Transportation secretary out 24 Republicans and 1 Democrat voted not to confirm Lynn Peterson, a move Gov. Inslee calls politically motivated. By Jerry Cornfield Herald Writer
OLYMPIA — Republican senators delivered a stunning political blow to Democratic Gov. Jay Inslee on Friday by
voting to fire Secretary of Transportation Lynn Peterson. In a rarely used maneuver, 24 Republicans and one Democrat voted to not confirm Peterson, whose management they blamed for
festering problems with several projects, including the I-405 express toll lanes and a new tunnel in Seattle. Peterson, whom Inslee appointed to the job in February 2013, will lose her job immediately. She came to Washington after working as a transportation adviser to Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber.
“The way you fix accountability ... is to impose accountability on our own,” said Sen. Andy Hill, R-Redmond, a member of the Senate Transportation Committee. “I personally like Lynn Peterson. I think she is a good person. But I look at results. I See OUT, back page, this section

Stanwood police recover purloined shower Herald Writer
STANWOOD — It was the opposite of incognito. The rusty blue 1985 Chevrolet pickup, complete with a stolen shower in the truck bed, didn’t make it too far. The truck ended up in a muddy ditch near the Snohomish-Skagit county line, with all three occupants outfitted in handcuffs. For Stanwood police, that early morning in mid-December

took a meandering path. It started around 4:30 a.m. Dec 13. A witness reported seeing a pickup parked in a construction site in a housing development along 70th Ave NW, near Cedarhome Elementary. Local deputies knew some tools had been stolen from the site a few weeks earlier, Police Chief Rick Hawkins said. The witness said the suspects were loading lumber and what appeared to be a shower unit, the kind that arrives ready

for installation. “It comes in a crate. It’s upright,” Hawkins said. “It sticks out like a sore thumb in the back of a pickup.” Deputy Brandon Liukko was on scene in less than a minute. By then, the witness had seen the truck moving northbound, toward 68th Avenue NW. “That’s where deputy Liukko saw the pickup along with the shower unit in the back, which was very visible,” Hawkins said.

The deputy attempted to stop the truck and it took off, staying at or below the speed limit, Hawkins said. The low-speed chase lasted about 8 miles. It went onto 300th Street NW. At that point, a second deputy was headed northbound from Island Crossing, hoping to use spike strips to stop the truck, Hawkins said. Unbeknownst to the police, the suspects had an emergency radio scanner.

EVERETT — A man accused of stabbing his parents and setting their Machias house on fire Jan. 14 told a deputy he believed they were possessed by demons and had attacked him, according to court papers. Zachary R. Konicke, 29, was charged Friday with first-degree murder and first-degree arson. The defendant’s father, Michael Konicke, 58, told investigators his son suddenly attacked the couple with knives, and then set the house on fire. He was repeatedly stabbed and slashed while trying to disarm his son and stop the flames from spreading, deputy prosecutor Francesca Yahyavi wrote in Snohomish County Superior Court papers. Vicki Konicke, 58, died in the attack. Her body later was found inside the burned-out house. The couple had raised champion Golden retrievers. A dog’s remains were found on the floor near the slain woman’s feet, the prosecutor wrote. Deputies were alerted to problems at the home that evening by a series of 911 calls. The first call reported how Zachary Konicke had taken a car without permission. A few hours later came a call that he’d returned home with the vehicle and was “terrorizing” his parents with a knife. Minutes later, dispatchers were told that he’d set the home on fire. The blaze began in a pile of firewood, wrapping paper and encyclopedias that had been heaped up near the top of a set of stairs leading to a loft. Investigators determined it likely took about 15 minutes from the time the materials were set alight for combustion gases to “flashover,” spreading flame throughout the house. When crews arrived, Zachary Konicke was found outside the burning home. He had a broken heel from jumping from an upper story of the home.
