Bremerton coach prays after game

Contract awarded to improve water flow control BY MICHELLE BEAHM MBEAHM@SOUNDPUBLISHING.COM

“I’m sitting there and I’m praying out there on the 50 and, you know, I got my eyes closed and I feel all these people around me,” Kennedy said after the game. “I’m like, ‘I hope those aren’t kids.’ I’m sitting there and I’m just going, ‘God, thank you for this opportunity,’ ” he said. Kennedy said he had no idea that members of the Centralia team were going to join him.

BREMERTON — The City of Bremerton awarded Pape & Sons Construction, Inc., an $898,919 contract for a flow control and seismic valve project at the regular meeting Oct. 7. This project originated when a 1995 seismic-vulnerability assessment “identified a risk that we could basically lose a bridge, lose a water main,” said Ned Lever, Bremerton’s managing engineer for utilities. The assessment pointed out the lack of seismic valves on the water mains between East and West Bremerton, which meant that in case of a seismic event such as an earthquake, if the valves were damaged, the city’s water supply could basically empty into the narrows. Lever said that while there were manual valves, 15 to 20 gallons of water can be lost in a minute. “Their recommendation was to install valves that have a seismic actuator that would automatically close if an earthquake should occur,” Lever said. Another part of the project is the flow control part, which Lever said is actually a higher priority because “in the last five or six years, we’ve replaced two of the highrisk pipes” that could be damaged in an earthquake. The flow control will address the fact

BREMERTON — Immediately following the Bremerton Knights 21-29 loss to the Centralia High School Tigers Oct. 16, Bremerton assistant football coach Joe Kennedy bowed down on the 50-yard line

to pray. It was a controversial decision for him. Praying while on duty violated school policy, and he faced the possibility of being fired from his coaching job as a result. He had intended to pray alone, and had timed his prayer at a point when he knew the Knights team members would be off to sing a postgame fight song, he said. But dozens of boys with the Centralia football team and other supporters joined him on the field.
