Police save I-405 jumper

Balducci pulls upset in King Co. Council race BY RYAN MURRAY BELLEVUE REPORTER

In a surprising upset, Bellevue’s Mayor Claudia Balducci defeated Jane Hague in a three-totwo margin for Position 6 of the King County Council. Balducci was floored by the results. “I really did expect it was going to be definitive one way or the other,” she said. “We were Police rescue woman hanging off of I-405 overpass

either going to get our message across to the voters or we wouldn’t. But I was really surprised by the margin. I did not see that happening.” Balducci was elected to Bellevue’s City Council in 2004 and mayor in 2014. She is a member of Sound Transit’s board of directors and has helped guide the East Link light rail line. She is the former director of King County’s Department of Adult and Juvenile Detention. Balducci will serve as mayor through the end

of the year, and will be sworn in early in 2016. “I have a few things in the hopper,” she said. “I’d like to continue work on a ballot measure to ask voters for the next phase of transit building in east county.” In ostensibly a non-partisan race, Balducci garnered support from progressive groups. Hague joined the King County council in 1994, elected as a Republican, and remained on ever since. She was also a Bellevue City Council member before her King County position. Her 21-year tenure on the council ended as SEE UPSET, 2

races. He was watching the Issaquah High School cheerleaders, who quickly gave him a pair of pom-poms and invited him to join them. David, who has Down syndrome, loved it. “He really just likes being part of a group,” said Engen. So, it wasn’t long before he mentioned the experience to David’s teacher at Interlake High School, Heather McLean.

McLean, who is in her 16th year with the school’s PACIFIC Program for disabled students and is also the head cheerleading coach for the Interlake Saints cheerleading squad, almost immediately thought it was a great idea. “I wanted something new to bring to the squad,” said McLean, who also coaches the gymnastics team. An extremely tight race for Bellevue City Council Position 5 between Vandana Slatter and Michelle Hilhorst may not be decided for days, as ballots trickle in. Slatter was leading, but the candidates were separated by less than 250 votes as of Wednesday night as the two vied for the lone open spot on the city council. Slatter was pleased with her initial lead but recognized later returns could change things. “I am thrilled to be in first place and have faith that the voice of the voters will hold this result,” she said. “Great government is all about a shared dialogue with all voices in our community. This is what our campaign has been about, and in the past months we have been energized talking with voters and listening to their concerns and ideas about their neighborhoods. I look forward to continuing that conversation on city council.” Hilhorst remained confident in her campaign. “I’m still optimistic,” she said. “I came back really strong from a SEE COUNCIL, 2
