How To Create A Low Maintenance Landscape Yes! It is possible to have a gorgeous yard and still have free time to relax and enjoy it. Your yard can be LOW MAINTENANCE and still be beautiful. The NO MAINTENANCE YARD pictured here is not beautiful or relaxing.

Consider the following ideas to reduce the work and increase the enjoyment in your yard: Make your outdoor living space larger. Your deck or patio does not require watering, weeding or pruning and provides that space you need for relaxing and entertaining. A well planned and placed deck or patio will add beauty and function to your yard and can increase its resale value also. Consider reducing the size of your lawn. Lawns are huge consumers of time, money, and water. Think about how you use your lawn. Children and pets need room to run and play. But some areas could be just as beautiful, or maybe even more so, with the right groundcover and not demand the time mowing or money watering and fertilizing. More and more people today are finding very creative and attractive ways to replace their lawns.

Mulch, mulch, mulch, and mulch some more! There is no single thing that you can do in your yard that will do more to 1. reduce the amount of work needed in your yard by reducing weeds, 2. make your plants and soil healthier, and 3. reduce your water bill! One day spent each spring or fall spreading a 1 to 2 inch layer of mulch on your shrubs and flower beds will pay huge dividends and greatly reduce the amount of time and money spent on your landscape. Bark, shredded leaves, lawn clippings, and compost will all smother weed growth and help to hold moisture in the soil for reduced watering. Compost has the added benefit of being very nutrient rich. That means greater overall plant health, making them more resistant to insects, diseases, and weather stress. Then you spend less time spraying and tending to unhappy and unhealthy plants. The additional use of a pre-emergent herbicide like Preen also restricts germination of weed seeds in your beds. Choose plants for your yard that are less demanding of your time. Formal hedges, rose gardens, and large annual flower beds can demand a lot of time and energy each year. Instead, select plants that will look great with little or no care during the year. • Evergreen shrubs like Pieris give lots of seasonal interest throughout the year and require only an occasional trim if needed. Conifers like pine and cypress come in many varieties that grow very slow and offer great color and texture to the landscape. • Landscape grasses like Blue Oat Grass, Cappuccino & Orange Sedge, Black Mondo Grass, and

Blue Fescue add great color and texture to the landscape and demand little or no attention from you. • Replace annuals with perennials in your flower beds. Perennials return year after year getting bigger and more beautiful each year. A little fertilizer and a little cleanup in the fall and you are done! Rudbeckia Black-eyed-Susan blooms for several months and offers lots of bold color in late summer and fall. Day-lilies are easy care plants and many bloom all summer. Lavender requires little care and little water and gives an abundance of fragrant flowers. Hostas, Heathers, and Heuchera are also a few of the many low-care plants that can be added to your landscape. A beautiful landscape should be a source of joy and rest and not a place of toil and stress.
