improve the end result. 

X Beware of “hot roots.” People who regularly touch up their hair to combat roots or new gray growth may end up with “hot roots.” This happens when the scalp glows brighter and reflects a warmer tone than the rest of the hair since it is virgin hair and reacts differently to the lift and deposit of color. In general, using a color that’s the same level or darker than existing color-treated hair can help women avoid hot roots.

X Save major color changes for the salon.

One of the biggest mistakes people who dye their hair at home make is trying a dramatic transition on their own. Celebrity colorist Kari Hill advises women to stay within two shades, lighter or darker, of their current color when dabbling at home. More dramatic shifts require multiple processes that are best left to professional colorists.

X Try a balayage technique. Many women extend time between salon visits by investing in balayage instead of traditional highlights. This technique does not usually go all the way to the root of the hair, making it appear more natural as hair grows out.

Ombre techniques also can help camouflage root growth.

X Invest in a sulfate-free shampoo. After dying, sulfate-free products can help extend the life of the color.

How meditation can help combat work-life imbalance

Juggling a family and a thriving career is no small task. It’s easy to become overwhelmed when faced with responsibilities at home and at the office, and it’s even easier to fall victim to a work-life imbalance. Such an imbalance can have troubling short- and long-term consequences.

More than 40 percent of working professionals who were surveyed by the United Kingdom-based Mental Health Foundation noted that they are neglecting various aspects of their life because of work. The MHF notes that such an imbalance can make professionals more vulnerable to mental health problems.

In fact, the same survey found that more than half of all workers who work long hours feel irritable, while 27 percent acknowledged feeling depressed.

Various strategies can help working professionals overcome the negative side effects of work-life imbalance. In addition to exploring ways to work fewer hours and find more time for their families, professionals who feel their life lacks balance can seek ways to overcome the stress associated with such an imbalance. Meditation is one such option.

What is meditation?

The Mayo Clinic notes that meditation dates back thousands of years.

Modern meditation often aims to help people relax and reduce stress.

When meditating, people focus their attention as they attempt to eliminate jumbled thoughts. That can be especially valuable to adults who are feeling overwhelmed by their many personal and professional responsibilities.

The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health notes that there are many types of meditation, but most require four common elements: • a quiet location to meditate where distractions are limited • a specific, comfortable posture • something people can focus their attention on while meditating, such as a set of words or an object • an open attitude How does meditation benefit the mind and body?

Meditation advocates note that the practice can provide a sense of inner peace and help people rebalance their lives. That can pay dividends for both physical and mental health.

The NCCIH notes that evidence suggests meditation can help reduce blood pressure. High blood pressure has been linked to both heart disease and stroke. A small study by the NCCIH also found that a form of meditation known as mindfulness-based therapy for insomnia helped reduce instances of chronic insomnia in adults.

According to the NCCIH, a 2013 review of three studies suggested that meditation may help slow, stall or even reverse age-related changes in the brain.

Adults confronting a work-life imbalance may feel as though they don’t have the time to address their concerns in a healthy, effective way.

Meditation need not take up much time each day, but it can be an effective tool in the fight against work-life imbalance. 

A good time to get started is at the change of the seasons, as the temperature and other external factors shift the needs of your skin.

“If you don’t know what to do or what to use and how to use it then you’re really at a loss,” she says. “That’s one of the things that sets us apart from the rest is that we do spend significant time with our clients, asking them what they need and what they want.
