he Lake Washington School District is investigating an incident at Juanita High School in which a history teacher allegedly used a racial epithet and

told a racially insensitive joke during a classroom discussion. According to the family of a freshman girl, who said they have filed a complaint with the NAACP on the matter, the incident occurred on

Oct. 22 after the teacher allegedly made a racial joke while discussing ancient Chinese civilizations. He then allegedly got into an argument with the freshman student over whether it was acceptable

for people to say “racist” things about their own race. At that point, the family claims, the teacher proceeded to have a conversation with the student, in front of the class, about the use of a specific racial slur (not used in the initial joke) and whether or not it [ more COMPLAINT page 10 ]

Local health providers have opened a new

health center in Kirkland intending to serve as a comprehensive care provider for women on the Eastside.

Opened by Kristina Chamberlain and Jennifer Jimenez, both certified nurse midwives (CNM), the Eastside Women’s Health Center offers services related to pregnancy and early childhood, such as

breastfeeding, lactation support and family building. The center also features providers focusing on holistic care, such as massage therapy and acupuncture. “Really our goal is to [ more CENTER page 5 ]

The King County Prosecutor has declined to move forward with charges against a former employee of former Kirkland City Councilmember Bob Sternoff,

who accused the man of embezzling money from him personally and his construction business. The allegations came to light after Reporter published a story in March 2013 regarding a Kirkland couple who filed a civil lawsuit against Sternoff in

November 2012 in King County Superior Court. The complaint, which Sternoff denied, alleges that he defrauded them out of $70,000. He in turn claimed a former employee had embezzled him out of thousands of dollars. Soon

after the couple filed their lawsuit, Sternoff filed a police report with the Kirkland Police Department against the former employee. The former employee, who is not being named because he wasn’t charged [ more STERNOFF page 9 ]
