The Reporter will be publishing a newspaper debate during the coming weeks for the two contested Maple Valley City Les Burberry Council races – positions 3 and 6. The candidates for City Council Position 3 are Kathi Turner and Les Burberry. Councilman Layne Barnes is currently in Position 3 and he decided not to seek re-election after two terms in office.
QUESTION 1 Describe your view of the role and responsibility of the City Council within the form of government in Maple Valley. What are the city government’s responsibilities to the busi-

Kathi Turner
The City Council’s role is to provide policy direction for the city and to build and maintain relationships with our neighboring cities. They are also responsible to make sure that our citizens voices are heard with our elected officials at the county, state and federal level. [ more POSITION 3 page 2 ]
City Council Position 6 | Dana Parnello and Cathy Hilde The two candidates for Position 6 are Cathy Hilde and Dana Parnello. The seat opened after Councilwoman Victoria LaiseJonas resigned when she moved out of the area. Parnello was appointed Dana Parnello to the fill the position in August 2014. This election is for the two years remaining on LaiseJonas’ term.

Black Diamond police officers go the extra mile BY SARAH BRENDEN Reporter
Not all good deeds go unnoticed. Last week, The Reporter received a Facebook message from a reader describing a story where two Black Diamond police officers helped a victim of assault find a place to stay for the evening. After contacting Black Diamond Police Chief Jamey Kiblinger, we learned the helpful “It’s what our officers were Sgt. Brian officers do when Lynch and Sgt. Kentwood Wins Big
Kentwood junior running back Chavez Kalua-Fuimaono, No. 33, rushed for 238 yards on 34 carries. Kalua-Fuimaono scored four touchdowns Friday during the Conks’ 55-30 win over Tahoma at French Field.
