Tacoma applies for $55K EPA Urban Waters grant
King's Books selects winner for customer contest naming store's new cat Posted online Fri., Nov. 20 Photos Courtesy King's Books Our favorite independent bookstore in Tacoma recently announced the winner of a contest that surely appealed to cat lovers (see "King's Books invites Tacoma customers to name store's new cat," Tacoma Daily Index, Nov. 4, 2015). "We adopted a new cat!" wrote King's Books staff in an e-mail to customers earlier this month. For a long time, the bookstore had two cats: Atticus and Miko, who was a regular fixture at the bookstore for more than a decade but passed away last year. "Atticus needed a friend and—while they're not quite friends yet (being cats)—we hope they will be soon. So, in the great tradition of how Atticus got his name, we would like to announce our Name That Cat Contest!" Locals were encouraged to visit King's Books, located at 218 St. Helens Ave., in Tacoma by Sun., Nov. 15, to suggest a name for the cat (pictured). Customers could visit as many times as they liked, and names with a literary reference were greatly encouraged. Entries could be made in-store only. The winning entry would be chosen by King's Books staff, and the winning contestant would receive a $50 gift certificate to the bookstore. In the end, customer Katy Evans selected the winning name 'Herbert' in honor of Frank Herbert, the late novelist with Tacoma roots. "We had a crazy, competitive [contest] with over 210 entries," wrote King's Books staff in a recent e-mail to customers. "There were many, many great entries, the most popular being Mr. Darcy, Mr. Wuffles, Poirot, names from To Kill a Mockingbird, Poe-based names,
and many other creative suggestions. We had a very difficult time choosing, and will no doubt be hearing from those of you who feel we chose incorrectly. Don't worry! Herbert will still love you, no matter what you call him. Thanks for playing! It was so much fun!"
Posted online Mon., Nov. 23 The City of Tacoma has applied for a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that would help address water quality issues related to urban runoff pollution. The application was submitted to the EPA's Urban Waters Program, which helps local residents and their organizations restore their urban waters in ways that also benefit community and economic revitalization. Since its inception in 2012, the program has awarded approximately $5.3 million in Urban Waters Small Grants to 92 organizations nationwide, according to information on the EPA's Web site. Grants are awarded every two years, with individual award amounts of up to $60,000. In Washington State, two organizations have been awarded grants. The Port Townsend Marine Science Society was awarded a $56,848 grant in 2011/2012 to collect data related to toxic pollution in Puget Sound. The Duwamish River Cleanup Coalition/Technical Advisory Group was awarded a $60,000 grant in 2013/2014 to implement the Healthy River/ Healthy Communities project. According to a City of Tacoma staff report, an EPA Urban Waters Program grant would help pay for programs that engage underserved communities, foster partnerships, provide additional community benefits, and strengthen outreach efforts by hiring consultants to create a community-based marketing plan for stormwater education, hosting additional community events like rain garden workshops and depaving (see "Volunteers needed for McKinley Avenue 'de-paving' project," Tacoma Daily Index, May 29, 2015; "Volunteers needed for South Tacoma Way 'de-paving' project," Tacoma Daily Index, Feb. 27, 2015; and "Tacoma volunteers to transform parking lot into plant paradise," Tacoma Daily Index, March 12, 2014), and hiring additional interns to coordinate these efforts. The City has requested a $55,000 grant, and has earmarked $5,000 in the current biennial budget for matching funds. The EPA plans to award Urban Waters Program grants next summer.
