Severns next mayor; Born trails Gardner

Bob Severns will be the next mayor of Oak Harbor and the Whidbey General Hospital board will remain unchanged if the first count of ballots in the Nov. 3 election remain unchanged. Severns, a current councilman, has a decisive lead over Councilman Jim Campbell. Severns has 1,709 votes, or 63 percent, while Campbell has exactly 1,000 ballots cast in his favor. Severns said the results show that the citizens of Oak Harbor want change at the top. Scott Dudley, the current mayor, is not seeking reelection after four years of discord between him and the council. “I’m really excited to move forward,” Severns said. “I’m excited to use my leadership skills and my local knowledge to move the city forward. In the hotly contested race for position 2 on the hospital board, incumbent Georgia Gardner is far ahead of rival Rob Born. Gardner has 6,925 votes, or 60 percent, while Born has 4,639 votes, or 40 percent. “I didn’t have any idea how it was going to go,” Gardner said. “I had tremendous support from all the people I talked to when I was bell ringing.” The other race for the hospital board is too close to call. Nancy Fey, who was appointed to the board in 2013, is slightly ahead of challenger Erika Carnahan. Fey has 4,734 votes, or 51 percent, while Carnahan has 4,593 votes, or 49 percent. In the only other contested race affecting Oak Harbor, the Island County Auditor’s Office hasn’t released a count of the write-in votes for Dennis Dickinson, who is challenging Robert Hallahan for a seat on the school board.

The first thing that a visitor to Island County Jail will notice is the smell. Even before walking through the worn metal door of the cell, the odor is overwhelming. Step inside the four walls covered with brown smears of human feces and bits of toilet paper, and breathing the air becomes unbearable. A 30-year-old South Whidbey man in the midst SEE JAIL, A23

OH police, firefighters face off in friendly competition By DEBRA VAUGHN

ak Harbor firefighters and police officers battled Friday night to see who could grow the most manly of male adornments — the mustache. The men had one month to turn bare skin and testosterone into luxurious lip warmers. This year, firefighter Paul Schroer took top honors for “Best Mustache” with a simple, smooth dark caterpillar. For those who are more follically challenged, there were categories aptly named “Other” and “Worst.” Fire Department Capt. Craig Anderson described the “Worst”

Firefighters Genevieve Cox and Lolly Titherington sported some of the fullest and most fabulous ’staches of the evening. But their secret involved adhesive. Firefighter Dustin Amundson couldn’t be beaten in the “Other” category. His facial preparation and wardrobe closely resembled the title character of the television show “My Name is Earl.” Capt. Anderson’s own facial growth was versatile enough to enter the “Worst” or “Other” categories. The world’s teensiest weed SEE MUSTACHE BATTLE, A15
