Fireworks, music, parades to mark July 4

Major makeover for murals in PA

Forks activities start Monday BY ROB OLLIKAINEN PENINSULA DAILY NEWS

PORT ANGELES — A bevy of events are planned for the Fourth of July in Clallam County communities from Sequim to Neah Bay. In Forks, the Fourth of July is celebrated for a week. Activities will begin Monday and continue through next Sunday, with a special Grand Parade and fireworks on Thursday. The Port Angeles Regional Chamber of Commerce will host a day-long festival that will include concerts at City Pier, games for all ages, a hot dog eating contest, a July Fourth parade and a professional fireworks display. Neah Bay also plans a fireworks show on Thursday. The Port Angeles Fourth of July celebration has grown sig-

nificantly as a “community-building event” in recent years, said Marc Abshire, chamber director. “We’re really trying to focus on bringing the community together on a national holiday and trying to build community pride,” Abshire said. “We want people to feel like they can stay in Port Angeles for the Fourth and not have to go somewhere else for a good time.”

Sequim concert Meanwhile, the Sequim City Band will present its annual “Patriotic 4th” concert at 3 p.m. Thursday at the James Center for the Performing Arts, 350 N. Blake Ave. in Sequim. This free event is set just north of Carrie Blake Community Park. TURN

Indian Island naval base gets new leader Thanks from outgoing commander BY JEANNIE MCMACKEN PENINSULA DAILY NEWS

NAVAL MAGAZINE INDIAN ISLAND — Cmdr. Rocky Pulley has stepped down as commanding officer of Naval Magazine Indian Island and welcomed incoming commanding officer Cmdr. Donald Emerson. About 100 invited family and guests, including city and county officials, gathered to hear comments from guest speaker Rear Admiral Scott Gray, commander, Navy Region Northwest, on Friday. Additionally, Captain Emile

Moured, Jr. CHC, USN gave the invocation and benediction and the Navy Band Northwest provided musical interludes. “It’s a sad day for us because we are losing Rocky,” said Admiral Gray. “But all sailors are trained from the very start to train your relief. Rocky’s done a superb job in doing that.” While listing Pulley’s successes, Gray made special mention of his efforts to develop new relationships with the area civilian community. “We can’t do this without our

community partners, the City of Port Townsend, Jefferson County, the Port Gamble S’Klallam, Jamestown S’Klallam, the Lower Elwah and Suquamish tribes and countless others,” he said. ”Thank you for your continued support of the base.” Gray said that under Pulley’s leadership, Naval Magazine Indian Island (NavMag) had safely and efficiently handled more than 123,000 tons of ordinance without any significant problems and no injuries. “The only near-death experiJEANNIE MCMACKEN/PENINSULA DAILY NEWS ence in Rocky’s time involved Commander Rocky Pulley, left, concluded his tenure at Rocky inside his truck with a Naval Magazine Indian Island on Friday.
