5 Steps to Prep Your Home for Winter Weather (StatePoint) This winter, stay ahead of frost and freezing temperatures by taking some easy steps to get your home ready for the cold months ahead. If you’re not sure where to start, there are some quick step-bystep directions to get you in the DIY spirit. How to seal off drafts: Windows and doors are the biggest culprits of drafts in your home, but there are products that make sealing them simple. While product packaging often provides instruction, online videos may be a better resource. For instance, Duck brand provides a step-by-step tutorial for how to seal window drafts with its RollOn Window Kit and Heavy Duty Weatherstrip Seals, which provide tight barriers to keep warm air in and cold air out. Or, for drafty doors with thick gaps, the Double Draft Seal easily slides onto the bottom of doors to block unwanted chill. Visit to learn more. How to prevent freezing pipes: Every winter there are billions of dollars in insured losses due to burst pipes and other winter-related damage, according to the Insurance Information Institute. To prevent frozen pipes, it’s imperative to drain water from outdoor faucets and garden hoses. Plus, have in-ground sprinkler systems winterized, as well. You can review a quick

4-minute video at, where experts show you how you can do this easily and efficiently. How to clean your gutters: Frozen gutters are another prime source of snow and ice damage. Ice can accumulate on the edge of the roof and prevent melting snow from draining. That’s why it’s important to clean debris from gutters several times a year. Keep the ladder on a level surface with another person as a spotter. Wear gloves and safety goggles to protect yourself, and drop debris onto a tarp or bucket below. Flush the gutter with a hose to check for proper flow, and finally check down spouts for anything that might be lodged. How to insulate your water heater: Wrap-

ping your water heater with an insulated blanket reduces heat loss and saves energy. It’s simple: just measure the circumference of your water heater and cut the blanket to size. Products such like Duck brand’s Water Heater Insulation Blanket come with tape for easy installation and it’s made of nonirritating recycled cotton, not fiberglass. How to protect outdoor items: High-wind gusts and cool temperatures can wreak havoc. Be sure to store or protect outdoor furniture and accessories. Smaller items, such as cushions, umbrellas and drained hoses, should be stored in sheds or basements. Protect larger patio furniture and grills with tarps or custom-fit covers. A roll of strong, all-weather tape, like T-Rex Tape, can fix any rips or holes you may find along the way. Unlike other tapes, it is designed to withstand harsh temperatures to hold stronger and longer, ensuring your items will be in great shape for spring grilling season. Visit for more information. Thanks to a plethora of online resources, weatherizing doesn’t have to seem daunting. By watching a few short videos and following some easy instructions, you can have your home ready for whatever weather winter brings.

Buying or selling a home not only offers us benefits, like equity, comfort & stability, it also positively impacts our community. Every time a home is sold, it sets off a series of events that generates an economic impact on the area around it. In fact, according to the National Association of Realtors, the transfer of real estate in Washington boosts the economy by $76,000, on average! Typically, there are 26 services involved in a single real estate transaction in the 30 days before and after a real estate transaction has closed. Buyers and sellers may use services such as home remodel & repair contractors, painters, plumbers, cleaners, etc. during and after the closing of a sale.

In addition, the community experiences a positive economic impact when buyers and sellers utilize the following services: mortgage lending, title insurance, escrow, home appraisal, real estate brokerages, movers, storage facilities, hardware and home product stores, and the purchase of new furniture & appliances. I love my real estate business because it allows me to serve my community by helping individuals and families own a piece of the American Dream. Homeownership has a direct, positive impact on the health of our community, and that’s important to me, and it’s good for all of us! – Marti Reeder

Easy Ways to Weatherize Your Home (StatePoint) Extreme temperatures -hot or cold -- can send your energy bills through the roof while also creating an uncomfortable living space for your family. Almost two-thirds of American adults live in a home that needs weatherization, according to a recent online survey, commissioned by Duck brand, conducted by Harris Poll. To bring down energy costs and make the temperature in your home more comfortable, consider defending your home with helpful tools like Roll-On Window Kits, Double Draft Seals, Socket Sealers and Attic Stairway Covers. You can also adjust ceiling fans, install a programmable thermostat and open or close curtains to leverage sunlight and shade. To learn more about weatherization products and ways you can make your home more comfortable and efficient, visit Don’t resign yourself to high energy bills and an uncomfortable living space. Weatherizing is simple, affordable and effective.

Fire and Fireplace Safety Tips for Winter (StatePoint) Winter is the coziest time of year. It’s also a time of year that can pose specific safety risks, especially around the use of candles, fire and heating products. In 2015, one home structure fire was reported every 86 seconds, according to the National Fire Protection Association. To protect your family and home, check out these tips.

Safety Devices Double check all of your home’s safety devices, including carbon monoxide detectors and smoke alarms for functionality and to ensure batteries are still working. Doing so will offer you greater peace of mind during a time of year with additional fire risks.

Fireplaces Nothing beats the charm and warmth of a fireplace. Heatilator, a leader in fireplace safety and the number one fireplace brand used by homebuilders, began including safety screens as standard equipment more than a decade before rules

required the use of this equipment in new fireplace installations. As a pioneer in the field of fireplace safety, they offer these tips: • Ensure gas fireplaces are outfitted with safety screens. Check out Heatilator, which offers retrofit safety screens. • Never leave children or pets unattended near a lit fireplace or one that was recently turned off. Safety screens are meant to protect against contact with hot

glass, but remember that the metal can also heat up, and your heating equipment -- fireplaces, stoves, inserts and their surrounding material -- will remain hot for some time after use. • Consider annual maintenance for both wood-burning and gas fireplaces, as recommended by experts. • Learn more by visiting for additional fireplace safety tips and to learn about safety screens. Candles Candles can be a feast for the senses, but they are also a major cause of accidents and house fires. Don’t burn candles near curtains, and other flammable objects. Never leave candles unattended. Ensure all flames are extinguished before leaving a room and before going to sleep. If you have pets or children, make sure any open flames are well out of their reach and consider alternatives such as candle warmers. Taking a few key precautions can help you make your home a safe haven this winter.

I have a tile I’m trying to match, can you help? We’ll certainly try! At least once a week, a homeowner comes to us with a broken piece of tile from a damaged shower or an old floor and asks if we can order it or something like it. Occasionally, we can track down the manufacturer and order more of the exact same tile. But if the tile is out of production or completely unavailable, we’ll let you know up front and recommend alternatives. Submitted by Darrell Helbling, owner of Tile Lines, website

I found a tile/stone at another store. Can you order it for me? More often than not, yes! We work with over 30 different tile distributors, hundreds of tile manufacturers, and can order over 100,000 tile and stone products. Contact us with the name of the product and when and where you saw it, and we’ll be able to tell you if we can get it and how much it would cost.  However, if a man-made product has been discontinued, is exclusive to another retailer (such as a Home Depot or Lowe’s), or is unavailable in our region, we might not be able to order it. When looking for natural stone products from several different sources; so even if Company A stopped carrying a product, Company B might still have it.  We always recommend  seeing a sample of the current batch  of  any  natural stone material in person, due to the high variation inherent in the product. The stone sample you saw three months ago might look very different from a current sample from the exact same company or quarry.

Our new retail showroom is open to homeowners, designers, and contractors.

S 277th St

Why can’t I buy any products on your website? Tile and stone can look extremely different on a computer screen than they do in real life. We strongly recommend you see the color and feel the texture of a tile in person before buying. Choosing a product that you’ll live with for 10+ years without seeing it in person is like buying a new car without taking it for a test drive! We may, in the future, sell non-design items such as thinset and tools on our website and have them available for delivery or in-store pick-up. Subscribe to our quarterly email newsletter, to keep up to date on our latest website and product developments.
