City studies remodel to increase police station space BY STEVE HUNTER shunter@kentreporter.com

Kent voters could be asked late next year to approve a property tax measure to pay for more space for the police department by re-

modeling existing city buildings. The City Council agreed last week to move forward with a study to find out remodeling costs and funding options. City staff expects to have those details by spring or summer.

The council chose to look at the remodeling option after voters in November 2014 turned down a bond measure to build a new police station at a cost of $34 million at the same location as the current facility, which was last remodeled

in 1991 to handle 75 officers. The police department has just more than 140 officers and hopes to get to 165 officers by 2020. “We believe the cost estimate will be significantly less than the $34 million stand-alone police

building,” said Derek Matheson, city chief administrative officer, at the Nov. 17 council workshop. “We will also start to develop funding options. One of those [ more REMODEL page 2 ]

Turkey Day memories Former Kent-Meridian football players recall 1954 Thanksgiving game BY HEIDI SANDERS hsanders@kentreporter.com

Kent’s population dipped dramatically on Thanksgiving Day 1954. About 2,500 of the city’s 3,500 people made the trek to Seattle that afternoon to watch the KentMeridian High School football team

take on Garfield High School in the eighth annual Turkey Day game. Although the game ended in a 14-14 tie, members of the Royals team still have fond memories of that day six decades ago. About 10 of the former team members got together Nov. 17 with their spouses, children and grandchildren to reminisce at the Greater Kent Historical Society Museum and shared their story with the Kent City Council later than evening. Some of the men donned their old letterman’s

jackets and sweaters. KentMeridian was invited to the game after an undefeated season — eight wins and a tie — which secured the Puget Sound League title for the Royals. The game was not a state championship game but an opportunity for the top Seattle team to play against [ more GAME page 9 ]

The Green River College faculty union last week sent a vote of no confidence in the college’s Board of Trustees to Gov. Jay Inslee’s office. “The faculty after quite a lot of deliberation – deliberation that began many, many months ago – have taken an action that we very much hoped to avoid when months ago we began to pursue it, ” United Faculty

president Jaeney Hoene told the board about the no confidence vote during its meeting Nov. 18. Tensions between faculty and administrators and the board have been high on campus for the past several months after the college announced the possible elimination of several programs in a cost-savings effort. Ultimately two programs – auto body and geographic information [ more FACULTY page 4 ]

School zone traffic citations down despite more cameras BY STEVE HUNTER shunter@kentreporter.com

When the city of Kent added two more school zone traffic cameras this fall, city officials expected the number of speeding tickets to go up. But if the month of October serves as an accurate indicator, tickets are way down even with cameras

at four elementary schools instead of two. A total of 974 citations were written for the four schools in October, Kent Police Chief Ken Thomas said at the City Council’s Public Safety Committee meeting on Nov. 10. In October 2014, 1,198 citations were issued, according to [ more CAMERAS page 4 ]
